    I have been binge watching your videos after breaking my ankle- avulsion fracture lateral malleolus. The worst part was the terrible stirrup splint from the ER. Once I was able to get the boot (10 days after ER), I was walking with the boot about 14 days after injury. Thanks for your great videos! They have kept me entertained and educated over the last few weeks

    Ha,ha,ha Docs- I watched this immediately upon being notified! I fell and broke both my ankles two years ago at a restaurant ( no alcohol had been consumed!) I was carted away in an ambulance and was in shock but not too much pain. You missed the two immediate indicaters that I had that all was not well ( besides the total inability to stand back up) - both ankles swelled up immediately and became violently discoloured. Glad to say I have made a good recovery and the months of recuperation then prepared me to handle the Covid - 19 lockdown earlier this year!

    I missed the bottom step on my way down the stairs in the faint dawn light last year. Broke the fibula in two. It was a clean break, no misalignment but the orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital gave me the choice of a boot or the surgery (ORIF?) (metal bracket connecting the two, and I chose the surgery, as it meant faster healing. What a mistake! Firstly, it was expensive; secondly, it left me with a giant scar that frightens children; thirdly, I was told to go to physio and I did, and followed the exercise regime but wasn't told how long I had to keep doing the exercises, so I only did them for a month, as everything felt strong. 18 months later, I can't walk more than half a mile without the ankle swelling up, and it's still not easy walking downstairs. Some days it still hurts but not often & not much. My GP says I should get the metal bracket out if I want full range of motion. I was surprised - wasn't it put in there to fix the break? How could it be causing me a limited life? If that's expected, shouldn't that be mentioned when being given the choice of surgery?

      Hi Margaret. Thanks for sharing your story. Sometimes hardware can limit function but it is necessary to hold the bone in place while it is healing. Once the bone is healed, it can be removed but does not have to be removed. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    Thanks Docs, great to see you both. I fractured my right ankle back in 2010. I have a long history of twists/sprains. On this occasion, I stood up before my stop to descend the stairs on a bus, the driver braked suddenly, throwing me backwards. I didn’t fall, as my grip was good. So how come I fractured my tibia what sort of fracture was this please. I was 6 weeks in a plaster cast and another 4 in a boot when I could partially weight bear? It was excruciating pain. Thank you. ☺️

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Deborah. So it is hard to say what kind of fracture you had. The bump on the inside of your ankle - the medial malleolus - is actually part of your tibia. That may have been it. All fractures are different and related to how the impact was taken on your bone. Best of luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    Hi Doc Weening and Doc ZalZal I broke my left ankle last August. I had agreed to look after a rather large dog so this couple could attend a wedding. I had 5 dogs at the time , so having another wasn’t a big deal. Plus I wasn’t keeping it. The day started off great. Then it went down hill rather quickly. I tripped on a mat that was between my kitchen and boot room. As I tripped, I attempted to stop myself from going through the glass . That didn’t happen cause I only took 9 panels out, twisted the metal between the glass and now had 3 dogs on either side. Thank goodness I trained them to Stop. Fast forward to 7 pm. The mess of glass had been cleaned, now taking two dogs out back to play some ball. That didn’t happen simply because the dogs started chasing each other around, and within seconds I was hit from behind by the dog who wasn’t mine. The force sent me flying and somehow I ended up taking the dog down with me. I heard a “snap” and first thought I broke the dogs ribs. I attempted to get up but nope, that wasn’t an option. I’m calling for my husband to grab the dog but it’s not been trained for collar grab or basically to listen. That dog not only stepped on my break once, he did it a second time and my pain threshold hit the roof. Thankfully I have great neighbours, fast acting husband, and dogs who listen. My friend came over and took the extra dog home with her as we headed to the hospital. The break was clearly evident, a fancy boot fitted and home we went the break took 5 months to heal which was really tight. I wanted and needed to be fit for my upcoming trip to England for the dog show “Crufts” in March. I attended Crufts and as you know Covid-19 was the hot topic of the day every day. To make matters more exciting, I caught COVID and ended up on a ventilator 16 days then stayed another 14 days before released. And it all started with looking after a couples dog whom I’ve not seen or heard from since the day after they picked up their dog. All is good and I wouldn’t change agreeing to watch that dog.

I only realised i'd done some serious damage when i looked down, and saw my foot was out it's socket. When they had to move me to get me on the stretcher, that was a different story 😖

    I was playing tag with my sister and cousins, so I was the tagger and I was chasing my cousin and I twisted my ankle and fell. So I’m pretty good with pain but I started crying right away because of the pain. My cousins, sister, mom, and my cousins parents came and saw that it was swollen and bruised pretty much right away. We went inside but didn’t go to the doctor I just put this like ice pack brace things that I had when I sprained my ankle. So idk if it’s broken or not, but it happened yesterday...I still can’t walk or stand on it without it hurting

  • @timdernachn9851

    Seems like 4 of these could also apply to a badly sprained ankle too, at least in my experience. Does there come a point at which ankle fractures and sprains indistinguishable symptomatically?
    Haha sorry I've just watched the last 30 seconds 💪👌

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tim. Yes they are very similar. Ability to weight bear is often the determining factor but a severe sprain is difficult to walk on. Only way to know is with the xray. All the best. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.

    Thank you. Stumbled on this searching for “Signs of Malleolus Fracture “. In dark last night walking my dog I stepped directly off a 2ft drop. (Confess I received a reminder alert to check out of QR code) waa not watching. I basically did the equivalent of stepping off your bed at full height with eyes closed. Landed with full body weight impact transferring stress vertically straight down into medial right malleolus. Absolutely hurt. Did not roll or twist it. Fortunately I am fit and agile on my feet was straight impact injury.
    I hobbled home (1/4 mile) thinking- “great I can weight bear on it- I can’t be broken”
    But as soon as I got back I could not do anything but hop on one leg. (Its going to look ripped. Lol). I have all 5 signs and symptoms of a fracture. Ive had an Xray. Waiting to see if its “mimicking” a break. Or actually has a crack. I suspect it’s fractured. Its not as swollen as I would expect but Ive been ice/elevating it and absolutely cannot put any weight on it. I weigh 115 pounds in American. 53kgs to the rest of us. So Im not very heavy. Lets see if your 5 tips pan out…..

The pain was getting worst so decided to go to the emergency. They did X-rays and CT scans, only to find out I had fractured my lower Tibia and ankle in 4 places...Then had to give me morphine shots cause the pain was getting unbearable. They place me an external Fixator until I had my main surgery. Now I have Titanium plates and screws inside. Still swollen after 2 weeks. Tomorrow I'm going to see my Surgeon and see what happens. I still do not have a feeling on top of my big toe...Hopefully I can walk again 😩
    Also a bit of a good luck in all of this, I got operated by one of the top orthopedic Surgeon in Montreal.

My podiatrist ordered x-rays and concluded there were no fractures but my GP looked at the same x-rays and saw a slight fracture but deferred to my podiatrist. Who do I believe? It's been 7+ months and I still can't turn my ankle without moderate to strong pain. How long before the ankle is back to normal?

I have to have a MRI to check the tendons and the ligaments to see it they are damaged as well. Also how long is recovery for this type of injury ? Thank You ☺️

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda. It really depends on which bone and how shattered. Often with screws and or plates. If shattered likely 3 months to heal. Post op cast or boot. Lots of variables though. Good luck! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

    Found my neighbour laid out on the sidewalk last year before Christmas. Poor guy shattered his ankle on ice while walking the dog. Called an ambulance for him and I'm pretty sure they didn't think it was broken as they examined it and saw no swelling...until they stood him up...and his foot flopped around in all sorts of ways it shouldn't 🤮. I think your ankle ortho at OTMH fixed it for him. Plates and 12 screws.

    Most these are also associated w/ sprains except obvious disfigured, you are right. I’ve sprained and broken 1/2 doz places or duplicate places. I think sprains hurt most initially like, “get me to ER”, but broken hurts less but one knows something is wrong! Both concerning leg or foot is that one cannot bear weight.
    I throw ice pack on these predicaments 😖

    I was skateboarding, fell and inverted my ankle. That was about 4 months ago. We went to the doctors to make sure it wasn’t broken. They x-rayed it and they said it want broken. It’s been 4 months though and still doesn’t feel good. It’s gotten better but I can’t run on it. I have 4 out of 5 of the symptoms do you think my ankle is broken? Or is this a normal amount of time for a sprained ankle. I could’ve torn a ligament or something else not sure though. Just need some advice. I am quite worried as I have a career in football and need to get back to playing.

      I rolled my ankle last year in jury duty of all places. Not just once, but I tried to get up and walk to the jury box and it couldn’t handle any weight and it just kept rolling over. After 3 or 4 tries, an officer just came pick me up and carried me to the judge so I could explain I had PTSD and a flashback of the only other time I was in a courtroom and it was to give a victim impact statement. Within an hour we were let out for lunch and I had to go purchase a different pair of shoes because of the swelling. After about 7 hours, we were allowed to leave and I picked up my daughter and had her drive me to the walk-in clinic. The doctor said that he wasn’t comfortable with a diagnosis and was waiting on radiology. He had me get a brace and crutches. Next day they call and say that it’s fractured and I cannot bare any weight on it and referred me to orthopedic surgeon. In the meantime, I have never seen one foot turn so many colors, it just reminded me of a hormonal teen. My final diagnosis once I seen the surgeon was that it was a bad sprain. The bruising and swelling was overly dramatic, but I do have an abnormal pain tolerance, I guess it’s natures way of balancing it due to my genetics (there isn’t no pain killer I can safely take. I had testing done because of the many things it checked for, but my genetic makeup showed that the smallest dose is too much for me

    I slipped and fell, landed sitting on my ankle and foot crushing it between my fat butt and a concrete floor. I went into shock, which scared me badly because I didn’t know what that was 😂. It’s my foot though, not my ankle that is injured though I guess. I can walk on it, but after walking on it a little bit, it becomes very painful. I’ve fractured once and sprained my ankle many times and always know with that. This, I’m not sure 🤔
