- I thought I had a pretty good feel for Queensrÿche after hearing Take Hold of the Flame... boy was I wrong! I think I've barely scratched the surface of Geoff Tate's vocal ability. Today we're listening to something completely different with their song Silent Lucidity.

Quite simply one of the most beautiful, well-composed power ballads of all time. It stands as a masterpiece.
@@randyjohnson6845 I don't know what you're even trying to say, man. This song was written by Chris DeGarmo. The rest of the band acknowledges this. It was sung excellently by Geoff Tate. Michael Kamen did the orchestration behind it. They obviously had a great producer mixing it. Give credit where credit is due. Queensryche weren't like your typical pop artists of today where everything is written and produced FOR them. They actually wrote, performed, and had a hand in producing their songs... because it was THEIR songs.

I don't know if he's underrated though, because when you look at this era of music, Geoff and Don Dokken were considered two of the best front men. Even though they were in battle with bands like Warrant with Jani Lane or Ratt with Stephen Pearcy, I still think Geoff was considered one of the best. Now, if you branch out of that genre and get into like heavy metal with Dio, then Geoff definitely would be considered underrated because dudes like Dio or Michael Kiske from Helloween absolutely kick his ass.

I do not know what that means exactly but as an Alan Parsons fan I sort of understand and know you are right.
You can't go wrong with their masterpiece album Operation: Mindcrime particularly the songs Revolution Calling, I Don't Believe in Love and Eyes of a Stranger especially their live performances. They were at the height of their powers as a band during this era.
Operation Mind Crime or Live Crime, should be listened to in there entirety, it is the greatest concept album ever recorded.

Whoever handled the mixing on LiveCrime messed it up. Not saying the bandmembers themselves did anything wrong but the recording was bad for me. The concept is amazing, I love it. But not the Live version.
Agreed. But, that being a concept album, she'd pretty much have to react to the whole album to get the gist of it. Easy. 😅
It's an incredible album. I don't think you get the full value from them without understanding the story, but it stands alone as the greatest concept album of all time. Suite Sister Mary, I Don't Believe in Love and Eyes of a Stranger are all incredible songs standalone, but their greatness is amplified tenfold when you understand the characters and story involved. The soundscapes are truly visceral.
AND ALSO THIS SONG: "don't ever trust....don't ever trust the needle....it lies...."
In my opinion, this is the most moving song I have heard in 60+ years. Geoff's vocals tear me apart EVERY time I hear this. The orchestration is beyond perfect. The strings, the chorus, the drums, the arpeggio on the guitar, the David Gilmore-esk guitar slays me EVERY SINGLE TIME I hear it. Each replay repeats the emotion I had the first time I heard it. So remarkable. Best song of all time! Thanks Bethany🥰.
I can't believe you referenced David Gilmour, lol. As a teen in the 70s I thought this was pink floyd. The sound, guitar and vocals all sounded just like floyd.😊

"I Remember You" by Skid Row is also still as moving as when I heard it the first time more than 30 years ago, and I've heard it hundreds of times.
I get that same reaction every time hearing it. I try to sing along and break down in tears at various points throughout the song. What an incredible work of art!

I thought it was just me! I'm here at 3:00 in the morning marathoning thru several of her reactions. There's something about her feminity and intelligence and simplicity that makes her so beautiful.
It's probably just me, but Chris DeGarmo's guitar intro is so incredibly beautiful and heartbreaking that when Geoff comes in with his vocals "Hush now don't you cry, wipe away the teardrops from your eyes" my own tears are fully flowing at that point.
It's like, how can you NOT cry when he sings "don't you cry"? And then "wipe away the teardrops from your eyes" for me has the exact opposite effect on me, and just fully opens my tear flood gates.
I wonder if Chris felt all those emotions while he was writing this song. So beautiful melodically and lyrically.
This song showed that Chris was not only a great songwriter, but a great lyricist as well.
And Geoff's vocal interpretation of Chris's lyrics?

Heartbreaking.
Queensryche were definitely right at the top of their game with this album, Empire.
After the brilliance of the rock opera Operation: Mindcrime, it was one of the big questions in rock music circles:
How will Queensryche follow Mindcrime?
The answer was Empire.
And it proved that not only could they follow Mindcrime?
They outdid themselves on Empire, something no one expected.
Including me.
As much as there are no bad songs on Mindcrime?
There are none on Empire, either.
Both albums:
All killer no filler.
And nearly impossible to follow those musical Goliaths.
Even Hear in the Now Frontier didn't quite measure up.
Great album though it was.
Anyway.
I know all the stories behind why Chris left.
Sometimes I wonder if he decided to walk away because he knew he'd never quite touch the magic of those two Queensryche albums.
How could he?
His wife wanted him home more.
He got his commercial pilot's license so he could fly business jets and have a slightly more normal work schedule than he could have in a rock band like Queensryche that was just blowing up like crazy after those two albums.
How do you top those?
Because that's what everyone expects.
And I think Chris knew he couldn't top those albums.
Almost did. But after Hear in the Now Frontier, he had to walk away because he had nothing left creatively to give.
And he left just as Queensryche's star was about to fall out of the sky.
I know Chris kinda came back to music a couple times.
I don't think he ever had anything like the success he enjoyed with Queensryche.
And Queensryche weren't really Queensryche without Chris.
Anyway.
Just one fan's opinion.
(It also doest seem too much of a stretch to think that Chris just got tired of being a rock star.
Wanted a "normal" life.
A non-rock-star life.
Wife. Kids. Normal job. Normal hours. And privacy again. Yunno?)

Back in the day, Geoff's singing essentially had no weaknesses. The layering and composition of this song are utter perfection. This is one of the top 10 best songs in the entire history of rock.
Geoff Tate’s voice has to be a difficult one to analyze, as he seems to be able to take it anywhere. Really impressive stuff.
Also an incredible testament to the brilliant songwriting of Chris DeGarmo. I always liked the little snippet of Brahm's Lullaby by the strings at the end.

Geoff Tate is a monster vocalist...one of the very best! Seattle strikes again... the techniques they used to record this album set the standard of excellence for that time and won several awards for those innovations, and many are still being used today!
"Is There Anybody Listening" is one of his best vocal performances. I would also highly recommend the unplugged acoustic versions of "The Killing Words", and "I Will Remember".

Everyone is talking about his voice, which is phenomenal. In no less addition, the composition, musicianship and engineering/mixing all comes together to make this song one of the greatest of all time.
A long time ago I used to sing this softly to my children at bedtime. Sometimes I would just hum it. They would lay their heads on my chest and feel the vibrations. One by one they would drift off to dream land. Those moments were truly the core of happiness. Thank you.
"Eyes of a Stranger" should be your next video. It has a nice mix of what Geoff can do.

This particular Queensryche song is like they said, “let’s do a Pink Floyd song”! Love this song, sang it on stage a bizzillion times!
When the song came out, many mistook it for a Pink Floyd song.
I was going to comment that the backing vocals sound so much like comfortably numb. "Ah-ah... I've become comfortably silent lucidity..."

My sentiments exactly. It's almost like they took Comfortably Numb, added some new lyrics and a little different phrasing and rerecorded it. It's almost like a ripoff.
This power ballad ended up being their biggest hit. The producer didn't want it on the album(Empire ,released 1990), but the band insisted. Some of us thought at first that it was a new Pink Floyd song when we heard it on the radio.
One of my fav bands, Silent Lucidity set a new bar for rock ballads in my opinion - great read of Geoff's talent in both videos EDIT: And I also vote for you to do Eyes of a Stranger next, the whole Mindcrime album is amazing, such a fantastically told story through lyrics and melody

There's nothing better than watching younger people (and particularly those with a musical or vocal background) discover just how astonishingly good the vocalists and musicianship was of these rock bands in the greatest era of music there's ever been, the late 50's to the mid 90's (particularly the 70's and 80's). It's why this old guy watches music reactions! And you might have guessed tenor from Take Hold of the Flame but if I'm not mistaken he's actually a baritone.
Just a couple of comments:
1) As a huge Queensryche fan, THANK YOU for giving them your attention.
2) Since you usually prefer live performance. I highly recommend a song not too many people will give you, but you will appreciate it thoroughly: The MTV Unplugged version of 'The Killing Words.' It's a tremendous showcase of Geoff's range LIVE and acoustic!
3) You're gonna get a lot of requests for "Eyes of a Stranger" next. GREAT song, but be aware that this tune is the climax at the end of a rock opera entitled "Operation: Mindcrime," so the lyrics won't make much sense unless you know the story.

Anybody Listening is my favorite. His voice on that song gives me chills.

This song is done so beautifully it makes me want to cry every time I hear it, just wonderful.
My father would sing this to me when I was 3... He never really talked at all but he knew he was going to leave soon because of his drug and alcohol addiction. When his quiet self mustered this song from him helped me fall asleep when I was a chubby 3 year old child... This was actually my earliest memory ever before he passed when I was 7. My father was a quiet man but I will always remember him singing this song to me.

Warms my heart to see a person as young as you appreciating Geoff Tate, one of the greatest vocalists of all time.
I saw Geoff Tate performing Operation Mindcrime live last Saturday (17th) still has an amazing voice. Was extra special to hear this live on my birthday and then have Geoff share my instrgram post where I thanked him for that.
This masterpiece has been with me since its release, always coming back to it. Everything is at the right place here, the music - the singing, the lyrics. 😍

"The Warning" is seriously under-rated as an album. Roads to Madness, No Sanctuary, NM 156 are all incredible.
That is my favorite song by them, real dark, and he is real expressive with his voice in it. My favorite line he sings in it is: "Times measure rusts, as it crawls, I see it's facs in the looking glass - stop.
Roads to madness is amazing and I loved it. I wish the production were better. Didn’t age well.
Technically and artistically... this is their best piece. Time has proven.

This song moves me every single time. I was never a huge Queensryche fan, but this will always be one of my favorite songs as a musician. The nod to Brahms, the orchestration, the restraint throughout. The gentility is captivating. I just can't even express the emotions with this one.

Queenrych was one of my favorite bands as a kid growing up . I saw them live at the VLA(Very Large Array, Socorro NM) and was blown away. Chris DeGarmo wrote great songs that 30 years later I can still appreciate and understand in a different way. Geoff Tate has one of the best voices of any lead singer.
The VLA would be an awesome setting for a concert. I never knew anyone performed there, let alone these guys.
"I will remember" unplugged is a must if you want hear magic. Geoff is soooooo Damn good in that one.
The start of this song is more in tune with Geoffs speaking voice. He has a really dark voice

Geoff Tate is a phenomenon. His vocal range is godly. His songwriting is legendary. As others have stated, Operation: Mindcrime is the band's masterpiece album, being an operatic journey into the mind of an outcast being seduced and used by a criminal organization run by its leader Doctor X. The entire album is a conceptual album full of twists and turns to keep the listener fully engaged from start to finish. Michael Kamen had a large part in the orchestral arrangements. Seeing that you will be listening to more of Queensrÿche, I would kindly request that you review the song, "Suite Sister Mary". I personally prefer the album version because there are so many nuances to be heard that just can't be repeated in a live setting. Cheers. 💗
My band got to open for Queensryche about 12 years ago when Geoff Tate was still singing for them. He was super down to earth, and hung out behind the Fillmore stage with us in Detroit. The thing that blew my mind, was he was smoking out there....

i saw it hit you on the "help me" part...the epic conjunction of the voice, the music and the awesome imagery building up the that 1 second of just amazing overload of emotion....your eyes raised and your head gestured in disbelief....we all felt that...its what makes this song stand so very much alone.......what a gift
I've seen Queensryche live once and I've seen Geoff Tate right after he went solo. And I got chills every song he sang. His vocals are amazing.
As a young man, hooked on hard rock and heavy metal, I often had to defend my love of that music. Due to the clothes they wore, the length of their hair, and the negative media attention they often received, people tended to overlook the talent. It is so refreshing, in this day and age, to see people approach many of the songs I love and realize just how wrong they were.
Queensryche is one of my favorite bands period. Was lucky to see them live years ago and it was one of the best shows I've seen to date. Great react again and there are so many other tracks to listen to that you really can't go wrong with any choice. 🙂

I love the way you really listen & hear the music. The way you describe everything & use the painting analogy. You paint pretty well with your words & descriptions. I was previously the lead singer in a couple bands in my day. This particular song still gets me as it saved my life... it cane out shortly after my father passed away and the words felt like it was him talking to me from beyond. It saved me.... MUsic became my life then. I appreciate your reviews & it is nice to see your joy discovering all this music. I bet if we were to talk, we would spend hours & hours excitedly talking about music. I've been a Queensryche fan for over forty years and I love watching you discover how incredible Geoff Tate is. If you want to be blown away listen to Roads to Madness off of the Warning album, it has it all, he takes you in a vocal journey, but listen to the studio recording. Another song where his voice sounds like butter is Anybody Listening off of the same album as this song is from, Empire. Enjoy the rabbit hole...

Roads To Madness is Geoff's finest vocal moment IMO
Bethany, I appreciate your expertise and expert analysis of Geoff's vocals. I have been a huge fan of his and Queensryche since 1986.
I encourage you to next listen to their masterpiece Roads to Madness (studio version only). This particular song showcases Geoff's ability to sing in his wonderful warm baritone voice, but he also hits his tenor level ranges as well.

I heard this song while Geoff was still the lead singer in a coliseum in shreveport la. It is still to this day the greatest sound Iv ever heard. It was pure vocal talent. I tear up still, 40 years later.
I really like Queensryche but this is by far the best song they have made. Geoff's deep tonal qualities and richness of his voice just brings through the feelings in this song. It's wonderful!
This song is my favorite of many favorites. Probably top of the list. We're talking 'nobody talk...this is my song!', the stereo gets cranked and I get lost in the beautiful music and his voice...OMG lol. I have to use the word 'haunting' for this song. Thank you for a great reaction to this one.
I generally avoid watching "Reaction" videos because the world is already full of opinionated haters.
But you!.... it's like... you are so in love with music, and as you experience the creative expression of the artists, it'like we are on the ride with you.
You never cut down, you are open to each form of music with absolutely no bias. you find the beauty in every part, not just the singers. You don't listen to music, you experience it! That is what is intended. Music was created to open hearts and speak to the very core of a person. This is what every kid with a sampler and a laptop can never understands.
My first musical experience was Dark Side Of The Moon, in a Sandman Panel Van, in Quadrophonic 8 track, on my back on a mattress, eyes closed. 12 years old.
I sat up and realised that I must learn to play, write, and share.

I consider this a masterpiece of vocal work. So much depth and tone clarity without over singing.
This is my #1 song of all time and I've been a music fanatic for over 40 years. This song helped me greatly in my late teens struggling to depression and drug addiction. It helped me realize I could escape the terrible world I built for myself in my dreams. I sang this to my child putting him to bed at night it meant that much to me.

I really enjoyed this reaction and analysis. I'm a long time musician and have really enjoyed this song immensely since it came out. Probably the only thing that I like from the '90s. And as a psychologist, I really enjoy watching you choosing your words and landing on just the right one to paint a relevant and relatable picture for the viewer.
Oh and I agree with you on that vocal 'scoop' you mentioned on the line "I'm smiling next to you", on 'smiling' I would call that an 'upward inflection', which just gives you that warm consoling hug that the child needs. Great job, cheers.☮️🎵

Queensryche has been a long time favorite band of mine. As stated below, Operations: Mindcrime is their masterpiece. A song from the middle of this concept album, that I would recommend is Suite Sister Mary. It is actually a duet with Geoff and a female vocalist, and runs from slow, low vocals to high energy rock. They also have an MTV Unplugged episode, that includes a lot of up close looks at Geoff's singing. I'd recommend Killing Words from that show.

I've been a Queensryche fan since the 80's, it's one of my top 3. The album "Operation Mindcrime" is the "bible" of Queensryche, it's really awesome.
He´s got it all, one of the best voices that Rockmusic has created - period.
The very first song I heard from them was Take Hold of the Flame. I was blown away and became obsessed with his voice.
I remember cruising a jeep through southern Utah at twilight with this album cranked. Stunning scenery and music❤

I love this reaction. This band as constructed in this era was a remarkable powerhouse. Operation Mindcrime was a brilliant album in both music and lyrics and quite possibly the best concept album ever. I still listen start to finish on a very regular basis even several decades later. Please check out either I Don't Believe in Love or Eyes of a Stranger. I promise you won't be disappointed. Cheers!
I could never get tired of this song. The low tones in his voice give me the shivers. So beautiful.
This is one of my most favourite songs of all time, and it fills me with so much emotion every time I hear it, that I end up bawling my eyes out every time...... sublime...

No one is quite sure what his range was back then, but it was several octaves. He could sing high, low, and in between with ease and power.
His singing range was at least 4 octaves at the time (maybe 5, but I haven't heard that, and I've listened to most of their songs), but he could hit higher notes outside of that range, at the expense of clarity and diction, as most people can, with a simple scream or wail. His range was impressive back then. His real strength is his ability to seamlessly transition between vocal techniques. You don't see that here with this song, or anywhere on Operation Mindcrime where he takes a more theatrical approach, signing in character, but you do get hints of it in songs like "Another Rainy Night" and "Empire". Just hints though, Tate never really hung his hat on range, so there aren't any individual songs where I think it's fully showcased. But across an entire album, you definitely hear it.

Most professional singers are around the 3-octave range. That is common, but good enough to go pro in most genres. Metal generally requires a 4-octave minimum, so it's rare in that genre, but very common in pop music, rap and country.
Freddy Mercury (Queen), Peter Steele (Type O Negative) and Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) had just above a 4-octave range. They are also regarded as some of the best contemporary singers in Rock. But lots of professional singers in Rock and Metal can make that claim. They're separated more by technique and style than range.
Rob Halford (Judas Preist) and Whitney Huston in their prime had a 5-octave range. Huston is no longer with us, and Halford is down closer to 4 octaves now (aging does that). Axl Rose (Guns & Roses) is alleged to have had a 5-octave range in his early career, but I don't hear it listening to their recordings. It may be true, but I can't confirm. If he had it, he didn't often use it.
There are fewer than a dozen people in the world confirmed to have a 6-octave range. Many make that claim, but very few have been verified or able to back that claim when tested. The current record holder is Pop singer, Adam Lopez who can hit a D♯8. Most of the others reside in classical and operatic genres, or don't sing at all, and use it for things like voice-acting. However, Mike Patton (Faith No More) and Corey Taylor (Slipknot) are both in this exclusive club.
Metal does have some extraordinary singers. A disproportionately high number of incredible singers in fact. More theatrical genres simply have Mutiple singers to cover a full range. In other genres, often the style is more gritty and plain so a lot of range isn't needed. Songs simply aren't written for over 5 octaves, because, who the hell could sing them, lol... Metal is one of the few styles where those singers can really stretch their legs and go from "Darth Vader" to "Dog Whistle" and not confuse and disturb audiences, lol.
That's why I love these reaction channels with actual vocalists. Many have been told all their lives that metal is "just noise", it gets looked down upon by a lot of classical artists. But then they listen to it and realize "Holy Shit, that sound shouldn't be humanly possible to make, and they did it effortlessly". It's not just screaming, being a metal vocalist takes skill, and a certain degree of masochism to subject yourself to those demands. It's not easy. If you can sing metal well, you can sing anything.
It’s my understanding that Geoff never sang in falsetto. Maybe he just didn’t have that element to his voice or maybe he just didn’t like it?
Everything I’ve researched has claimed he was 4 octaves plus several semitones.
I could be completely wrong but I believe if he had sang in falsetto he may have been 5 octaves.
Geoff has a fairly deep natural speaking voice.
This song gives me goosebumps every single time I listen to it. This song was also used to perfection at the end of the second season episode of Supernatural, where the love interest for Sam is a werewolf, and the brothers have to kill her. Sam ends up doing the deed and this song is playing in the background.

It's my understanding that Geoff Tate has a 5 octave range voice. I've been fascinated with his vocals for a very long time. The OPERATION MINDCRIME album is a bit of a Rock Opera that I think will be of interest to you.

During the 80th and 90th years I was a metalhead and my favourite band was Queensryche. Then I had a longer "metal break" - the only metal albums I kept where the first four of Queensryche. And I still possess them, now accompagnied by many albums of other metal bands because - in my 60th - I re-discovered metal for me. So over the decades Queensryche has been the only metal constant for me and I still love their music, especially this song.

This is just a remarkably beautiful song, been one of my all time favorites since I first heard it way back in the days of the dinosaurs.
