      Thanks Jason, great work ! Interesting perspective using Pavlov . I have been studying generational 'foreign corporatized', social psychological conditioning of 'the Australian social system .For many decades trying to help up and coming generations from being programmed with rotten addictions. I call it 'Modern Pavlovian Helotism ' Currently i am water fasting to try and cure bad Fungal over growth. I have a Basil cell not wanting to heal on my Leg for a couple of months now .Going into a Rudolf Bruess Diet on the fourth Day of this fast .

      I'm in the 16th day of my 21-day water fasting, and I normally cook for my family. No problem. I watch the food I'm preparing as an observer, not as a participant. Food simply doesn't concern me. I don't use "strong will" - that would be too exhausting. What I use is just total disinterest, indifference and unconcern. I've just learned to be too lazy to care.

    another super effective solution is watching a jason fung video and reading the comments because it 1) distracts you and 2) reminds you of why you're doing this and 3) comforts you that you are not alone, and by the time you finished the video the wave is over

    You can also train your mind by thinking "I like this feeling because my body is eating my fat". Works for me.

      @@robertp7209 You don't have to. Instead of hating the hungry feeling just change it to like. Your feelings are not automatic, they are programs by your mind's collection from birth. You can reprogram your mind, just take some time to get used to. It's a learning process.

    I was raised on a dairy farm. We worked all the time. We didn't eat breakfast or snack. Half the time I skipped lunch too. We were never fat or tired. Then I went to college and was told how dangerous my diet was. How I was supposed to eat a low fat diet and eat all day long... 100+ lbs (weight gain) later... I learn (from Dr Fung) that I had the diet right to begin with...

      @@melz266 I am 176 cm, 65 kg and have muscles of a gymnast. Partly it was achieved by a special system of food consumption. I do not care if it is called "diet" or what. But I' d like to loose the last 2 kg of fat, so I am looking for solutions.

      A similar story happened to me diagnosed with type 2 and I refused medication decided to do my own research found Dr. Fung and With his help, I lost 50lbs in 7 months and am all clear from type 2 with an average A1c 4.8. KEY is no snacking ever again and regular weekly fasting 2 twice per week. this works best for my lifestyle.

      @@dgm3033 I eat my last meal at 5 or 6 and then try to go at least 18 hours before eating. I do not snack in between meals. I do this daily, but in the beginning of my journey, I would twice weekly just one meal a day. I’m still dropping weight but at a slower pace and it doesn’t bother me. I’m just happy to feel good for the first time in many years. Good luck on your journey and know that you can do it and you’ll be so happy. God bless.

    I have lost 10 of 50 and yes I do get hungry. Most of the time it passes. During water, green tea, vinegar water. When that fails I raise my shirt and grab a slab of belly fat. Works every time.

      Coffee, warm water, Seltzer water, and chewing gum seem to be most helpful in ignoring hunger. Staring at my own belly fat or eating naked is something I haven't tried. But I definitely will!

    You have reminded me of another healthy habit I read from a Russian writer years ago: after sitting down to eat, don't rush to gobble down your meal, instead take a few seconds to smell the food while saying a small prayer. I need to start doing it again

    Seeing cravings as a ¨wave¨ is what helped me many years ago when I finally quit smoking. I would start to feel the craving for a smoke, and I would try to calmly see it as a wave that would soon recede again. I would also take the wave/craving as a signal to do some deep breathing until the craving passed. It really helped and I´m striving to see food cravings the same way and know that it will pass. I also greatly appreciate those in the comments who remind us to see it as a positive thing instead of something to be avoided at all costs. We don´t need to fear hunger when we realize our body will simply use its stored fat for energy. (afterall, that´s why our bodies store fat in the first place, to burn when needed.) Thanks, everyone!

      This also helped me put things into perspective and continue being able to fast during difficult and strong cravings because that’s all it is cravings, we won’t die without food for a couple hours lol

    Fighting hunger pains made me feel alive. Truly alive. Made me feel in control of something when my life and covid and the world felt like it was all spinning out of control. When you have will power you feel empowered. I promise. And seeing yourself lose 75 lbs in half a year makes it all worth it.

    Focus on what you want.
    If you find more pleasure in eating rather than having the body you want you are going to eat. But also being “hungry “ is not a bad feeling. Being full and frustrated because you can’t refrain from eating is not a good feeling.

    I’m glad you mentioned Pavlov and his experiments. That’s the way I look at this process. When I feel the pangs, I try to reinterpret it by telling myself “that pang means that something positive is happening to me: I am conquering myself.” Thank you for your help.

    I'm on my 6th day of OMAD... six days in a row of 23 hr fasting... there was a time I never would've thought I could go 23/24 hours without food... I feel really good, haven't been "truly" hungry since the first day... I am beyond amazed, and incredibly grateful for Dr.'s like Jason Fung, and Ken Berry, Paul Mason, Georgia Eade... and so many more! I finally feel like there's HOPE for me to "cure" my t2d. Utterly amazing!

      Wow…I wonder how you do it 6 days in a row OMAD. I used to do 16/8 twice or three times a week. Today for the first time I’m almost finishing OMAD. Two hours left! Thanks lord that was tough specially after the 20 hrs mark. For me, once a month is good enough for OMAD and mixing it up with 16/8. Good luck.

    I've found that my hungry feeling is different now from that violent, urgent and panicky feeling that I had before. It's noticeable, but not overwhelming. I feel great overall!

    I find that 80% of the hunger pains are actually thirst. I don't drink coffee until later in the day when I fast second I take apple cider vinegar. That gives me an additional 2to5 hours. Thank you doctor you have to changed my life

      This is true--staying hydrated helps *a lot*. And I have a variety of zero calorie drinks--sparkling water, a variety of coffees, green, red. and herbal teas, apple cider vinegar, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. These last I have a tablespoon of either in a glass of sparkling water. Sometimes when it is cold I use a cup of hot water instead. This variety is healthy and also keeps my interest--and so I am less likely to obsess about eating on fast days.

    When I made it past the second day of Fasting my hunger was mostly gone and there was an energy level that came over me that was amazing. I now fast regularly and my body is adjusted. No cooking, cleaning for 3 day!!!

    One thing that has helped regarding cooking for others... Giving myself permission to enjoy food in other ways than eating: chopping vegetables, making dough, enjoying the aroma. All while enjoying a cup of coffee. Just missing out on one sensory bit.

      I needed to read this. I love cooking for others. It gives me such joy. I cook for my church twice a month, preparing food for up to 80 people.
      I’m so busy preparing and cooking for three to four hours before serving, by the time I do get an opportunity to eat, I’m not hungry.

    My way of dealing with hunger is simply think about the benefits of being fasting: More active, you feel good when fasting or just look at some over weight people around and say to yourself, hey you don't want to be like them. Eassssssyyyyy. Fasting is a beautiful thing people, you are in control of your body. One day you enjoy having your favorite food few days later go without. That's what I mean total control of your body. You control food not the other way around, it's what you call; mind over matters. God bless you brother Jason.

      Learning from others of what not to do can’t be a great tool. I don’t find it disrespectful. It’s not like he went up to them and told them he didn’t like the red shoes. So you keep in mind not to put an outfit together similar to the one you just witnessed. We all have our opinions. Great point.

    I try to tell myself "that's not food" when I see processed products (which I see a lot of, cuz I work in a grocery store). Listening to Dr. Jamnadas helps me with remembering that.

    I often get hungry at night, at 11:00 p.m. or midnight. When that happens I tell myself, remember how not hungry you are going to be in 8 or 9 hours when you wake up. You won't want food at all. This will pass, you have at least 35 lb of extra fat that your body has available. Go drink a big glass of water and read a book, or meditate and fall asleep. I am successful 95% of the time. Lately it hasn't happened at all, probably because I'm more fat adapted.
    It also helps to understand the science behind why we feel the way we do. I know that it's my ghrelin peaking, I understand where it comes from and I know that it will pass. Knowing that makes it a lot easier to ignore or to greet it as something that you recognize without giving in to it. The more we treat our body as a friend, rather than an enemy to subdue, the easier it becomes.
    And when we do eat something with sugar or extra carbs? Don't characterize it as a cheat meal. Don't fetishize food that way. Dr Fung talked about there being a time to feast and a time to fast. He went on a cruise with his family and ate the cruise food and enjoyed it. When he came home he fasted more and lost the few pounds he had gained.
    This is good advice for all of us. If you're at your birthday party or your spouse's celebration, you can have some of what other people are eating if it is rare and an occasion and a celebration. We aren't meant to eat the same way all of the time just as we aren't meant to eat all the time. If you are intermittent fasting and eating healthily you can have a piece of cake as long as it doesn't trigger you to continue eating cake. We are all different, some of us can and some of us can't. There is no shame involved in any of it.
    If we are able to stop viewing sweets as the delicious forbidden food, it loses a lot of its allure. Sweets are delicious, I love to bake and I love chocolate. Ice cream, cheesecake, all really delicious things to eat occasionally and when you eat them, enjoy them and don't beat yourself up. But occasional is the key. If we are eating a healthy low carb diet, intermittent fasting, getting lots of good quality food, exercise and sleep, our bodies can handle a slice of cheesecake or some ice cream occasionally.

    Thanks again Dr. Fung. Learning how to fast and eating one meal a day has been the best thing I've done for my health in years and years. I'm 58 and down over 125lbs so far now since last November! I'm almost to my goal 😊. It's been an awakening.
    I cook for family so it was difficult at first and I cook my meal separately, but we all adjusted pretty quickly. Now, it's not a problem at all for me to be around food and not eat. I love my meals I prepare.

      Wow!!!! What a success!!! You can be very proud of yourself. I have to admit that at times I still struggle preparing food for the kids and not being able to eat. Especially if it’s pizza. But lately I’m managing better even with that. Sadly I had a drawback with eating cookies with my coffee. Need to go back to better sugar free eating.
      May I ask you if you have some loose skin? Did you also exercise? Cheers

    From January 1, 2022 until today February 13, 2022 I have lost 42lb by combining IF and Keto. One of the biggest contributing factors for me has been increasing my consumption of saturated animal fats. At on point I lost 8.5lb in 4 days. I have averaged 5lb/week. My overall goal is to lose a total of 100lb by the end of April 2022.

    I find that walking is really useful when feeling hungry during a fast because it is not only a distraction from hunger but it seems to suppress your appetite for a while.

      Did 3-day fast once last year, the most difficult time for me is during 24th - 36th hours.
      Once passed 40th, it was quite easy and peaceful 😇

    down to 213 lbs, today closing to my goal weight real fast. Fasting works 100% on average about a pound a day for me just broke a 36 hour fast but I will be back on fast tomorrow do I feel hungry no not at all. Thanks for your videos you have inspired me to keep at this

    I keep a small pillbox of pink Himalayan salt (phs) in my pocket always. Whenever I feel a hunger wave when fasting I put a pinch in my mouth and slowly nibble on it for “mouth feel” and maybe a drink (water/tea) the wave passes.
    Because the salt is not iodized I periodically rub Lugols iodine on my skin (if it disappears in 24 hours signals deficiency-just reapply until it persists @24)
    To balance the sodium (phs) I supplement potassium daily (Dr B electrolyte powder) which got rid of the heaviness in my legs when I first started fasting and really didn’t know what I was doing. I’ve learned so much from Dr Fung. Also it has helped me to keep a copy of The Obesity Code in my lunchbox and when fasting I read it on my work breaks when I would have been eating for encouragement and knowledge.     I would also suggest hot cocoa as a liquid appetite suppressant. I realize in most cultures that tea and coffee dominate the hot beverage discussion, but hot cocoa is on par with them in antioxidants. I make mine with unprocessed cocoa powder, liquid allulose as the sweetener, and a dash of salt to remove the bitterness.

    I’m drinking a cup of warm tea with stevia right now at 9:30 pm, was feeling a little bit of hunger. I’ve been doing IF 18/6 for 3 weeks and have released almost 10 pounds. The first few days were hard. I felt hunger a lot, but after 3or 4 days my digestive system settled down and got used to this way of eating/not eating. I just got back from a 6 day vacation and kept to my routine. Proud to say I lost a pound 😌 I eat at 11:30 and 5

    I have a different approach or focus and that is to prepare yourself mentally that you're going to be hungry, accept it, deal with it, conquer it. I have three keys in that approach. 1. Don't feel sorry for yourself. We have an innate sense of empathy for hungry people, and that includes ourselves. The self pity is optional. Don't allow yourself that pity. You're fine. No self pity required. Don't feel sorry for yourself that you're losing weight. 2. You can only be so hungry. We've all been that hungry before, we'll all be that hungry again, fasting is nothing extraordinary. It's not a crisis. 3. Finally, you can take it. This is only going to last 30 minutes, and it will go away. It's nothing new, it's not a crisis, you can take it, no need to feel sorry for yourself. You're hungry, so what? Instead of dwelling on that, what else do you want to do with all this free time you're not spending on food? Doing that for 10 minutes and you'll probably forget all about being hungry!

      Well said and spot on!
      I would add to that by saying that we need to understand that when we are a bit hungry we are NOT STARVING. People so often claim to be starving when they are actually only just a little bit hungry from anticipating an upcoming meal or from having missed a meal that they would normally have just had.
      Also remember, getting away from all those sweet things and carb things is NOT A SACRIFICE OR A DEPRIVATION.
      Acknowledging that these things are sneakily poisonous, and are like an assassin that will smile at us while stabbing us in the back, helps us to stay with things that we should eat and to steer clear of what we really need to stay away from.

      Your approach has toughing it out and dominance all over it. "Toughen up! You got this! 10 more reps! No pity!" Your approach is about no quarter, beating yourself and your feelings into submission rather than thoughtfully understanding why you feel the way you do and working with it to succeed.
      If that approach works for you, great. But please don't advise others to use it. When they fail and everyone occasionally does, they will beat themselves up. That is counterproductive and can create more problems.
      I wrote a comment above with my approach. My approach works for me and might be helpful for others or it might not. When I'm hungry I remind myself that it's just my ghrelin peaking. That I have about 35 lb of extra fat on my body that my body can access for a meal when it's hungry if I'm not eating. I know that the ghrelin peak will subside and I'll be fine. I can have a big glass of water, read a book or meditate, get on my bike, call a friend, there are things I can do and in a few minutes it will subside and I'll be fine. I can pick up one of Dr Fung's or Dr Lustig's books or watch a video if I really need encouragement.
      I don't treat my body as the enemy, neither do I treat my feelings as something to be dominated. It's not about pity or feeling pity, it would never occur to me to feel pity but acknowledging how you feel is necessary. In my view, beating ourselves up, yelling at ourselves to overcome something, rarely is.
      Life is already extremely difficult. We don't have to turn ourselves and our feelings and needs into the enemy, we don't have to beat ourselves up to succeed. It's healthy and useful to understand where something is coming from and not give in to it without turning it into a battlefield and a war.
      I get it, that imagery might work for you. It might give you that shot of encouragement that you need. It's a specific kind of imagery that doesn't speak to me though and it could backfire.

    I found for me it’s important to plan
    meals I meal prep. I drink water and coffee before my meal so I don’t wolf it down.
    If my meal is ready I’m not making bad choices.so far so good

A few weeks ago I saw a clip of Dr Fung speaking of the health benefits of fasting for three days, it sounded incomprehensible that anyone could tolerate that kind of deprivation, but it was as easy to do as just not eating, I am presently into my third day of fasting and I'm feeling good:)

    If the kitchen is a trigger for you, keep food out of sight out of mind. Organize your food in drawers or opaque containers (yes, even inside the fridge).
    Putting yourself on the path of least resistance will help build up those habits.

    I just finished my first 4 day fast. It went great. Hunger was mosty gone by the third day. I have been doing keto for 4 months and added IF for the last 2 months. Just finished a 99 hour fast 1pm today. I started with a small grilled chicken breast then an hour later added my bulletproof protein Coffee pumpkin seeds macadamia nuts olives strawberries. Then had a much larger chicken breast with a smaller steak for dinner

      Green Tea shouldn’t taste bad or bitter if it does you are steeping in too hot water and steeping for too long. Steep in overly hot but not boiling water and steep for just a minute and I guarantee you will taste the difference in these delicate tea leaves.

    I just finished a 48 hour fast. It was so easy! All I did was have one bullet proof coffee each day made with butter, stevia, and coconut oil,and drank lemon water with ACV and Himalayan pink salt. I never felt hungry at all because the bullet proof coffee satiated me so well for the entire day.
    Easier than you think really.

      @justsayin6767 yes! Tea is just as good as coffee.
      Also, I've found that if I eat a nice fatty meal like steak and eggs with some butter, then I'm literally not even hungry until the next day, which makes omad easy to do. I drink bullet-proof coffee mostly only because of my habit of coffee drinking. But I really don't need it to satiate me anymore being my meals are full of fat.
      So replacing carbs with fat is ideal for losing weight. Not to mention saving money on food, being I'm only eating once a day.

    Another great video! One of my best "tricks" is distraction. Justy doiuinng someething that ttakes my mind offc hunger really works. But the best is doing something where you're using your hands. Makes it more diffficult to eat. Like, drawing, painting or knittting.

    I brought a container of chopped Romain lettuce to the movie theater. I got that same crunchy sensation as popcorn. It did the trick. I'm so proud of myself.

    I hear that decaf coffee has the same effect as regular coffee for appetite without all the caffeine.

    I wish I could have read all the comments below but I could do only 100 of them from the most disciplined minded people who have been watching the Veteran Dr Fung's shows regularly and getting instant benefits from his all tell lectures....I personally want to thank Dr Fung as well as the great folks who share their experiences in the commen section in detail which encourage hundreds of thousands of other people who are still in confusion regarding their health over all....

    My strategy for not being triggered when I cook for my husband...I make foods that I don't particularly care for, but the he likes and doesn't get otherwise.

      I cook for my husband, and make foods that we both like on my fast days (we like most of the same dishes). But I just think of this as a chore (a rather pleasant one. but just another chore like cleaning or organizing), rather than freaking out that I am making food that I won't be eating. I though this would be really difficult, but it has mostly been fine.

      Yeah I know what you mean. One day I went a long time for the day without eating. I had no Cravings I wasn't fazed at all and it was super easy. Could be a couple of hours to realize what happened. And that was, that I have not drank anything. I tried it again and it work the same way. In about a month or so later when I heard about dry fasting. And I said, "I've been doing that". But I went too far. Did It too often, for too long. So now I use it more responsibly. It works great🎉

    I highly recommend being fat adapted before doing any serious fasting. This normalizes your hunger.

      I would describe it as, your body is already trained to focus on the fat for fuel instead of struggling, searching for carbs. I actually just started day 5 of my 21 day fast.

      True, I was 5 years on keto before fasting seriously, didn't find it that difficult at all.

      This and also in full ketosis. I did a 4 days fast with this preset and it went real good. A bit of a light headed day 1, a bit of a headache day 2 but then it went well. At times i felt normal and at times abit lethargic. I could have gone past day 4 easily but i was allready so slim so decided to stop. Biggest issue was boredom.

    My favorite tool is a large tea water heater. I plug it in in the morning and it keeps hot water on demand. Some days, I am hungry and need several green or herbal teas. Other days, I take advantage of the hot water once or twice. Best gift I ever received! Thanks Dr. Fung!

    My recent trigger was my solo 3hr road trip to the beach. I always eat hot chips to stay focused on that long boring drive. I've been fasting 5 days on and 1 day feeding, 5 days on, 1 day feeding. Lost over 10ls at this point. My mind was on max mode. My spirit was on a high. My energy was amazing. Those darn addictive chips flipped a switch inside of me. Bought a pizza on the shore. Ate chips on the way back home and a week later....still eating hot chips on the daily (from my kids school lunch supply). I have my next fast marked on the fridge for Monday and the school lunch chips trigger are stored in the kids closet for now lol

    Walks work really well for me-usually need to be 45 minutes or more, and it helps if it's warm and/or sunny.

    The information I’ve learned from you has transformed my fasting regime: regularly scheduled 5-day fast around every 6 weeks (+/-) and it’s NO effort at all. It’s made a huge difference in the management of my T2D; two years off all meds and doing well. Thanks!

      @@patfontaine5917 ok, so you have plenty left to go, but great so far. And for you as a benefit - In my case was sick only twice in 8 yrs, and one time it was the COVID shot 😁. Was sick many times a year prior 😲.

    I am the head cook at a daycare of 180 mouths to feed. We feed them breakfast, am snack, lunch and pm snack so they eat every 2 hours. It’s a lot of food in front of me everyday. I struggle with fasting but am learning the benefits! It is so difficult for me to turn away food or sample foods for quality purposes. I’m working on my mind right now.

    I have something that works every time for me. When I get really hungry, I get out my dumbbells and do a few sets. Something about the physical exertion takes the hunger away. It doesn't even have to be heavy weights.

    Loved the practical tips. Our eating habits are truly behavioural more than physiological so we need to be mindful of why, what and when we are eating. Keto and Intermittent Fasting are lifestyle changes. For myself, I trained my brain of what I can eat if I am in gatherings or dining with friends. I choose low carbs, good fats without alcohol and it’s an automatic response almost. I don’t eat desserts. Intermittent Fasting actually helps you to develop discipline of identifying what is good for you.

    I jumped in 1st because I am having this problem right now and its making me unable to extend my fasts , even though I have fasted longer in the past. Sure my kitchen triggers me. Also stress .I need more structured activities. I also need to focus on hydration. I'm severely dehydrated. I would love if we had neighborhood hydration centers!
