      Hello Dr Fung, I’ve been playing around with fasting for the last 3 years. I’ve done 7 day water fast once to kick start the fat loss. Using your analogy fridge/freezer, how do I get to the “freezer” with IF, if I refeed every 36 hours and get to ketosis usually takes at least 48 hours. How do I burn fat on 16/8 or 24 hour IF regiment then?

I used to love shopping now I don't even want to go to the store and if I do I pick the biggest size don't even try it on and deal with it. I've heard that said. With only intermittent fasting, no counting of carbs or calories people lost weight. It was hard for me to believe but every time I hear it I believe it! I would love to have a normal diet versus a keto diet. If I can adopt this kind of intimate tent fasting and maintain a regular diet I would be so happy!

    I gave up sugar long before I ever heard of Keto or fasting. Possibly this made things a little easier for me, because I've found Keto and intermittent fasting so easy. I'm still fasting 19:5 every day and I've 'shed' a ton of weight. I started in May 2020 and I weighed 313 pounds. Today I weight 210 pounds.

      Do you count total or net carbs? And great fasting regimen, too long fasts trigger my binging.

    • @RobCLynch
      @RobCLynch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@InSync3912 hi, when I started, I did count net carbs, but I feel this held me back. In the end, I just decided that carbs were not necessary and although I still get some - less than 20 grams per day, that's when the magic happened.
      So the only carbs I get are from vegetables and my coconut and almond flours.
      I'm not an expert, but my take on your 'long' fasts is to consume larger meals during your eating window and to include more fat.
      Consider fat bombs when the craving comes to town.
      Hope that helps.

    I lost 25 pounds very fast without knowing about fasting. I bought a home and was busy adjusting to ownership that I only ate in the evening. I questioned why the weight loss and ventured online and realized that not eating all day was the answer. I continue eating only once a day so actually fast for 21 hours. I do have sweetened and creamed coffee for breakfast and drink water throughout the day. I may not be following the exact formula, but it seems to work for me.

    Tip #4 reminds me of what Jesus had to say about fasting. "But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. My wife and I regularly fast not only for health benefits but also for religious purposes. Keeping our focus on why we are fasting really helps us on the challenging days. I fast every single day for 20 hours and I randomly do 48 hour fasts too. I only drink water during those times except first thing in the morning I add electrolytes to my water (powder form and also has sodium, potassium and magnesium in it). I've been doing this for three weeks and I'm about 50 lbs overweight. I haven't weighed myself since I started but I've noticed a huge difference in my body. Being in ketosis is incredible and gives me amazing energy. I've lost inches from my waist and legs.

      @ Chandra. I'm very happy for you! I started 16/8 about 10 weeks ago and lost 22 lbs. This is the fastest I've ever lost weight. I've done a few fasts for about 24 - 40 hours but still find them difficult. I used salt and substitute salt to get sodium and potassium in the last time (1 tsp each sipped slowly over 40 hours in water); that made it easier but was still a challenge. I'd like to add in magnesium and calcium next time. What powdered electrolytes did you use? Thanks in advance!

    • @tribalbabymum
      @tribalbabymum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      When you talk of electrolytes in powder form, is it a product? I add lite salt with potassium and sodium, or magnesium fizzy tablets or use salt tablets at different times, usually with Vit D. I saw those other comments, geez, Megan Ramos says the first 24hrs are the most critical for replacing electrolytes as the body is dumping them with the excess water from the insulin drop. I certainly benefit from some combination.

      @@muslimgirl6782 It's pretty simple, so I'm not sure how much help it will be, but it's currently:
      "FOOD AS A PROXY FOR...
      -pleasure/taste... *drink apple cider vinegar
      -self-care... *take a shower, go on a stroll
      -stress relief... *meditation
      -freedom of choice... *make travel plans for post-pandemic
      -comfort... *stop all work, watch a favorite movie/TV show"
      When I feel a "hunger" pang, I look up at the board and try to figure out what feeling I'm searching for. The hardest emotion to satisfy is the desire for comfort, because I've found even stopping all stressful activities leaves me wanting something else. Not social contact or anything (though it may work for some), but something intangible that is probably just elusive to humans from time to time. I hope whatever your lifestyle is like, that you're able to find substitute activities that work for you and give you a sense of peace.

    What I like about fasting is that I don’t have to try to figure out a lot of healthy meals. It’s much easier with less meals to plan. I also don’t get food fatigue with simple healthy meals when Im eating less meals.

      Yeah I enjoy vegetables so much now that I crave broccoli like I used to crave chocolate! 🤯. I’m not making it up I swear it’s true. And i save so much money every week. My husband joined me fasting now and we save even more as just my two kids and mum to feed. In the past I did weight watchers and thought I did really well but it cost me money. Now I not only fast for free but I get all the money I’m saving from not buying the food!

      I started at the beginning of April. Down 20 . . . feel great. Your comment is spot on. I love all the time and money saved. I only eat dinner, which is usually my "social meal," so I don't miss out on family/friend time. All those other meals . . . just time gained. Easy button. And, yes, I enjoy dinner a lot more since my body is ready to eat and not still "stuffed" from lunch.

    Anyone out there who has been struggling doing some form of keto and IF and still not losing weight... try an extended fast! I've been struggling for two years on/off keto or zero carb and tried 16:8 and omad and my weight would not budge even sticking with it for months. The first time I did a 70 hour fast and then omad the rest of the week I dropped 10 pounds. It started to fix my blood sugar as well, averaging 90 and dropping to 80. The third 70 hour my blood sugar dropped to 72. This really works!! Try it!

    Type 2 diabetic. I started with 12:12 fasting, then today I fasted 16: 8. It was easier than I imagined. When I did eat, the food tasted so good. I hadn't noticed how tasty my low carb food actually was. I really thought I would be starving lol, but I wasn't. Going to try 16:8 for a few more days, then I will try a 24 hour fast. I couldn't taste or smell anyway and it made diarrhea less annoying. Getting fat adapted is the key. Going whole food plant based and IF is the best. Carbs do not cause or exasperate type 2 diabetes its simply bc all the fat and processed crap we eat stops glucose from entering the cells leaving it trapped in the bloodstream. I am not saying keto or low carb will not drive down glucose levels, a1C, and even other markers like triglycerides. I am saying its like putting a band aid on the real issue however, because as soon as you reintroduce even a moderate amount of carbs your glucose levels will rise dramatically. WFPB mostly or clean veganism is just as difficult if not more difficult to follow than low carb, but if tour goal is a healthier LONG life thats clearly the way to go. Check blue zones where there are large amounts of centenarians or the largest percentages of populations living that long and you will find one common denominator......... ding ding ding ill give you a hint they are not low carb or low carb high fat dieters. They are all predominantly plant based and high carbohydrate. Also the only diet with sufficient CLINICAL research that has not only stopped but reversed heart disease. Take all this as you will, but research and you will see for yourselves. I love Dr Fung and will continue to IF and alternate day fast even though im off the low carb and keto ship. Although it is harder you can indeed still fast even for long periods without low carb. Fat adaptation is not dependent on a low carb diet and has been proved especially by bodybuilders who are already fit who carb cycle and eliminate anything for a cit just before a competition. Was 365 October 2019 and am now 300 although i did get down to 275 at my lowest around 4 months ago. Fell off an am trying a new approach going forward. Best of luck to everyone no matter how you get there!

      @@aaronrender4867 Good luck to you too. WFPB with IF is a great diet and can be very effective for weight loss and improving your overall health. I find lower carb, higher fat to be best for me. It can be done vegan and vegetarian of course. It’s just a bit too restrictive for me. The key to healthful eating is real food. So much better for us than the very SAD consequences of the standard American diet.

      @@faithjulian753 No doubt the combination of highly processed foods and the constant coupling of carbs and fats together led me to a morbidly obese state. Went low carb and did some keto with IF but ate toms of veggies. Numbers drastically went down then slowly but as of earlier this month all markers are great even though i have put 25 of the pounds i lost back on. Thanks Dr Fung for these video tips. I particularly liked that you mentioning finding a support group. I went through the journey alone, found my eating window and made better food choices and achieved my results. Because my window of eating time and food choices, it was annoying to others in the household that I dont align with their eating schedule and constantly decline eating the food (carbs) they eat. I goto restaurants that dont have food options for me so I watch others eat, which is okay to me, but annoying to others in the group. These are the people who said I used to be too fat and ate too much. I am back to normal weight now, and most importantly healthy. Cannot be happier.

    Loved the refrigerator/freezer analogy. I'm just started adopting intermittent fasting lifestyle for weight loss and hopefully maintenance of my metabolism. Your videos really help. I have been worried about trying to consume more calories when I'm not fasting. Thank you for your information. I will "keep it normal" Knowing that I don't need to "re-feed my body "

    Thank you! This video cleared up a question of mine: how much should I eat after a fast. I started a low-carb diet two months ago and got into fasting a week ago. I let myself go as long as I could without feeling lethargic and when I do, I will feed. I Thanks to the low carb diet, I found it very easy to go on a fast for 24-48 hours. But I was forcing myself to eat more than I normally would ( until my stomach hurts slightly) because I thought I needed it so that my body can function during my fast. I will try to eat a normal portion meal after my current fast and see how it goes!

    Hi Jason - I totally thank you for you input in the world - I saw your video about financial conflicts of interest and the end of evidence based medicine a few weeks ago and I am so impressed. And this video also is so kind and straight forward. Thanks for your work in the world.

    Dr. Fung, what a profound difference you are making in so many lives. Sincere thanks. I can't believe the amount of BS, lies and misinformation circulating on the interwebs these days, especially about ketogenic and fasting lifestyle. My latest gasp: "fasting" bars you EAT while fasting 😒

    So so good, we need to just train our body to go and get the food from our internal fridge, and we should not act as if fasting is this big alien thing; it should actually be the norm.
    Thank you so much, just the right timing for me!

      Some people think fasting is a horrible idea. Most of the time it's because they haven't tried it. It's not scary and it's not unhealthy to do this at all.

    I love the advice you give in this segment video Dr Jason Fung!! My kids and I follow you and share the information we find that gives us an extra boost to be successful in our fasting and weight loss. My daughter went through the pandemic pregnant and found it difficult to lose weight when still staying at home. My son and I gained extra weight through the pandemic for a variety of reasons. Now though we are all finding hope and encouragement from different areas, one being intermittent fasting, to take back control of our emotional, mental and physical health. Thank you!! 😃❤️👍🏼
