A lot of people actually use silicone oil on their bucking when they go to shave it down for flat hop. It makes it easier to turn it inside out so you can shave the mound and guideline off.

and note, he didnt say put the silicone inside the hop rubber either. Lubing outside is enough so that the rubber can soak up some oil to keep it nice and flexible. Cleaning them heavily with alcohol will almost certainly DRY out the rubber. too much silicone will cause the rubber to swell too much and weaken its structure. Clean with soapy water and dry with air, and apply silicone to the whole thing and wipe off excess. esp the inside. this is what I do and I use ML's exclusively. after 2 years never had to replace one yet.

Personally silicone on the outside when inserting the bucking, then clean the hop mound with alcohol.
Silicone around the bucking keeps it supple, alcohol on the hop mound keeps it grippy for efficient hop. 😊
Results are occasionally dependent on bucking material though, one exception being KWA and their lovely swelling buckings 😅

Interesting I’ve never heard anyone say silicone oil will damage a hop rubber. That doesn’t even make any sense to think that it does lol. Ive heard for my whole life that you need to clean your barrel and hop up with silicone oil. But then later I was told that you actually need to clean your barrel and rubber with alcohol to maintain consistent friction characteristics between the bb and hop rubber. That made sense to me so I started using alcohol. I noticed a pretty big difference in consistency after switching to alcohol. It’s been years since the switch and I’ve had no issues with my hop rubber drying out. Perfect air seal too. Obviously I don’t drown the rubber in alcohol, I just clean the patch and lips with a dab on some cotton fabric. I’d also imagine that the effects of alcohol vary on different hop rubber compounds.

Luke, here is one caveat to putting lube on a hop rubber. I just repaired a GBB KSC MP9 Japan version for a customer (2008 model). The replacement hop rubbers from KSC are garbage. Unfortunately they are the only ones available for that gun (they are oversized and not standard KWA sized) if you put silicon lube on them it will soak it up like a sponge and render the skirt lip useless for holding a bb in place. The violent blowback action will push the bbs too far into the hop chamber. In this system the rocket valve is integral to the nozzle and must contact the bb to open it and fire the bb. If the bb goes too far into the chamber it will not contact the bb and a misfire will occur. ONLY until the second bb enters the chamber will it fire because the first bb is still in there and thusly causing a double feed after the rocket valve touches the second bb in the chamber. This is one of those cases when you should under no circumstances put silicon oil on your hop rubber anywhere. 2 weeks later the guy calls me and tells me his gun stopped firing bbs. When i returned the gun the first time I instructed him to stop using silicon oil green gas and use straight propane or oil free gas. The gun was firing flawlessly. When I arrived to look at the gun there was silicon oil all over the outside of the gun. My first question, "were you using that crap green gas with oil in it?" Sure enough he was. I explained to him AGAIN that gun was never designed to run green gas in the first place, it was a japan version so only duster gas should be used in it or oil free gas. I cleaned the rubber very thoroughly with dish soap to help leach some of the silicon oil out of it. I managed to use some black rtv sealant to strengthen the skirt lip by spreading a thin layer on the outside of the rubber around the skirt side. we will see how it holds up.

I've always used and combination of alcohol and silicone lube. I clean the rubber with dish soap and warm water, run through and over with alcohol and a q-tip, then I lube the outside of the bucking with silicone. the alcohol keeps the inside clean for maximum traction on the bb and outside supple enough for ideal air seal. In my experience fps is consistent and the hopup shoot lasers. I clean my barrel separately with silicone, fyi.

That's great the problem is you rarely know what the 'rubber' actually is, silicone does eat certain of the synthetic rubbers out there.
It's such a nightmare to get right, maple leaf at least tell you the exact material.
If yiu ever deal with a vitron rubber like the ksc gas smg rubbers (which are wank in so many ways) they swell with silicone oil and it means the thing doesn't speed.

Just a PSA, Isopropyl alcohol is not the same as regular booze. Alcohol is a term that encompasses a broad range of compounds. Ethanol is the type found in alcoholic beverages intended for consumption. All other types of alcohol are extremely dangerous to consume, and could very easily lead to blindness or fatal organ failure.
Pure ethanol will have similar properties to pure isopropyl alcohol in terms of interactions with rubber, but only one of them could be safely consumed by a human.

I've seen over time silicone oil in the gas causing a kwa mp9 hop rubber to swell. However I regularly put silicone oil on a bucking to help insert it into a hop unit, for a smoooooooooth insertion. Alcohol drys anything out. But at the levels you use to clean a barrel. I doubt anything would happen. But for a £10 part that should last a long time with little to no care. Why worry

So Noveritch did a cleaning video stating not to lube your hop rubber and to use denatured alcohol to clean your barrel which is right to clean your barrel but he’s using a sniper rifle so you wouldn’t want to disrupt the bb by adding a sticky substance down the barrel but certainly you’d want to keep the bucking and nub supple and healthy still.
This is prob where people are getting this notion? I know Air gun (non airsoft) BB GUN collectors state n vids to also not use oil down your barrel ,so that may contribute aswell.
It’s common sense to us here that in airsoft you’d just be rubber burning (like carpet burns)your bbs if you didn’t use some type of lube on your hop rubber. You’d be burning off your nub if it was dry,and too much lube or too thick of a lube on the rubber and down your barrel will dramatically slow the bb down and jam the barrel.
We just brush a thin swipe all over the entire thing to keep it healthy from drying out and wearing the nub too soon, just oiling you’re mags will splatter oil into the nub aswell so just do it when you clean your barrels.
Gas or propane will eat up the nub and rubber too so oil keeps a nice barrier between the two.

IPA became popular around 2014-15 mainly because it is a good degreaser and it's a selling point to the technically ignorant because IPA genuinely doesn't leave a residue...thing is any residue that's potentially left from a barrel swabbed with a silicone spray soaked piece of cloth is inconsequential.
People need to read their manuals, certainly in the early 2000s almost all of them instructed the use of silicon spray in the hop after use.

May be considered wrong, yes. The 13 minute video above is leaning towards the end of the spectrum that we don't really need any cleaning agents anywhere near our hop rubbers... When you clean your hop rubber with alcohol (no matter the percentage or how diluted it is) how much of a 'clean' are you looking to achieve? Lets not overthink this, we're only wiping away light amounts of surface grime. you can literally use Q-tips that are dry and or lightly lubricated to wipe down rubbers or if you feel you need to add any cleaning agent then a bit of dish soap and water... Edit: At least that is what I think the video was getting at... alcohol on hop rubbers is meh.
