    Do you set up a ssid for both 2.4 and 5.0 I’m assuming it’s an ac class router, looking to purchase this possibly that’s how I found your video

      Good question. It has 2 or 3 bands normally 2.4 and 2 x 5.0ghz and it automatically selects the best so it just shows as a single name... You can dictate which devices use what in settings. They're fantastic.

      Flat Top if you can just buy Orbi AX 6000. As devices start to move to WiFi 6 you might as well future proof instead of investing in a standard that will be overrun by WiFi 6. In a speed test my Samsung WiFi 6 phone connected to my Orbi AX beats the snot out of my iPhone 10 which is WiFi 5 which is also connected to my Orbi AX 6000. Or you can get a MOCA set up which uses your coax cables in the walls of your home as an Ethernet chord essentially and get close to wired speeds in multiple rooms.

      Yup when I set up mine it automatically separated the 2.4 & 5.0 I have no clue why it chose certain devices for 2.4 a certain ones for 5.0 but I just left it that way.

      Placesandspaces35 not shortly after buying this router I found out about WiFi 6E which is the new and better WiFi over WiFi 6. It’s gona be a few years tho before companies start marking equipment to Handel WiFi 6E and I wasn’t gona wait a few years, although some company do have WiFi 6e products already just not enough companies.

    Hi, Thanks a lot for the review!!! Really appreciate the fact that, as an installer, you are recommending Orbi. Here in Aus, the Orbi AX4200 and the Asus AX600 (AX XT8) are at the same price though so am hesitating between the 2. We've got a 2 storey, 5 Bedroom house (no concrete walls), about 3000sq feet. I was wondering which one you'd go for, based on your experience? Thanks again. Cheers

    Good video but one tip and an issue I ran into when I set up my friend's Orbi, when naming your network, on the Orbi RBK50 series, the Orbi allows you to use special characters like the underscore which he used and I also did when I set up my friends WiFi name, DON'T DO IT. I ended up upgrading his setup to the the RBK850 series about 8 months later, which does not allow special characters (like underscore) and I had to give the WiFi a whole new name and had to go and rejoin all 26 of his devices to the new network just because of one character that was not allowed in the new system. Now, when I set up systems for friends, I never use special characters for WiFi names in case I upgrade them to something that doesn't allow special characters in the future.

    The good discussion he had with the Best buy employee who said he lives in an apartment is you can pick any of them, it doesn't really matter. They're all kind of the same, my area is smaller, just my apartment.

I am thinking of putting unit 2 in the opposite corner of the first floor. We have bedrooms directly above to the right or directly above and to the left depending on which corner I an at. Yes 2 on bottom and one in middle top. You don't need to put the 2 on complete opposite sides of the home. You want them 1/4 of the way in from side of house, as you get no benefit from putting directly against the external walls.

  • @RealGrumpyGeek

    It failed because you rebooted the modem before unplugging the previous router .. Most home cable modem setups will only talk to one device , and once it is linked it will not connect to another , which means it linked to the old router when you powered it on.

    The Mesh Wifi needs to be connected to the modem. These days most router has a built-in modem. Is there any reason why the company making the Mesh Wifi can't make one with modem built-in? It would be good to only have one device connected to a power source instead of two (a Mesh Wifi connected to a Modem) and that will also clear space on the table.

    • @BTheInstaller
      @BTheInstaller  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They don't make them with the modem because modems are offered by the ISP. So they just don't sell those well. The mesh systems are for when the basic coverage fails in a bigger home. They do make some of these with satellites that can just sit on a power outlet. I like those.

    when i installed my orbi ac3000 on the app it says "THE APP DOES NOT SUPPORT YOUR ROUTER MODEL". My router i have my orbi hooked up to is from like 2010. do i need to buy a new router ? as of right now my wifi is much better than what it was before i hooked up the orbi. it was 15 Mbps and now it's 60-80 Mbps. I know my mbps still should be in the 100's+ because I have it in a space less than 1000 Sqft. • @BTheInstaller
      @BTheInstaller  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's confusing. The app works with the orbi router. You mean the modem? The orbi takes any internet in and routes it. So I would contact netgear regarding the app function. You may need to upgrade the MODEM to get more speed from your ISP. The ISP like cox or att need to provide the speed and the orbi will push it out fast as they can provide it.

Which is the best way to connect the orbi mesh system ?

    • @BTheInstaller
      @BTheInstaller  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to connect an orbi to the modem. I am not as familiar with the fjos, but you either connect it to the modem/router via an ethernet, or you get a straight modem at best buy and call fios and connect your own modem to their network. Either way the orbi isn't the weak link no matter... and yes make sure you turn off your other wifi as your devices may try to stay on that network which is not as large and when you walk further Way and the orbi catches, it will drop your connection and switch and when you come back closer it may again cut to go back to the fios. If you have speed issues, speed test the old system and see if they are giving you the speeds you're suppose to get.

    I have a question, I currently use Google WiFi, but I want to change it as I have a problem where it doesn’t do QOS well so if someone is watching tennis in a fire stick, I can’t stream games over GeForce Now. I was thinking of getting the Amplifi Alien mesh kit but it’s not out in my country yet. So I was wondering how does the Eero Pro hold up? Does it manage devices well? I did buy the best WiFi to try but some of my devices wouldn’t connect and it was a mess so I sent it back. Here in the UK we also have Sky Q which we have, and the main box drops off the WiFi now and then as it doesn’t like single SSID setups and they seemingly try to make it connect off the 2.4GHZ band to the 5GHZ band and it stops the connection, the Sky Q system uses its own MESH media system to work with satellite boxes round the home , but it’s the main box that connects to the router.

      B The Installer Yeah WiFi I’ve found over the years is nothing if not ‘finicky’ in what does and doesn’t work in a particular location.. I had the first gen Orbi set and just found it clunky to use, plus all its extra features didn’t seem to make much difference, i then went over to Google WiFi which has worked alright but some devices like my Sky Q have issues, it’s currently connected by home plugs. And WiFi 6 Mesh systems are very expensive currently, I like the Amplifi Alien but it’s not for sale in the UK and probably won’t be for ages.
      I was thinking of trying the Eero Pro but it doesn’t support PPPOE connections, which is what a lot of UK providers use so I’ll end up with double NAT, not good.
      So I’m split between the Dream Machine or a new ASU’s WiFi 6 unit coming out, but I’ll get the Dream Machine as where it goes it’s in full view and looks a lot better, plus has all the power I’ll need and I can add a Mesh point if needed.

      I have this unit and my last speed test on Comcast 1 gig plan was 940mbps down 42mbps up, & 14 ping. That’s with a netgear nighthawk cm1200 modem.

      Ridin_ Low I just grabbed the Netgear CM1200 last night along with the Orbi AC3000. Right now we’re getting 300 speed from Comcast. Possibly going to increase to 600. Not sure about the 1gig as these orbis can only stream a max of 500 from what I have heard and read.
      I’ll be installing these units tonight so hopefully I can get some good results.
      I’ll try the 300 speed for a few days with streaming to fire sticks ATT TV our phones, ring doorbell and whatever else we have connected and then decide if increasing to 600 is necessary. It’s only 5.00 more a month and the router I grabbed is certainly set for future increases as it can handle 2gigs.
      Thank you

      Alan Mahler hey you should love it. And actually the model orbi I have is the rbk852 and it can Handel speeds of 2.5gigs. BUT there is a correction to those speeds I posted. Yes I can easily get speeds of 900mbps and up BUT I found out that those speeds are just to the router. Once the signal is sent over WiFi if the device doesn’t have WiFi 6 your not get get anywhere near your 1 gig plan. My & my wife’s iPhone 11 Pro is the only WiFi 6 device’s we have. Highest speed I got on one was around 800mbps but all other device tests are around 300-400mbps. The device that to me benefited the most when I change from the rented router/modem from Comcast was my ring doorbell pro. The signal before was that great but now I can hear people great. My guess is the ring pro can do 5GHz VS 2GHz if your router supports 5GHz whatever that means lol but I know your router has to be able to do 5GHz. And when I got this new orbi and download the app I could see all my devices and what frequency they were on. And I’m assuming since the ring pro can handle 5GHz it switched it over to that because not all my device on the app were 5GHz actually most were still 2GHz.

      Alan Mahler and also yea I got this equipment with the same mind set that I’ll be “future” proof. If ever I get a plan higher then 1 gig which Comcast has and it’s called GIG pro. And I found out that I wouldn’t even use this new modem I bought 😢. They still have to rent you something called a juniper. BUT I can still use my orbi Rbk852.

      Orbi is my preferred mesh wifi system. Sometimes a little annoying to get set up but clearly the most expansive system. 2500 sq ft each unit

    can you hardwire the satellite to router, via switch?

    • @BTheInstaller
      @BTheInstaller  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A satellite? I know some direct systems come through the internet now, not sure what you mean... the orbi has a 4 poet switch on it so you can plug in 4 things. And a switch. Sometimes if you plug a switch into LAN it can confuse things like ATT boxes.

      Ah, I understand what you mean. You can hardline these to each other with switch. I can't remember if it was better to do modem to switch then to router then run the line directly to the 3 satellites from router or if we did the modem to router to switch then to satellites. But it worked one of the two ways.
