Last year I did my first three day fast from Thursday and breaking it with Easter Sunday meal. I'm going to do it again this year next week and annually. It felt like Easter was more spiritual and meaningful to me last year. 🙂🙏

RN here. As long as you stopped under doctors care.
Insulin dependent diabetes usually means your pancreas is not working at secreting insulin. Those with type 2 diabetes that take meds have a working pancreas, but may have diabetes related to weight, dietary intake. etc., Losing weight/better food intake helps the pancreas not work so hard for a working pancreas.
If your blood sugar drops too low it can be life threatening. Hope you are still checking glucose levels. Sorry to be a Debbie downer… I’m just looking out for your best interest. Congratulations on losing weight and I’m glad you’re feeling better. No doubt you are on the right path.

Dr. Fung - I was accidently introduced to you 5 years ago. After you educated me on fasting, I then began exploring the ketogenic diet. It has been 5 years. I lost 100 lbs. and have kept it off with no problem. My "borderline Type 2" plummeted. My aches and pains went away. I fast every day--18 to 20 hours, and incorporate extended fasts, (3-7 days), every 2 or 3 months. I am a 66 year old female---feel great---no limitations. You, literally, freed me from my lifetime of fat imprisonment. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. You have made a HUGE impact on thousands, (maybe millions), of lives. Good work, Doctor!

The longer fasts really help with your health.
Some of the many benefits of fasting on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data:
Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system.
Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system.
Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic.
Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque.
Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods.
Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body.
Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy!
Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus.
It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue th-cam.com/video/giEDadzoErs/w-d-xo.html
The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again!
When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state.
It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses.
Does fasting burn muscle? In most cases no! th-cam.com/video/teQIaU6wp2o/w-d-xo.html
Fasting can make you gain muscle faster: th-cam.com/video/5RM8GRzsIIg/w-d-xo.html
Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more.
It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention!
Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! th-cam.com/video/BeC_gIR2Z14/w-d-xo.html
Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections.
After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system.
When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging.
Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers.
In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting.
Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow.
      What breaks a fast? th-cam.com/video/7aRLsCpxy3o/w-d-xo.html
Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period.
Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks.
Fasts of several days will not affect short term female fertility and may increase long term fertility especially in women with PCOS.
Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level.
Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly.
Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia.
Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice.

I am doing a 36 hour "broth day" twice weekly from dinner one evening to breakfast on the 3rd day. I could not fast without headaches until I figured out an electrolyte broth mixture that works for me. I sip warm diluted broth with added electrolytes all day. Recipe - 700 ml bone broth plus 800 ml water, and 5g regular salt, 5g potassium chloride powder, 5g magnesium glycinate powder. Add 2.5g MCT powder for ketone boost, and 2.5g powdered medicinal mushroom mixture called Awaken to a cup of broth. Drinking coffee completely kills me on fast days - within 2 hours I am cold, hungry, tired, head aches. Once I stopped coffee on fast days, I was able to do it. I was already fasting overnight 12-14 hours consistently but it made no difference to my weight until I went to the 36 hour "broth days".

    • @susanstewart1402
      @susanstewart1402 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@onetwoxplore 2600 mg .. seems to be within the AHA guidelines but I recently (after 6 weeks) had to cut the salt in half because of water retention and undereye puffiness. Apparently this is a well-documented symptom of falling insulin levels. Insulin drives water and sodium into the cells so when insulin falls, if excretion can't keep up, there is excess water and sodium in the matrix between the cells. A work in progress, highly individual, and something to keep in mind. I hope Dr Fung sees this and talks about it.

Cooking for the family has become a highlight when I fast. The smell of food intensifies and what I cook smells wonderful. I get the children/husband to season to taste. Interestingly, when dinner is over, and everything washed and put away, I no longer feel hungry. It's empowering to have the self control to cook and not eat.

You have to change what you cook for your family also. Modify their taste little by little like hiding puréed cauliflower to pizza or something. Jessica Seinfeld had a book out about this. Usually, you see people in the same family with the same weight problem because they eat the same thing.

I put a 50-50 mix of ice cube bone broth and water in my family's steel cut oats.

i added 20 pounds during the covid hysteria. i began getting back to normal 3 months ago. i learned several years ago to do two things to lose and keep off weight. Eat only when i'm hungry and stop when comfortably full. Naturally i drifted into 2 meals a day. Worked like magic again until a couple of weeks ago. I'm 73, a woman, short and somewhat sedentary (i do workout 5-6 times a week) and my loss slowed considerably. I had been listening to fasting podcasts and mostly your podcast Dr. Fung. Well you explained it well and i tried it and it WORKED!!!!! Following your direction i found it easy. I am now on OMAD 4-5 days a week and i'm down another 7 pounds (3 weeks). I am into all my clothes now. Feeling like a million dollars. I am confident of losing another 7-8 pounds that brings me to the low end of the weight range for my height and age. I cannot begin to put into words

This is my first day fasting. I heard of other people having an evening window to eat. I have to have a nice coffee, and breakfast. So I decided to do a 930 am to 1230 pm eating window. I'm going to eat whole based foods, eggs, beans fruits and veggies. It also would make a better balance in my life so I can still do picnics, breakfast whatever and drink water the rest of the day and do a yoga routine during my fasting time or a nice walk. Its just way more possible for me to maintain the habit while having a morning window.

April 24, 2022 my husband and I launched into serious intermittent fasting and a low carbohydrate diet. I’ve lost 30 pounds and he’s lost almost 50. I had no diseases or medications, but he is off Losartan, Metformin, and Omeprazole! His T2D appears to be reversed. We both still need to lose more weight to be in a healthy BMI range. The problem that I believe is starting to slow me down is that I get hungry before bedtime, no matter how big a dinner I eat. I usually fast every day 18-20 hours. If I don’t eat before bed I will not sleep. I have been awake at 2:30 am from being hungry. Interestingly, this doesn’t happen to me on 48-72 hour extended fasts. How do I conquer this obstacle? Thank you for the wealth of rock-solid information you have provided for us! Our lives are changed!

I bought and read your book, "The Obesity Code." It was well-written and provided an excellent explanation of the role of insulin in obesity. I had already tried the ketogenic diet, but with limited success. One time, when my wife was gone for four days, I only ate dinner but not breakfast or lunch. To my surprise, I felt really good with a lot of energy and mental clarity. When she came back, she cooked breakfast as usual - bacon and eggs and cheese, which is good for ketogenic eating. But I waited to eat breakfast until later in the day. Now, I eat only when I'm hungry, not because it's expected. I was at 205 pounds at the start of 2023. Now I'm at 187 pounds and feeling better.

Dr. Fung, you gave a really good tip in this video and that is brushing one's teeth. I would like to add that this really helps me and I have been doing it for a while now. I brush my teeth immediately after dinner and once I do that it's like a switch has been flipped, I just don't feel like eating anything anymore.

Great tips! I like to share other tips that I learned elsewhere. Remind yourself of the dire consequence of diabetes. Yep, scare yourself to stick to intermittent fasting. Watch a lot of videos from Dr. Fung. In other words, educate yourself. Put a blood glucose chart of prediabetes/diabetes in a place that you can see at least once a day. This is constant reminder of what is your goal. Good luck!
