Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about Moog Little Phatty. Did this modern take on the classic Moog formula and one of the last instruments Robert Arthur Moog worked on age well? Can the analog synth engine be tamed with the UI of a MicroKorg? Does it live up to the legacy of masterpieces like the Minimoog Model D or other synthesizers created by the legendary Bob Moog?

Brutal, but fair. My LP Stage II is the only synth I've never even thought of getting rid of, but it definitely has its limitations. Still, when you need a thick bass or lead tone that completely hogs the mix and cuts through everything around it, the LP is a killer.

I've had one of the early Tributes for like 15+ yrs now. It's good for taking to jams. Especially funky jams.
Yeah, the main problem in studio is trying to use it for everything in a track, so as an 'only analog synth' for novices it's rather nutters and limited/frustrating once the 'wow I have a Moog!' feeling levels off.

Exactly. I have it routed thru an Avalon U5 and it kills bass. That's all I use it for. Menu diving for the arpeggiator?? Yeah... no way. I haven't had any issue with the rubber deteriorating. I had the CV/Gate Out mod added at the factory... makes a killer 5U controller thanks to the big "Output On/Off" button.

I don't know if this was the intended audience when these were designed, but I remember when they came out, tour musicians were ALL about these. For rock bands playing out live who wanted Moog leads, but the ability to save and recall patches, and something sturdy and built like a tank...... These were a godsend.

The thing thats unusual about Little Phattys is that the oscillator level has a big impact on tone and how the envelopes behave. It will also affect how much overdrive occurs. If you keep the osc level low the envelopes have a more pronouced effect and everything behaves in a more predictable way. On other Moogs and most other synths this is not something you really have to consider as much. Most people just crank the osc level and then find this one awkward to mix or oddly untweakable. Its similar to how the VCA level affects the envelopes on Yamaha CS synths

While I certainly agree with the limitations and frustrating elements of its design (particularly the need to dive into menus often), man does it sound good to me. I'm not sure how anyone can hear the recordings you made in this video and not feel like, despite its quirks, this thing makes incredible sound.

@@AudioPilz I recently bought a phatty off reverb… in toxic green lighting too, 1of 30 ever made. It took some getting used to the controls, but immediately I saw it was far simpler to use than my SUB 25. It took a bit of tweaking and understanding the menu toggle on the phatty , but once I did, I was able to find a solid baseline to start patching with. And after some more tweaking… boom… I found exactly what I was looking for in terms of a lead synth sound
The little phatty blows the SUB 25 and 37s doors all day. Hell… if it’s good enough for Geddy Lee…

Love the video Florian. While the Stage II didn't come with it, there was also a CV Out mod that Moog would sell you (one of the models came with the modification installed, I beleive). I had the Stage II as well, and ordered the CV Out Mod for, if I remember correctly, around $100 (in 2012). It came with a new panel for the right side of the unit, and was mostly connecting wire harnesses- not too difficult. It had 5 CV outs- Gate, Pitch, Mod Bus, Vol Env & Filter Env. Noise was routable to the Mod Bus out. I used it for basic CV control with the rest of my setup- a Moog MP-201 Multipedal, Moog CP-251 Control Processor, a Moogerfooger MF-104SD Super Delay, an EHX Bi-Filter and a Dave Smith Tempest. The MP-201 was really something- sadly it doesn't bleep or bloop so I don't expect to see it on here. EHX Bi-Filter was pretty cool, too- a rack mount EHX product, which was a nicer Mu-Tron III. The Little Phatty definitely locks you into a certain sound. Which can be a good thing, I suppose- as limitations do breed creativity. But damn if those were the sounds you wanted/needed, it had no end to the funky drip. It was all very Moog of the late 2000s, early 2010s- a company at a crossroads, not knowing quite where to go next- but with an amazing pedigree and excellent engineering (the UX/UI was not so great)- a company lost among the Korgs, Access and Waldorfs- looking for some kind of inspiration or direction. Kind of like how our entire culture felt for the first 15 years of the new millenium. So sad I that I had to sell it all of it when I got laid off. Music is nice, but eating and not getting evicted is just a little bit nicer...

Hahahah as always a very nice video! and you allmost had me struggling but then I remembered that most of those limitations are part of its superpower. As I stopped appreciating analogue synthesizers for their versatility and started adding a synthesizer to my studio only if it has its very own gap to fill with a strong enough character to not overlap too much with other models, it becomes high value to know what synth is a go to for certain tasks in productions. In this case and context of the design you understand how precisely moog nailed this misson of creating a sturdy stage bass and lead machine in the early 2000s that cuts through the mix with an easy access filter overload sound. ❤

Haha! Another one of mine…… and yes, in the present context, this synth is a bad gear synth in many ways! No question about that….but…..here’s where our beloved and highly venerable Florian is reviewing the pasta when it’s spaetzle….The phatty comes in the guise of a synth, but it is really more a musical instrument for players rather than producers. It’s a bit like reviewing a Fender Stratocaster (also very limited technically speaking!). The phatty makes a heck of a lot of sense on stage with a band making noise around you, and a heck of alot of sense if you are a soloist (have a look at Jordan Rudess’s youtube demos of little phatty octave jumping and glide). Terrible synthesiser, lovely musical instrument! And that space funk jam was massive!!!

At the time it was one of the cheapest and most accessible way to get some Moog ladder filter goodness. While not letting you adjust resonance and cutoff at the same time was a bit of a fail, it was a decent synth for its time. Currently a happy owner of an SE-02, but a used LP was a strong candidate while I was shopping for an affordable Moog-style synth.

Great fun video that must have been a lot of work, as usual. It's been mentioned before but the ultimate eargasm for synth nerds would be a video sequencing all the "little intro tunes" with the name of the synth in use, followed with teh same thing for the first and second jams. That would be a cool way to choose a synth. You could even add all the newly reviewed synths to the post each year

It is a very cool underrated synth, with a fantastic basic sound. I use it on stage as a replacement of my MiniMoog which I keep in my studio. Compared to for instance a Sub37 it has a far brighter sound. Sub37 is great for bass, but with lead sounds, the Little Phatty is much smoother in sound. Of course... all a matter of taste. I replaced the sticky side panels today with Walnote panels and if I would improve this synth, the only thing I would do is add a 2nd modulation target option. With Sync sounds it is cool to use the Envelope to change the pitch of the synced oscillator. But for this, you have to keep the Mod.Wheel open and then there is no way to use the LFO for pitch modulation by using the ModWheel.
But taking the MiniMoog in mind, this one offers preset memory and some additional features. Is it fully sounding the same as my MiniMoog? No... but it is getting very close, and in the music hard to hear the difference. My2Cent
