As someone who grew up with a lot of sheltered friends, I can confirm that, yes, there are parents who believe that these are genuine, crisis-level issues.
I love how these are the issues, but when a real issue appears like bad friends that encourage dumb and dangerous stuff for no reason like pranks or challenges that could get them killed or arrested, they don't say anything.
@@cloudshifter Because that requires something vaguely resembling diplomacy, wording their concerns, communication, and not being an authoritarian tyrant who goes "do it because I said so" instead of explaining "why" and confronting why their kid wants attention and validation they're clearly not getting from better sources. It's much easier to clutch pearls and ban things so they can look and feel like a good parent instead of actually going through the pain of *being* a good parent.

For shits and giggles, I was randomly looking at other games' parents guides over here, and I spotted this one on Super Mario 64: "Due to how old this game is, the controls are a bit different to modern day 3D platforms which could be hard to get used to for modern players and/or frustrating to work with." This *somehow* appeared under "Frightening and Intense Scenes". I'm trying to figure this one out.
I'd put for "Frightening and Intense Scenes": "One of the levels is a haunted mansion with creepy music. One of it's areas has a haunted piano that may frighten some players."

this is how my parents were. i bought 2 games off steam a while back. of course i had to show what i bought and they asked me "you are sure these games are appropriate right?" the games were geometry dash and stardew valley.
Yeah but you get married and have children in stardew valley which is inappropriate, don't forget all the *scary* monsters in the mines, as for geometry dash it obviously has a lot of spikes and fire which can be terrifying

What’s funnier is I actually played CO-OP with my sister and it’s pretty much a kindergarten book turned into a game. Very family friendly dialogue and very few (I’ll be it noticeable) mentions of violence. So anyways the hen-tie and the fact Octodad is missing 2 tentacles and has 2 kids was hilarious… So fun fact some octopus use there tentacles by ripping them off and yeah… explains the missing tentacles.
When I was in elementary school, my and some other kids had a pole dancing contest. Me and two other kids were the judges and a couple of other kids were trying to win. We had no idea that pole dancing was a real thing, our thought process was “There’s a giant pole in the playground. Hey! What if we do a dance routine and spin around it and climb it!” Of course, when the adults learned that we had a pole dancing contest, they absolutely freaked out, telling us to never do it again. So many adults assume that even a slight reference to something adult will corrupt a kid, not taking into account that kids have no idea what any of it means.
Plus, not all pole dancing has to do with stripping. There are people who do it just as a form of dance. My friends mother had a pole in her house and did it as a workout, she was not a stripper or ever took her clothes of doing it, of course. Peope like to jump to the worst conclusions and assumed she did private strip shows in the same house as her child.

At base, the Parents Guide for IMDB is a fairly useful idea, as it can give you a basic idea of what to expect from the movie/tv ahow your interested it. I think the main problem is that the contents of these Parents Guide pages are not checked for accuracy or really regulated at all so it just takes one dingus to completely remove any value from the guide.
True and sometimes when I wanna watch a movie or play a game I check imdb to see that it’s good and when it’s pretty bad I hold off on it then when I go back it’s not even that bad and way over exaggerated

A long, long time ago, long before video game magazines were even a thing, before Playstation existed and while PC was trying very, very hard to become a contender for part of the video game market, my father wrote reviews for a local video game shop specifically to help parents figure out whether or not these games were suitable for their children. He'd play these games extensively and write as many notes on them as possible to really get into the nitty-gritty of what might impact a child's mental health in the future, what could make a game "too adult" for a kid, and even began to receive free software and games for this very purpose. Meanwhile, he sat me down at three or four and taught me how to play DOOM because he knew I could handle it. Rather than potentially scarring me for life, all this has done is made me a more creative artist (with a side interest in practicing medicine). Seriously, don't underestimate your children, folks! Not all of them are going to be tough as nails, no, and I'm well aware I'm a bizarre fringe case - but they're not all going to be absolutely fragile creatures made of porcelain, either.
Due to you talking about doom I'm thinking your talking about mid 1990s to 2000s. I'm relatively confused on how PC games were less popular as this was right before/going into the golden age of mmos. Pretty sure Ultima was also out at the time of doom but maybe a couple years off

Reminds me of how my dad (who was never a gamer in any real capacity) picked up COD Modern Warfare on the Wii and let me and my brother play it at 11. Hey, there wasn’t much blood, no serious curse words, just shooting; and by that point we had started seeing a decent number of R-rated films. I’m honestly not too sure why the game was rated M.
*happy doom noises* That aside, my dad let me watch him play bioshock and fallout 3 (I distinctly remember the end of the game). A few years later he let me play them, I was maybe 7 or 8 and it wasn’t even that bad. Gore, maybe, but 2 am fnaf sessions are what got me

Ikr, reading what the back of the box says would be silly! I would really only use the parents guide to see HOW explicit things like nudity and language are. Like I do that for myself with R rated movies since I don't like watching the graphic stuff.
It's actually better. The rating systems allow and disallow really weird things. For example Coraline is PG-13 or something like that, which a lot of parents think mean it's suitable for their kid. But no, that stands for "parental guidance" meaning you actually do need to know the content to know if it's alright. That movie scares some kids really badly lol. There's also the scene where you can see some old lady's entire boobs. Only their nipples are covered. But tbh I think the concept of kids not being allowed to see nudity is weird. It's not like they're sinning by seeing it and it's not going to disgust them either if they're used to it.

The funny thing is that the third LittleBigPlanet game has an object literally called a vintage wine bottle, while the alleged, “beer bottle” in the first game could really have anything in it.
I would spend hours a day watching my mom play DK64, telling her "Go here!" or "Do that! It'll work, I promise!" We never beat the game, but it was fun and I knew the game from a very young age. The fact that people think it can be unfriendly to children blows my mind.

The truth of the matter is that your kid is going to be exposed to... less than desirable elements... at some point, regardless of your efforts to protect them. What matters is that you build a relationship with them such that you can guide and advise them through their exposure to them. What happens too often is that children rebel against overprotective parents and delve deeply into such things out of adolescent spite, and then have no one to balance them out because they're hiding it from you, the ones who are supposed to support and help them.

I think it’s good that IMDb had video games on there now, there is so much overlap between especially in voice actors. There are so many VAs that are iconic cartoon characters as well as great video game characters. A gig is a gig.
6:47 in all fairness, Splatoon 2’s Octo expansion is actually quite dark. Dark in a subtle way, until your character nearly gets pulverized in a giant blender. Then shit gets creepy real fast.
If you dig deep and find this game series’ lore, it is extremely dark. The fuzzy ooze in Splatoon 3 doesn’t just turn the character into mind-controlled soldiers, it also makes them lose all sense of self. And don’t get me started on Salmon Run’s Grillers having Salmonids in it literally being grilled alive as a form of sacrifice.
And don't forget how in splat 1 and in the octo samurai fight in splat 2, you can hear the screams of octolings being blended up in the deepsea metro. And nobody ever believes me when I say that Splatoon is a dark game...
To be completely fair, this is true for nearly every Nintendo franchise--they seem to really like post-apocalyptic settings. Splatoon, Pikmin, some planets in Metroid, etc. And don't get me started on Kirby lore or we'll be here all week.

Guessing a game from the first line, and having your theory instantly proven by the next line is the best feeling. I got Fortnite, Mario Odyssey, Minecraft, Plants vs Zombies, Donkey Kong 64 (though, i just guessed "a donkey kong game" so, half a point?), Roblox, Splatoon 2, and Yooka-Layle correctly.

Bad Dragon (the company) was founded in 2008, but the Reignited Trilogy released in 2018 retains the "Bad Dragon!" title, despite it retroactively sharing a name with a company that makes "adult goods".
I once wrote similar style reviews for a short-lived website that aimed to provide warnings for common phobias (and adjacent issues like jumpscares). The style guide said to be incredibly thorough, sometimes to a point I considered excessive, and some of the categories seemed a little strange to me, but I rolled with it since I thought it was overall for a good cause. This led to cases such as me needing to list the existence of the Pokemon Honedge under a "Weapons" category, since it looks like a sword.

I wasn't scared of the game over screen. But my younger sibling would run away into the other room over it when watching me play lol. Though, I did still try to pause and restart the level instead of dying, because my pride couldn't take letting my character actually die lol.

We need to regulate and control the kinds of things our parents are allowed to see. Their minds are way too young and impressionable. I was starting to wonder why my mom starting talking about how broadcasting a family's psychological issues on live TV and framing it as legitimate therapy was a good idea. Well low and behold yesterday I caught her watching Dr. Phil, and I couldn't believe all of the things he was allowed to say on TV. It had been the same exact stuff she had repeating to me daily, so I knew right then and there that Dr. Phil was the culprit. Needless to say I sent her to her bed early, and she is no longer allowed to turn on the TV if I am not in the same room with her from now on.
I instantly knew Kingdom Hearts 3 when they mentioned the main character calling someone stupid, because it's the closest to genuine profanity the game ever gets.
You know Kingdom hearts 4 might actually get a t rating because first of all in the trailer that something that looks like an AT at from Star wars also the creator of Kingdom hearts is a Star wars fan also by the same line if we get marvel as well I say that's probably going to be the reason why especially because of the more realistic art style the game is going for companion to the other games like it looks weird very strange also the fact that Sora is wearing normal clothes also I don't even remember the stupid thing from 3 I do remember there being a pirate's would but there's also one in two the one that caused me to get it was the line everyone dies and then they get brought back to life because there's not a lot of video games when that happens that I can think of.

When I was in elementary school, my and some other kids had a pole dancing contest. Me and two other kids were the judges and a couple of other kids were trying to win. We had no idea that pole dancing was a real thing, our thought process was “There’s a giant pole in the playground. Hey! What if we do a dance routine and spin around it and climb it!” Of course, when the adults learned that we had a pole dancing contest, they absolutely freaked out, telling us to never do it again. So many adults assume that even a slight reference to something adult will corrupt a kid, not taking into account that kids have no idea what any of it means.
Plus, not all pole dancing has to do with stripping. There are people who do it just as a form of dance. My friends mother had a pole in her house and did it as a workout, she was not a stripper or ever took her clothes of doing it, of course. Peope like to jump to the worst conclusions and assumed she did private strip shows in the same house as her child.

At base, the Parents Guide for IMDB is a fairly useful idea, as it can give you a basic idea of what to expect from the movie/tv ahow your interested it. I think the main problem is that the contents of these Parents Guide pages are not checked for accuracy or really regulated at all so it just takes one dingus to completely remove any value from the guide.

A long, long time ago, long before video game magazines were even a thing, before Playstation existed and while PC was trying very, very hard to become a contender for part of the video game market, my father wrote reviews for a local video game shop specifically to help parents figure out whether or not these games were suitable for their children. He'd play these games extensively and write as many notes on them as possible to really get into the nitty-gritty of what might impact a child's mental health in the future, what could make a game "too adult" for a kid, and even began to receive free software and games for this very purpose.
Meanwhile, he sat me down at three or four and taught me how to play DOOM because he knew I could handle it. Rather than potentially scarring me for life, all this has done is made me a more creative artist (with a side interest in practicing medicine).
Seriously, don't underestimate your children, folks! Not all of them are going to be tough as nails, no, and I'm well aware I'm a bizarre fringe case - but they're not all going to be absolutely fragile creatures made of porcelain, either.

I would really only use the parents guide to see HOW explicit things like nudity and language are. Like I do that for myself with R rated movies since I don't like watching the graphic stuff.
It's actually better. The rating systems allow and disallow really weird things. For example Coraline is PG-13 or something like that, which a lot of parents think mean it's suitable for their kid. But no, that stands for "parental guidance" meaning you actually do need to know the content to know if it's alright. That movie scares some kids really badly lol. There's also the scene where you can see some old lady's entire boobs. Only their nipples are covered. But tbh I think the concept of kids not being allowed to see nudity is weird. It's not like they're sinning by seeing it and it's not going to disgust them either if they're used to it.

The truth of the matter is that your kid is going to be exposed to... less than desirable elements... at some point, regardless of your efforts to protect them. What matters is that you build a relationship with them such that you can guide and advise them through their exposure to them.

I think it’s good that IMDb had video games on there now, there is so much overlap between especially in voice actors. There are so many VAs that are iconic cartoon characters as well as great video game characters. A gig is a gig.
6:47 in all fairness, Splatoon 2’s Octo expansion is actually quite dark. Dark in a subtle way, until your character nearly gets pulverized in a giant blender. Then shit gets creepy real fast.
If you dig deep and find this game series’ lore, it is extremely dark. The fuzzy ooze in Splatoon 3 doesn’t just turn the character into mind-controlled soldiers, it also makes them lose all sense of self. And don’t get me started on Salmon Run’s Grillers having Salmonids in it literally being grilled alive as a form of sacrifice.

And don't forget how in splat 1 and in the octo samurai fight in splat 2, you can hear the screams of octolings being blended up in the deepsea metro. And nobody ever believes me when I say that Splatoon is a dark game...
To be completely fair, this is true for nearly every Nintendo franchise--they seem to really like post-apocalyptic settings. Splatoon, Pikmin, some planets in Metroid, etc.

Guessing a game from the first line, and having your theory instantly proven by the next line is the best feeling. I got Fortnite, Mario Odyssey, Minecraft, Plants vs Zombies, Donkey Kong 64 (though, i just guessed "a donkey kong game" so, half a point?), Roblox, Splatoon 2, and Yooka-Layle correctly.

I once wrote similar style reviews for a short-lived website that aimed to provide warnings for common phobias (and adjacent issues like jumpscares). The style guide said to be incredibly thorough, sometimes to a point I considered excessive, and some of the categories seemed a little strange to me, but I rolled with it since I thought it was overall for a good cause. This led to cases such as me needing to list the existence of the Pokemon Honedge under a "Weapons" category, since it looks like a sword.
Does the Dog Die currently fulfils this purpose. Would be nice to get some content added for some categories if you still remember!

I wasn't scared of the game over screen. But my younger sibling would run away into the other room over it when watching me play lol. Though, I did still try to pause and restart the level instead of dying, because my pride couldn't take letting my character actually die lol.

I was starting to wonder why my mom starting talking about how broadcasting a family's psychological issues on live TV and framing it as legitimate therapy was a good idea. Well low and behold yesterday I caught her watching Dr. Phil, and I couldn't believe all of the things he was allowed to say on TV. It had been the same exact stuff she had repeating to me daily, so I knew right then and there that Dr. Phil was the culprit. Needless to say I sent her to her bed early, and she is no longer allowed to turn on the TV if I am not in the same room with her from now on.
