@@benwilliams2713 I’d recommend thinking hard about what do you enjoy doing in general, and what would you like to do in life. It doesn’t have to be one thing, it can be 3 or 5 things. Then, ask yourself if any of those things *require* a degree. Then, narrow down to 2-3 things like plan a, b and c and proceed.
Figuring out your own way in life is not going to be easy, but you have to ask yourself these questions if you want to get places.
This is more of a philosophy/psychology area - what did you enjoy since you were a kid, how could you combine things you enjoy doing with making more than 30k/year doing it?..
Unfortunately, no one can answer *you* exactly what to do to be happy and rich simultaneously - you have to get there by yourself.
You can also check one of my videos called “the best 13 pieces of life advice” that hopefully can inspire you :)

College is great and the debt can be okay if you are smart about it. Example, I used to be a sous chef at a casino making 36k a year. Wife became disabled turned us into a single income home. I quit my full time job to work part time at a chili’s and took student loans to go to school for an associates of applied science in electrical. This college has a program with a local steel mill you get paid internships and a job offer after graduation. Graduated with 12k in debt, got a job 5 months after graduating at the mill. Made 135k my first year paid off my student loans in 3 months. Debt is not bad, college is not bad, just make a smart decision on it.

Dave is completely wrong about law school. Many of my friends are lawyers. And I can say for a fact that which law school you graduate from makes all the difference in the world. People from top rank law school like UCLA pretty much all have 100-250k jobs line up after school. People From from mid tier law school pretty much have a very very hard time finding work unless you are ranked in the top 10% of your class. In terms of lawyers it is a very competitive raker with many more lawyers than their are jobs. It’s one of the only careers that I know of that where you went to school and your ranking in your class is super important. Most law firms here in Los angles won’t consider you straight out of law school, if your not from a top ranked law school.
But for most other careers like do it’s or nurses or even engineers where you went to school for the most part does not matter. But it does matter a lot for attorneys. For law school it’s all based on ranking. Every school has a number or ranking and ever student in that class of the school also has a ranking number. If your from a mid rank law school and your also not too if your class it will me nearly impossible for you to get a job. I have seen this many times.

Julie you may be correct. I suppose I can only comment about souther California. Well here for the most part I would say law school is not worth it unless your going to a top 30 ranked school. I would say the profession of being an attorney is one of the only professions that I know of when were your went to school and how high you ranked makes a huge difference. This is my personally opinion being born and raised in Los angles and personally knowing many of my friends that are lawyers.

I'm on the East Coast. I was seriously looking into taking my LSAT and going to law school about 7 years ago (had a BS in Comp Sci), and your comment jives 100% with everything I was told and read. At least as far as getting your foot in the door with a big firm (ie; "getting paid"), where you got your law degree from was pretty much all that matters. When it comes to any other profession, including doctor, Mr. Ramsey is probably right that where you got your degree from won't really help or hurt you much. But law degrees are different. I've personally known a few people who graduated from non-Top 15/20 law schools that couldn't find a job, and they really struggled making ends meet for while. One eventually started his own tiny practice, and a few others found jobs with modest 5-figure salaries in the public sector, but it's not where you want to be with $200k in student loans. Like others already pointed out, believe it or not, the job market is flooded with unemployed and underemployed attorneys and people with law degrees (ie; who couldn't pass the bar). Doesn't mean you can't make it with a law degree from an unknown school, but your path is invariably going to be so much harder UNLESS of course you've already got connections lined up. Really the best advice on this is for people to do their own research on this topic, and find out the truth for themselves. Almost everyone who's actually gone to law school will probably concur with what we've said.
Also for the record, I decided not to take the LSAT and try for law school. I decided odds just weren't in my favor.

Thank you for the help and compassion and guidance! 🙏🏻💕 May God keep Blessing you. May he keep you healthy and strong-minded so you can keep helping all of us, Sir!!! I love your program. It might seem strange to ask you this over the comment section, but I'd love to see invite you and your sweet wife to dinner. I live in North Carolina nearby a beautiful beach! I know my entire neighborhood ( especially myself) would love to have you!! God Bless you.🙂🙏🏻

It's funny that I have an 2-year Associates Degree for a targeted field and I sit surrounded by people in my corporate office who went to 4-year university who make far less than I do. My character, intelligence and people skills pushed me up the ladder. Plus, they are illiterate, but that's another topic. They surely owe at least $40K in loans. My loans are paid off.

My parents raised me to believe that college was the only option and directed me to expensive colleges based on the premise that it will always be worth it; they were wrong and now I'm saddled with suffocating debt despite getting a general business degree. I was young and too stupid to say "no".
If you're in high-school you need to consider three things:
#1. Do I know for certain that I want to enter a field that requires a college education, like law, medicine, engineering, (etc)?
#2. What options are available to me to achieve my goals?
#3. Am I uncertain about what career field I want to enter?
#4. What alternatives to college are available to me?
#5. What are the financial costs of my decisions?
If your answer to #1 is "yes", then before you go to college you need to thoroughly answer #2 so that you know what your options are to accomplish your goals. I recommend talking to professionals in your desired career field and asking them what options are available and writing down their tips.
But if your answer to #1 is "no", then skip #2 and go to question #3. If your answer to #3 is "yes", then you need to thoroughly answer #4. Are there vocational schools in your area that you can learn a trade skill from? Are there apprenticeships available that can give you a path to a quality career? I would recommend talking to professionals that have taken these routes and getting advice from them.
Lastly, you need to answer #5 accurately and thoroughly.
If you're planning on going to college, like Dave Ramsey said, you need to understand the costs and don't get tricked into paying for a fancy school thinking that will be your golden ticket in life. It won't.
But if you're stuck on step #3, consider taking time off from school to work and gain perspective in life. You don't want to pursue an education in something that you won't use but still have to pay for.
College is only worth it IF YOU USE THE SKILLS YOU LEARN IN COLLEGE and THE SKILLS YOU LEARN WILL EARN MORE MONEY THAN YOU SPENT ACQUIRING THEM. If you have to spend 15 to 20 years paying off your student loans, then you've picked the wrong path/school because that means you will have only been earning a profit for about 20 years by the time you are 60 years old!!
So, if your parents or friends are pressuring you to go to school and you don't know what you want to study, don't cave in because it will have consequences for the rest of your life. And as they tell you when you take out loans, you can't declare bankruptcy. DEATH or REPAYMENT are the only ways out of student loans.

I got my Bachelor in Computer Science from a University in South America. I moved to the USA with a job offer and got two Masters on an American University. The job I kept during the time I was getting both masters only required the Bachelors, so they didn't care where I got the diploma from as long as I knew how to perform the job with minimal or no supervision.
So yes, where do you get the degree is not as important as how you use the knowledge you get and HOW YOU BEHAVE in your job; show proactivity, common sense, be polite and respectful to superiors, don't show entitlement (don't act like the company owes you a promotion or more money for fewer hours), go the extra mile with each task and doors will open.

My best advice to avoid getting into debt is to avoid going to college straight out of high school. Give yourself some time and while you were in high school, if you completed any AP classes, those are already being deducted from your major requirements. In the semester following high school and summer, focus on getting a driver's license. Once you have that and some cheap car that you or your family can afford, you can begin to get around with it. Then find a place where you can complete something like a sort of "2-year" degree, or at least a school that can teach AP classes to any student which would help lower the price of college tuition. Once you have as many AP classes as possible, then go get as many scholarships as possible to cover the cost of college and lower your debt once you do get out of college. Then select your STEMM+Law major and compllete its requirements since you would only need a few more classes and labs as you got everything ready even before paying for college. Once you get accepted by the university of choice, at this point you don't have to directly sign up for the classes, instead collect every syllabus and get all your textbooks, and spend a semester reading textbooks especially for those who struggle in college. Be sure that you are able to answer textbook questions since most textbooks provide problems and questions. Then go to take college like its an exam and you can afford to continue a side job until you are done from it. Then once you have your major you are done unless you want to go to graduate school which is very expensive and will put you down a lot in student debt so when it comes to graduate school, again go through the textbook route so you know the material and enable yourself to do college like an exam where you just have to do the classes. This strategy will enable you to always have some kind of job while studying that supports living expenses and save you the cost of living expenses of college.

The problem in the US about healthcare and education in my opinion is less about who pays for it(whether the state or individuals) and more about the fact that price gouging has soared up the price too high. The government should interfere at some point in these crucial matters and limit this behaviour. There is no reason insulin and other medications in the US should cost as much as they do. Medicine and basic foods should be excluded from the "free market" if food prices soar to the point where only the wealthy can afford it, would the government allow everyone to starve in the name of free market? It should not, same logic should apply for healthcare and education...

If you are in your 20s or 30s or even 40s get it............

  • @mattcollins4550
    @mattcollins4550 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Dave is mostly right here with one glaring exception.
If you can go to a top tier college it will absolutely make a difference in your career path. Lawyers especially have to deal with this as the graduates from the top 10 schools are practically guaranteed to have high paying jobs at a firm once they graduate, if they want it. Many other career fields are the same way. Going to an Ivy League school will absolutely increase one's employability and profitability over the course of their career, assuming their field of study isn't fluff (German Polka history, etc).
But Dave is also right when he says that one can go to a mid level or even a low level school and still be very successful too.
