I love Magneton being so uninteresting cause thats what makes it interesting, it gives it its little character in the wacky life that is RBY and thats more important than any competitive niche
The weird thing about Magneton not getting Explosion is that, in the TCG, early Magnemite/Magneton cards were pretty much synonymous with Selfdestruct/Explosion, with multiple variants of the mons getting the move in some form.
Everyone's down here talking about magneton glowing up in future gens, but can we talk about your glow up though?? Ily and am so happy to see you evolving, literally one of my favorite creators 🫶
Magneton is the housemate who says he's doing all he can because he has a job and cleans just as much as you, but since he's 3 Magnemites, he really should be providing more than one mons worth of work.
It's so funny to me that after this, Magneton becomes one of the *most* interesting pokemon, a mon that's specifically used because of its steel trapping and even when magnezone is released, it sees use in lower tiers and also *tiny* use in OU for being just a little bit faster, it inspires crazy nonsense like max speed max special attack HP ground Skarmory.

RBY is such a special confluence of classic RPG design, unintended bugs and obscure mechanics, and a bunch of other weird stuff, that it'd be pretty hard to recapture that magic. But it'd be incredible if someone was able to pull it off.
I adore your editing. The sounds you use and the text you write for these quick lil jokes send me. Nidoqueen's "He's so talented" and Magneton 'Drinks to Forget' just slayed me.
When I think of uninteresting pokemon in gen 1 in terms of what they offer compared to other pokemon, Wigglytuff is unfortunately what comes to mind. Its movepool has very little over Clef; it has the same base attack; its Special and speed are worse, and despite the higher HP, it is less bulky on both sides. The only things I'm aware of that Wigglytuff has over Clefable is Disable (which is so much worse in gen 1 than in modern anyway; 55% accuracy and is random), and taking less recoil from Double Edge by virtue of its higher HP. But Wigglytuff would generally prefer Body Slam in any case, especially with Double Edge only being 100 Power. At least in Magneton's case, while it has many things holding it back, its stats for a pure electric type has some merits to it. But in Wigglytuff's case, there's a pure Normal type that fulfills almost everything it does but with better attributes. I believe Wigglytuff's main applications are just being a second but weaker Clefable.
A whole community coming together to talk about Gen 1 Magneton getting 40+ minutes of content out of it. If that isn't the Christmas spirit, I don't know what is.
damn i love your videos so much. i was stoked to see plague von karma guest starring in *another* big rby video. your ending monologue was really poignant, that and the sheer amount of people who contributed made this video feel really special. happy holidays!
i love how "the second magnemite in magneton" is their own individual with a youtube channel who can separate from the rest. that's just really funny to me
I'm really glad that you talked about "something having a niche in a tier vs. something just being USABLE in a tier". It's very different; something not doing anything special in a tier doesn't always mean it's worthless. People throw shit and make fun of me for running Weezing on a lot of my gen 1 OU teams, saying "wtf, Weezing doesn't do anything special, why are you using it?" And I simply answer "because it has a stat over 80". Look, as nice as it is to *try* and *attempt* to win battles (which really is fun), some of us just want to see a Chansey take ≈33% from a 65 base power Poison move. Magneton is in that boat, too. If you want to use it, it's not worthless, and there ain't no one stopping you.
I have to say seeing your style journey over time has been a thing of beauty. You're not just on point with how you present your content, but how you present yourself and it's really enjoyable to watch. Keep it up, good looking!
I find it crazy magneton doesn't learn self-destruct or explosion. In the card game, the first set has Magnemite and Magneton, and both have self-destruct, I just figured they had it in the game
I remember running into it in PU at some point, I switched Nidoqueen into a Thunderbolt and used Substitute. Needless to say, I was quite surprised when they read my move, stayed in and used Hyper Beam, and was ready to commend them for such an epic gamer play. And then the sub didn't break.
Magneton is such a rags-to-riches Pokemon. From being the weird slow Electric type in gen 1, to becoming one of the few coveted Steel types in gen 2, to being _the_ Skarm killer in gen 3, and getting an evolution in gen 4. Maybe there's a little bit of Magneton in all of us... Merry Christmas Big Yellow. 🧲😳🧲 🧲😳🧲 🧲😳🧲
i think it's weirdly funny and very sad that what makes magneton interesting to me in an rby context is the fact that it's the only rby mon (alongside magnemite) to get a type change going into gen 2, which is an interesting trait but one that is tied to a game that isn't gen 1, yet is still intrinsic to rby depending on your pov
Confession: ...This video made me kinda wanna try using Magnemite/Magneton in a playthrough of a Pokemon game. Almost definitely not as a competitive choice, heavens no--but something appeals to us about weird, obscure stuff where its most notable thing is its complete and utter *lack* of otherwise notability. It's like the "There can be no uninteresting numbers, because one number would be the first uninteresting number, which would be interesting!" paradox, but as a funny little guy made of three conjoined guys.
It's still messed up to me that magneton wasn't always steel type like it feels like it's just always been that way Also messed up that they gave magneton of all things an evolution in Gen 4 like what
I honestly forgot Magneton was in RBY, I thought it was a Gen 2 addition all this time. The idea of it checking Blastoise and Gyrados and Lapras but needing to switch out vs Diglett is hilarious.

Every time I watch a new RBY vid from you, I’m reminded of how much I wish they brought back old Hyper Beam. Such a High-Risk, High-Reward move! Better designed than some moves nowadays that are just insane. Think it would be very solid in the current gen’s meta.
The subtle but detailed edits to the RBY sprites to make everything more expressive is one of my favorite parts of big yellow vids. It adds so much to the comedy of the videos. Love it so much!!
i think this is your best video yet objectively all of the bits are on point and all of the editing is fantastic (and your lighting actually looks really good now) keep slaying
6:08 what's worse: it can't explode in gen 3, where it has massive issues of being useless after it traps skarm because it doesn't have magnezone stats.
Thank you Big Yellow i will start using Magneton in OU and complain on the RBY discord when some heinous individual blatantly counterteams me by bringing Rhydon and Eggy
Magneton in Gen 1: Who’s that? Magneton in Gen 2: I’m a Steel now (comes with double weakness). Magneton in Gen 3: The monster that Skarmory checks under its perch for, who will trap its fellow Steel-types and kill them with fire/electricity. Magneton in Gen 4: Gets an evolution. Magneton in Gen 9: Gets a Paradox form that’s a great fast special attacker with no double weakness, a good STAB combo (until it runs into a fucking plant) and can set Gravity for allies to seriously run Hypnosis.
Hey there everybody, this is Magneton, from Pokes. Did you know, my favorite things are: Switching into a Hyper Beam, stale toast, cereal without any milk, the newest season of the Pokemon anime aaaaaaand dust. See you in RBY NU everybody!
Ngl that thumbnail was a bit painful for me because I'm very soft on magneton~ Yay though I'm so glad to hear about its niche little use cases in RBY competitive! I have ran solo runs of Magneton in the same style of JRose in Yellow and really enjoyed it! Its an electric type that doesnt at all struggle with Brock thanks to Sonic Boom and its physical bulk helps out a ton against the Champion and Giovanni 3. If only this thing learnt Psychic though like Electabuzz, I'd predict that it'd be sub 50 minutes at 4x speed if it did and it seems like Magneton would make great use out of it in Comp too c: Also yes, it is an absolute demon as an oppodent in Yellow Solo Runs, depending on the mon you run it could be one of the hardest mons in the playthrough and it consistantly atleast causes problems against a lot of mons Thank you for the excellent video Yellow!
I appreciate their consideration of everyone before exploding. It’s nice that they don’t go the weezing and exeggutor route and pull everyone into their nonsense.
I would honestly love more of these deep insights and histories into the “dex filler” rby Pokémon to see if there’s some hidden cooking going on, like Seadra, Seaking or Fearow.
so looking at the current NU metagame for magneton: + lost its main competition in electrode + lost its main counter in golem + 4 new electric weak mons + one of them's a brand new check to charizard, the best earthquake user in the tier (also it clicks sky attack a bunch) + nidoking stocks plummeting + moltres and kabutops doing better - lost a valuable matchup in clefable - exeggcute replaced with the generally more threatening venusaur (vic also exists ig) - kingler's eating shit
The way you talk about Magneton and RBY and the end is beautiful. But honestly, nothing is more charming than the characterization you give all these Pokemon through the sprite edits and such!

amazing content as always and i adore the little thesis you've found in all of this. you've seriously nailed the self made storytelling of Pokemon. it's actually rewarding getting this greater understanding of rby and piecing it together through yours and other's content with how interactive it all seems together. genuinely i don't think anyone is doing the content you are. sure, rby content categorically you can find. but this little journey that comes to understand itself? this might be the content of all time. will rewatch this over my cereal like 5 times, thanks little creature on the computer. edit: FUCK i forgot your crazy sprites and editing here it's even better than usual.
As someone who is an avid solo run watcher, Magneton is actually extremely frustrating as a Pokemon. When you're optimizing and trying to squeeze everything out of a run to get it as fast as possible, its good bulk and crazy strong Thunderbolt make it really hard for a lot of Water-types to deal with. Sure, you can Mimic Earthquake from the Rival's Sandslash (in-game Gen I Mimic is the coolest move ever), but plenty of Pokemon won't OHKO Magneton with it and it will send them to the nether realm with Thunderbolt. There's often a bit of discussion with some worse Water-types on whether facing the Jolteon team is a better idea because of Thunder's inconsistencies and Jolteon's lesser physical bulk. It's a really scary Pokemon. Absolutely loved the video. RBY as a competitive scene is probably my favorite generation and I had no idea Magneton was even niche.
i have nothing to add to this conversation but magneton is my favorite gen 1 pokemon so seeing a dedicated video to it this morning is a very nice sight (especially one with such entertaining editing)
I'm happy to see someone still talking about RBY in some positive way still.. no one I know personally had anything good to say about it, a lot of TH-camrs I follow didn't either...
To me, someone who has never played RBY and only knows what she knows from watching youtube videos, it sounds like Magneton is actually a really good Pokemon, who is just massively, utterly unlucky, because there's always one or so walls that are just gonna bully the hell out of it and stop it from actually doing what it can. With just a little shifting, it'd be great. I think that's pretty interesting!

That frozen Golem really turned out to be an immovable object for poor Magneton.
unmoving object versus stoppable force
God being forced out by a frozen golem/rhydon has the same energy of Patrick being scared of that mock up sketch
magneton's unique trait is me loving it so much they are my special little guys
Magneton is the housemate who says he's doing all he can because he has a job and cleans just as much as you, but since he's 3 Magnemites, he really should be providing more than one mons worth of work.
It's so funny to me that after this, Magneton becomes one of the *most* interesting pokemon, a mon that's specifically used because of its steel trapping and even when magnezone is released, it sees use in lower tiers and also *tiny* use in OU for being just a little bit faster, it inspires crazy nonsense like max speed max special attack HP ground Skarmory.
If I had a nickle for every time PVK appeared as a guest commentator in a video about RBY metagames in the last month, I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot but it's very cool that it's happened twice

Big Yellow RBY videos have become comfort content for me, like videos I go back and re-watch all the time in the same way someone might put The Office re-runs on in the background
RBY is such a special confluence of classic RPG design, unintended bugs and obscure mechanics, and a bunch of other weird stuff, that it'd be pretty hard to recapture that magic. But it'd be incredible if someone was able to pull it off.
Gimme a few years, I’ll see what I can do
Why not just play RBY comp? It's free the cops can't stop you

Ah, yes. The Steel types in RBY video. Finally.
There is no way you can say "According to Gangsta SpongeBob" at 32:40 without cracking up
When I think of uninteresting pokemon in gen 1 in terms of what they offer compared to other pokemon, Wigglytuff is unfortunately what comes to mind.
The sudden mention of Gangsta SpongeBob felt like a fucking freight train
I think it's safe to say that this may be the best video you've ever made, hands down. Absolutely had me at the candlelit dinner scene.
Thanks so much a couple people have said that and it means a ton I worked super hard on it (:
A whole community coming together to talk about Gen 1 Magneton getting 40+ minutes of content out of it. If that isn't the Christmas spirit, I don't know what is.
damn i love your videos so much. i was stoked to see plague von karma guest starring in *another* big rby video. your ending monologue was really poignant, that and the sheer amount of people who contributed made this video feel really special. happy holidays!
I love the premise of this video, cuz like, being the only "nothing" pokemon in RBY is itself pretty interesting
Two of my favorite RBY players explaining the viability of a weird, hyperspecific Pokémon? This is the type of RBY content I live for!
i love how "the second magnemite in magneton" is their own individual with a youtube channel who can separate from the rest. that's just really funny to me
I'm really glad that you talked about "something having a niche in a tier vs. something just being USABLE in a tier".
Marowak finding viability SOMEWHERE and alongside Sandslash of all Pokémon is something I’d never imagine happening. You actually love to see it.
😭 my man can't catch a break
In effect, this whole video could be called "the viability of thunderbolt on a 120 special stat"
44 minutes of “I owe you an apology. I wasn’t really familiar with your game”
And I’m here for it
Magneton is such a rags-to-riches Pokemon. From being the weird slow Electric type in gen 1, to becoming one of the few coveted Steel types in gen 2, to being _the_ Skarm killer in gen 3, and getting an evolution in gen 4.
Maybe there's a little bit of Magneton in all of us... Merry Christmas Big Yellow.

i think it's weirdly funny and very sad that what makes magneton interesting to me in an rby context is the fact that it's the only rby mon (alongside magnemite) to get a type change going into gen 2, which is an interesting trait but one that is tied to a game that isn't gen 1, yet is still intrinsic to rby depending on your pov

i guess what makes magneton so special is how not special it is. it is the best at being boring and we appreciate it for that (:
Confession: ...This video made me kinda wanna try using Magnemite/Magneton in a playthrough of a Pokemon game. Almost definitely not as a competitive choice, heavens no--but something appeals to us about weird, obscure stuff where its most notable thing is its complete and utter *lack* of otherwise notability. It's like the "There can be no uninteresting numbers, because one number would be the first uninteresting number, which would be interesting!" paradox, but as a funny little guy made of three conjoined guys.
i was not ready for the sexy secretary big yellow jumpscare
It's still messed up to me that magneton wasn't always steel type like it feels like it's just always been that way
Also messed up that they gave magneton of all things an evolution in Gen 4 like what

sorry i just reached the part about TagMag and i am soooo happy to learn about a team using my favorite gen 1 pokémon (from an aesthetic perspective. i haven't really played these games or this tier at all LMAO)
Every time I watch a new RBY vid from you, I’m reminded of how much I wish they brought back old Hyper Beam.
Such a High-Risk, High-Reward move! Better designed than some moves nowadays that are just insane. Think it would be very solid in the current gen’s meta.
Or at least give a Pokémon an ability that lets it skip the recharge turn if it gets a KO with the move, c’mon!
@@insomniacnerd5592 this should have been paldean tauros's gimmick
I think if they won't restore this, then the hyper beam reskins should just gain the same gimmick as Gigaton Hammer; can't be used consecutively.
The subtle but detailed edits to the RBY sprites to make everything more expressive is one of my favorite parts of big yellow vids. It adds so much to the comedy of the videos. Love it so much!!
Merry Christmas Yellow!! Glad to see a 45 minute video about RBY OU in my sub box 🥹truly a Christmas miracle
i think this is your best video yet objectively all of the bits are on point and all of the editing is fantastic (and your lighting actually looks really good now)

I feel like I've mentioned this before, but I love the little sprite edits you do, it adds so much character to this
6:08 what's worse: it can't explode in gen 3, where it has massive issues of being useless after it traps skarm because it doesn't have magnezone stats.
Magneton in Gen 9: Gets a Paradox form that’s a great fast special attacker with no double weakness, a good STAB combo (until it runs into a fucking plant) and can set Gravity for allies to seriously run Hypnosis.
and yet afaik magnezone is still better in gen 5 than shocks is in gen 9
Understood, Magneton has had a wonderful history in every RBY tier and is basically the undisputed best Pokemon in each tier it is used in.
If only this thing learnt Psychic though like Electabuzz, I'd predict that it'd be sub 50 minutes at 4x speed if it did and it seems like Magneton would make great use out of it in Comp too c:
Also yes, it is an absolute demon as an oppodent in Yellow Solo Runs, depending on the mon you run it could be one of the hardest mons in the playthrough and it consistantly atleast causes problems against a lot of mons
Thank you for the excellent video Yellow!
Glad you enjoyed, admittedly this makes me want to try a solo run now, it honestly sounds pretty fun

I appreciate their consideration of everyone before exploding. It’s nice that they don’t go the weezing and exeggutor route and pull everyone into their nonsense.
Thank you for the fascinating recap on Magneton in ZU, Gangsta Spongebob
You're welcome
I would honestly love more of these deep insights and histories into the “dex filler” rby Pokémon to see if there’s some hidden cooking going on, like Seadra, Seaking or Fearow.
so looking at the current NU metagame for magneton:
+ lost its main competition in electrode
+ lost its main counter in golem
+ 4 new electric weak mons
+ one of them's a brand new check to charizard, the best earthquake user in the tier (also it clicks sky attack a bunch)
+ nidoking stocks plummeting
+ moltres and kabutops doing better
- lost a valuable matchup in clefable
- exeggcute replaced with the generally more threatening venusaur (vic also exists ig)
- kingler's eating shit
The way you talk about Magneton and RBY and the end is beautiful. But honestly, nothing is more charming than the characterization you give all these Pokemon through the sprite edits and such!
Damn, it is so hilarious that ZU might be a worse nightmare for Magneton than OU.
Its nice that in the middle of all the SPL and BO1 change controversy on Smogon, there's still wholesome vibes and genuine love for RBY. Merry Christmas Big Yellow :)
Gotta love the little edits to Magneton sprites and also just how good of a job Yellow did animating it. And likewise, Plague von Karma doing guest appearances on other RBY videos outside her channel. That is pretty cool.
hey I wanted to tell you that as a young trans kid that's into competitive pokemon and melee you're kind of an inspiration to me. I just came back from reading the recent Smogon-RBY drama regarding the BO3/BO1 debacle (thank god, the decision was reversed) and it was incredibly wild to see some of the RBY players who were involved in that drama be featured here.
Very incredibly cool, big shoutout to Ortheore, Pac, Plague von Karma, Sabelette, Teh, and Gangsta Spongebob.

I've had a hard time putting it to words but this is why I think I've always loved Big Yellow so much in general.
This is why Big Yellow is the goat
I have to say that this might be one of my favorite videos on your channel. I adore all the little sprites for the pokemon here, it amplifies the feeling of each pokemon having a story and personalities attached to them. I find it hilarious seeing golem being mentioned in nearly every single tier, and TagMag stuff is strangely sweet. This whole video is so fun as a concept and i genuinely cant get enough of how high quality it all is. Im a more casual pokemon player, but your damage number graphics are super informative and help a ton in processing what is being said. Overall, i just… adore this. Its fantastic.
This might just be, your absolutely most well done video ever, actually, no, it's something more than that, that's one of the most complete and well made pokemon videos i've ever seen, and it's a fucking 45 minute video about a specific pokemon that no one cared about LMFAO. Thhe magnezone line is my favorite evolution line in the series, so getting this video after christmas is something else man, thank you for all your dedication and hard work to pull out stuff like this, you have a bright future in the platform!
amazing content as always and i adore the little thesis you've found in all of this. you've seriously nailed the self made storytelling of Pokemon. it's actually rewarding getting this greater understanding of rby and piecing it together through yours and other's content with how interactive it all seems together. genuinely i don't think anyone is doing the content you are. sure, rby content categorically you can find. but this little journey that comes to understand itself? this might be the content of all time. will rewatch this over my cereal like 5 times, thanks little creature on the computer.
edit: FUCK i forgot your crazy sprites and editing here it's even better than usual.
you ate this up like magneton eats white pasta with no butter
I've been marathoning your videos lately and have been waiting with anticipation to see what you'd put out next. I definitely was not expecting a 44 minute video about Magneton. Thank you, I needed this
I still love Porygon's lore of like being accidentally invented by some scientists IIRC, like imagine if dogs didn't exist and then somebody accidentally invented dogs while trying to debug Ninjabread Man.
