college is not really "necessary", it really depends on what you wanna do in your life. for example, if you want to become a doctor then of course college is necessary but if you're trying to work a job that does not require a college degree then its not necessary. nowadays there r so many options without a college degree so we cannot label it as something completely necessary
I think it just depends on what you want to do. I wanted to be in Healthcare education. There is no way to do that without College. That being said there are many other jobs that are out there without it.
Exactly, my cousin was super smart in high school, went to college realized that it was not for him, he went in to iron working and after a few years he is not make over 60$ an hour and plus overtime he makes close to 130+k a year

Surprised depression and mental health disorders weren't discussed. A lot of people leave college because of burnout, depression/ anxiety, first people in their families to go, or in my case who graduated early, do not get enough financial support (and do not want to go into debt) so there is not a lot of opportunities for some people to have access to internships, and no social support outside of somewhat robotic career counselors in big colleges.

You can’t say overall whether college is necessary or not. College is necessary for some but not all. Would you be comfortable with a Doctor who didn’t go to college? Or a building built by an engineer who didn’t go to college? Or being taught by a teacher who didn’t go to college?

College is necessary depending on the career you want to be in. If you want a career that requires a degree, then yes (i.e. nurse, lawyer, dentist etc.). Also, college is a great networking tool. Having connections is very important...college is more than just getting a degree. I wish more people would talk about the other things that come with college as well.

Highschool is failing kids by not having shop classes, not introducing more kids to TRADES because not everyone wants to go to college or has the money to do it. So they paint people into this corner where they feel like they either need to join the military or work a 9-5. We should be teaching kids TRADES and also teaching them about adult responsibilities and saving money because not every kid has someone to teach them that.
There are only so many jobs in the trades. Hundreds of people are applying to 16 apprenticeship spots in my area.

That really comes down to the states. Now a days these states are happy and ready to fight culture war issues….but are fine to let their state (like mine AZ) be 48-49th in education for decades.

I live in EU and more particularly in France, and I can tell you that there are a lot of college that are expensive , and the one that aren’t are either expensive are highly competitive or the number of places are limited

It’s unrealistic for most teens to know what they want to do for a living, and there’s no way to know if college is necessary if you don’t know what career path you want. So a lot of kids go to college in order to keep their options open, only to realize later that they never needed a degree.
This explains me perfectly. I went to college and got my bachelor's degree after nine semesters. I'm 35 and have never had a full-time job. I still have no idea what I want to do for a career.

@@Criner05 yea that’s another part of college. Choosing certain degrees, some degrees will make it so you’ll always have a job , and some are a lot harder to find a job with. STEM, Supply Chain, Accounting, etc are degrees that offer great job security
@TMCS I’m not saying it’s difficult to research and pick a major. I’m saying it’s difficult to pick something at 17, 18, 19 that you’re gonna want to continue doing for decades, especially when you haven’t had work experience to know what you like and dislike about actual jobs, rather than just subjects / topics.
I feel like trade schools are very underappreciated in the American education system. Academia isn't for everyone and with an apprenticeship you already have a small salary and learn to be self-sufficient, like doing your own repairs or handicrafts. In Germany there is a saying "With a trade in hand you find gold in every land."
Trade schools are under encouraged, and that's a problem, but from those I've talked to who are in the trades, it's very hard on the body. The job security and pay is great, but it's a balance thing.
Definitely under appreciated. I am worried that many or most can be automated. So how do we navigate that issue because its becoming a bigger and bigger threat every year. Curious, if all trades were automated, what would the work force transition to?

I think the phrasing of pro-college vs anti-college doesn't reflect the topic of the conversation. It's about the observation that going to college is considered to be the norm and in some way an indicator/guarantee for succes or happiness in later life

I have a 4yr university degree in design, and though many graphic design jobs don't require a degree, there is no way I'd have gotten the same experience and grinded as hard if I had just self taught myself. I needed a reason to push myself, and also being with other designers really helped me! But others do just fine being self taught or doing a shorter course for a diploma :) All depends on the person and what they wanna do!
Now the question is do you need thousands of dollars in debt in a big building to achieve that?
What about a community of desingers in a nice building being trained by an industry experienced graphic designer.
@@dave1T I do agree most universities and colleges are too expensive! I'm in Canada and don't think it's as bad here. And the classes I had were taught by those in the design field and they weren't just profs.

Certain fields cannot be taught in an apprenticeship manner and vice versa.

College works for most people. I'm just trying to point out certain flaws and some of us go in blindsided most of the time and it's a completely different reality once we come out into the Real world.
Especially the notion of college will make you rich.
I jus believe the people advocating for college education should be more transparent about it and share the facts about reality.
For example life will be hard if you had a Liberal arts degree compared to a stem degree. Unless you go to an ivy league. Then you can work anywhere with your Liberal arts ivy league.
I also believe we advocate for economic efficiency. But that would be a utopia.
I work as embedded software engineering for medical devices. I am self-taught. Yes, my path was harder than if I were to go to college to study it. But, my path is definitely possible. I hate it when people push "you need a related college degree or else we won't hire you" in my field. I learned electronics AND programming on my own. I have 2 years of professional experience and I see no value in going back to school to get a relevant degree.
I wish there was some Asian representation on this panel. Asians have higher number of college admission and graduation rates, but we still get discriminated to some degree (not to say that asians have it the hardest among other POC). For example in 2019 Harvard was brought a lawsuit for the discrimination against Asian applicants in its admission process. "Researchers at Princeton University found that applicants who identify as Asian need to score 140 points higher on the SAT than a white applicant in order to have an equal chance at admission into an elite college"

The most necessary thing is to really take the time, sit down, with a mirror or journal or a close friend and really figure out, what are your skills, your talents, and who do you most want to help. Whether you are 16, 36, or 66, doesn't matter. With that, you can figure out what career best fits all of those things together. Then and only then, do you decide if college is necessary to get on that path.

College isn’t only about the “school”education, its also about the experience about becoming your own person, learning to live on your own, learning how to network. It’s not necessary but definitely a worthy experience to be in the real world but still protected

Going to college changed my life for the much better. K-12 education is really lacking. College should be accessible for everyone and it’s purposely not because an uneducated population is much easier to control.

It’s a lot better than the people who never got to leave their small towns for college. Instead of cancelling student loans, how about the government does what Japan did and cut loan interest rates to 0.5-1%. You pay back what you borrow. Also, significant scrutiny in college financials via public ledger of operation costs. Encourage alternative options like trade school, starting businesses, work that needs to be done.
The job I want to pursue requires college, the job my husband is pursuing does not. And his job will end up making more money and costing less in learning to do the job. You can be successful and live a happy life with or without college!

@@jathebest2835 yes I do, I 100% know it will be stressful. I will probably teach kids that have horrible things going on at home, I will teach children that struggle with issues I don’t understand. But I will strive to be a safe and fun place for my students while teaching them. I had horrible teachers growing up and that’s not what I will be.
As someone who recently dropped out of university(I live in Canada for uni/college are different) Ijust wanna say uni/college isn’t for everyone and that’s honestly fine .Do your research before wanting to enter a career,school isn’t the only way to go! I know apperenterships are becoming more popular especially for skill trade careers.
I'm graduating highschool next year and being a doctor is fin so I wanna do it ( I live in canada too) I wanna go to university but Im scare that they wouldn't let me in cuz of my marks so therefore I wouldn't know what to do and plus I will disappoint my parents cuz they all want me to be a doctor more than I wanna be one. @@lovelyvanelle6052 hey, fellow Canadian here. The internet is not the place to get life advice of that level but here are my thoughts. My sister is a doctor, just graduated med school. Before that, she graduated university with 9.8 gpa, and high school with near perfect grades. Being a doctor was HER dream, not anyone else’s. Still with all of that, it was and still is extremely difficult. She got refused from med school once or twice, had a burnout, suffered a lot.
I advise you do study in something that truly interests you because becoming a doctor is unthinkably difficult for even the best and most passionate students. And I didn’t even talk about the horrible debts…
And even if you had the best grades and unlimited money, you should not be a doctor if you don’t want to. You should pursue a career that interests you, it’ll be better for you and for hospital patients

The worth of university also really depends on the country you’re from. I ‘only’ studied a social science but all the jobs I have applied to required a degree, usually even a master’s. I think the fact that university here is basically free makes a huge difference.

It's interesting. I was taught in school that you either go to college or join the military. I took another path and I'm happy because I broke the mold. Out of all my friends who went to college, they all have jobs that have nothing to do with their major. Unfortunately, in most cases, college is just scam. I don't believe it always was, but more recently it seems that people are finally catching on.
Around where do you grow up? I just ask because I've always thought the military tries to recruit teens more in certain areas..

You don't have to specifically go into a career that you studied in college. I think the way it is set up in the US is a scam, since it forces mass amounts of debt onto people. But if we treated it just like primary and secondary education as an option anyone could take who wishes to continue school past the standard 18 years of age, and it came at a free at point of purchase choice, it would be less likley people would view it as a scam.

@@user-nf9xm7is3m recruiters come to my school a lot and there’s some that already enrolled. They talk about lots of benefits to encourage ppl to join. Free medical care and college being the biggest reasons plus getting a job position.

for me college has been a life changing experience in terms of perspective. im barely going into my senior year, and the growth i’ve made as a person, has been beneficial not only for my future career, but my view on the world and myself. i think college can be beneficial for others but as some of the participants stated, it’s not for everyone and that’s okay. btw s/o to the social work majors!!
I’m 23 and make 6 figures in technical sales. I can definitively say that not finishing school makes your professional career much harder than it needs to be. Don’t go ASAP after high school. Don’t spend unfettered amounts of money. But get the piece of paper that says that you finished.
Mehak is completely wrong when she says that people would refuse to hire you if you had a lot of work experience and no degree. A lot of companies will refuse you and the liklihood that you will have a lot of work experience with no degree is low in itself
I'm part of hiring decisions at my company and we don't hire anyone without a degree. No one in our field does. Most job listings will require a Bachelors or higher (sometimes asks for an Associates and are working towards a Bachelors, but that's rare), or 5/10+ years experience. The catch is that 5 years ago, no one was hiring with a degree. We don't really consider freelancing experience either. So, yeah. She was very wrong.

I am a college student myself, and I find myself agreeing with both pro and anti-college points of view in this video. What they mentioned, I have at some point in my life ask myself is college everything I want to pursue. After thinking I decided to pursue it part-time while doing a job in my field of study to get experience. One piece of advice I can give someone who is thinking of pursuing College is to have a side job in the field of study you wish to pursue. Cause at the end of college employers tends to care less about degrees and want their workers to have some kind of 2-3 years of work experience. Take my advice since I know of people who finish college and are home and haven't gotten their dream job due to no work experience or due to having too many qualifications.
Very interesting topic. I don't think it's strictly necessary, except for some very specialized jobs, but it's definitely a great experience that I don't regret one bit.
I say GO TO COLLEGE! You'll typically make more or be the boss of those who didn't complete the degree.
Degree + experience + certifications = you should be straight.
Just be particular about what companies you want to work for. Think IT, utilities (electric/gas), railroad industry, etc. Research companies that offer higher compensation than others.
And ALWAYS negotiate your salary, whether you have a degree or not. Never feel inadequate.

idk how she even came to that conclusion. Go to any online job board and tons of the jobs listed require a 2-year degree/4 year degree/ or some type of masters. Even jobs you think wouldn't require college education. Lot of companies want to just know you can follow through on something. Degrees show companies you can be disciplined, even if that's not true and someone with no degree has even more discipline, a paper to back it up is more tangible.
there are certain degrees that are needed for jobs. would u want someone without tertiary education backing being your doctor, nurse, engineer or environmental specialist? no. while there are things college doesnt teach you that u have to learn on the job the opposite is also true. degrees show that you're trainable and you have legitimate knowledge to back your opinions/decisions for that job.

University is not always about getting a career. It provides knowledge and skills you probably wouldn’t gain in an ordinary job straight out of education. It’s not for everyone but people should still go to pursue their interests and have a unique perspective of the world, and no they don’t brainwash you.

As a Black woman I needed the degree to work in a corporate environment. The money that I make couldn't of happen if I am self taught.
I agree that community college definitely helps finding your path, as it did me (Wanted to do Nursing, ended up pursuing another Associates in Criminal Justice). However, there is ALOT of opportunity in community college. Pam said she couldn’t join clubs or have leadership roles. Clubs and leadership roles are very present in community college. So much so that people actually care about each club. You aren’t just a number because these leaders and advisors actually care. The transition from community to university is a big step. I had so much help in community college and so much support. I earned a leadership scholarship that made me student ambassador for 2 years, which covered my tuition costs. You can learn a lot from community college, I enjoyed it more than I have been university. In community college, you are not just a number. You actually belong and administrators actually help you.
From a college student, I’d say if u r self-disciplined u don’t need college at all u can become the best anything from home in 2022.

Also you ask what my level of education is, but think an art major degree reaches 100k in debt. I agree art degress are useless but so are your math skills. Also calling people losers shows you’re very immature and the only joy in your life is belittling others from behind a screen. If you’re trying to promote going to college, it’s not a very smart tactic by acting so volatile and uneducated.
@X5J9 The funny thing is with a 100k art major, you're not going to end up a McD cashier unless you have a 1.1 GPA and never bothered with projects or internships while enrolled. With an art major, some diligence (and maybe a little perseverance), you will probably get a decently paying job. You might not make as much as a brain surgeon, fine, but if you studied Art then you were not really planning on becoming filthy rich either way.

I think 8:05 is a bit of a misconception on her part. Many jobs REQUIRE post-degree internships. I personally am working towards becoming a therapist which is DEFINITELY a field that needs higher education. It requires an internship in order to finish the degree and become licensed as well as supervised experience post-college. Not all of us have a choice in the internships and we couldn’t do a lot of them without a certain degree or certain classes taken.
@TMCS trust me, I totally understand. I’m just trying to be understanding coming from her perspective. But I do hope people realize that you DO need college for several jobs whether you have experience or not. Once I graduate and pass the NCE, I will be able to go for an APC position. There are people in Louisiana that are addiction counselors (don’t need degree to do that in that state) and they have years and years of experience. Yet, I will still be hired over them because college is necessary.

Instead of making excuses, she needs to accept that she will be better at certain things than others in life and that is okay. It is okay to find a job that does not require college. But to tell yourself that a job will hire you because of experience over a college graduate when they tend to hire college graduates is not an accurate statement and it only hurts her to continue to think that way. But that is the therapist side coming out in me I guess🤷🏼♀️
@TMCS yeah I definitely agree with that as well. She is coming from a place of a lot of upper class privilege if her parents are helping her out with things. Like trust me, I would love to be traveling to Paris or Tokyo and doing whatever I want but I have to work and go to school to survive😂 and I’m even lucky because my parents let me live at home while I’m getting my masters and many people don’t have free housing during this time and that is huge for me. It’s how I’m able to work and stay debt free rather than having to spend it on rent. You have to make smart decisions early on so that you are set up later on in life. I will be a fully licensed therapist in Georgia (which takes longer than most states) by 25 or 26 because I have been going to college non-stop since my junior year of highschool. I didn’t get to take a gap year because that isn’t an option for me. So I totally get where you are coming from because it is annoying to hear people say things like that when it’s just not that simple for the majority of people in the world. But yeah, like I said, especially if her dad’s a doctor, she doesn’t want to admit she is lacking his skills in schooling. She just wants to talk about her amazing life without college while not noting why that is possible for her. Reminds me of Kylie Jenner calling herself a “self-made” billionaire. I’m sure if I was in a famous family and born into money that I could create a pretty great business as well. That is not self-made😒
There is only one reason why I feel everyone should go to college, and that is for the college experience. The college experience breaks people into new social situations that are argueably condusive to success. With that said though, you can literally go to a community college to get that experience, you don't need to go to uni for that. Past that one reason though, there are probably about a million reasons why you shouldn't do college. If your profession requires it, then go. Otherwise, if you're unsure, go find yourself, if you know otherwise, then don't do it.
The whole "if you know how to do the job without a degree they will take you" sounds really American to me because in Europe literally in every job ask for your degree. If you don't have one they will be like "what are you even doing here"
Honestly, this was my favourite discussion. I hate school but I’m in Uni and I graduate next summer and the day I graduate, will be a wonderful day for me but probably not my pockets.

More career focus 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I feel like that is so important especially from this part of the world where I come from. We spend most of our school life learning so many things that are not even applicable to our future careers and by 23 24 25 you leave university with no clue whatsoever on how to navigate and apply yourself strategically. More time should be given to learning skills and crafts and pushing students in more focused career paths.
I understand the academic and educational aspect on both ends of the argument. But how come nobody talked about the social experience? Like obviously you go to college for the education but I definitely made some unforgettable memories, experienced a lot of "firsts" with my roommates, and really kind of learned so much about myself and developed as a person just through different things I got involved with, whether extra curricular or recreational activities.

Unless you are someone who knew throughout their lives what they wanted to be, I always suggest two options for everyone:
1) Take a year off after high school and get a job. Work for a living and see if you don't mind working your way up from the bottom.
2) Go to a community college. They are quite cheap tuition wise and is a great place to try different classes to see what you might be interested in (I changed my major in my community college two times before I earned my associates).

It really depends on the career path you want. I expect my doctors have all went to college. I expect the surgeon operating on me has went to college. I don’t expect the person flipping my burger to be college educated.

When I made the decision to go to college/university I just knew I didn't want to end up in debt so I worked two jobs to save the money and even though things didn't workout the way I wanted i'm very happy that i'm still able to get a higher education, and honestly College/University is not for everyone but for me personally is really important to have a degree because I know it will help me so much and open future doors for me.

Love this video and the discussion. I am definatly pro college but could relate to both sides of this discussion. As I find myself an industry leader in a field that has nothing to do with my degree, I can absolutely relate to the anti college arguements, however looking at my personal experiences, I would not be where I am personally or professionally without college and a college degree. Hindsight being 20/20, I would not have wasted my first 4 years of college on a degree I had and have no interest in. College is not for everyone but those that do choose to attend, i higly recommend that you are intentional about what you ate going to college for and do not commit to an expensive college untill you are sure of what you want.
As a person who wants to go to college I don’t think it should be forced on anyone because some people don’t have the money or even the desire to go to college
This is why I really like the high school I go to now. They don't just talk about university like its our only option, they talk about other paths and even are connected to a few trade schools in the area that we can apply to for free or very cheap and have student sessions so we can learn trade work earlier if we want. They're also not against university and will help as much as they can to get you in. I personally want to go, and I'm glad Canada has cheaper tuition lmao
Most People that have college degrees are coming out of college over qualified, broker than they were before, and 0 hands on experience. Yet it was seen as an only option for most households.

exactly this. overqualified for entry level jobs, no experience for anything higher. so you're having to work at walmart or target while you do online courses to learn the things what jobs are expecting of you anyway. by the time you do all that, you're making less than the person who went straight into the workforce and has no student debt.
I definitely think for a lot of specific career paths having a dedicated degree is essential.

College should be necessary for certain career fields, but it shouldn't be required if you're not pursuing a major stem or arts program. Before you go to college, don't look for 'yes' men. You need to do a cost benefit analysis. You should see whether taking X amount of debt is worth the degree and increased pay/networking. You should see if this debt will set you back financially for future goals. And for gods sake, work first before college.

It’s not that we should eliminate Colleges/Universities. It’s just that from 1980-2020 the cost has gone up by 170%. As in all things opportunists take advantage of high demand. Well guess what….20 years from now those tuition costs will look affordable again once parents and students realize that through online learning and apprenticeship you can get into most careers.
Before watching this video I will state my personal experience. I’m pro college. I went to college and have some credits but I was never able to finish and get my degree. I now suffer every day with chronic pain. I’m in my middle 40’s and I do very physical labor every day. Because it’s hard to get a job that doesn’t require physical labor without a college degree. I tried for disability. However, here in the United States the government doesn’t care if you’re in physical pain or not unless you can’t walk because of pain. So I’m stuck. I have to have money to live therefore I work with pain. At my age I don’t have money to finish college or time. So I would encourage anyone to get a college degree.
Now have business owners and executives do this, see how their opinions change.

I think college is likely to be more necessary if no one in your family has gone to college before you, it’s kind of like “leveling up” your family line. I have the privilege to not go to a four year school, because both of my parents did, my mom even went on to get her master’s degree in Education. Ironically, my mom doesn’t think kids should go to college nowadays. I think back in the 50s/60s/70s/80s it was a great way to make more money, but the cost of university has majorly outpaced wages & inflation. It is a financial trap for most people. They get 18 year olds to take out tens of thousands in loans, if not more. Like Mehak said, with modern technology, you can learn so much online for free or from books for cheap! If your main goal is financial freedom, college is not ideal for most. I also loved KCs points in this.
This discussion is really interesting because the way that one of the discussions was handled was that if you want X career, you of course need college. The issue I have with that, is this: In the healthcare field, there are many careers that require graduate school, not just a 4 year college degree. Same with law. In law, they require law school. If you want to be a professor, you most likely have to get a master's or PhD. I tell people to not go to college if you're after something like business, economics, art, history(unless you want to be a professor), sociology, psychology...you can find all the books your friends use in their classes to learn the material and learn on your own to be able to sit for a certification exam. The only reasons you should go to college and beyond are if your future career requires it to sit for board exams or if you are generally curious in learning about broad education or curious about certain topics, not necessarily looking to be part of a career in that field.

I've always believed that the value of college is based on what you learn from it. College isn't just about the education itself, but the experiences, the connections, and the amount of work you put in. If you don't see the value in it, you're not going to get much out of it anyways.

I've said it once and I'll say it again until I am heard. Do a vs. between HBCUs and PWIs. Both aren't different in a bunch of ways down to their history and have different feelings for both. Getting different perspectives from those that have gone to either type of school or even both would be invaluable.
One thing I was surprised nobody really touched on was how beneficial going to a 4 year university is for just character growth. It's not solely about getting a job. The life experiences you get from being away from your hometown with a bunch of people your age with different backgrounds makes you just a more well rounded person. The connections and experiences you get from it you will never be able to get again in life. The 18-22 era of you life is soo awesome and you miss out on the full potential of that era by not going and you'll never have a chance to feel the way it feels again in life. I understand college isn't for everyone but this idea that you go to college soley for a job post and it serves no other purpose is wild to me. I would have never met my best friends for life without it and been exposed to so much diversity that just makes you a better human.
I've been through the wringer in so many different ways in university getting my double major -one of my degrees being sociology- so I could go on for HOURS talking about everything academia deserves to be criticized for... But despite all the mistakes and struggls I'm glad I never chose a different path or dropped out.
It's important to hold academia accountable and push for better changes. It's important to FUND and encourage post secondary education. Studying trades, science, even music and philosophy is critical for a thriving and critical thinking society.
I have family who’ll rant at every gathering about how university isn't worth anything anymore, or that they’re brainwashing kids with some liberal agenda (it's not just something people whine about in the US). Drives me wild that they don't listen to my defence of post-secondary education, but it's hard to explain nuance to people who think you're just apart of the problem.
But at the end of the day, it just scares me how systemic failures and inequality is resulting in people losing faith in getting an education.

What she said about the ISA thing has already been in place in the UK for years. Here, you only pay back your student loan once you start earning above a certain threshold (currently £27, 295) and it rises every year. if you earn a penny below that you pay back nothing. After 30 years regardless of how much you've paid back whether its a little or not even a penny, your entire loan is wiped. This puts emphasis on both the University and the government to deliver value to the student and in return they'll get value back via the loan.
Per the first question - in my moms eyes WE HAD TO GO TO COLLEGE , if y’all know the board game life , when I was a kid my mom made me and my sister choose the route of education rather than work . She would get mad at us if we played the game the work route .. I ended up going to college and started to figure out in my own that I’m paying for something that I could learn more in jobs or internships. hi, so I would like to share my personal story as someone who is self-taught and did things the unconventional path. I graduated with a math degree. I did not learn crap about jobs or what not from my education. And I did not want to do any of the jobs that a "math major" should do like being a teacher, data analyst, actuary, blah blah blah. I landed an electronics internship in my junior year because I taught myself basic electronics. I also learned programming on my own. I wrote firmware (software) that controls some wireless data communications on radiofrequency computer chips. I graduated a few years ago and today, I work as an embedded software engineer who writes software that goes on medical devices. In college, I only took a few physics courses. I DON'T HAVE AN ENGINEERING OR COMPUTER SCIENCE DEGREE/EDUCATION. I learned all my skills on my own and I learned from my coworkers and other professionals in the workforce. If this pisses you off or makes you uncomfortable, I suggest you go get a life. There are plenty of kids who graduated with engineering or computer science degrees that can't even land jobs. I spend my free time learning electronics and programming because I always look to improve my skills. I have 2 years of professional experience and I'm here to stay. I don't need the degree. I'm already working in the field in the job that I want to be in.
Most companies will at least give you the interview for a SWE job if you have a math degree though, so it is pretty relevant.

I'm planning on learning programming that's off course at the same time as doing a CS degree. The degree alone is worthless considering how many people have it.

I feel like it's a bit misleading to say you can still succeed without a college degree. While it's true that it's possible, college generally just sets you up better for what you want to do and pursue. Looking at only the millionaires that dropped out or didn't go is survivorship bias. Like KC said, statistically college is the best option economically for most people.
I think most college students can agree that college is mostly unnecessary but it just depends on the career path you want to take
As someone that went to college and has a master degree in something to be realistic, it's all about if you have the proper state license to do the thing you have a MA in. It's so frustrating
Start with the end in mind-figure out the result you want and get help on drawing the roadmap to get there. If college is part of that roadmap then go. Otherwise, don’t go but make sure to get educated on your trade/craft of interest in some way.
That’s the advice I would have given myself back in high school instead of just going to college outright.
There's a lot of nuances that are forgotten in the video. Like georgiatech, the acceptance rate for out of state students is 12% and they don't require any essays or supplemental essays, just your transcript. And we don't even know for sure if that admission counselor was their when they reviewed her application cause they don't usually give those answers out.

Some careers need degrees. Depends on the industry you want to be in. But if u don’t need a degree then it’s all about networking and gaining experience and working your way up. Know what you really want to do before deciding if college is needed.
I mean not being from the US and watching this video e seeing the comments it's really interesting, because, here where I'm from (Brazil) not going to college isn't even an option for most people I think. That is because, here, if you want to have at list a decent paid job you HAVE to have a college degree
