  • Roof leak? How to find a roof leak.
Roofing nail placement is very important. If your roofing nails are put in the wrong locations, you risk leaks occurring in your roof. The roof leaks could be very costly to repair. Overtime it can cause further damage of your decking, trusses, insulation, drywall, paint, etc.

I've been watching your videos for about a year, just for the hell of it, not because I want to be a roofer, but I remember about a year ago when you were talking about this idiot who was speed nailing the shingles going as fast as he can. At the time I didn't completely understand why that was such a bad idea, I thought hell let the guy have a little fun... but now that you've shown what a nail in the wrong 8 frieking inches! can do, I can see what you were saying. Basically a decent roofer it looks like has to be thinking about where the next line is going to go as he puts the lower line in. Very cool, thanks for another great video I'll keep that in mind when i'm looking around on a roof!

It blows my mind that you’re not @ 200k subs by now. The sad truth is that literal talent & knowledge can be boring to most idiots out there.

I think anyone working on a roof needs to go to formal classes and pass written tests and physical tests laying sample roofs and require a license proving they passed just like plumbers have to. There are just too many roofers installing them wrong, even reputable companies hire people who do them wrong. I'm irritated because I found another leak lol.

I was called one time that the roof had several leaks. When I arived and looked at the roof I could tell that it was a new roof. It was the first rains of the fall and the roof was bad. The shingles were installed with only 1" to 3" of offset and the nails were placed above the laminated area where the nail line was. I told the owners what was wrong and asked who had roofed it. They would not say, but they didn't want them back on the property. I told them that the roof needed to be completely replaced. Some really baby work, so sad to see things like that.

I'd rather DIY for $4000 Materials and learn watching the pros you tube videos, and it take me 2 months, Than pay a company $16000 to knock it out in 3 days like there racing to get it done. F that!!!

So crazy roofers do this lol..I've been at it for 10+ year and I always ripped out low nails, misplaced nails and never pulled that tucking shingles over each other ever..I don't get why you wouldn't take pride in your work

that all takes time. some people see each minute as money in their pocket. why would you care about the homeowner, once they pay they are dead to you. that's the attitude on why

they need to make nail placement more dummy proof, i feel this would solve a lot of the problem...
a lot of what u showed was improper nail placement and shingle layout

nails near the shingle gaps is the most common leak i have seen. as a general rule you should be able to place your hand at the gap line and a nail should not be within the area of your hand. basically 4" on either side of that shingle gap should be nail free. this is made worse by garbage electro galv nails from people to cheap to use hots or stainless. oh, almost forgot, overdriving makes it even worse. you get little pools on those nails near the gaps that just drip drip drip all winter.

Regardless what you do, when the water runs between the butt lines the water goes left and right, next time you remove laminate shingles for a repair when it is dry out you will see the water/ dirt stains, we use Ike and they seal very well, when you lift people shingles you should always tar back down

Thanks for posting this. I've got only one leak(area) on my roof(18yrs old). It's just like what you showed with nails placed too close to the keyway. It's architectural shingles on 100% ice and water shield due to 2/12 pitch so there's no removing a shingle to replace one. They are gown to the ice and water.

The guy who did this roof might be liable because the job was not done properly. Very likely the owner did it by himself though. Excellent demonstration, THANK YOU!

Diy. You already have some experience. Get a helper, almost everything is easier in pairs. Tear offs are surprisingly fast and not real physically demanding. Do a section at a time. Underlayment is way better than it used to be and as long as you use button caps you can dry in a roof and have time for shingles. If you have lower back issues you'll need to do physical therapy, build up before hand or forget the whole thing.
I tore off half of an 18 square hip roof about 4 months ago then dried it in with ice guard that was given to me. It took about 4 hours to tear it off and stack on a pallet. 2 hours to cover it with the ice guard.
Last week I put shingles on it and it and I could only do about 2 squares a day before I was too sore to go on because of my back.
FYI, ice guard gets slick after it's on the roof for a while because the sand turns loose. I didn't know it would do that and the first 2 days were tough working from a harness.

    Great stuff.
A couple of suggestions: 1. Use your favored terminology from your region (keyway, book, whatever) with confidence. Explain what the term means once per video. Use the term with confidence.
    2. No need to bad mouth another contractor or mention them by name (you don’t, ants a liability issue ), but don’t hesitate to call out their terrible craftsmanship in a constructive way. The work I’ve seen you uncover is criminal fraud IMO. So many roofs would have probably been ok, but the installer was incredibly incompetent in very simple areas where had they done the right thing the issue would have never occurred and the job wouldn’t have cost more for the contractor.
    3. Like to see more videos (will need a cameraman) showing the repairs, methods, etc.

So how do you fix if water leaks through the nails ?

    • @GrandRoofingInc
      @GrandRoofingInc  ปีที่แล้ว +3

There's really no simple fix especially if they're all over the roof. Easiest thing to do is to caulk them or add a piece of flashing. Unless you want to replace the shingles that are damaged which could end up being the entire roof.

If you're referring to shoving a piece of flashing or felt up under, Yes you can do that just make sure it's up past the reveal. I would recommend using ice and water instead of paper. I just used a little bit of 4500 because I always have it with me.
