Ground Type Pokémon in RBY (And why they're Mostly Great)

  • Been a while since I made a video on an individual type in RBY, so today we're taking a look at the Ground type! Unlike the other two types I've talked about in RBY, the Ground type is actually pretty great! There's definitely a couple of medocre mons in the bunch though, so let's talk about them, and why they can't match up to one particularly fantastic mon!

    The funny thing about Onix having a high defense and low HP is that it's basically optimized to make Bide as weak as possible. Wonder if they did that on purpose to keep Brock from being any harder.

      Onyx was always funny to me. In original rby you can literally just ember it down with Charmander because it's special is so abysmal, and you might think playing yellow makes him more challenging because your starter is Pikachu but yellows early game is ripe with answers for Brock.

      I remember reading a post discussing how Onix is a great example of early RPG boss design. His intimidating appearance+weak stats being done in a way to help novice players learn the ropes. It really got me thinking about how many Pokemon in gen 1 were designed to be balanced enemy encounters first, and good members of a team second. Especially since PvP wasn't even in the game until late in development, Game Freak probably felt plenty comfortable designing creatures like Onix.

      @@TectonicImprov yeah it would have worked great if the AI was a little better. The fact that he attacks randomly kind of kills the idea. It could have been a relatively challenging boss battle if it set up screeches properly.

      Yeah I understand it's not actually free in terms of any cost ever, I did mention it was an item. I meant that it doesn't need to spend a turn using SD to boost to that attack stat (obviously it can still boost further with SD) and it doesn't have the restrictions of later boosting items. You are right though in that if it was literally free then it would be very different and Marowak might have been viable for much longer.

    Onix is the best example of 'no they were not thinking PvP was going to even exist when making RBY' because he is pretty clearly just designed as a first boss who does not care if you hit it with tackle but if you use type effectiveness correctly you just win automatically. One thing to remember is that Pokemon is a mostly single player game (+trading for completion) first, casual multiplayer game second, competitive multiplayer game third.
      Mechanics were even put in place to obfuscate how good your pokemon's stats will be, to discourage taking PVP especially seriously.
      Bug types are bad because you meet bug trainers early in the story, earthquake is good because Giovanni is the last gym boss.
      They weren't designing for balance, they were designing for a curve. And there's places they fucked up with that (Like how dominant Psychic is when Sabrina's a mid-game gym) but that appears to be the goal.
      So, while they've taken some steps, I'm not surprised it's not a balanced game. It's not really meant to be.

Ground + almost any other type is great on offense and/or defense, EQ is a great move on any physical attacker, Earth Power is nice on special attackers, it's the only type that has more types it hits super effective than resists / immunities, you're resistant to Stealth Rock, immune to sand, immune to Tbolt and Volt Switch. The nido's aren't too quick, but with godly movepools and an ability that works beautifully with it, they just carve out more of a niche than most others do.
      It's a shame that there are so few rock and ground types that break the archetype of slow, bulky physical mons. The exceptions have been kinda killer, if they weren't held back by something else. *Glances at the terrible movepool or abilities of the rock flying types*

      On top of that, the omnipotence of Steel's resists are subverted by a clever EQ, and while Fire and Fighting also manage this, they're much worse offensively (generally less useful coverage after Normal never getting anything ever again and coverage done better by different coverage options respectively), and that's on top of the type having the craziest move to hit things with. Being a hard-counter in every respect to electrics also doesn't hurt, given how debilitating paralysis is, how overwhelming electric mid-tier legendaries tend to be (Zapdos, Raikou, Thundurous, Regileki seriously they keep getting away with it) and how ground types usually have something besides being a ground type associated with them, whether that be insane presence, a difficult-to-counter bulk or being Garchomp in gen 4. Just a quick comment early in the video: that hand of five Exodia legs is comically illegal; not only does Yugioh have a three card limit but all five pieces of Exodia are on the limited list, so they're _1_ per deck. Running multiple Exodia pieces like that would be such poor cheating that you'd just draw hands just like that and lose anyway.
    Edit: I'm surprised when you mentioned the Dig glitch, you didn't recommend people who are interested go watch your Banned Strategies video. I feel like it's pretty standard to encourage viewers to watch more of your videos, and you gave just enough info in this one to "get it" but left out enough details that going to see that video would be a good idea. Seemed like the perfect segue.

    The "discovery" in 2014 about bodyslam not paralizing normal types seems so wild and out there to me, I've known that since around 2006 when i played a lot of stadium and just noticed I never paralized any normal types with rental pokecup lapras's bodyslam which was one of my favorite pokemon. As a kid I though it made sense, "it's a normal attack so it doesn't paralize normals, just like how toxic can't poison poison types" Dx how nobody noticed this for so many years wtf

    • @NinjaLobsterStudios
      @NinjaLobsterStudios 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      yeah I think it just goes to show how much the competitive scene was centered around simulators (understandable if you want freeze/sleep clause among other things)
      Considering, on cartridge, psychic can special drop Zam, twave can para Zapdos, but toxic doesn't work on Muk, it isn't immediately obvious that status-as-side-effect doesn't affect the same type. I'd assume I was just getting unlucky in RBY single player if my body slams never para'd a normal type, unless you play it a TON like you did most ppl probably wouldn't even have enough scenarios to notice that some Pokemon never get para'd by body slam.
      It's pretty nuts

    Onix was designed to be the boss mon of the first Gym rather than an individual Pokemon. It's why he has an ungodly amount of Defense but no Attack or HP, and oddly solid Speed. He exists to teach the children playing Pokemon on their Gameboy that spamming Tackle won't win every battle for them, and to pay attention to type advantages/disadvantages.

  • @psyxypher3881
    @psyxypher3881 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    • @Laezar1
      @Laezar1 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@ultimapower6950 starmie is absolutely meant to destroy you though. I think it having access to bubblebeam and being very strong is on purpose. You're supposed to just lose that fight and go "oh shit" and then you decide to go elsewhere, get through your rival and nugget bridge, potentialy find a grass pokemon there and then come back a bit later better armed to deal with it *or* if you don't feel confident the game opens up a bit letting you go through vermillion's section before actuallly walling you off and asking you to beat misty to make progress.
      I feel like brock is meant to teach you "you can beat that, just persevere and change your strategy, play smart not hard". While misty is meant to teach you "sometimes it's best to comeback a bit later with higher level". Also it destroying you with bubblebeam makes it feel like a significant reward (and it really is at this point in the game). The same way that brock encouraging smarter approaches gives you a less direct move (a bad one but still that's the idea).
      After that the game does open up a lot though and while there is a mostly clear intended path I don't feel like any of the remaining trainers are giving you any clear lessons. You're pretty much out of the tutorial section after that. Well i guess surge is teaching you about catching other pokemon because it's got a very strong thunderbolt but it's completely shutdown by the digglet (or even worst the high level rare dugtrio) in diglet cave. But surge is also not very strong and almost completely optional for most of the game so there is that (very valuable badge for the ability to fly but flying isn't required).
      Honestly gen 1 might be broken as all hell, but as an adventure singleplayer game it's pretty well designed.

    I think Ground being so good is because Water has always ranged from decent to amazing in every gen and they both elevate one another. Water/Ground/Electric interactions have been a core relationship for near every metagame across multiple generations. Water washes Ground, but Electric threatens Water and Ground doesn't care about Electric.
    If you run a strong Water type chances are you will bring a Ground type to cover that Electric weakness AND when they are a dual type together it is one of the best typings possible. Sure not all water/ground types have crazy stats but their defensive and offensive coverage alone is wild. Swampert is a super flexible mon that can be used to tank, support, lead or be a monstrous attacker as a Mega because both it's stabs hit most types pretty hard. Then there's the flexibility of either Sand or Rain teams.
    I genuinely think in the upcoming Scarlet and Violet that the new mechanic allowing your Pokémon to change type is going to make mixed Sand/Rain teams interesting. Either remain their default type for Sand or Rain or just switch types to the other one depending on what the opponent is running.

Like a 4x weakness to most any other typing would be a deal breaker but water/ground is just THAT good for it to not really be something to be extremely concerned with. Garchomp needs to worry about ice beam coverage or Charizard worries about rock slide/rock blast/stone edge being commonly paired with ground moves it normally ignores but hardly anything runs Grass as coverage unless it has STAB.

    Nidoqueen is pretty seriously better then Nidoking in OU. They hit the same speed teir. They land virtually the same offensive calculations considering they have identical special which is what they use for match ups like Cloyster and Exeggutor... However Nidoqueen actually survives hits the Nidoking likely won't. It's actually really likely to take 2 Chansey ice beams while King isn't. And Queen is MUCH better against Tauros, where both Earthquake and Blizzard from Tauros are very likely 3HKOs on Queen, but always 2HKOs on King... furthermore, even in the good match ups against Cloyster and Exeggutor you're still gonna eat a Blizzard or a Psychic. Queen handles that MUCH better especially when considering that it also takes way less chip damage from Zapdos Drill Peck compared to King.... In Nintendo cup 1997 however Nidoking is often the better choice because it's speed actually does make a massive difference because at lv55 it'll outspeed lv50 Jynx (The best pokemon in the format) and shatter it with Earthquake. While at the same time Nidoking maintains the speed advantage at lv50 against the likes of lv55 Cloyster which is often used to handle lv55 Tauros (lv50 Nidoqueen doesn't); Who speaking of thanks to the extra 5 levels on Tauros also would 2HKO Nidoqueen just like King as opposed to in OU where it wouldn't.

    What's pretty clear from the meta, is that pvp was an afterthought for the devs. Look at rock throw, it sucks more than a vaccum, learned at bad levels, obviously meant to be balanced around kids in their first early game story ever.

    Pour one out for our boy Onix.
    Don't pour it on him though, he wouldn't survive.

    Yo just wanted to say how much i apprechiate your videos! I watched some of them 3 or more times. Got into RBY OU, it really is an interessting tier. Now I understand what people mean, when they talk about tauros, that thing is menacing.

    I am honestly appalled, it's been 9 months and I still haven't seen a single comment mentioning the fact that you used a Muk named William Afton and a Pinsir named Notorious B.U.G. Honestly every single nickname you used in this video is a 10/10

    You were able to tank a hit from the ground itself, I think you'll take a Golem Explosion just fine. And Onix, while at it, too.
