If you told me 15 years ago... that I'd be listening to the guy from fear factor, speaking to a Jungian Canadian superstar, during the presidency of Donald Trump...and having one of the most transformative internal debates within myself I would say, bullshit. Yet here we are. I made my bed this morning, threw out my cigarettes, whiskey and beer. Good luck everyone.

From 1:17:00 and that next 7 minutes really spoke to me - hating essays in school BECAUSE the subjects assigned were of zero interest. Decades passed, I became a journalist/essayist, refining and clarifying my thoughts "on paper", exploring subjects that I was passionate about, even if it was for an audience of one. I am so grateful to have had one or two moments in my life where someone has thanked me for being the catalyst for their own self-improvement. They did the hard work but they were thanking me... so humbling.

Listening to JP is becoming so much more interesting, intriguing and wholesome than church services on Sunday...If you listen well enough, its so much better!!....Such a blessing this man is to mankind....Pastors and reverends...take notes!!!.....

    • @treelinehugger

I've identified two problems. There are probably more.
      1. The most significant problem is that >95% of churches are feminist. They redact whole sections of the Bible because they offend modern feminist sensibilities, their sensibilities. Feminism and Christianity are not merely mutually exclusive; they are in a battle to the death. When churches become feminist, the Word is corrupted, and they become heretical.
      2. They self-censor to avoid losing their 501c3 tax exemption. Churches have submitted to government bribery and censorship.

I guess it depends who you listen to on Sundays. I've had that same feeling in the past too, but it went away once i started to listen to pastors who did expository preaching so well, that i was eager to hear the rest of the message. And of course, it also helps that later in life, i went from cultural Christian to someone who truly believes in Jesus Christ. It made the Sunday messages much more interesting, once i had love for who the message was about.

I think sometimes about Peterson's wife. I recently saw the documentary on Peterson on amazon prime and she says she has "lost her husband to the world". I would assume because of all the time it takes up for his (what I would call) crusade. She has stood by him and "been a great help". I think maybe both Jordan and Tammy Peterson have made considerable sacrifices for our benefit. For that I am grateful.

yeah but i've never understood how religious people fall so short then. they fly planes into our buildings and kill 7000 people... that's obviously what the bible says NOT to do...i'm sure it also states the same in whatever "book" like the Koran and any other volume. so , given that, why are religious people murderous beyond belief? even if they don't KILL anyone, they still picket gay funerals, they still step over the homeless person dressed in their best sunday suit to hypocritically show off their piety. given all that, i'd have to agree with Hitchens, that religion poisons EVERYthing. when we can actually golden rule our lives, i'll swallow your religion whole. but since that IS NOT what i see happening when our preists diddle little boys, then avoid procecution and relocate to another field where they can repeat it. there should be no such thing as a rich church, yet the vatican has more gold than morals in any case. so we follow the "book" as interpeted any way we want to , you know, to break the rules stated clearly, but doesn't apply to them at all. they also shouldn't be tax free just because they were taught religion while their brains were still soft at age 5

As a theologically conservative, conventionally religious Christian, I must stress that Jordan Peterson's Christianity isn't Christianity in any historically meaningful sense. He is a Jungian who borrows Christian imagery and applies his own meanings to it. I enjoy Dr Peterson's material for the most part, but he's causing confusion about what Christianity is.
For those of us concerned with doctrinal orthodoxy, we have a lot of trouble with Dr. Peterson's use of Christian symbolism. Lest it be said that this is an issue of interpretation, Biblical scholars, linguists and the like can demonstrate where Dr. Peterson and Mr. Pageau err in their understanding of the text, so the issues are matters of fact rather than interpretation.

Introduced a 17 year-old student to Dr Peterson's podcasts as he was a self described nihilist and very deep thinker. He look so sad the day I met him. He said life was not worth living. I was concerned for him. There appeared to be a darkness in his face as we talked and he seemed without hope. I saw him again yesterday. Wow different young guy. Standing taller, happier, there was a light in his face... He couldn't wait to share he was still listening to Dr Peterson's talks and was really enjoying them. I dont know know how much this may mean to you but im in the USMC, and I joined bc i felt going to school and just "going through the steps" was killing me. I wasnt happy and that led to me being bitter towards everyone and everything but ik that i could do more and i WANTED to do more so I joined and plan to continue school eventually and im doing all of this to help as many people as i can yk? I took on more responsibility and im so damn happy I did! please dont take this as me being an asshole to you, actually think about it. Last night, I fell asleep watching bible stories, and woke up around 2:00 am to this video. It sounded so interesting , I was almost tempted to get up and watch it, but i made a mental note to watch later.
I did not know it would be so long, but once I started listening , I was immersed into the deep, thoughtful conversations. I normally listen to music on the ride to take the kids to school, but this was hooked up to the bluetooth . Even my 14 and 6 year old sons were engaged.

They are more central in their beliefs and can come together to discuss difficult subjects in a cordial manner. If you put even 1 polarized /extreme person in a conversation, typically nothing is learned because they are unwilling/insecure to accept any other views that contradict their own. We as people/countries/world need to meet in the middle to be able to actually HEAR/UNDERSTAND and enevidably LEARN about each other. Media/gov't are trying their hardest to polarize the world and they are winning at this point.. but I have faith we will see through this before it is too late.

Part of that is cleaning a little every day. It's something I struggle with as well. It's so "easy" to just drop something on a chair or leave it on a desk rather than put it away. Which contributes to clutter. Part of this folds back to the personal responsibility and how we go about managing our responsibilities, first to ourselves and then moving out from there.
I'm not great at it either, hell I keep trying to get the motivation to start working out to improve myself, it's hard and I find myself pushing on all sorts of margins trying to be better. It's hard. It sucks. It's also rewarding.

@UncleJemima420 For sure. Whats crazy to me, is that after deleting my social media, I would still reflexively open my phone and look for Facebook at dozens of moments throughout the day. (maybe more) Almost like any time there wasn't enough stimulus in my immediate environment, I would just go there by default and tune out the world. After a few weeks, I quit doing that and I noticed that I feel so much more aware of my surroundings. It sounds super stupid maybe...but like, I travel a lot for work and I notice people/animals/things...what they're doing around me. I feel like giving it up has not only reduced my stress, but lifted a burden off my mind. I don't need to come up with any snappy one liners. I don't need a "current/trendy" Facebook profile pictures. It's been super good =)

@UncleJemima420 Again i agree with everything u said , i like his books and his thoughts about life and how to make it better ,what i dislike is his argument about IQ and race , it tries to promote white supremacy when a cultural thing would be the right argument eg. Asian americans(Chinese & indians) are most sucessful & rich per person in usa but u would think looking at the state of India & china that wouldnt be the case . he boderline calls black american dumb & unsuccesgul by genes which is absolutely stupid , the argument for african americans being unsuccesful can be attrbuted to cultural phenomenon of single mother raising kids no father around , having a drug problem in black culture & hating authority

@Ezra Goldfinkelsteinberg The fact that you had to resort to name calling and bending and exaggerating what Dr. Peterson said already proves that you don't have a valid point. Also since the things you said weren't even remotely true, I think that especially shows how lost you are in this argument.

@Ezra Goldfinkelsteinberg Again, you're just throwing insults and bending the view/opinion of the person you don't agree with. Sure, you can say I'm worshiping JP and call me a kid. But in the end, that doesn't do anything other than put me down and make me feel like my opinion is invalid, at least I assume that's what you're trying to do. Anyways, I would try to change your mind about JP but I doubt an arguement/debate online will make a difference. So sry you feel that way, but hey, we all have a right to our opiniond. So cya and have a good life.

    1. True
    2. Extremely well thought-out
    3. Well-articulated
    4. Weirdly heartwarming
There’s something in here that is indicative of how to give a good compliment. I think Jordan acts out what he describes in his lectures about the one who ascends to the top has eyes all around his head (pays attention) and speaks magic words (uses well-articulated and effective speech).
He really paid attention to Joe, broke down why he’s successful, and then effortlessly stated it back to him in a really genuine way. Think if we all did this with those in our lives.

The first time I came across Jordan Peterson I was looking up something to do with motherhood as I was trying to navigate through some difficult aspects of motherhood. I came across a video of him talking about women and men in terms of parenting and I think he was talking about how kids need the mom to be their primary attachment more than the dad and I can't remember what else he said but whatever it was it helped me at the time with struggles I was having with motherhood.
There was a mom group I was in on Facebook and someone posted with a struggle they were having and it related to the video. I shared it and explained that it helped me and seemed relevant to her situation too.
Then another mom commented and said "be careful. Jordan Peterson is a known misogynist. I wouldn't be looking into what he says too much." Or something along those lines. I replied that I had no idea who he was but I didn't get that at all from this particular clip and found what he said in it to be helpful so I still felt it was worth sharing and fine to share. The mom who originally posted also said that she didn't find it misogynistic at all and that it helped her and she appreciated the message.
Then I did more looking into him with the presupposition that he was a misogynist and keeping an eye out for that.
It's been probably 3 years now and I watch a lot of his videos and understand them from the level he is speaking at, not from what he is often misconstrued as saying. The Cathy Newman video was super uncomfortable to watch, the way she attacked him relentlessly but it was amazing how he kept his cool.
There are definitely some things that women have to go through that men can't fully understand the weight of, and I think that at times his delivery doesn't always portray that. But what he is seeing and trying to make a difference with is the things that men go through that women can't fully understand and that people dismiss or aren't even aware of at all. It's a very similar issue to racism in the sense that we can't just blame all white people for being the problem when most now are not contributing to the problem. But we do have to be aware and sensitive of the residual effects of past traumas and help and give space for the healing process. Without pushing white people down as oppressors. I've been hearing about young kids in schools being bullied just because they are white. And a mom who's son was experiencing this posted about her son dealing with racism and multiple people telling her that because her son is white then it isn't racism. The whole definition of racism is treating someone badly based on their race.
But it's the same thing between men and women, now that women are no longer being repressed as we were in past years, there is a huge hate on men being oppressors and wanting to tear down men. We feel the collective past pain from the trauma that some women experienced. There is no denying that it was more commonplace years ago to beat your wife and treat her like your property. But it isn't fair to blame and condemn men who have done none of this, simply because they are male. And completely ignore the very real challenges that men today are facing, because it doesn't fit with the man hate style feminism that is popular right now.
In some ways, it may be because he is trying to make a point against something that is seen as so concrete - the patriarchy - that he gets his back up and is more vehemently against it and doesn't mention any of the nuance where there have in the past been power struggles that caused many women to suffer, just the parts against it. (In lots if cases he does go into this, but in some he doesn't, especially when only clips are shown which in that case isnt his fault at all, just what others are showing of him). But it isn't quite as black and white as - women didn't have the right to vote because they didn't go to war. That is a fair point and absolutely women didn't have to do that which is a huge privilege, women dont want to do the dirty jobs mostly, there are tons of valid explanations he gives for the pay gap and voting and things like that. But there have definitely been ways where women were oppressed and treated as sub human. But again, not all men were acting that way and not all women were being treated that way universally.
That may be where he loses some people, because it may seem that he is saying that women have it great and there is no oppression, when he says there is no patriarchy. But to me it seems that his main goal a lot of the time when speaking about men and women is to speak to what isn't being said. What most people aren't hearing or thinking of. Everyone knows women have been through some hard shit and treated in degrading ways but it's not that we have had things worse than men across the board or that it was all women all the time. And talk of the patriarchy generally lends to thinking of a few white men with all the money controlling everyone, but also men in charge in every profession and controlling all positions of power.
What Jordan talks about with the statistics makes perfect sense and seems common sense. You pull someone off the street there is a certain percent chance they are stereotypical to their gender in terms of being more on the compassionate side or more on the analytical side, more chance on one side than the other but not a crazy amount. But you go to the top percent in each area and it will be overwhelmingly one gender occupying all the top spots. So it makes sense for men to gravitate towards certain jobs and women to gravitate towards others, and men to get paid more if they are working longer hours etc. Although it definitely hasn't always been that way either and in some places there ARE misogynist still treating women like they deserve less because of their gender.
I was actually listening to Oprah talking about it the other day. About how when she was a news anchor the man that did the exact same job as her, same hours and everything, was being paid more and she confronted her bosses and they laughed her off and said she shouldn't be paid the same as him because she's a single female. Then when she had her own show she had female producers and wanted to give them a raise because they were being underpaid for the position and their response was "why? They're just girls!"
It does happen, but not to the extent that todays feminists often make it seem.
Anyways. I am a huge fan of Jordan Peterson and I love listening to him talk. It's heartbreaking to see how he has been vilified and his sole motivation is to help people and make a difference with his time here and DESPITE depression and all the physical obstacles he has had to face and being constantly misrepresented and vilified and attacked he STILL shows up for us and sacrifices his peace in the hopes it will help more people to live a better life. He is an absolute legend and yes he has faults like anyone but he does his absolute best to be aware of them and to work on them and be better and better all the time. Some of the ways I've seen people try to attack him (like the Cathy Newman interview) leave me wondering like have they never watched anything he's ever said before? Have they only ever seen snippets of him out of context and been told other people's smeary opinions of what he's trying to say? Lol so many people are on a manhunt to catch him saying something reprehensible. And also seem completely taken aback at his propensity to maintain a level head and challenge their stance against him lol he is fascinating to watch in those situations. The more I watch him, the more I understand where he's coming from and appreciate his perspectives and information.

The thing is, coming from a coach, (hard to listen to 2 non coaches talk about pedagogy) is that if you scale and structure the teaching correctly, you dont have to try to push a meaning onto anything, as the structure of the class holds it within it. the conflict comes when you scale and progress the class unnaturally for their abilities and stress means you try to teach meaning directly, and in the face of skill acquisition and a score keeping game like soccer, you end up bombarding kids with 3 levels of nuance that causes even more confusion and stress. Like the 'medium is the message', the structure and scale of the class carries the pedagogical meaning within it as to not be overtly obvious to the kid, like in school, when you re in 4th grade, you do not realize that you re preparing for precal but the curriculum is set up, to scale, for that process to happen subconsciously. You do not try to teach a 4th grader that in 8 years you are going to need to know how to do huge equations so you can get into college, cos all they ll ask is 'whats college?' and you ve confused and stressed the shit out of them when you re trying to teach them simple math.

@Mr. Bum Tickler the prior commenter was making a reference to Dr Peterson's recent medical problems and severe health scares. Unfortunately they seem to have either misread, been misinformed, or misunderstood what was presented to them.
The gist is that Dr Peterson had an extremely severe reaction to a Benzodiazipine he had been proscribed by his doctor. Benzos are also extremely addictive even in prescription doses, and the withdrawal can be life threatening. Dr Peterson tried tapering and micro tapering the meds but wasn't able to detox, so he and his family took him to a specialist clinic in Russia to detox and he was in a medically induced coma for quite awhile. He's now out of the coma and starting to recover, but has a long way to go. The real kicker that makes all this so much worse, is that all this happened and he was proscribed the meds to deal with severe depression as his wife has terminal cancer. AFAIK she's still alive, but IDK what her condition is like.
TLDR my reading is that the prior poster was implying that Dr Peterson had abused prescription meds instead of becoming addicted even while following the Dr's instructions, and then having an extreme reaction to the same meds.

Yup, he let the guy get away with dropping bombs pushing his false narrative of "equality of outcome" when the reality is the equality being fought for is equality of opportunity.
People given the opportunity to succeed, without being stopped due to race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, whatever. He's subtly making it seem like the other side wants the result to be pre-determined. In other words, he's completely misrepresenting the argument... shocking.

This conversation was exceptional in value. I've lost many things in life, a wife, a son, lots of time with the wrong people, etc. My family came to the U.S. as immigrants and survivors of war, genocide, and poverty. Learning English as a 3rd language and going through most of my life in this country has given me lots of perspective from a multi-cultural approach, leading me to being an avid reader; on average I try and complete 10-20 books a month and depending on the book itself I have detailed notes, papers, and writings that help me in the understanding and dissecting of ideas, concepts, stories, and other writings presented in the texts I read. I believe, life is an ongoing battle between the fact that life is never going to stop for anyone and being subject to this truth we need to make the absolute most of the time we do have on this Earth. We must improve ourselves daily throughout the divine pathway that is our life, and do so with humility and patience, with respect to our fellow human being. We are either the chaos or the order within the universe, I think God gave us the intuition and heart to understand this deeply. Thank you for what you do Joe Rogan and bringing the guests you do on your show. Peace.
