If he ever gets his hands on an original, he needs to make a retro style bad gear episode set in the mid 80s about the TB 303 (Kind of interesting how the perception of gear can change over time)
@@AudioPilz I was literally going to comment "Do the 303!" I get the appeal, but it's such a limited bit of kit, I've never been able to justify buying any of the clones even at
Someone told me years ago that I shouldn’t enjoy that record because it’s “culturally ambiguous” of course it was a white guy who grew up in suburbia telling me this.
@@foansmusic5603 If they meant that it was "cultural appropriation" I think I speak for most Americans when I say that anyone who wants Disco can have it.
I built my first X0XBox about a year before the Bass Bot was released. At the time the kit was the only way to get that authentic TB sound without selling a body organ and I probably put around 20 hours into painstakingly building it up. The cost of the kit plus my labour would probably come to around the same as buying one of these off the shelf. My ears can’t tell a difference between the two, not that TH-cam audio is exactly master quality, but that and the 303 silver box looks made me wonder if the kit was worth it for the time spent building it. And the answer is hell yeah it was worth it, might not look as cool but this isn’t a fashion parade and mine’s built to OCD standards. As the X0X and original TB essentially share the same schematic there is something particularly cool you can do both. There’s an internal preset pot that acts as a linearity control, separate to the actual tuning and it’s supposed to be adjusted so an octave up is exactly twice the frequency of a particular note. If it’s not set absolutely correctly the desired notes become increasingly detuned the further away from the centre you get. And that my friends is a beautiful thing when you want to embark upon a wigged-out AFX-style acid head-f**k. Lovely.
Roland: "Alright, so you just enter your bassline here, and that'll be perfect for weddings and shows!" Ravers: *turn the resonance up* "Hey man, this is wack, let me get my acid." Roland: "No, that's not how you're supposed to play the game!"
Great video. I had to double take when you showed a clip of my comparison, I had forgotten about that entirely. Great video as always and the tunes you made with it sound great!
I worked in a music store in the late 80s and early 90s. We had a ton of the original TB-303s in stock, used, and cheap. Wish I had appreciated their use at that time :P
They were blowing out 909s and other boxes at Rogue Music in NY, even the hallway was stacked. Stupidly I let the sales guy talk me into buying a 505 over the much cooler looking 909 ( had never heard one at that time ) because it "sounds like real drums".
Need for Speed 4 : HIgh Stakes (in the late 90:s) was full of 303-laden music of this type! So many racing games with great music on them (both menu and in-game racing). And the Wipeout 2097 is also a classic with more of a mixed kind of electronic music (lots of Big Beat)!
I am amazed at how much bad gear you review that I own/have owned... -303 clones deserve a league/vote off of their own. For me the og Cyclone tt 303 sounds so good it makes me question the fabric of reality.
REDLINE FINALLY MAKES AN APPEARANCE!!! Although it very much fits more breakcore vibes, just the fact that you used the footage will always put a huge smile on my face :)
I built my own X0Xb0x, and it's really good! I bought extra transistors and picked whichever ones sounded best in it. The manufacturing variability in transistors (basically, the BJT's gain-bandwidth product) probably does explain why different units seem to sound different.
There are never enough TB-303 clones and the Cyclone analog synth, which I had seen around the net, sounds mighty nice here. That said, Roland was indeed wise to update the TB-03 UI for an alternate to the traditional 303 workflow. As a side note, I confess I had held off buying the J-6 until I watched your episode, which has worked out nicely, actually. I hope more instruments come your way to review!

I used to own three individual 303 units, over different time periods. Today, I got a TD-3 I rarely use, but having tweaked the insides it is as spot on as I'd not spend tens of thousands of euros on, shall we say...
IIRC the x0xb0x I bought was from the guys who became Cyclone Analogic shortly after. It used transistors from the last 303s built and other components out of spec with the usual X0X builds of the day. Still sounds bloody nice and my best 303 hardware clone (I have many lol)
The Finale is pretty amazing. I bought one to try and hold off on the demise of my primary TB-303 - except it broke in record time, but now I use TWO Modified Uli Bass Lines - yellow too for extra BASS. They helped retire my 303s which are now in my Memorial CS80 and Jupiter 8 Fund.

@@shaft9000 The 777 is GREAT!! I would agree with everything here. What I would say though, is that if you want THE 303 sound, there are better ways to get it. Another great episode Florian. Never seen one of these or the Mk 2 (or even a Devil Fish) in the wild, down under. I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of squelchy voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
@@AudioPilz Thank you for the consistently great content! Now that I've watched the video (it rules), I do have a question though. What is it about the square waves on the other 303 clones you don't like?
Outside of guitars, I'm a little hard-pressed to think of a single synth with as many copies/clones as Roland's TB-303. Also, I think it's missed opportunity that you didn't save this video for a March 3rd release date. :)
used to use a real 303 a lot, to drive a proper synth (moog rogue), & learned to program its song-mode (it gets easier if you write it all out on paper first, & enter the patterns with the sound turned down, otherwise it insists on playing you what's already in the location you're about to write to, which is infuriating). best trick was taking the batteries out for a few minutes & letting its mind get scrambled, then put the batteries back in & have fun editing the messed up random patterns it's now filled itself with.
I'd love to see a video or two about your favorite gear, that gear that you appear to be using in addition to the actual "bad gear" more than half of the time, in particular the Arturia Beatmaster Pro (?) and the black square thing with the green edges from Roland . Both are used in this video around 6:10
I own TT-303 MK2. There is one aspect that makes it very useful in my workflow - ability to punch in notes, accents and legatos in real time, like on Korg Volca bass. Soundwise, I prefer Behringer TD-3, which I control with MPC One sequencer (again, I use the same method to enter notes). Great video, as usual. If you could only keep memes for a second longer, they scroll too fast, before I had a chance to read them.
TT-303 mk1, mk2 and Avalon TB-303 they sound even better than the original itself!) It seems to me that people who say that they sound bad understand little
HA, another great vid. We just bought a tt303 last year. Bloody love it. Always wanted a real 303 and this one is as close as I will ever get. We have 2 other 303 boxes but this one is the real deal. So many wicked features on it as well. Really fun and authentic box. If you look long enough there are a few good deals out there. I waited for about 3 years for a decent priced one. Keep the fun vid's coming. Aways crack me up. x
I picked up the Mk2, and I am so glad. It's the ONLY 303 clone that has even remotely decent midi implementation. Every other model has MIDI as an afterthought
@@AudioPilz You could make some kind of compilation with several styles. Like Glitch Acid, Deep Acid, Gangsta Acid, Gospel Acid and (of course!) Technical Death Acid.
I am a bad person(and a cheapskate), so I use the D16 Phosycon vst, and an ATC 1 for acidfartness-a-gogo. The TB3 is still the funkiest of the emulations, but they're all selling into a mythical 1990s acid bleepbloop nostalgia kick, rather than a desire to break new ground with original chooms. Good target practice for Bad Gear Moby, though.
With the abundance of clones and the peak resurgence in the early zero years, I feel like 303s are pretty stale now… How about that Redline though! Pretty damn good movie.
I wonder if this channel will ever feature the Rebirth 338 softsynth of late '96? I remember this was a sensation at the time, where did 25+ years go?!
I member when I was really nerding out about acid in my 20s and ordered the x0xb0x and soldered it together myself. Had fun making patterns and twisting knobs once in a while but never used it in anything so I sold it to someone I knew would get more use from it. Might buy this for random knob twidling, sounds good enough. :D Edit: for once i recognized where you pulled some of the clips from. Redline fuck yeah.
love it. i got a future retro 777 many years ago and it is quite excellent for acid. can go way beyond a basic 303. but since i got the behringer td-3 i don't think i've turned it on once. turns out i just want that classic acid sound most of the time. i also borrowed a td-3-mo and that's pretty good too, but i think the non-modded one wins.
Awesome, I just got one of the rainbow colored, super-authentic TB-303 clones in the mail today. It's my first synth an I blame you AudioPilz for the expenses that are to come. 😅
To be honest: i could buy a TB-303 (from a friend who wants to sell his), but on the other hand i got my TT-303 Mark I, two RE-303s and a TD-3 AM, so i guess i stick with them. All of them do have their right of existence and are also fun to play with (if you like the 303-Sequencer). Plus: Only real experts (might) be able tell the difference. If you done the work correctly, no "ordinary audience" will be able to tell them apart from the "real deal". There is really (in my oppinion) only one chance to tell: if you use them without effects.
I think it depends more on the kind of sounds you want to get out of it. It either has the squelch or it doesnt. TT has it, mk2 not so much (i compared them extensively). Acid connoisseurs will always spot a flat and boring sounding squelch, many clones dont get into "grainy, fallin apart" type of resonance. Thats where tt shines.

5:03 the acid line is late
edit: and the 2nd jam! If you pulled the acid line back 5-10 ms it would be much better
Yeah, midi timing of that thing is atrocious and often unpredictable
I love it when you use anime clips for your final jams, and Redline is a modern classic.
Recommendations for future episodes, assuming you haven't used them before: Riding Bean, Gunsmith Cats, Roujin-Z, Venus Wars, All-Purpose Cultural Catgirl Nuku Nuku
Great suggestions, thanks!!!
Given its history, the 303 is the OG Bad Gear (alongside the 808 & 909, of course).
True that!
Absolutely loved the tunes you created for this video..... gorgeous acid toonzzzz 🤩
Had me bopping like the old days, despite the arthritis 😬
Thanks!❤️❤️❤️
Man that 2nd sample song deserves to be a whole track.
Thank you!!! Extended jams and full tracks as usual on Patreon (shameless plug)
Schrödinger's Bad Gear. It is and isn't about the TB-303 at the same time.
True that!!!
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of squelchy voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
That's not a Moog. That's a Bass Station.
😂 genius!!
❤
This is the first time I've ever given a thumbs up to a video before even watching it just because the thumbnail was great.
Thank you so much!!!
@@AudioPilz Thank you for the consistently great content! Now that I've watched the video (it rules), I do have a question though. What is it about the square waves on the other 303 clones you don't like?
Babe, babe wake up! Florian just released a new episode of BadGear.
Breakfast is ready;)
Plot twist: Florian was babe all along
And the pentagon has been hit babe
Hahaha, that picture with Uli pressed up against the window pane … 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
when the intro song is very obviously made with the thing.
Yeah, the sonic fingerprint is strong!
I ❤ my TT303 mk2. Finaly one of my synth got mentioned on the best gear show on YT.
😀😀😀
Outside of guitars, I'm a little hard-pressed to think of a single synth with as many copies/clones as Roland's TB-303.
Also, I think it's missed opportunity that you didn't save this video for a March 3rd release date. :)
Let's see if I can find another TB clone for March;)
used to use a real 303 a lot, to drive a proper synth (moog rogue), & learned to program its song-mode (it gets easier if you write it all out on paper first, & enter the patterns with the sound turned down, otherwise it insists on playing you what's already in the location you're about to write to, which is infuriating).
best trick was taking the batteries out for a few minutes & letting its mind get scrambled, then put the batteries back in & have fun editing the messed up random patterns it's now filled itself with.
The paper method really helps!
I'd love to see a video or two about your favorite gear, that gear that you appear to be using in addition to the actual "bad gear" more than half of the time, in particular the Arturia Beatmaster Pro (?) and the black square thing with the green edges from Roland . Both are used in this video around 6:10
Beatstep Pro, Roland TB-3, Jomox Airbase and Elektron Digitakt are probably the most-used pieces of gear I own! Great idea!!!
@@AudioPilzdo it do it do it
I own TT-303 MK2.
One does not simply watch Bad Gear without a finger on the spacebar ☝
@@afxcs574 Having to pause a video to read a meme is like asking comedian on a stage to repeat a joke.
Thank you!!!
TT-303 mk1, mk2 and Avalon TB-303 they sound even better than the original itself!) It seems to me that people who say that they sound bad understand little
Super interested in the Avalon!
Gorgeous device, unfortunately very rare! (
I always look forward to the vocoder shoutout
😀😀😀
Can't wait for the Minimoog, CS80, OB-XA and Prophet 5 episodes
Yeah, the P5 filter is a steppy nightmare;)
Was expecting the TD-3 👀
Damn, I love Uli 😂
HA, another great vid. We just bought a tt303 last year. Bloody love it. Always wanted a real 303 and this one is as close as I will ever get. We have 2 other 303 boxes but this one is the real deal. So many wicked features on it as well. Really fun and authentic box. If you look long enough there are a few good deals out there. I waited for about 3 years for a decent priced one. Keep the fun vid's coming. Aways crack me up. x
Thank you!!!
Seems like a pretty nice clone if you ask me.
Definitely feels like operating a synth from 1981;)
Cool acidic show and jams this Friday! Are we heading toward Volca Bass? All the best and have a great weekend!
Have a nice weekend!!! The Volca Bass won't be able to escape;)
Not just any AMV source material, but Redline!!
❤️❤️❤️Redline❤️❤️❤️
Anyone else vote for the memes to last longer? They are too fast! We want the memes! We want the memes! Say it with me!
But an episode would be half an hour then and it would be super boring;)
@@AudioPilz I reluctantly understand. Thank you for these weekly masterpieces
Nahhh. The length is good. It's more fun having to scrub back or kind of half get it. Memes aren't meant for pondering imho
I picked up the Mk2, and I am so glad. It's the ONLY 303 clone that has even remotely decent midi implementation. Every other model has MIDI as an afterthought
Nice!
We are all waiting for a full length acid house album from you.
Thanks! Should i release it before or after the minimal techno and DnB album?;)
@@AudioPilz You could make some kind of compilation with several styles. Like Glitch Acid, Deep Acid, Gangsta Acid, Gospel Acid and (of course!) Technical Death Acid.
@@AudioPilz How about a boxed set?
Yes!!! my main box gets its own little moment of glory. Thanks man X
Nice! Thank you!
I stay having to rewind and keep my finger ready to pause with Bad Gear videos due to all the great, yet speedy memes!
That's the way to watch these;)
I have one of the newer versions. It doesn’t look like the old ones but it’s still kicks ass.
Nice one!!!
I love my Bassbot, you’d have to prise it from my cold dead hands. Great episode as always and loving the last jam 🫠
Thank you!!!
❤️❤️❤️
That track, which was used with the visuals of the Anime Redline, sound really dope.
Thank you!!!
With the abundance of clones and the peak resurgence in the early zero years, I feel like 303s are pretty stale now… How about that Redline though! Pretty damn good movie.
Such a great movie!!!
I wonder if this channel will ever feature the Rebirth 338 softsynth of late '96? I remember this was a sensation at the time, where did 25+ years go?!
I tried to find enough hate and it seems like EVERYBODY loves it;)
@@AudioPilz OMG the thing is truely awful! What's wrong with people?!
Edit: for once i recognized where you pulled some of the clips from. Redline fuck yeah.
Redline!!!
Viper Higgins popping up at 1:36 is like a clash of worlds for me.
😀😀😀
I noticed that R oland with the flashy lights is your go to . We spoiled synth bratz but we deserve z best amigo. Thanks 4 your entertainment
Thanks for watching!!!❤️❤️❤️
Papa always said “if you don’t like a synth’s sequencer, bring your own” aha
Wise words!!!
The TT303 v2 sequencer and instaDJ is light years ahead of the others.
👍
love it. i got a future retro 777 many years ago and it is quite excellent for acid. can go way beyond a basic 303. but since i got the behringer td-3 i don't think i've turned it on once. turns out i just want that classic acid sound most of the time. i also borrowed a td-3-mo and that's pretty good too, but i think the non-modded one wins.
Yeah, Uli really changed the game
I like that the TT parts were midrange in the last track and something else was doing the actual bass which was a cleaner sound
That was the TT too;)
@@AudioPilz Interesting, great track as usual
You killed the demonstration!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you so much!!!
Awesome, I just got one of the rainbow colored, super-authentic TB-303 clones in the mail today. It's my first synth an I blame you AudioPilz for the expenses that are to come. 😅
Thanks! You will never financially recover from this;)
Please excuse my stupid grin at the last gag with the TB3. Nice one 😁
Thanks!!!
I've lurked on your videos for a while now. Today I subbed. No particular reason, but thanks for the entertaining vids!
Thank you so much! Stick around!!!
@@AudioPilz Happy to! =)
A bloke called Norman told me everyone needs one of these.
A wise man!!!
The finale jam is a beauty! Finish it and release it!
Thanks!!! There's a full version available on my Patreon (shameless plug;)
Sung along to the intro tune but with the repeated lyric “squelch” and “squelchy” (ie “squelchy squelchy squelch squelch”)
Lol😂😂😂
@@AudioPilz …squelch squelch SQUELCH!
Then the episode begins
Goodness, That super Tb…Copy/Paste jam dropped me hard into a bushdoof flashback, I’m not sure how I feel about that.
;)
I need a folder full of the memes used in each episode, always such high quality!
Thank you!!!
I really LOVE the Patreon Vocoder Shoutout and I don't know why 😁
😀😀😀
Gorgeous sounding, extremely fragile.
Both of my MK1's have very drifty VCOs and getting them repaired is a nightmare.
Yeah, they definitely feel like a budget synth from 1981
Thank you for bringing TTs into this show!!!
It's more like a crypto investment;)
I think it depends more on the kind of sounds you want to get
out of it. It either has the squelch or it doesnt. TT has it, mk2 not so much (i compared them extensively). Acid connoisseurs will always spot a flat and boring sounding squelch, many clones dont get into "grainy, fallin apart" type of resonance. Thats where tt shines.
Nick expecting PWM in a SAW movie :D just brilliant
😀😀😀
