  • The BMW i5 is finally here and to learn more about its design, we interviewed Christopher Weil, Head of BMW Exterior Design. In this video, the top designer goes over the styling choices of the electric 5 Series.
We asked Weil about the front-end choices, including the different kidney grilles on the i5 M60 and i5 eDrive40, the integration of the radar in the grille, the headlights and much more.
We also explore the interior design of the BMW i5 and we asked about the lack of physical buttons. There are a lot more design details we explored, so make sure to tune in!

I love & appreciate it when vehicles are explained by designers & engineers unlike just reviewed mostly "unknowledgeable" motoring journalists who just express their's/people's views which I don't usually follow & find boring.thanks Horatiu

This is really nice feedback. I appreciate it. I feel the same way: the designers and engineers are the best at explaining their work. I enjoy these interviews too because I also learn a lot which makes my job easier. For example, what I learned in this new i5 review (even though I did another one before) that the flat bottom steering wheel is also a functional piece. Meaning, it helps with knee room and getting in and out of the car.

I enjoyed this interview and love the new design. I'm an early adopter, so the new design language was well received by me early on. I enjoyed the conversation about new design, heritage, competition, and intention. I love my M550i and this is just buidling on that. I like the new touches, design, and the performance we can expect. Im ordering ASAP and will keep my M550i.
Not everyone will like it and I have a feeling BMW will be fine with that. They will sell. Thanks Horatiu.

This new design is absolutely awesome. It looks so strong and aggressive. Definitely turns heads and truly doesn’t go unnoticed. With absolute certainty, stands out compared to other vehicles in its range. A total W for the brand with this one.

They did a great job with the exterior design on this one, it for sure stands out if you see it in traffic. Looks futuristic especially at night time.

I love the videos, but the recent design direction BMW is moving leaves me cold. I took delivery of my G31 530d xDrive touring and my wife’s 118i earlier this year because we didn’t like the way BMW was moving - big, curved screen and no buttons/knobs for the everyday functions. We will not buy another BMW while the current design philosophy continues. Give me a G30/31 every time over the new 5.

I agree that the new designs are not for everyone, and there is nothing wrong with the G30

Great Review, however The next time you have the opportunity, please explore untouched subjects about the car like the sound quality. HK vs BW. Do the Speakers illuminate like the i7.. The lighting accents under the gear shifter, are there any, like the i7 as well. Wind noise on Panoramic Roof vs standard. Etc
Thank you for your hard work.

honestly horatiu this is a really underreported aspect on cars!! those things like sound quality, seat quality, seat positioning comfort are usually just described in a vacuum without comparing to other cars, if bmwblog could have a tech/ rating car comparison section i feel like that would be cool
also, if you get the chance could you ask the designers why there are no nice quality leather seatbacks on the new 5? it looks cheap the way it is with plastic rears. and also why the lower speaker on the front door panel is ugly / plain even in the B&W spec?
im a little disappointed that they didnt add more specialness to the 5 interior although it does look good!! (im thinking of things like the alcantara dashboard thats available on the new 2, and the way the sunroof doesnt have any dimming tech or ambient lighting like the iX or 7

Let me shed some light on how things work. At events like this, you have limited time, limited cars. You focus mostly on driving. Then later one, you get a car for a week review or longer where you can focus on all the details. But you need to also find a car to compare things like sound. Let alone getting other brands to give you cars to compare, which is always tough. The questions you have for designers, they won't answer them when you ask them like that. How should they answer the question on the frond door panel speaker?

    • @lahren6337
      @lahren6337 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bmwblog
You're absolutely right about the limitations of those kinds of events, and thank you for running bmwblog very well and being active I enjoy the updates very much.
As for the questions, you're absolutely right. It's hard to ask questions like that.
But I feel like it's still important.
I mean, there can be a way to ask them and it's still important to ask them because just for example, I think I'm pretty sure this is the i5 M60, right?
And I haven't seen it with an Alcantara roofline and it's over 70,000 and it's the top of the line electric model and it doesn't have an Alcantara roof.
      Why?
      That seems odd.
The seat backs being plastic, no seat pocket, makes it look like an economy car.
It makes it look very cheap.
And then I think I saw another comment here about, and I didn't even know this, they removed ambient lighting from the rear seat. Why would they do that?
And then the Bowers and Wilkins system.
Yeah, it looks good on the top side of the front door panels.
But then there's that whole lower area where it looks like a base model sound system. There's nothing. It doesn't look special. It doesn't look like anything.
And those are all things that were different on the old 5 Series.
Remember the Bowers and Wilkins on the old 5?
It had beautiful speaker covers up above and then also beautiful below.
And the old 5 Series had beautiful ambient lighting in the rear and beautiful leather on the panel in the rear and beautiful Alcantara.
So it's just that we should hold these brands to account because they're making a new product. It shouldn't be worse than the last - and I specifically mean in materials not in design.
Maybe a way to ask these types of questions, and I think maybe this is their strategy, which is to make the M5 more special, that they're saving a lot of things for the M5.
And so maybe a way to ask these types of questions are, oh, is the M5 going to be more special on the interior?
      Will it have XYZ?
I just want to make it clear I'm not trying to attack you or the designers or anything.
I just feel like there are little things that have been overlooked and it's always good to point them out.
For example, the roof feature that I was talking about, the shading, like on the iX, like on the new Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo, that feature was in the iX when it came out and the iX has been out for four years now and they launch a 5 Series, which should be in the relative range of what an iX is, and the 5 Series comes out years later and it doesn't have that technology in the roof.
And the roof doesn't have any sort of ambient lighting, which was in the old 7.
So there's things that are just being overlooked for no reason it seems, unless what they're trying to do is make the new M5 the most special, which I'm assuming that's what they're trying to do, but still, we have to make sure that they know that we can see what they're missing, you know what I mean?

It grows on me. At first, didn't really liked the design, it looked too squishy from the sides. Now, starting to understand the new BMW language and what the designers doing. They don't want to make boring cars with the same "popular and trendy" features as anyone does. They try something new and their way. Which is why I started to like it.
By the way, the touring looks even better. Fixes some of the proportions for the car and looks way better. It will be a looker. Not even talking about the M5 touring.

The new G60 isn't ugly per say, but it certainly isn't as attractive or as traditional BMW looking as the G30 or past BMW's well known for their beauty. The tail lights on the sides are pointing down instead of up, which throws off the side tail light design look. The C-pillar with that extra trim with a "5" on it makes the side profile awkward. The side line running above the door handles instead of through them, makes the side profile look too slab sided. A large group of fellow friends whom have all now seen pictures of the G60 express the same concerns. Being on my second G30 which I love due to the design, this new 5 certainly doesn't inspire me to trade up, instead makes me want to hold on to my G30 as long as possible. BMW's should stir your soul when you look at them, the G60 looks Meh, and that shouldn't happen.
