Take the time to stroll through his album credits, any of his albums. He personally has written every song, every lyric. Every one. How does one person have this much talent? I heard him interviewed and he said there is a song running through his brain all day, every day. If Captain Jack doesn't prove his brilliance, just listen to "She's Always a Woman" and "She's Got a Way". I mean, what the F? One of three great regrets in my life is that I didn't apply myself to learn to play the piano. Damn, that. Anyway, at least Billy and you, Dixie, can.
He had a high level of piano, but did not particularly flaunt it, he always designed his piano playing to serve the song, more than to be admired for his playing.

Great song, poignant lyrics. I was honestly never much of a Billy Joel fan, but this particular song has always resonated with me, mostly because I have lived out most of the lyrics, but also because of the passion in his singing. Even if you can’t personally relate to the lyrics, everybody knows someone like the protagonist in the song. I know plenty of others who this song has really struck a chord with. It’s a powerful tune.

How they made the "So you decide to take a, holiday..." verse groove so much. Real chemistry of the jazz and blues licks side by side. After listening to the album version for years, this gave the song new meaning.
Yeah every version is so different. The "Songs in the Attic" version is considered his best live one, but there's no video that I can find. Trying to figure out how to play and sing this one myself and it isn't easy.
This is an amazing song and amazing performance. As people said- the microphone-moving chin, the synth, plus Billy jumping up and down in his seat during the verse makes this man legit a talent, and a master. I'd say up there with Keith Richards and Jimi Hendrix.
I get my weed from a dispensary that's named after this song. Lol I love it. Mind you, it was my favorite Billy Joel song for a good 10 years before I ever tried weed.
