His degree most definitely did not cost that much. He accepted the FULL amount which generally 2/3 of the amount more than covers stuff aside from tuition.
Rachel Hubbard yeah WVU costs $25,000 a year out of state now. If he’s 35, even if he just graduated and took out cost of living, I’m just not sure how he took out that much.

You can go into HVAC and make north of $100k/yr. I'm sorry, a degree in exercise science isn't worth it, at least not in this caller's example. All taking place in a setting that is not teaching you to critically think for yourself, you can and do actually get punished if you think for yourself and come up with ideas that even seem to contradict a strict adherence to the lesson plan. but most people do not care, bc at the end of the day, its just daycare! He has to be working for a gym because my PT friends charge anywhere from 30-70 a session just depending on the package. And this is in AZ. My mom was paying 40/session at LA Fitness until she found out the trainer got $6 of that....$6!! So she quit because it wasnt fair to the trainer. Private training is the way to go for this guy

College education does not always mean higher pay. This needs to be stressed to young people.

This guy just told my whole life story, same age, same debt same degree BUT I have a master's w/that student debt. But my dad taught me well about working hard (was raised on a farm) so while I was in school I worked a night job, as soon as I was done with school I worked 3 jobs from 6am to 10pm eating nothing, driving a trash car, using the oldest phone in the world, no internet, no kids, no social life & I'm already debt free with more than 165k my bank account and even more in my retirement. So it is do able you just have to SACRIFICE your social life and having the newest things...oh and dont have kids

It's really sad no one told him he can be a trainer without this degree. This is where parents and experienced workers failed millennials. It was really shoved down our throats to attend college no matter what. Many walk away with a salary not worth what we paid to get the degree. I know so many New Yorkers with his same story. No guidance just attend school and get a degree. Sad. Those numbers are sad.
I agree. In high school, teachers and councilors all encouraged us to go because it was "good debt," and we'd earn more in the long run. It was really terrible advice because they didn't realize how much the world had changed from their time as young adults.

It happen to me too. 60k for an arts degree. I’m working on getting my income up but it’s hard. Things gonna turn around though, I’ve got many pots on the burner. It’s been a long journey. So tired.

This is so sad. I was a personal trainer, took a course, got certified and worked side by side with an experienced trainer to learn more about fitness and nutrition. The cost was less than $250 to get certified at the time. It took time to build up my clientele, but I made decent money and wasn't strapped with student loan debt. Good luck to this guy.

I went to college with people like this.
They took/maxed-out every student loan available to them along with every credit card to live big while going to school with the attitude of I'll pay in back when I get out and get a "good" job.
After they graduated, reality hits them in the face, they call people like Dave wanting sympathy or end up doing something illegal.
I don't blame the government for all the student loan dept -- I blame the people who took them out with no realistic idea of how to ever pay them off.
There should be a federal law the requires all college majors to print out a piece of paper that says 1) what the loan is, 2) what the payments are, 3) what the expected income is, and 4) an overview of the general risk they are taking (e.g. high, medium, low).

As someone who teaches in colleges and requires my students to do this exact assignment, it won't work bc they won't listen. I had a student tell me the other day she will make 90k as a preschool teacher when she graduates. I said stop looking at the top 1% of preschool teachers out in NYC somewhere and look what entry level locals make. She wouldn't listen to me at all. Just rolled her eyes like I knew nothing at all.
My heart is broken for this gentlemen. The "educators" are crooks! I am hoping his life improves.
Calls like these make me glad I actually RESEARCHED my future degree before committing myself to debt. As soon as this COVID thing passes I have a check ready to pay off my loans in full.

What’s sad is that he could’ve gone straight through ACE and earned a certificate for $1299. Then simply taken the exam. Probably would not have been more than $2K total.
He's got a long road ahead of him. Unless he wins the lottery, I doubt he'll ever be able to pay it off. $160k to be a personal trainer is a complete ripoff. Just go through a certification program.
What's really sad is that there're plenty of foolish 18 year olds about to make the same mistake.
He can pay it off if he increases his income. Even if he just doubles it to $60k/yr and lives on $30k, that's $30k/yr toward debt. Eight years. A long time, but not impossible.

With being able to learn so much here on TH-cam and other places on the web, getting a degree🎓 that will have a return on investment is more important than ever! If you can learn the same skills and make the same amount without the degree you're wasting your money! 💸

Don't blame the school, or government loan agency...blame the one who took out the loan and now doesn't have the means to pay it back.
The degree is only a tool (many people with those degrees are making 6-figures (working for professional athletes, colleges/pro-teams, etc) and not a guarantee of anything.
He signed up for the money -- he took the money -- he should stop crying about paying it back.

The issue is that employers want that piece of paper. You can teach yourself coding and be excellent at it, but if you don't have piece of paper, your application will go directly to the trash.

My uncle was a head personal trainer at the bliss gym in W hotel NYC, he would work from 6 am to 11 am and be done for the day. Charge 200 an hour and he would make over 100k a year. Not an easy route but wanted to share. Good luck !

When I was younger, I opened a private studio and made $100K NET. My good friend made even more! It can be done but it takes a lot of hard work.
He can start his own class, design different customized work out routines, put it all on a TH-cam channel and still give private sessions to NY millionaires... He can make it unless training is not his thing. Good luck to him

Thought about that too. The degree is not worth it. No guidance is needed. Here’s the blueprint. 1) Read the NASM BOOK 2) Read books on sales 3)Walk in to the busiest gym and demand an interview 4)build your clients 5)take those clients and train them on the side 6) repeat 4 & 5.
Maybe he can start a youtube/twitch channel? There are a lot of people working from home who cannot go to the gym because of the shelter at-home orders. He could provide a service there.

Bec they picked a career thats not in demand.. they picked a career bec they like it.
This video definitely hit home. I made a dumb move getting a MSW to enter the Social Work field.
The pay was less than 40K, workload...heavy, workplace...toxic, and opportunities limited in settings which paid higher wages.
Lesson to young adults:
Please do NOT go into the Social Work field and AVOID student loan debt.
Select an inexpensive degree which will teach you a skill (Health care, Education, and etc.) Or Trade School (Automotive Repair, Cosmetology, Carpentry, Dental Hygienist).
You can open your own business or do contract work on the side if you have a skill and will NOT have student loan debt.
I got my MSW, became licensed and make over 50k! I am almost debt free as well. I know the work load can be heavy in some agencies but there are good areas. I previously worked making over 60k out of grad school in Louisiana.

@@PokeZamJam Congratulations on almost being debt free. I worked as a Social Worker in Chicago. The only ones I know who made over $50k, were the LCSW'S, Social Workers who were supervisors, or the ones who were lucky enough to get hired by the state.

A friend of mine in the fitness world with not much background on social media was able to use the spare time during the lockdown to find moms at home that need help working out so she started doing sessions on zoom and was able to make an extra $1500 since the first of the month
all it took was her making some calls and asking people and doing a free class online to get the people to see if it’s for them

A lot resonated with me in this call. I got my Bachelors in Social Work and have almost a decade of experience. Now I have my Master's in counseling and haven't been able to get back into the counseling field yet. But I'm only making around 30,000 even though I have all this experience. It's very frustrating.

You can go for Physical Therapy which requires 6 figure investment and a Doctoral.
I’m an exercise physiologist currently, don’t make much, but in a program now to become a cardiac medical device specialist.

Lot of famous fitness TH-camrs making money, have their own fitness apparel clothing and supplements for sale and without degrees.
You can't just "go' to physical therapy school. The acceptance rate is only around 10%. You better hope you have an outstanding gpa.

I have the same degree and there are many different career paths from being a personal trainer. I would recommend either health consulting or medical device sales.
i think there should be more pressure on colleges and university to help students find jobs once finished , the community college in my city has a bar on campus , doesnt it make more sense to maybe use that space for some kind of a place agency to help students finds once finished and during school
I think it's time for people to wake up and do your own research about the career you want to go to. Now days with all the info you need you can find for free online, and ask questions a lot of questions before you take out the loan.

This is the problem with the education system and needs to end. No more charging 100k for a degree to get a job that pays $14/hr. The cost of the degree should be proportionate with what the average pay is for the particular field of work

Personally I think my man took student loans on 10 different majors in college before he decided to be a trainer because it doesn’t add up or make sense I have a friend of mine who is a trainer you can get certified to be a trainer in less than a year all you need is a CPR certification and a couple of course in a community college that would cost you 6K tops and then take the exam that they require, he’s not being fully honest, Law school graduates finish school with an average student loan debt of 150000
First step of thinking about going to college is do research and that doesn't mean go to the school website and see what they say how much that career makes.

I’m in nursing school and my parents still insisted that I go to community college so I’m not in so much debt when I graduate. Thank god I listened to them. I’ll be making around $70,000 with only $20,000 on debt

I went through undergrad and an mba on loans and didn't get anywhere near 163K. Good grief. 29k is not a salary, that's a part time job. This poor guy needs to find a new career.
Most people that I know that have that degree went to physical therapy school. I went to physical therapist assistant school and paid out of pocket, lots of my classmates got loans. That’s just crazy !!
Makes no sense that these colleges charge 60000 to over 100000 for degrees in careers that only pay 25000 to 35000 a year.

Principle. Right now may be a great time to refinance student loans or even call your servicer and make sure the CARES act was implemented for federal student loans or call and discuss option on private loans! Get them out of the way!! That’s a true investment in the long run!

I think there should be a freshman level course on personal finance. It should require you to run the numbers on what you can expect to make as a return on investment on your fees. That is what an education should be: an investment.

In my opinions, our caller was ripped off to become a personal trainer. It cost too much for him. Second, his income is way to low, personal trainer can make easy money in addition to their part-time job. He should be making 60k and above. I hope he finds a way out.
I got an exercise science degree from Utah State and it cost me $20,000(paid cash). Thank goodness because the most I made was $15 an hour. Personal trainers don’t need a degree (just certifications) and other higher paying careers for ES degrees require more education. Research your field of study and costs of education before you start! And most personal trainers do only make around $15 an hour unless you’re the very few living in LA or New York AND have that exclusive clientele niche.
I had a department head in college recommend that I switch from teaching to exercise science. I am soooooo happy that I never did that. I’m a teacher and live a comfortable life. I hope this guy finds a way!!! Colleges and high schools need to change.

When my husband worked as an athletic trainer, he would work mornings at the Smoothie King in the airport (4am-), then work about 12-9 or 1-10 at the college he trained for, then would work Friday night high school football games for an area out here. He worked extra to make up for the lack in pay (he made upper $30s as a trainer at that time). He also worked weekends with the Motor Assist Patrol on the interstate. He is no longer working in the industry bc he has been able to make 6 figures in sales, but he did find ways to bring up his income at the time even if it wasn’t in training.
Maybe he's a lousy trainer despite his degree. He sounds a bit scratchy. I wonder if a bit of training in speech to add some polish and finesse might make him a bit more marketable. Just listening to him here I'm ready to give him my wallet and put my hands up.

He can try to look for a job as an exercise physiologist at a cardiac rehab facility. Most hospitals have them and he will just be checking blood pressure's all day. He'll get at least 20 dollars an hour doing this. My sister did this and she has a exercise science bachelors degree. Although it didnt cost her that much money.

Looking at national average is useless because it factors in the different costs of living throughout the US. He lives in an area where the COL is really low so his wages will be too.
Military officer. Go for it. You’re already in shape. They have huge educational incentives including loan repayments up to $50k plus income stability, nice salaries and increases, and a good pension. Go in at 35 and retire at 55.
