If those were 9 x 9 tiles on that floor, there is a very good chance there was asbestos in them which is very very dangerous. You're suppose to have that size/age tile tested prior to removing. Also wear protective gear while removing.

I watched the video again and she was wearing both eye protection and a respirator while removing this paper! And you're correct about that hopefully Lauren and Neiman had the tar paper tested for asbestos!

They are pretty smart in using protective gear. But I'm not sure if they knew the how or why to test those tiles.

@@jenniferbassett3001 Yes I did notice she was wearing a respirator as well as eye protection and gloves. I was meaning she should be at the very least wearing a disposable one piece jump suit. Kind of like the ones people wear while spray painting ceiling etc. That asbestos is no joke.

The technique used to remove the mastic was extremely dangerous. When dealing with asbestos or when in doubt the best technique is to keep it wet. I use wet towels and a commercial iron to steam the mastic to make it soft then scrape off. There is no friable material. Always air on the side of asbestos.

    Most likely has asbestos,
It was common in building materials then. Asbestos is fire proof, an excellent insulator, resistant to chemicals, durable, and inexpensive. That is why it was used.
Minimal exposure unlikely to do harm.

About 40 years ago, I removed old flooring and a layer of tar paper from my kitchen floor. It was a nightmare. Took me about 4 days of hard work, didn't have a heat gun, soaked it with water to soften it and scraped it with a razor blade. Didn't work very well at all but I got it done. Never crossed my mind to use any kind of protection either.
