Making diesel from old chip oil.

  • A small band of thrifty men take to the streets of Melbourne and sniff out fish and chip shops and take aways in search of their discarded old cooking fat. They take it to their shed and turn it into perfectly good fuel for their diesel vehicles.

I love the notion of taking waste material, like used cooking oil, and creating a resource.

I ran our tractor on it for a little while back when I lived in northern Victoria, now I'm back in NZ and having a proper go at it, the only difference is mines costing me nothing per litre to make but I mix diesel with my oil before it goes in the tank, so all up with todays diesel prices it works to be about the same just without needing a shed full of stuff to make bio diesel, I just have my gravity filter set behind a 40ft container out in the open to aid with drying

Great video for the above average back yard tinkerer who is willing to experiment a little and save a few dollars ! But unless every household consumed massive amounts of fish and chips and other fried foods (which are really not very healthy for us), biodiesel will never become a viable and widely available form of alternate fuel because the volume required to do so would just not be attainable. We also need to consider that the costs of mass production of vast quantities of biodiesel are much higher than regular diesel derived from petroleum. And it would negatively impact the availability of grains intended for food production and drive food prices much higher.

That's not so true , there are people on this planet 4 partners in fact who bought fields planted sunflowers selling oil and then collecting it after their customers used them, and they turn that to biodiesel. And selling that again. They have a closed loop system. It is doable even for a small farm holder. If every body used every waste turn into something we wouldn't need to have this conversation in the first place. But like a toddler we needed to break the earth to learn how to fix it.

Mate and I and a lot of others all over Oz and other countries were all doing this 20 years ago and some longer. Mate and I used to do 1000L batches at a time. Between the 2 of us we had 6 cars so went thought that about every 3 weeks to a month. It's funny to read the same misinformed safety sissy Comments here as were leveld at us back then. I mainly run my Vehicle, Generators and Tractor on straight oil or Blend with petrol. Saves the hassle of making Bio although Bio is more compatible with newer engines but Straight/ blended veg is 100% fine if you run it in suitable engines.
Had Coffee with a mate this morning who is running Straight veg in his wheel loader even though it's winter and says the thing is running with more power which does not make sense on the face of it as veg has about 10% less energy than diesel but the veg could have also cleaned the old thing out. He's very happy with it and the savings he's making on not having to buy 150L of Diesel a week.

The powder is either Sodium Hydroxide OR Potasium Hydroxide. No, it is not to filter the "dirt" out, the Methanol and sodium or potasium hydroxide, make the "Methoxide" which is the catylist to break the long chain polymer into a short chain polymer, (it reduces it's viscosity) so that it will go through the injectors etc., basically.
