It's a very close 2nd and at times I think it's better. For me they're neck and neck and constantly vying for first place. In fact, given that I prefer hard rock and metal I think Operation Mindcrime is better. It's more my style of music. And now I'm in real trouble because I probably just greatly annoyed a large number of Pink Floyd fans. 😱

As a child of the 80's, constantly hearing that "metal takes no talent" from people who have never listened to it before, its gratifying hearing all these professionally trained people in awe of Geoff Tate, Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson, etc. I think metal is a lot more complicated than most music, both lyrically (sometimes) and instrumentally. Metal music is music that could easily fit into orchestral settings. I always say metal was created during the period of the classical composers. They just lacked electricity and amplification. They created music that was as fast and as loud, for their centuries, as much of the high quality metal out there.

Geoff was not an opera singer, but had some classical/opera training. I believe his aunt was an opera singer though.
Other vocal coaches have pronounced him to be a baritone, hence such rich warm tones in his upper register. But, you would know way more than me. I'm just picking things up along the way.
That second E5 he hits in this song is just perfection! Always makes me smile!
I really enjoyed your analysis and comments. Always fascinating to hear what knowledgeable vocal coaches have to say!
I hope you do more Queensryche!
For the opposite end of the scale, try "Silent Lucidity". Very lush and in Geoff''s mid to lower range.
