Tbh, last generation of both the cars looked much better.
I think too. Pretty much one of the nicest generation for both cars.
@@leventejuhasz3492 Absolutely 💯
For the Benz, I still consider the 'W124' the nicest looking of the E Class iteration.
@@oluseyigearhead4466 Great choice.
Which one would you prefer, the 500E or the E60 AMG?
@@oluseyigearhead4466agreed.
E class looks elegent and very soft i'd go for it any day
Looks feminine tbh bmw better
I'll buy the E class in a heartbeat . I just wish that the 5 series looked like the scatch version.
A splash of paint or wrap for the lower section + wheels and springs and you're good to go!
@@Bembli thanks for all your videos ‼️
Best regards 👍
@@Bemblinah man this ain't it whatever tuning you do. Only rices it up
Can i ask you, how long u will drive this 100k car ? 10years ? Or ..?
G30 every day but this pille of cheap plastic
If you stuck a Toyota emblem on the back of the BMW, people would think it was the new Camry.
This statement is very accurate
Or a Subaru. Agree
Or Toyota Altis
Don't insult the new Camry like that.
I thought so too when I first saw it
So we have an expensive Skoda Octavia and a meh Merc. Sad times
I don’t understand the reception of the merc. First time I saw it, I was glad merc is going back to an old school robust design. It’s like 80s /90s mercedes brought to presend day. Disappointed noone else sees what I see, design wise
@@carlosandleon Tbh I have the same meh feeling for the 2020-2022 design aswell. The 2018 design is just the best looking for me. It has the perfect amount of agression and elgance. Ever since they introduced the EQ lineup, Mercedes started making their cars a bit too bubbly for my taste. (The worst example I can think of is the rear end of the GLS SUV)
At least they still make nice interiors.
I think the exact same as you do actually@@carlosandleon
In my opinion, the E-class looks better than the 5 Series. Not so sure about those tail lights on the Merc and the DTLs on the beamer 🤷
I do not like those tail lights either .
I would go for the e class in black, just to hide the black glasses
Same and with the classy grill. Unfortunately you can’t change the rear lights. Other than that, beautiful! I hope a Facelift comes out with proper rear lights. Other than that, I really don’t dislike it but Mercedes e class w213 from 2019 (before the facelift) is an absolute w.
There’s something about the 5 series design i really don’t like, i think it looks like a hump somehow
It looks like a front wheel drive mainstream sedan. Looks like a bigger 2 series grand coupe which is why the proportions seem a bit off
Yeah the bonnet/hood is raised quite a bit. Therefore the back bootlid is angled more to keep it inline with the hood. And I'm not sure if this is why rear end feels too short in length..or maybe it actually is.
The silhouette is a bit off...probs bec of the EV batteries
I completely agree. The rear slope makes it look less sleek when compared to the last generation 🥲. It reminds me of a used bar of soap (specifically Dove Men+Care soap bar, lmao). Something just looks odd.
@@ertugrulbae46 i fully agree, i thought i was the only one seeing this. The old model was kind of a muscle car, now it looks like a 2 series
@@cosmyfication looks like that 2 series GT or whatever it was called. Thr fat blobby looking one with 4 doors.
In terms of proportions the Mercedes looks much more refined and aesthetically pleasing with its short overhangs. The BMW has become just too long without offering more interior space than the Mercedes.
The BMW's shape looks awkward because of the large overhangs in front. Interior wise I prefer the BMW, the huge glass surfaces on the Mercedes's dashbord are a bit too much for me.
I would have a problem with both. I hate the trend to multible screens, its simply to clean, using a touch screen to regulate the ventilation.. wtf.. happy with my F32.
Haha, or just be me and drive an e39 😅...that's currently in the shop 😭
@@nikolasbergeron9942e39 is my one of the all time dream cars. It reminds me of a leopard.
I like this new structure you have for your two channels. One channel kinda does an in person car review and analysis of the car’s design while you see it in person and this channel sticks to your roots in comparing and talking about car designs/design philosophies. You’re doing great SketchMonkey :)
The E is better. The BMW doesn’t look expensive. The rear, with the exception of the black bumper trim corner pieces looks like the current Camry.
😅
Definitely E Series. It looks even better than the last series and actually it looks good. BMW 5 is terrible in every aspect. Looks like KIA
Just don’t understand what BMW is doing? The previous gen 5 series was gorgeous. The headlights and front end on this new one looked hideous
The Mercedes still looks classy while the BMW looks confused and desiged by a 3rd grader. It looks like a front wheel drive multiple different car brands weird mashup.
E-class looks lovely.
Eclass i feel, definitely heading more in the direction of where seeming luxury brands are going for the look
The rear is a bit strong though storm trooper looking; your light line concept in the light did look proper though!
E class will look much better with different exhaust tips and the grille. Look forward to the new E53 amg version.
As an owner of G30 5 series i just cant get over the weird thin extended C pillar, and no proper side creases. Ill take the Merc E if i really have to choose one.
The C pillar completely ruined that car. Lots of angular lines that don't mesh together in a graceful way. Reminds me of the W212 E-Class's design language, but much worse...
@@shawna7813 Agree. By the way E39 and F10 are still my very favourite 5 series, good proportions, strong looking stance.
yes, my words! i am also g30 owner and i was really dissapointed, that the 5 series has no dignified successor. no chance, bmw managers can drive themselve
If you put the Japanese and Korean brands on the 5 series you'd think the is a Toyota or KIA. However, the E-Class looks the part and can't confuse it something else. Merc gets the win for me!
Mercedes is the all rounder better looking. Interior and exterior wise. The new BMW's 5 series is way too stiff and looks more like a design from Volkswagen than a design from BMW. The only thing that I don't like are those backlight led design from Mercedes. But probably will be updated with facelifts. Merc for the win.
Ur stupid for saying 5 is stiff😂. Tell me you never been in both
I think mercedes over did the screens. Gonna have to give the interior to bmw. It's still full of tech, but it's styled more like a modern car.
@@ii_dynasty interiors are both nice and the screens I find it easy to use on both, styling I prefer 5 series. Exterior they both lost to upcoming audi a6. Buuut electric bmw still drives like a bmw and it’s soo good
MERCEDES E- CLASS IS THE BEST!👑
I’ve been saying this forever….the trend of putting black trim on the front/rear bumpers & side skirts NEEDS to die. Looks so cheap 😭…
the problem with using only one chassis for both EV and ICE is that the proportions of the design will be off. Look at how "thick" the 5er actually is, without the blacked out side sills, it would look very slab sided with a high belt line
Yes, that's why it looks so odd. Any why is the front grill so upright? It doesn't look very aerodynamic. I guess it's to make it look aggressive. The Chinese like giant prominent grills on their cars. Audi's sold very well there I noticed when I was in China about 15 years ago, so I guess BMW and Merc. have had to catch up. Shame for the rest of us.
@@mrsteve7175 it's upright b/c of pedestrian regulations duh
This version of the eclass is spot on, balance ICE vs EV looks nicely.
Mercedes hits different
They definitely rattle from quality issues .
Only the interior
In terms of design, the E class is way more well built and not a confused work by the BMWs. The flow, the lines of the E class is absolute art 🔥
I doubt it's better built, there was no comparison on build quality between the 2, the BMW has been and will be better in every way. Between my father and my brother we have and until recently still had the last versions of both, out of our 2 BMWs and 1 Mercedes, it was the Mercedes that had to go, it wasn't well liked.
@@onkouth Hi built quality engineer, this post and channel is about “design”. If you are saying the new M5 is better designed than this. You should be playing with your toys at home rather than watching and understanding these videos. Lol
@@onkouthlast Gen BMW was better build BUT this new gen have you noticed the 5 series isn‘t getting a leather stitched steering wheel anymore unlike the last gen or current gen 7-series and even 3-series ? Also it has piano black as arm wrests like wtf was BMW thinking.
The E-class doesn’t have leather stitched steering wheel for ages but it seems like BMW went a level down with interior quality, seems they are both equal now and both overpriced.
As a guitar player, Mercedes is a Gibson. BMW is an Epiphone.
As a BMW driver… The Benz looks better on the outside. I do like the BMW interior more though
I really dislike the way that 5 series looks.
It looks too heavy for me particularly in the are above the front wheels - there's so much car above it and also from the rear 3/4 again, way too heavy.
E class for the win
E class looks better in my opinion as designer. Even with flaws. BMW had potential but this looks generic. I would definitely buy Merc.
I’m kinda on board with the E class design! While it looks EQ, they made the headlights and grill look more stately and less angry eyed. The bmw is angry and childish looking, the front graphics are actually hideous.
The 5 series looks like a toy with all of the black cladding and aggressive graphics. E class is the easy choice for me
The back of bmw looks like genesis
i5 is the worst 5 series ever made design wise
100%
7 series is worse. So is the 4 series.
@@ertugrulbae46no 5 series overstyling is worse to the point it looks like a 2 GranCoupe and 2 series coupe had a baby, 7 series looks like a RWD sedan unlike the 5 series which looks like a FWD car, S class w223 is the ugliest in the s class design history due to how simple and bland it is
And it still looks better then the mercedes by a wide margin..the merc looks like an old man or feminine car
Both of these icons are past their prime. I'd rather Uber than pay the price to own either.
You are past your prime, but I'd still take you as an uber driver
@@MrVinceMunro😂👍
BMW as well for me but like you mentioned, neither of them pull my heart strings. I understand you're focused on the US market but I'd love for you to review other European brands as well. You have so many from the Stellantis group and then there's a new Chinese brand every other week. There are so many to choose from and it 'd be great to get your perspective on all these new releases.
Mercedes if course. That BMW looks like Peugeot 504. BMW has generally never set a foot wrong with the 5 (yes, even the Chris Bangle, which wasn't by Chris Bangle) but thee's a first time for everything I guess. First trash 5 series. Love that new E-Class
I'll buy the 5 series hands down on exterior design alone, the bulbous look of the E class is a bit too feminine for me. The 5 series also have a more driver focused interior than the E class.
I'd probably go BMW as well and lower it a bit with different wheels, maybe make the black areas, body color as well.
E class is worth 10k more just from looking at it
Not a single word concerning the (too) long front overhang on the 5 series?!
Also no comment about the increased height of the 5 series because of the space for the bateries in i (EV) versions.
the 5 looks like a fwd car, the merc looks like a proper sporty sedan
As a car guy since I was two years old, it's so sad to see driving machines (even "ultimate" driving machines) morphing into smartphones. From a design standpoint, the BMW isn't as bad as it could have been. I do think the headlights' shape and angle makes them looks a bit Asian. Really wish they would stop with the lighted grille thing. It's garish and horrible.
Comparing a car to an ethnicity and saying it doesn’t look good….. hmmm
@@Chansupa Um, I was definitely referring to Asian cars, not Asian humans. There are absolutely differences in automotive design language across geographies. My only point was that this design is decidedly un-German.
dude i have 540i and its lease is coming to end this Dec. I'm super confused which one to buy whether the merc or beamer ? both looks awesome
Same issue here 😮
The E class hands down is the most attractive of the two. It pains me to say that because I'm a bmw fan. I had a 2000 5 series E39 with the sports package and it was stunning! Now this car looks like a Honda Accord or Camry. Just cover the kidney grill and tell me what you think. The E class on the other hand looks way better than the outgoing model. This new E class looks more like a S class and the old E class looked more like a C class. Bimmer get it together. One great looking vehicle (X7) in your line up? Smh
Same here. I have the latest 330i and it's awesome. The New BMW design looks like it was being made for Asia or Russian market with its crystal elements. Wrong direction. Mercedes this time presented a classy design.
😀
I bought the BMW i5 M60. It looks sportier and the customizable light bar is great as you have settings for intensity as well as many colors and moods.
I`m on the fence. I think the I5 M 60 is a lot of bang for the money. Almost M5 power for the price of a well equipped 540. But I also think the new 760 is a total gangster car (if done right). Can`t make up my mind. And then there`s the new M5 wagon. Jesus, choices, choices.
Nobody talking about how handsome the Audi A6 is, I'd take it in a heartbeat
because it has been out for a much longer period by now and in regards to tech it is far behind on these 2 (which imo is a + because its a car, not a self driving computer)
E Class all day
I’ve owned an E class in the past and own a 5 series now. Both are great cars. I like the BMW exterior a little better here, but also agree with your specific comments about potential improvements. I think the Mercedes exterior is too soft for me. Also, I can’t stand the black plastic outline around the front grill. Finally, the rear exhaust is completely fake! That’s awful. On the interior, I find that Mercedes is using more and more cheap plastic while the materials in the BMW are getting better and better. Next year, I will be in the market to buy one of these cars. I’m leaning toward the BMW, but need to drive and see them up close.
The 5 could (and should) be the easy choice between these two. The fact that it isn't just goes to show how BMW's designers are going through a severe crisis of brand identity and values.
I'm gonna stick with the facelift w212
Ngl, this is the best looking E class(my opinion)
Looks like classic Merc from outside for me. But the interioria too old school for me. W213 pre-facelift is the best looking inside and outside IMO.
@@SWENWAR Well, I have to say I'm an old school guy tho
If you ask me, if I want an AMG Hammer or a SLS. I'd rather have the Hammer
I'd pick the Mercedes, even with the weird tail-lights. To me, if you have to add a fake plastic window extension on the C pillar, you have failed as a designer. Especially on a BMW, where it's the iconic Hoffmeister kink.
I am a BMW fan, honestly, but I think the new one looks kind of weird. Not terrible, but also not as good as its predecessor.
Only considering the design I'd go with the E-Class, but I assume the interior quality of the BMW is probably better, so in the real world I'd go with the 5-Series.
I'll order my next company car in late 2023 and i'm thinking about switching to Mercedes, currently driving a G31 5 series. I really think they've ruined the new one. ://
I just bought my ‘23 G31 540i LCI, hope you liked it. I agree with what you are saying.
Compared these 2 models for weeks and decided to go with the 5 series... i opted for the I6 version. After sitting in both cars, the BMW's interior surpasses the E class. Exterior wise, the E class is a little "prettier " but you get more in the BMW for about 10k less. I've had 2 Jaguars, 1 Infiniti, 2 A7's and the 5 series is my favorite by far (Audi comes in at a very close 2nd)
E, no brainer
Why would you compare the bmw e version to the merc combustion? The bmw non ev styling is different
I am looking forward to the new 2024 E53 amg. It will look better with the amg grille and the quad pipes. Also looking forward to the horsepower and torque of the new 2024 E53 amg.
Just saw the new E class LIVE and sat in it,looked around... also seen the 5 series. These two are my favorite brands. But between these models I would choose the E class all day ,everyday. Looks amazing, feels fantastic. You just want one:)
Mini S class. Can't wait until the AMG comes along.
5 series looks a bit strange and confused. Not in a Bangle sort of way but still.
Like the front though. But really no match for the E class especially with the AMG package.
the 5 series looks like a modern car with reduced polygon counts , this is just BMW gone completely wrong . . . the last 5 series looks way way way ahead of this , mercedes in the other hand looks way better than the last one but that black grill thing made it kinda look like a racoon 🤣 and the fake rear muffler YIKES , but still love the overall design
I agree with you regarding the 5 series front end black plastics; it looks like LEGO. BMW added the black side skids so the car does not look too high due to the I5 batteries.
Also, 5 series loses exhaust tips so the ICE looks exactly like EV.
E Class easily. The 5 looks like they were designing a crossover and got the message hours before the reveal that they were supposed to design a sedan instead.
😭😭😭😂😭😭
Outgoing gen of both looks way better....even the older older bmw f10 looks better...BUT I THINK THE NEW E CLASS LOOKS BETTER THAN THE BMW...
Exactly.
Please make a redesign of the front and back of the e-class !!!
MB no doubt if I can afford one
If u ask me, bmw lost there design langauge 2-3years ago. Not that its bad, but none of them have like the same theme. Look at the grills, all diffrent. Also interiors, 3y ago was peak!
Agree. The F and G series were top notch.
I’ll pick the BMW. I’ve driven the Mercedes, but the driving characteristics of the bmw are just tighter, and with a simple switch, you can get the soft riding dampers activated.
It’s true, some elements like the glass in the bmw aren’t what I would like, and some elements in the Mercedes are better looking. So, it’s kind of a trade of between the two
Bmw seems to be taking some design ideas from lexus, as this 5 series' overall shapes and proportions remind me of previous generation lexus IS
keen eye, I thought I was the only one that noticed this. I currently own a 17 IS200t and I kinda feel the same. I know everyone says the E class looks neater and I don't disagree, but I still somehow prefer the 5 as all around package. It seems like the perfect upgrade to my IS: just a couple hundred pounds heavier, much roomier, faster, handles and brakes better, decent AWD system (compared to Lexus), more fuel efficient, just maybe less reliable. And the design has some aggression to it, maybe not as much as the IS, but still decent.
That bmw looks like a Honda accord from the rear 3 quarter view
E class 100%
Id get the E class
I've just recently bought the W214... the car is gorgeous
The E class looks a lot more classy. The 5 series looks a bit like a toy imo
If I had to I’d get the 5 series and I typed it as soon as I heard to do so in video. Now let’s see what you chose. I really dislike what Benz did to the head and tall lamps
Performance wise, BMW. Design wise Merc for sure. I like performance most so... BMW is the way to fo (for me)
I would not choose either, I don't have need for 4 doors or more than 2 seats.
I'm not a fan of the mustache on the BMW though.
The BWM looks a bit similar to a Volvo s60
I would buy the 5 series all the way. Although the E estate looks really good.
I will go with e class,, Mercedes has improved alot from interior and design is very nice and beautiful❤
I've been driving a 530e for many years now. Drove the initial model (current gen), now I drive the facelift version and well ... I'd still 'upgrade' to the i5 in 5 years when my current 530e's time is up (if the budget still allows for it that is, EV's are expensive).
Anyway, here we're forced into going for the EV's and no tnx to Merc EQ's. This comparison only works for the ICE versions after all since Merc makes something else entirely for their EV lineup of the C/E/S/etc. class.
Anyway, in the looks department it wouldn't feel like an upgrade though since I quite prefer my current model's looks over the new one.
On the other hand, by the time I'll be in the market for a new one, there'll be a facelifted i5 already. So who knows.
Last point I would make however is that I'm glad they didn't mess it up completely. BMW's been making a habit of going completely off the rails lately.
Just look at the iX or even the i4.
The 5 series for me. Love the subtle surface lines
I hated all previous e class models they were for old-timers.This is fresh.
W213 pre-facelifted looks modern and classy at the same time.
Personally styling wise, the BMW almost looks FWD. And that’s why I would choose the Benz.
Amazing that someone who purports to have design sense can be so off, at least from the perspective of the viewers. Viewers clearly prefer the elegant sophistication of the new E-class when compared to the transformer, black-clad crossover look of the 5 series.
Is it me or does the new 5’s rear end sorta look like the last gen Honda Prelude?!
8 weeks ago I would have said Merc. The more I looked at the 5, the better I liked it. And I saw one in the flesh a few days ago. Carbon black with M Sport, the 21`s and smoke white interior. Wow, just wow. It`s an imposing car.
Mercedes E class for the win.❤
For traditional luxury, it's E. For modern luxury, it's 5. They appeal to different buyers in the same price bracket.
check the new CT6 plz, though it's not for NA
BMW looks like it’s trying to be a Genesis in the back
I love BMW but my family has a lot of history with Mercedes. Both my grandfather and my father's brother worked for Mercedes until retirement. They insistws on only ever driving Mercedes so, like I said, lots of history with Mercedes in my family. I however branched out and tried lots of different things including a bunch of Mercedes models. I would say for driving pleasure I'd take the BMW. My first car was a 1989 525i and I bought that in 2006. That was kind of my introduction to BMW. Loved the way that drove. It was a manual. And even though it was an old car at that point, and there are better examples of what people might consider a dynamic BMW sports car, it was a taste of just how good BMW are when it comes to engineering a car that is just great to drive. Felt like an extension of myself. By comparison a 2005 911 Porsche that I tried (one of my friends had one) was confusing to me. Not as intuitive to drive in the corners.
Fast forward to today though I would be tempted to take the new E class. Mostly because they offer a plugin hybrid and that kind of design fits our driving patterns and use case almost perfectly. Drive on electric power most of the year (day to day driving to work basically) and when we go on road trips we're set. The other reason is just the way things work where I live. It's mostly stop/go kind of traffic and highway traffic. The E class can drive itself pretty much in those kinds of situations. That's a big help and reduces fatigue on road trips. I doubt that I'd be able to utilize what makes BMW special given those circumstances. I'd take the big screen and all the ambient lights and stuff. Not needed strictly but whatever. If you're spending that much money just go all the way. Things like the acoustic package with infrared-reflecting glass is also a big selling feature for me. I like being completely isolated from traffic and noise if possible and I am willing to bet Mercedes would be better in this area than BMW. Same with leg room and general comfort. I am pretty tall and have found BMW are always a little bit less worse for tall people than Mercedes.
The E-class looks better, more elegant, upscale and refined than the 5-series. BMW has changed their design language recently, more minimalistic/bland, which has worked in some cases but not in this case. What bothers me most is the fake trim where the Hofmeister kink used to be. The simple Hofmeister kink is basically gone in recent BMWs. Regarding Mercedes and the E-class designs, I think Mercedes has been 'struggling' to get a unique but good-looking design over the past 10 years. This evolution of the E-class is far better than the prior two designs, but it's struggling to be unique enough to stand out, IMHO.
The fact that they made the new 5 series look like ab3 series gt (which I don't like) breaks my heart
2023 BMW m340 owner here. Looking to upgrade to the 540 but the design is ugly and incongruent. Seriously considering the E450
Definitely a Merc EQE with Hyperscreen 😎
I would choose e class design wise but subjectively, the M5 will have the better engine over the E63
I think it was a mistake for bmw to use their normal line up for electric because it made their cars look tall and blotted. But it make financial sense for them. As for the Mercedes, I hate the C pillars and the slopped trunk without forgetting the mustache around the grill.
I owned two m550i and loved every moment in those vehicles…not only am I not impressed but flat out disappointed in this new 5-series. I would rather buy the MB sight unseen than the new BMW.
E class. I am bmw owner (including e38 and e31), but with this design I guess my current pre lci g05 will be the last one.
X5 is great looking SUV, lci messed with it a bit, but still ok compared to what BMW is putting out lately. Looks like ima be getting pre-owned low miles one 😅
