  • Title: Dr. Martha Belury: Demystifying the Omega-6 Controversy
    Recording date: November 23, 2022
    Broadcast date: February 16, 2023
    Hosts: Drs. Bill Harris & Kristina Harris Jackson
    Guest: Dr. Martha Belury
    Background and key takeaways:
    In this episode, Drs. Harris and Jackson interview Dr. Martha Belury. Dr. Belury is the Carol S. Kennedy professor in the Department of Human Sciences of the Ohio State University. She received her PhD in biological sciences from the University of Texas, Austin, and her current focus is on the mechanisms by which bioactive lipids regulate insulin sensitivity and liver adipose tissue and muscle. She's also interested in the role of energy balance and cancer prevention. And one of the bioactive lipids that she studied extensively is linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid that today finds itself in the crosshairs of controversy. and For more information on OmegaMatters, visit: omegaquant.com/omegamatters-b...

    It's not that people back in the "old days" died at 22 or 35 - It was that infant mortality made the AVERAGE lifespan radically shorter. How do you not know that?

    Interesting and informative discussion. Thank you. I wonder if research on linoleic acid ever compared LA from (highly processed) seed oils with LA from more "natural" sources such as avocados (whole or oil) or eggs? Thanks again.

      The differences between those types of foods would not lie within the Linoleic Acid, it would lie in the overall nutritional makeup of the food. Something that's highly processed is more likely to be higher in added sugar, lower in fiber, and highly palatable.

    Our ancestors lived longer and their intake of linoleic acid was very little and it was from nature like eating nuts seasonally but not as we take today. So how can you tell us that linoleic acid is now good (necessary) for us while we are the sick ones while our ancestors were the healthy ones and lived longer?

    I’ve heard so Many who say don’t eat Omega6 foods. I started using Nordic Naturals Complete Omega when I was 70 and had experienced severe increase in “pins & needles” in the soles of my feet, along with Benfotamine, and found this cleared up the neuropathy very quickly & I’d already begun to taking Nordic Naturals Complete Omega for cognition/brain function support. But the recent bottle I bought without fully reading the label, as it’s a supplement brand I’ve been using or quite a long while. At home reading it’s label and was concerned when it lists Omega-6s - GLA (Gamma-Linolenic Acid) Omega-9s, OA (Oleic Acid) from Borage seed oil, (Gamma-Linolenic Acid)70 mg & Omega 9s 225 mg. So I searched on this site & am relieved to find your presentation, and will be listening to this video again!!!

    Thanks for this discussion. It’s so hard to weed through all the chaff when it comes to nutrition. We seem to demonize this and that, and the current scapegoat seems to be omega-6. It’s good to hear a detailed view of what the experimental results show.

      Unfortunately this is not a detailed view when its only one sided. I was expecting that she would show studies that are both for and against linoleic acid and take us through to her conclusion based on that evidence. But she went all the way for evidence supposedly supporting linoleic acid only.

  • @ShambaniFarm
    @ShambaniFarm 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I never trust these people who only take one side and provide one sided evidence. For me, a person who will present both sides of the story - the evidence for and against Linoleic acid and the evidence for and against saturated fat and then make a conclusion looking at both sides of the story. Not just bringing us a single-sided view.

      He never said that isnt eassential. The ratio is the real problem. I have eaten quarter kg butter in one day i wonder if one of those doctors can drink a quarter of seed oil without any problem…

    Just curious if any of the panelists have an opinion on Black seed oil. The ratio of O6 to O3 is very high, 232:1 which seems like that should be less of a concern after hearing this. Fair statement?

    • @OmegaQuantLab
      @OmegaQuantLab  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends significantly on the product. The important thing is getting an adequate total Omega-3 dose daily for your specific needs.

    • @ShambaniFarm
      @ShambaniFarm 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@OmegaQuantLabquite a suspicious answer - what do you mean it depends on the product? Expound on that. And are you saying that the ratio is not a concern or not - be equivocal on your answer, not wishy washy!

    dr gundry recommends pufa from nuts rich in omega 6 and dr eckberg recomends animal saturated fats poor in omega 6. so i dont know if i should get 700 calories daily from 150gr of walnuts, flaxseeds and pistachios like dr gundry or 200gr of meat and butter like dr eckberg.

    Can you explain is arachidonic acid good or bad lol?

    • @simont6439
      @simont6439 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's an essential fatty acid. Deficiency leads to dry, scaly skin, eczema, etc, as the most obvious symptoms.

    • @OmegaQuantLab
      @OmegaQuantLab  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Arachidonic acid plays an important role in enzyme regulation and inflmmation. The issue for most people is they aren't getting enough Omega-3s and that increases their ratio of Arachadonic acid to Omega-3s.
