Anecdotally, something that may or may not factor into bringing a titan to the tabletop, you tend to get a psychological effect. I have a midsize game group of friends with a fairly wide variety of armies available, and while we tend to play more casually, its always interesting to see what happens when you bring out a big model. my wife's harridan is quite often a game changer, with it being able to drop a full squad of gargoyles with a winged prime leading for oc/secondaries, and then being able to drop an average of 18 s10 -3ap 3dam shots (the harridans cannons are 2x, not twin linked) on a big terminator block from halfway across the board is pretty goddamn terrifying.

One of the best things about the Gargantuan Squiggoth is that you cam use 'Ard as Nails for 1CP, giving it -1 to wound. When you're T13 with -1 to wound, who needs an invulnerable save. Does feel like youre under selling it a bit as it has been used in tournaments unlike most of these models.
Also, dont fill it with boyz. Fill it with Nobz and Flash Gitz.

Exactly! I have witnessed, giddily, whole clusters of Dark Lances pattering off it to no effect. Doesn’t matter if your save is bad if you never have to roll it!
Gretchin aren’t bad to put in there either. They’re soft, but also cheap, so you don’t commit many points beyond the base and can run them out in the midfield to squat on an objective and farm CP while your monster decimates the enemy Battleline. Absolute all-star in 10th!

I am undefeated in 10th, and the only times I've come close to a draw or loss was against Necrons. This is just local level, but still. We have a lot of veteran players here and I've been comfortable this edition. • @sadlyanuxtakustan8950
    @sadlyanuxtakustan8950 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

For the gargantuan squiggoth you are able to use the 'ard as nails -1 to wound stratagem on it putting lascannons to wounding on a 6 and this also affects weapons with the anti-monster keyword.

    • @joshuabbates4096
      @joshuabbates4096 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Unfortunately -1 to wound does not affect the “anti” key word. Anti- monster and others go off of unmodified dice rolls so it doesn’t matter if you are subtracting 1 from a roll, an anti-monster 2 will still wound on a 2.

I have played all the Nid super bugs in tenth, and the Hierophant has impressed me a great deal. It scares the daylights out of the enemy, and usually draws all their fire in the first turn. With 5+ FNP in Invasion Fleet, it is more than capable of tanking the fire of a whole army. It pairs super well with the Neurotyrant as well, preying on battle shocked units.
The Gargantuan Squiggoth has also been an all-star this edition. T13, 3+ save isn’t the best, but 440 is the same cost as a Knight Atrapos, and its melee is WICKED. Beyond that, ‘Ard As Nails stratagem is utterly disgusting with it. Dark Lances? Lascannons? Basically raindrops. I’ve had it tank stupid volumes of firepower. A very fun toy!

Put her in the Awakened Dynasty with a Technomancer and the +1 to hit enhancement somewhere nearby, and watch the carnage. The Singularity Generators will wipe out an entire brick of Terminators in an instant, and she's devastating in melee too. Given the Necron's judicious use of teleportation, it makes more sense for them to just mount a big freaking gun (like, starship grade weaponry) on something they can teleport and just warp the weapon into a firing lane against an enemy titan and then just blow said titan to hell.

IMO there's such an enormous spread of quality on those both in design and execution.
The Imperium's Titans together with tyranids are just in a league of their own there.
Many of the others just seem like upscales of the smaller models. I can forgive the Tau because of the coolness factor of putting more guns on bigger mech (though it could do with some design adaptations to suit that) but the Eldar construct just looks like a first draft and lacks any sense of scale.

I just want Ta'unar Supremact Armors to get a points reduction and the battlesuit keyword. They got nerfed because Eldar and Knights abused the Titanic rules and got hit by the indirect nerfs because it has 2 SMS. 700 points and the ability to use Stim Injectors would make it almost as good as some of the meta Tau units.

having played against the supremacy armour, i will say, for 790 points it does do a very good job of making the entire game revolve around it. which i think is how you want a model like that to feel, even if it isn't the most efficient thing in the index.

  • @torinnbalasar6774

Ta'unar are actually one of the few models I don't think want Tetras. They already get hit rerolls on 1s when guided with their own ability, and with the heavy keyword on the rail cannon, it's effectively 2+, so Stealth Battlesuits giving it the wound rerolls on 1s, it means it's practically guaranteed to both hit and wound. If you have enough points for more observers, Tetras or Pathfinders wouldn't be a bad idea for split-fire options though, but even then the Tetras ability only matters when rolling a 2, so Pathfinders might still be the more efficient secondary option.

  • @daringdarius5686

Nobody asked, and but here I am:
As others have mentioned (I see you DerrickTitley), when you drop a Titan into a regular game (or larger game if not possible), there is very much a psychological effect.
When I brought a Warhound into my escalation League (only did so if the opponent was comfortable with it, otherwise I brought in regular guard along) every time the opponent would be intimidated by the sheer size of it, the T13, and 40 Wounds made it seem unstoppable.
People would think the match is unwinnable, and I'd have to convince *them* to try and fight it, because in all honestly, the Warhound at 1100 points is viable for casual, and pretty terrible for a competitive match. It's essentially just a tanky Castellan... for 1100 points. It is objectively better to bring 2x Castellans, save 50 points, and have roughly 1.6x the damage output, if you're rotating ion shields, roughly 1.5x the durability, 2 models, the ability to split fire, etc.
Then you get into the mess of indirect nerfs that 9e and 10e brought, i.e. the heavy use of ample terrain basically restricts the usage of Titans in general. Many titans basically just aren't allowed to move (not that you want to move some of them *glances at the Warlord*)
The funniest (and most tragic) moment was in the first match I played with the Warhound, Morven Hall got into melee with it and dealt something around 28 wounds to it in a single turn. I went from 36 hitpoints, to 8 and was bracketed immediately. The Warhound was dead Turn 3 and if it wasn't for the fact that I held some early objectives, the gap in victory points would've been greater (54 to 70, I ran the gambit because after the Warhound went down, it was impossible to get any more victory points, so I had to roll an 11 or higher, rolled a 9. I lost.)
But from my perspective (Note: all titans are "poor" in terms of performance per point. This "perspective" is accrued from playing multiple 5k+ point games and apocalypse games, and how these titans have faired in a real game under different conditions, so this is more of "compared to other big things" how useful these models are, because ultimately, if you're enemy has a 1000+ pt Titan, spamming Shadowswords is by far the best solution.):
Warlord: Is useable at 3500 points but poor competitively. Was trash in 9th with 5000 point cost, and utterly useless in 8th ed with 10,000 point cost. I love GW's for trying to allow fun large models to not be completely terrible. Simply doesn't have enough quantity of firepower to justify it's usage unless you get the Apoc Missile Launchers, and even then... But very fun to fight!
    Reiver: Actually not bad!
Warbringer: I have no idea, no experience with it.
    Warhound: Actually not bad!
Thunderhawk: Pretty decent all things considered. Flyers usually their rules don't shine that much and when you stack "Titan" on it it only gets worse, but it's a transport with decent firepower and decent durability. Per point? Trash, but casual play? Pretty good! Remember, many people actually use it as a transport, and cram it full of terminators with power fists who charge out turn 2 and do some pretty devastating dmg... If they survive that long, putting terminators into it and treating as a transport becomes a high priority target, so the model is really only usable in 5k vs 5k (or greater) battles.
Stormbird: Same as the Thunderhawk, except no clusterbombs in exchange for the rest of the rules being significantly improved for an additional ~200 points, and arguably the best Ranged Titan Flyer in the game atm.
    Astraeus: Almost competitive! Very nice!
Mastadon: Not competitive at all, but not bad!
Marauder Bomber: Clearly needs a buff. If I was to face one in game, I'd tell the other player he is free to choose between bombs every drop, and drop it's points to 300. We're basically retired competitive players, it's in a very rough spot. We play for fun, so no needs to get our knickers in a buch.
Stormblade: Not bad! Being so cheap makes it borderline competitive.
Knight Asterius: Honestly, it's mortar is pretty good. Anti-Infantry 2+ basically marks everyone short of Primarchs to be a 2+, but like everything it has, it is lacking (AP-1 makes it mediocre, AP-2 from big cannons is underwhelming, especially as most tanks and heavy fortifications have 2+ save, with some having a 2++ either due to rules, or cover, i.e. save on a 3+). Just get the Knight Porphyrion :) older kit, much nicer model imho.
Ares Gunship: One of the best Titan flyers in the game, probably the 2nd best ranged flying Titan. Genuinely a pleasure to see one. Low-ish points cost, high durability for a titan flyer, high firepower and bombing rules = nothing to sneeze at. It's magna blaze cannon (in play) I've seen typically far outdamages the entire kit of the Asterius on big models (Titans typically face Titans), and the model is a flyer (typically lower durability in exchange for LoS and movement) at a 33% reduction in points.
Land Raider Banisher: Unfortunately terrible, but it won't affect gameplay at only 255 pts
Brass Scorpion: I've only seen it in play once in 8e, it absolutely destroyed the enemy Grey Knights and it's stat profile (all things considered) hasn't change too much. Considering how powerful Dark Pacts have affected 10e, I think that played well, it could borderline be competitive. But ultimately, things such as terrain gatekeep it currently.
Phantom Titan: I fought one twice before, I think it used to be about 3500 points? At 2100 points and similar stats, it seems useable. The only downside is it's comparatively short range and lack of anti-horde (in large scale battles, Space Marines become "Horde" mind you). On a regular board, no problem for range, but melee destroys it. Suffers the same fate of a Warlord.
Revenant Titan: Actually useable due to far fewer points!
Gargantuan Squiggoth: Fought once before before the player moved out of state. It's a tanky bugger, and quite good especially for it's points cost. The guy had 2 of them! Only reason I don't see more of them is honestly probably the price tag at Admech level pricing (Most titans are usually around $1 for 1.5 points in general, but this model is $1 for 0.92 points)
Supremacy Suit: F this model (one of the best ranged titans imho, standing close to Shadowsword spam and Porphy), especially in 8e and 9e. Just cover it in shield drones and laugh incessantly. Point for point, nearly as good as a Castellan, so it's definitely useable, but once you start swarming the thing in shield drones, don't know the current state of Tau shield drones 10e (I believe they're free, but only grant an additional wound to the model, and you only get some free ones if your a certain sept or detachment or smth), but a few extra wounds is fine.
Manta: Great for holding pizza! Saw it actually be used in battle once. One of the most hilarious things ever (we played on 4 tables grouped together, total size was ~16 ft x 8 ft), deployment was long end to long end. Since it was a Chaos + Tau player vs Guard + Space Marines, Tau player had it put into reinforcements, and asked ahead of time if he could proxy some regular infantry as stealth suits (we agreed stealth suits don't have infantry keyword but should be treated as such, but shouldn't be treated as 1 transport capacity, so we agreed on 2 and 100 were thrown out into the battle). It was a 10k vs 10k battle. Yep, he did it. *music starts playing as 100 "stealth suits" drop on our side alongside Mortarion and Magnus* it was a very fun match! :) oh, and uh, I guess it transported his units into range, so did it's job well. We ignored it, it did some damage. Apparently shooting at the 4 charging Khorne Lord of Skulls took priority over worrying about Stealth Suits. \o/
Heirophant: Honestly, just a rock solid model. Looks sick, imposing, 810 pts is fair for what it brings, very enjoyable to fight against!
Harridan: imho the best Titan flyer to EXPERIENCE in the game. It's massive, and at 610 points, I almost wish I could go back and find somebody who owns 3 of these and some Harridans running up the board and into entrenched positions. They're massive, and ok rules wise.
Seraptik Heavy Construct: I've seen 2 people build them at my local store... Haven't gotten to face one. Rules wise, seems perfectly fine for a titan. Basically a Necron Shadowsword with some extra flavor.
Tantalus: Beautiful model, great rules for a Titan, and low points cost makes it a no brainer. If I was a Drukhari player, I would buy 2 CP boxes, a Tantalus, and call it a day ngl.
That's all I can remember off of the top of my head. Hope this helps somebody!

So I actually have a good amount of experience running the Astraeus in both Ironstorm and Gladius, and I honestly think that Gladius is the better take for it, Storm of Fire is essentially +2 AP in a lot of circumstances when in devastator doctrine, and it makes that primary weapon absolutely CRIPPLING into many targets, and coupled with the Las-Rippers, you've basically also got 5 lascannons strapped to it, and giving them AP-4 with Ignores Cover is HUGE for punching through other heavy vehicles, it's the difference of something like a Landraider or a Dreadnought saving on 3's without SOF or saving on 5's with SOF active, assuming Armor of Contempt, which means DOUBLE the damage going through saves on average! ((It's a similar story with the main gun under SOF as well, 2+ save stuff with Cover and AoC goes from saving on 2+ to saving on 3+, which again doubles damage output, however if they don't have access to AoC, it TRIPLES the damage the main gun does))

Mechanic wise, I loved the version that had voidshields that has 3 wounds but absorbed one hit completely. They regenerate 1 point if gone or get back to 3 if one or two remaining.
Lore wise, they often make mistakes thinking somewhat big is super rare. If you have battles with millions of tanks and billions of infantry, you could easily add thousands of Warlord titan sized units. Compared to voidships everything is tiny.
To combine fluff and crunch, they should emphasize the titan QUALITY that is of its own league. The reactors are miniaturized versions of the best of the best tech. This allows them to power shields and weapons several tiers above their weight class.
As a contrast they should give orks HUGE mechanical monstrosities that are quantity over quality. Knight-sized mechs equivalent to dreadnoughts, warhound-sized mechs equivalent to knights and even bigger ones whose stats only equate to a warhound. They lack the nifty shields but could have some ablative wounds mechanic or just be super cheap wounds.
Whatever the imperium produced is a compact version with the shields that need to be stripped first, an outer layer of armor with the highest toughness before you get to the meaty inside.
For Daemons they could have scaling stats depending on a degree of how materialized it is. The same model could have a 500p, 1k, 2k or even 4k point value (if you want to fight in the warp).
Psykers could also scale, normally adding 20, 40 or 80 points to a model, but go beyond to 160, 320 or even 640 point. Each level could give an extra die to boost a power, reroll or use multiple powers per turn. This makes 'Nid HQ and bio-titans extra scary, and psychic daemons...

I own a porphyrion and a thunderhawk, and i gotta say that the most fun way to play either one is just casually with a bunch of infantry. Your opponent gets something big to chew through, you get an epic centerpiece model, and due to the way the game works youre not likely to stomp them with one model.
The most important thing to remember is to have fun, cause thats what the game is for. Sure i can tailor a list around one of those models to make sure my weaknesses are covered, but wheres the fun in that. I wanna drop 15 jump intercessors in your face with a massive airplane that just came out of left field to reinforce my vestiges of a scout company, or send a behemoth with lasers hurtling downfield at your gunline, not just overpower you with dice.
Thats what the titan models are for, over just rolling dice. They're there to make a cool story and a memorable game

Personally I prefer the Doomhammer variant. S12, D6+3 shots, and AP -4 Magma Cannon and when shooting at Vehicles and Monsters it's always considered to be in half range allowing you to do D6+6 melta to those targets. Then you get 4 lascannons, 2 twin heavy bolter, and 4 twin heavy flamers. Then run 2 Kasrkin squads with psykers and cadian castellans and throw them inside bc its transport 26 with firing deck 12 and now you have 4 plasma guns, 4 melta guns, 2 psykers with dev wounds, and 2 Plasma pistols and you just rip through everything (could even throw in a singular psyker by themselves just for the hell of it to get even more potential dev wounds). The amount of firepower you can bring to bear and the sheer volume of overwatch is ridiculous.
