  • It’s just been discontinued, it’s rarer than snake’s feet and it costs over $100,000. It’s the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711, so of course it’s been copied-and you’ll struggle to tell the difference. Here’s why...

      When conducting a "Real vs Fake" comparison video, viewers will find it more beneficial to feature comparable dials (referring to the dial variations where the authentic is a pre-Basel 2018 dial). Now all the folks with authentic 2018+ 5711s that weren't purchased directly through boutique or AD are worried. See comments below from folks calling out the obvious dial difference that wasn't discussed in the video.

I'd refuse to sponsor companies such as these and others who have done bad stuff ethically in the past, and thus I'd like to support smaller organisations in foreign lands who struggle to survive and have to do this which isn't really unethical in the grand scheme of things when they are just replicating a watch from companies who charge absurd prices for the elite. The most successful and pragmatic individuals do not flaunt their wealth nor wear the greatest items, yet they are humble in their doings and many wear fakes in order to get the same thing. If Brands like Rolex, PP and AP stop all these artificial supply shortage by not withholding inventory and people can actually get one at retail price, all these wouldn’t happen
    Imagine someone saving up for his grail AP, PP or Rolex, only to literally get said in the face by the AD, “gtfo, you’re not our priority customer”, and finding out you have to pay 3x the money you saved to obtain it from the Secondary market.
    I’m not saying go get a rep, but then the appeal of a replica becomes more obvious. You wanted that look but you couldn’t get it from retail and prices in the secondary market are crazy.

    • @AntonioBenetti
      @AntonioBenetti 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      This watches are a luxury good, nobody gets killed because there's a shortage of them, and people who can afford them are happier if there is a shortage because it makes it even more luxurious and sought-after; the artificial shortage is literally the only reason why PP, AP and all these other brands didn't go bankrupt in the 70s during the quartz crisis, without it nobody could buy these watches because they wouldn't even exist anymore.
      If you are saving up to buy one of this watches but can't afford to be a priority customer, it's obvious that you are not in the financial position to be buying a watch like that, these are made for people who have so much money they can throw them out the window, they don't care if somebody can't get their grail watch because the less people can buy their watches the more the second hand prices go up and thus the more noise they make, and being talked about is the most important thing for a luxury brand.
      Of course you are right in saying that this can be seen as a problem by people who want the look but can't get it, and this as you said makes the replica more appealing, but probably the type of person that buy replica wouldn't buy a real PP even if they had the money, if you go on the RepTime reddit, you can see that a lot of people who buy replica watches DO have the money to buy a real watch (they often have yatches, or luxury cars), they just choose not to. At the end of the day, having a watch can mean a lot of things to a person, I'm not the type of guy who'd buy a replica because it just woulnd't feel right for me from a moral prospective, if a person doesn't care about the morals (which I'm not saying is a bad thing, just another opinion) and just wants the look, they will choose to buy the cheaper version almost all the time, even if it costed only a couple of thousant less.

      Actually they would not be anything close to what they are. They would all be Omegas - producing watches with a very high horological value, but targeting the massmarket.
      With Rolex, AP and PP, a lot of discontinued models feel like limited editions, although they aren't and I think that is beautiful and what makes them what they are.

    The next focus of micromachining will likely be on fine finishing of movements and to a lesser degree cases, dial etc (though for day to day purposes that seems to be pretty advanced already): that is the labor intensive process that so far machines are not able to replicate even individually, let alone scale. Patek Phillipe craftsmen are indeed willing to simply spend the extra time to perfect every tiny surface of the movement, case, dial, hands...every part of the watch seems perfect at magnification levels that make even a genuine Rolex seem like a 1995 Chinese knockoff. As soon as that can be automated at scale - assuming it can - then the fun begins.

    To your argument on buying a fake having an impact on the original company, perhaps a little bit of that is a good thing in this case. It is clearly possible to build, say, 20% of the watch for 1% of the money, and perhaps these watches would present a welcome downward pressure on the prices of the real ones. I'm not saying I personally hold these views, but maybe they're worth a thought. There's a point at which pricing becomes so ridiculous that it is maddening, even for someone like myself who doesn't like the design of the Nautilus at all.

    What this video really exposes is the gross overpricing for Swiss luxury watches. If others can make virtually the same thing and turn a profit at $1,000 then Patek and others are simply charging for their name; which is fine, that's how 'Luxury' works. But.....you know. Stop lying about it. We get it.

      Only 60% of the _value_ of the watch comes from Switzerland and that includes marketing and research & development. That means most of the watch is made overseas and then assembled in Switzerland like a model kit. People have fallen very hard for the Swiss' luxury watch marketing.

  • @TheBestOfAll2010
    @TheBestOfAll2010 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Seems pretty straightforward to me. There is no harm to be done to the original company since they no longer produce the watch and any money made from it would go directly to third parties. The only question left to be answered is:
    Are the differences worth the extra 99000 and the risk of getting a more convincing fake either way?
    Buying it for 1000 would leave no doubt that it is fake but if it's a very convincing fake that can only be told apart from an original in the presence of an original... Does it even matter any more?

      @@danielKravtsov look at Reptime and RWI forums as a start. I won't go into more detail as it is a faux pas to say too much in the "public domain" because the high profile does make it easier for manufacturers and authorities to note which factories to target just from names. They can and probably do perform this sort of research anyway but it's even been mentioned here. It takes maybe 10+ hours to forge a semi decent understanding of that ecosystem if you already have a very deep and laterally varied understanding of watches in general. I bet I know more about watches than 99% of the "purists" who know shit all about the actual mechanisms and how every bit is made and machined. Reps offer an aesthetic gateway into the world of "luxury" watches. They are mechanical toys but honestly no different than the deeper hedonism and delusion of these purists. They don't understand watches, they don't understand money... sometimes they have a bit of it though. I am confident plenty more rep buyers are actually wealthier if you remove the teenagers trying to flex.

    • @fredhal8681
      @fredhal8681 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      oh and btw MANY people who own genuine watches also own plenty of high end reps. They are beginning to become that "worth it". In fact plenty more in the entire watch community who venture into reps end up staying almost exclusively in the reps after they dip their toes in.
      I will warn you though. It helps if you are at least semi capable at doing mods and repairs. That's an area reps simply cannot match genuines in - quality control. You get some perfect ones out of the box, sometimes you get minor misalignments which can be a 2 minute or 2 hour fix depending on the issue and how capable you are with actual watchmaking. It's a fun hobby and rewarding in a way genuine pieces will never satisfy. Both are an endless chase because at the heart, it is empty hedonism. You cannot stop unless you manage to see these things for what they are.
      If you aren't capable, you need a brilliant watchmaker who is willing to work on replicas. There are plenty of pitfalls with reps! Even buying them is a pain in the ass as I'm sure this channel understands unless they sourced it from someone who is reselling their replica for 2x the price they paid.

      It's just not quite the same. With paintings, there only exists one original, and so it's accepted that in order for more than one person to enjoy it, you have to have copies, and the original must be protected at all costs. But, with luxury watches, even a "genuine" is usually a copy: one of tens, hundreds, or even thousands. Sure, you should treat it with respect, but it's okay if it gets some scratches when you use it as it was designed for.
