Lyrics:
Seen the lights go out Broadway
I saw the Empire State laid low
And life went on beyond the Palisades
They all bought Cadillacs
And left there long ago
They held a concert out in Brooklyn
To watch the island bridges blow
They turned our power down
And drove us underground
But we went right on with the show
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the ruins at my feet
You know we almost didn't notice it
We'd seen it all the time on Forty second street
They burned the churches down in Harlem
Like in that Spanish civil war
The flames were everywhere
But no one really cared
It always burned up there before
I've seen the lights go out on Broadway
I saw the mighty skyline fall
The boats were waiting at the battery
The union went on strike
They never sailed at all
They sent a carrier out from Norfolk
And picked the Yankees up for free
They said that Queens could stay
And blew the Bronx away
And sank Manhattan out at sea
You know those lights were bright on Broadway
That was so many years ago
Before we all lived here in Florida
Before the Mafia took over Mexico
There are not many who remember
They say a handful still survive
To tell the world about
The way the lights went out
And keep the memory alive

When people like Billy Joel, Elton John, and Don Henley stop touring and playing music who’s gonna replace them? Pop artists just aren’t like this anymore.
Right after Piano Man came out, he did a show at a small club in Memphis. I remember going upstairs so that I could look down at his hands. I can't even describe it. Brilliant.
He doesn’t get enough credit for his voice. Incredible.
My personal favorite song of his. His love for NYC and the way people were ready to give up on NYC drove him to write this masterpiece
The piano riff at the end is classic ! Why is Billy Joel not given the respect he deserves? Seriously, this guy has made so many great songs that are enjoyable time after time, and his lyrics are clear and relevant. We need a Billy Joel musical movie like Mamma Mia, or a biopic done right(not like rocketman). I could help write the screenplay.
Remember thinking 2017 was the future?
My wife and I are heading to Madison Square Garden on April 27, 2024 see Billy Joel live. I cant wait.
That’s bizarre. Get ready NY. Putin is coming and Billy Joel called it. So did Jesus, He’s coming back soon!
Liberty De Vitto on drums and Richie Cannata on sax. Two legends.
This should honestly have been named "Miami 2020"
Iconic song from Billy!!! He is unbelievable as a song writer and performer I have seen him several times and it is better each time I am there!! True Long Islander as I am!!!! God Bless Billy!!
I will take my Turnstiles album to my grave. I love every second on it and it is the spine of my musical body. Thank you, Billy <3
So Incredible to see preserved the youthful energy, the clarity, and passion that made him (you) one of the best in an era of so many superstars. This song is epic!
This song has always given me such a haunting feeling. Billy's been my favorite ever since I was eight, my dad loves his music.
Such an amazing song. Even for people who have never been to the places he is singing about, we can relate entirely. Love it.
What a masterpiece. Billy and his band, (Richie and Liberty shine so much on this one), were unstoppable. A true force of nature. I’ve probably listened to this song more than any other in my life; it is so good and so addictive. 🎹
I had the pleasure of seeing Billy Joel live in concert FOUR times-twice in Houston, Texas (September, 1982/April, 1987)-and twice in Oakland, California-January, 1990/December, 1993! He put on one hell of a show!
If it wasn't for Billy Joel I couldn't pick a favorite artist
We were at MSG in Feb 2020 and heard him sing this. I’ve always loved Billy but never really knew this song-now it’s one of my favorites.
The drumming is profoundly amazing and a driving force I have never heard a drummer play like this. Except when I saw Billy play live. His musicians and himself are superior to what you normally find. whew.
