  • Can fruits help optimize your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio? As Dr. Rick Dina talks more about the importance of a healthy omega-6/omega-3 essential fatty acids ratio, he opens up about testing for DHA level to try answering the question in a nutshell. The good thing is that previously, Dr. Rick tested his wife, himself, and Robby Barbaro for their DHA level. The results were impressive and he credits a raw vegan, whole food, plant-based diet. So what gives? Check out the conversation for more about the healthy fats you need.
    Notes: Omega-6s and omega-3s don’t have the same effects on the body. According to science, omega-6s are pro-inflammatory, while omega-3s are anti-inflammatory. Undoubtedly, inflammation is essential for survival as it helps protect the body from infection and injury. But it can also cause severe damage and contribute to some diseases. The thing is, western diets have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids and are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids. Studies show that this kind of ratio in our nutrition promotes the risks of many diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. What's more, increased levels of omega-3 or a lower omega-6/omega-3 ratio, exert suppressive effects.
    Dr. Rick Dina, D.C. became interested in nutrition in 1986 and has been studying and practicing raw plant-based nutrition since 1987. He worked at Hippocrates Health Institute and for the Juiceman before entering Life Chiropractic College in 1993. After graduating in 1997, he practiced at True North Health Center from 1997 until 2001, helping patients recover from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and other nutritionally related health challenges with fasting and whole food plant-based nutrition. After teaching at Bastyr University, Rick maintained a private chiropractic and nutrition practice from 2003 until 2008 in San Rafael, CA, with his wife Dr. Karin Dina, D.C. Such fantastic info. I’ve been reading about fat (as I’m afraid of it but still need it) but this really topped up my knowledge. Love fruit and veg - thanks for showing why it works

    EXCELLENT explanation of how a low-fat whole food plant based diet with plenty of fruit can optimize our Omega 6-3 ratio with out taking a supplement. Thank you!

    Amazing video - makes sense! Where exactly does the conversion of ALA to DHA and EPA take place? I just wondered if the conversion could als be optimised if you separated any omega-6-rich foods (say almonds, olives) and omega-3-foods so the two don't compete as much. Your thoughts on this?

      Hate to burst your bubble but why would you want to master diabetes if you can get rid of it completely? Keeping blood glucose levels stable is not enough. You need to reverse insulin resistance & give your body the chance to heal. Especially if you have experienced insulinemia for a very long time & you now have insulin production issues. The only way to do this is on a very low carb diet. It is a misconception that vegans cannot do this. Just go very high fibre. All starchy veg & pretty much all fruit except berries are out. Just as important is NOT eating. Your body heals during periods of fasting & this is essential to not only reverse insulin resistance & diabetes but to stimulate normal function of the pancreas. Try 3-6 months of only eating very low carb food during an eating window of about 4 hours a day. This should be enough to completely reverse diabetes in less severe cases. After this your insulin sensitivity should be back to normal & provided you maintain a sensible eating window of about 6-8 hours daily & don't go overboard with refined/processed food you can resume a life free of diabetes. I am a former diabetic, 10 years clear & advisor on diabetic health & nutrition.

      @@brendabrown1691 Thank you Bren. I do keep an open mind I am curious as to what foods you would recommend to remain vegan /low carb/ high fiber? I am assuming that you would go higher fat via nuts, seeds, oils along with veggies , berries - so a vegan keto ? I agree with your eating window yes. As well yes to completely reverse this condition of course not just master an illness.

    Safflower oil is interesting.
    It has the worst 6 to 3 omega ratio, yet though it is over 90% Omega 9, it tests heart healthy.
    Nice theories presented on video.
    I always thought corn oil might be unhealthy but already knew better than not to consume soy and cottonseed oil.

    Thank you for this video. I wanted to ask what your thought on grains are. I have a chronic illness that makes it hard to gain weight and I don’t want to cut out grains. Even cutting all those bad oils/fats made me drop weight I couldn’t afford, but improved so many other aspects of my health. It’s a catch 22. I know grains can be high in omega 6, but don’t they have other nutrients we need as well?

      it's because saturated fatty acids accumulate in cell membranes from 2 things other than dietary saturated fat. 1) overconsumption of carbohydrate converts excess carb into saturated fat (this is the reason saturated fats are not deemed "essential") and 2) when you don't have other sources of fat to displace the saturated fat, saturated fat accumulates in membranes.
      Make no mistake, this man is actually not metabolically healthy. Possibly infertile (omega 6 deficiency causes infertility)

    So what i take from this is that it's best to not add any nuts or seeds to our diet even if its in small amounts? It seems to add to big of an impact for us that dont supplement with chia or flax Due to their high fat content. Can somebody help me to see If I am understanding this correctly? Thank you

    Should I worry about my brain health at 64 years old, vegan for four years. Do I need to supplement with DHA and EPA? Or, start consuming salmon and sardines? Thanks!

  • @gorphysanon7739
    @gorphysanon7739 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There is coconut oil that has trace amounts of omega 6s which will have next to zero impact in keeping you omega-3 positive if you eat fishes such as sardines or salmon along with some chia seed water.
    There's also fat-free foods if you can get them without sketchy ingredients or added sugars.
