thank you I went up to roof since was stain in attic on outer roof sheathing. I carefull pulled up on couple shingle to examine nails under . They were RUSTED crumbled nail heads came totally off! Did not use proper galvanized nails. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!! we were wondering why leaks b/c shingles looked beautifully kept but were wavy , exactly as you said nails nails nails. You nailed it !
That’s another one, though that’s due to improper installation. If you choose a bad contractor to install your roof, then unfortunately you may run into this issue.
We actually have a family member running his own branch in the Gainesville/Alachua area. Not sure where you’re located, but we’d love to help if close by!
@@courtneyhaselberger2382 oh shoot - maybe we’ll make it to Fort Lauderdale one day! I hope you’re able to find a reliable roofing contractor in the meantime.
Skylights can be another common cause, mostly due to their flashing wearing down or to their flashing/the skylight itself not being replaced during a new roof install.
True, but you have to factor in costs, foundational support, and labor. Slate and concrete tile roofs require specialized labor, and are added weight to the foundation of your home. In other words, if your home wasn’t built to support that extra weight, it wouldn’t work. Metal is another option for a long-term, more environmentally friendly option than shingles, but again - while the price has trended down lately - metal is more expensive than shingles.

My home got hit by a hailstorm. I got a a new roof. First heavy snow fall my ceiling was leaking in two places. The roofer came back out went in the attic and said he didn't see moisture and I needed to call a general contractor. Now we had a heavy rain and it's leaking again.
I’m sorry you’ve had that experience. Have you had a third party (another roofing company, general contractor, or insurance adjuster) take a look at your new roof?
@retexroofingexteriorsllc The adjuster and the city signed off on it in the summer. Now it's leaking in wet weather. I guess I can only get someone else to fix it and send the original company the bill, and if they don't pay, I'll have to sue.
Good luck, obviously you had a roofing contractor who didn't care and sadly they are abundant. Hard to find construction workers who know and care how to do their jobs.
The amount of staining can vary widely, depending on the quality of the shingle and its copper content. Higher quality shingles have more copper content, which keep them from staining. Another factor is the amount of trees/shading - keeps the shingles from frying, but makes them more likely to stain.
Without some sort of extensive testing, it’s hard to know for sure. What’s likely happened is that there was a period of time where the asphalt shingles were a higher quality as they had to prove their worth in the marketplace. Over time, it seems the quality dropped once the product became commoditized. Now, manufacturers appear to be pushing a better quality shingle (at a higher price tag) to match new testing standards in the industry.
Do you offer free estimates? Rain today in Midlothian. Dry attic, but there’s a dripping sound in my laundry room wall following tonight’s rain storm. Please advise. Thank you!
I have contacted all of the roofers in my smallish city of 35K regarding my roof leak and none of the have even gotten back to me. It’s been over 3 weeks and winter is coming. So frustrating. Any suggestions?
Hi Tom, so sorry to hear that - definitely frustrating! One idea you may want to try is contacting a roofing supply company (such as ABC, Superior - whoever the distributors are locally) to see if they have any roofing contractors they recommend. I hope you're able to have someone fix your roof before winter arrives!
I got a old house I keep fixing it myself insurance don’t care they are out for there self. People ought to learn to fix there own stuff. I am retiring soon I’ll probably put a whole new roof on it
It's impressive that you're so handy! While I wish you the best, I would like to reiterate that we wouldn't recommend DIY-ing your roof replacement unless you are highly skilled, have installed a roof properly before, and know exactly what you're doing.
Wish you mentioned using junky plastic pipe flange flashing. That’s what we have, and they’re horrible!! Had to tar every single one to stop leaks, and my roof is only 3 years old.
That’d fall under pipe collars, but yikes - sorry you had to deal with those! The pipe collars we use typically last 10-15 years before they start breaking down.
I hired J &G Exteriors in West Allis Wisconsin. They put on a new roof and didn't properly flash anything and did not install gutter aprons!! My roof leaks worse now than it did before the reroofing! You hire these people and you're not going to be happy with the result. FYI!
Ha ha yes Sears and home Depot used to sub out to junkies and drunk crews in BC , total filthy work. Most commonly cause of roof leaks is shady roofers. Crappy work. All 5 issues here plus many many more. Too many shady roofers
While this video is directed primarily at asphalt shingle roofs, these are still the most common areas for roof leaks for metal roofs as it’s anywhere the roof meets “non-roof.” It also depends on the type of metal roof you have. Ribbed metal roofs sometimes have issues with the gaskets around the nails wearing down. In any case, I’d recommend calling a licensed and insured roofing company to assess your roof.
Boats are waterproof right? Most are now made out of fiberglass right? So, why don't people make their roof's with waterproof fiberglass? Would last longer as well. Because, most boats decking's hardly ever leek, and they are heavily used. Fiberglass pools are long lasting waterproof tested. Fiberglass is strong and can take extreme weather and sunshine. Most likely people just follow, never thinking outside the box or on their own.
Fibre glass roofs have been a thing here in the UK for quite some years now. It's a temperamental system but done correctly its a good choice especially for flat roofs
Fiberglass cracks too easy. I see decks here in BC after deep cold they crack at pressure points as well .fiberglass on roofs is not flexible enough to withstand wear and tear
Fiberglass also cracks especially in cold temperatures. Fiberglass has its pros and cons. Personally I likes the EPDM shingles. They do not crack like fiberglass shingles. Do a slam test on a cold day. Slam down a bundle of shingles and see how how many crack. Fiberglass is weak in many ways.
We don't recommend DIY-ing your roof replacement -we had to go through specific training and become licensed in our field to properly install roofs. Even if we put a video together showing how to do it, we wouldn't want to in some way be responsible for someone installing their roof wrong or getting injured in the process.
First of all if a branch goes through the roof obviously you need a repair most homeowners we'll see some sort of debris or stick or branch in the roof that may have caused that problem second of all gatters i would never never recommend for any house......
Thanks for commenting! It sounds like you've dealt with some improperly installed gutters. When installed correctly, gutters should help, not hinder, a home by diverting water away from its foundation. As for the tree branch comment, you're right - however some homeowners can't see on top of their roofs, so they only find out if there's storm damage when they notice water spots or notice a dripping sound, so we've included that as one of the most-common causes.
Sorry to upset you - while you’re right in that we’re focused here on asphalt shingle roofs, these are still the most common causes of roof leaks. We will consider making videos in the future pinpointing common roof leaks per roof type. Have a great day!

Shingles are a cheaper way to roof .But it has great limitations. Long term a concrete tiled roof or slate roof are the way to go .
