On the note of really weird Assist shenanigans, did you know that it's a banned move in exactly gen 6 Balanced Hackmons? A buddy of mine made a joke-ish team back then that ran 2 Prankster Primaldon (ability clause prevented more than 2 copies of an ability per team), Imposter Chansey, and 3 mons that used only non-callable moves + V-create, and it worked alright. Then someone thought "you know, idrc if half of my team is PDons that only have Chatter, non-priority V-create, Whirlwind, and protecting moves, that's still cracked." This was followed shortly by someone innovating on it by using Thousand Arrows instead of V-create since it nullified a larger pool of already-niche answers like PrimSea Ferro (which was checked by your DesoLand Pdon) or Flash Fire (similarly handled by the one with Mold Breaker). Pretty much the only true silver bullet I remember to the strategy was Prankster Imprison Mega-Gengar, a pretty useless set in any other matchup. Then someone proved that Primal Kyogre could do the same thing with the raw power of Steam Eruption, and Assist wound up banned shortly after. Funnily enough Mega Rayquaza was never able to pull the strategy off well bc it still lost to most steel-types, which is also the main reason that it remained legal in gen 6 BH while the Primals were both eventually banned. These are two of the funniest facts I'm got from oldgen BH, besides the fact that it was BH players who first developed endless battles
Surprised that you didn't mention Shelmet as a Urshifu counter. With eviolite it has a surprising physical bulk. Has recover, and shell armor makes it immune to being crit by Surging strikes/Wicked blow. It can kill them back with infestation or put them to sleep with yawn. And Iron Defense makes you not setup bait against them.
If you try hard enough you can find a niche for any Pokémon. Did you know that gsc charmeleon has the highest dragon type move while not being a dragon type itself in gsc NU? With a dragon scale, it can beat dragonair one on one a little over 60% of the time. The reason why you want a dragon type move and not an ice type is because you want to chunk the common teammate of dragonair and likely switch in Kingler, which is very dangerous if it can get up a swords dance for free
"If you try hard enough you can find a niche for any Pokémon." I mean if you're willing to go into tiers nobody plays... and the battle tower which isn't even a tier. Otherwise... not sure about that.
@@Eroil Sash Feebas is actually a lead not to be slept on in Little Cup because it threatens a ton of super common leads with it's absurdly niche combination of Oblivious, Protect, Hypnosis/Toxic, Mirror Coat and Flail. It's worth noting that despite Assist being a cut move, the flag that decides whether or not a move can be called by it is still in the game which is why Revival Blessing works with it on Showdown. Of course if Assist were kept in the game then it probably wouldn't be flagged as Assistable, but NatDex doesn't like adjusting data like that cause it can set bad precedent.
That's pretty interesting. Like when they imported all the old move data over they had the assist flags so it was probably less work to give ever new move a flag than it was to remove it as a whole
@@HumanReverend Even more bizarrely, if you take a look at the game data, you'll come to find that not a single new move has the flag set... except for the Story exclusive Starmobile Torque moves which are used by the Team Star leaders
@@HumanReverend It's also not the first time Liepard has abused moves that should be on the Assist blacklist but aren't. In exactly Gen 5 NU Assist Liepard was a viable strat that wound up being banned for being awful to play against because you would run Liepard with Assist, Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot, and Substitute and then 5 backup dancers with cobbled together movesets that avoid running a single Assistable move except for Roar and Whirlwind. The goal was to leverage one of two win conditions; the first being hopefully getting hazards up through Ditto and just shred your opponent's team with Priority Roar, the second being to utilize the Priority Roar to fish for Pokemon that Liepard can set up on to sweep. The problem is that Liepard is kind of bad and struggles to execute this gameplan in higher tiers where it gets threatened out of setting up or just outright killed and walled despite +6 and a sub. However Gen 5 NU had Musharna as a common defensive staple and Musharna was free set-up for Liepard as it would have to give up one of its valuable move slots for *Signal Beam* to not be cat food. It was probably the worst best team strategy to ever exist until NatDex brought us the Kitty Hospital and I'm glad it got to pull some final bs after Game Freak tragically blacklisted Roar and Whirlwind.
@@StarfieldDisarray There's also DiveCats, which is where ReviveCats got its name! In, once again, literally only gen 5 (and only really being viable in vgc i think?) two-turn moves like Dive and Fly are able to be called by Assist. Liepard and its pre-evo which i can't remember the name of right now would use that and some way of making sure they go last like iron ball or lagging tail or something to use a +1 priority first turn of Dive and a neutral priority second turn to effectively be invincible against basically all regular damaging moves.
While we're on the topic of Gen 9 flag setting that matters to *almost* nobody, the flag that Triage uses to check whether something is a recovery move (& thus granted +3 priority) is not set for Bitter Blade, despite the fact that Bitter Blade does recover HP. This is completely irrelevant for 99.999% of Pokemon players because Comfey isn't in S/V so the interaction would never come up. It is, however, very vexing to people who play Other Metagames, where Ceruledge might otherwise run a sweet Triage set.

Weird niches in competitive Pokemon have always seemed like a strange case to me. On one hand if you like how a Pokemon works but hate how it looks it's nice to have another option to choose from. But on the other hand, pokemon usually look like they would function differently from their counterpart. And I've always thought it would be neat if cool looking pokemon like Golbat had more of an identity than "Its Zapdos but for stupid people" So I took a large number of pokemon currently available in the game and gave them their own set of stats ranging from "Slightly modified sidegrade to the original" to "Completely new Pokemon idea that's not balanced at all but a ton of fun."
You sadly left out the funniest niche Pokemon of all time, that being Deoxys-N, which is useless in every metagame - because it's not legal in 200 and every metagame after that had access to Deoxys A (and generally S) which are just better in every reasonable way - except for the very rare times that specific bits of bullshit come together to make it the superior option against itself.

@@mrschrubelhupfyay6397 I'm glad someone here is speaking up for the casuals. I use to run this dumbass Gen 7 Mega-Ray set just for free wins, and I had about 1500~ elo. The only other game mode i played was random mons because I don't like spending 3 years researching and working around clauses, and I can't even do that anymore :c
Fun fact: Meowstic-M also gets (prankster) Recycle, so with a leppa berry, it can theoretically use Revival Blessing infinitely
This man's voice is miraculously good at making any pokemon sound wildly pathetic
good god i kind of got distracted from showdown a while back, hearing about what happened because of revival blessing assist is just.. sad, honestly. there was tera electric shedinja too but that one i was able to counter by just throwing a necrozma on my team and killing every shedinja in my path in the most overkill way possible. i remember one time on natdex AG actually i got my shit kicked in by a team consisting of five weaviles and a tinkaton, the idea being that the tinkaton only knew gigaton hammer and so it was basically just the 5 weaviles using gigaton hammer over and over again. it was both really stupid and funny as fuck
Hammervile
Thank you for talking about Golbat in Ubers. My life is now complete (I'm the guy who commented it on your ubers video btw)
Proud of you

Man, Gen 1 Ubers is either magical or maddening. Can’t decide which
1:00 seeing gholdengo when searching up good is.....
Comedy ghold
Perhaps the Aerodactyl dominating Crystal Battle Tower made the developers realize they needed to ban Dragon Rage in Sunny Park Colosseum.
I'm here again purely because I remembered the one time my solrock beat some dudes zacian crowned 1v1 with will o wisp and EQ. This technically makes solrock the greatest anti ubers meta threat of all time, and in natdex ubers it becomes the ultimate role compressor being able to check both of the broken legendaries
And my Gigalith beat a six Shedinja team in one move: Stealth Rock. They dropped like flies all on turn 1.
When you brought up Urshifu-SS, I thought you were going to mention Shelmet, which basically ignores Wicked Blow's 100% critical hit chance and has access to recover allowing you to stall them out.
The downside is that CB variants can just 2HKO Shelmet after rocks damage because Urshifu-SS was stupidly busted.
and bug resists dark and fighting so thats fun.
@@fourthmatchflame Bug doesn't resist dark bro. It does resist fighting types tho.
@@amir9178 doesnt it?
@@fourthmatchflameno, bug deals super effective damage to dark but takes neutral damage
the delivery of this entire video is absolutely *chefs kiss*
my favourite pokemon has bad numbers and bad words but I still love it
Thank god you didn't stop making videos I can only rewatch the others so many times
I could probably watch Pokemon Cryptids every day for the rest of my life and die not having watched it enough
@@CaptainWwowW Personally I love the Gen 1 Ubers video, something about the long, borderline-irritated assurance that Chansey is meta sticks with me and I'll rewatch the whole video just for that bit.
I like Golem-Alola in SM OU being used in a smogon World Cup game solely as a bootleg magnezone that can trap heatran if it has a scarf. This is basically the only use for this mon in singles btw, it’s even outclassed by golem and Probopass in ZU
"And if they are lucky, maybe they even can ride that success all the way to the bottom of the top of the meta charts".
I will adop this phrase as my life mantra from now forward.
Bro I laughed so hard when I was first informed that Hold Hands is a legitimate move LOL
I finally found what the "Musharna BRB Saving OU" meme is based off of.
You’ve quickly become my favourite TH-cam personality. No hyperbole whatsoever. You remind me of what TH-cam used to be back before everyone made this a career. Just about making videos on the things you enjoy for better and for worse. Keep it up man!
your penchant for the howie scream is one of the many reasons I keep coming back to your channel despite not being very interested in competitive pokemon lmao
my man is just Good at Videos
I have to go out of my way to stop myself from just using it 10x in every video

golbats niche being explosion fodder is fucking hilarious
Randomly found this video again, i cannot express how much i love your script writing and vocal delivery
Thank you for the content❤️
Real ones got a sudden urge to backflip up and down a flight of stairs when Pachirisu showed up
Had no idea how stat exp worked before this video, no wonder they gave up on it completely
Oh like a Big Yellow video but without the slay
It's time. For reverend.
Every now and then I have a long day and throw on an old Reverend video to completely relax, it's the best
You are my personal Michael Bublé
This is the only time I will every forgive someone for pronouncing Niche (neesh) wrong
I FUCKING KNEW I WASN'T WRONG ABOUT THE PRONUNCIATION
This was a great video to watch while grinding an inconceivable number of caterpies for my competitive link battle mewtwo.
15:02 The moment you said "Pokémon Stadium", I knew where the Rage was being channeled to.
Mewtwo was in that cave because it was afraid of making its way out, with all those Golbat around. On the way in it didn’t know how scary Golbat were.
it was really cool of smogon to include that scarlet & violet fangame in their simulator. Hopefully one day the devs behind it can make a full-fledged video game!
Yeah, imagine how stable and fleshed out it would be if there was a professional team who was working on it as their day job
You’ve got such a cadence to your videos that I can’t put into words. Love your weird sense of humor and dryness, thanks for the new video!
I have been stopped in my tracks from musing about having first caught wind of LV85 Chansey from Big Yellow, but y'know what? I'mma put this forward anyway: I jive hearing competitive nerds explain quirky mechanical nonsense in good humor, and y'all all are in good company as good accompaniment for a chill night in on the TH-cams.

Me and the boys arriving at the function after having defeated exactly 285 Jigglypuffs and 149 Onixes and precisely nothing else.
Golbat beating MewTwo and a Mew is amazing. Always loved Golbat. To me it's a Pokemon that was cool enough without another evolution
Love how searching up "Good" brings up Gholdengho
The mewtwo stat exp is exactly my type of shit. Awesome video.
I’m going to say “normal, non-threatening number” all the time
Amazing vid Rev Run. I like the variety you’ve been putting out. Your edits never get old. Thanks.
I'm glad to see your subscriber count rising! Your content is fantastic, you deserve it!
i remember in AG people discussed using Numel (immune to thunder wave and confusion, and the only pokémon available to do so) to counter Swagkeys, only to have Swagkeys run HP water as a counter. 2 op man
He doesn't know about Hold Hands.
Always love the uploads. Looking forward to seeing Gen 9 replay vids in the future. Keep grinding bro
Brock as Lando and fuckin 21 and 24 as a Seaking and a Wormadam lmao
This is some of the best dry humor I have ever heard. Excellent video!! Also your taste in music is baller
Never felt so determined to sub to a new channel and binge watch all the stuff in there after only watching one video. Thanks, Reverend! Very cool
the phrase "lollipop dance" will never fail to make me chuckle hysterically

Appreciate all the venture bros clips. Can’t wait for the movie

omg yes reverend video. i’ve had to watch your smogon singles ou videos like 10 times over waiting for a new upload 😭🙏
To be fair, it was balanced withba different philosophy
I can't put a finger on it but your cadence of speech and editing style put together is such a joy
dude i love seeing This Guy (10:15) from the cryptids video making cameos in your other videos
Reverend being the most goated content creator on the entire website.
Seriously, I watched all of your vids multiple times

Have the sunburned Tauros replaced Krookodile as an Urshifu counter? I was just browsing pokedb and realized this also has Anger Point, also resists dark moves (water Tauros also resists Rapid Strike), has similar defenses to the crock, and most importantly is faster than Urshifu. It even has super effective stab against Single Strike. It's like it was made for this.
Your deadpan delivery has been very entertaining. Just subbed.
the joke with checking Metapod in 14U leading into goddamn "Pikacup" actually killed me, great video

Even without the top tier editing, using Venture Bros. clips is all I need to know that you're a certified cool guy. Sub well earned.
You have the driest sense of humor ever and it's fucking hilarious.
