Doesn't mean anything, been working too long in corporations, that's code words to try and be reassuring, but the fact is the entire team is laid off and it's a skeleton crew. Forget NACS adoption, no OEM in their right mind will touch it now, and good thing too as it was a bad idea, we're seeing why here. The Supercharger network is all V2/V3 which is good for the Tesla fleet but not the newer 350V vehicles. Other OEM's will drop NACS plans and just provide adapters, and maybe not even that considering that Tesla designed the Ford adapter, and now have no staff to do the same for others.

@@Gnosticware correct. Especially the non-support of 800V vehicles is a critical point and one of the reasons why Tesla slows down their charging network. The chargers are simply outdated and Tesla needs to update their vehicles and the charging network

This seems nuts to me. Tesla has just set up the entire industry to switch to its NACS connector, and is set to become the Exxon-Mobil of electric charging for the entire country, with a business model that should be a cash cow that ensures constant income to the company. Then they fire the whole team. WTF?

That's exactly the point. Now that every other charging network is going to support NACS, that takes a lot of pressure off Tesla to expand their network as quickly as they were planning to. Plus, now that Tesla is in direct competition with the other networks in the sense that they can now draw non-Tesla customers away from those networks, that forces the non-Tesla networks to improve their uptime and provide better service to both Tesla and non-Tesla EV's.

I think Elon Musk has gotten bored with selling cars, and wants to go all in on stuff that excites him...like AI, robots, and space rockets. I also think he is mentally losing it ever since he bought Twitter and is simply not the person he once was. The Cybertruck, for example, consumed a huge amount of resources to develop, for what is essentially an Elon Musk vanity project, while the boring, but badly needed model 2 gest cancelled. I am starting to think that Tesla would be better off with a different CEO that actually cared about the electric car business.

The Supercharger network is the single greatest accomplishment Tesla has ever done, because long-range travel that's EASY is fundamental to the adoption of EVs in North America.
I can't easily visit my in-laws in Kansas without very specific planning. I can't even drive my car when I'm out there to go to the grocery store. Because there are no DCFC locations, and that grocery store is 100 miles away.

“The best part of Tesla is their Supercharger Network.” We heard this over and over again through the years. We’re now to believe Tesla just dumped the best team of the best part of a Tesla ownership experience or is it they don’t agree with the previous quote or is it a mix of each. Tesla is obviously grappling with fiscal issues not being reported. A factory that shut down or a Truck that will be years in production before they break even. Tesla could’ve built a cash cow of an EV, had it to market in 1/3 the time and already broke even a year ago regardless of target audience or type of EV if it just used conventional current building materials. No one is going to build a stainless steel anything to chase Tesla down that rabbit hole. Unfortunately the talented employees let go are collateral damage. They have my prayers and respect for their plight. Sad to see Tesla so late delivering the highest kWh with least amount of transfer loss. Hopefully they can make the transition rather than be stuck in the past. 27:51

I agree with you about the "cash cow" and I'm surprised I don't see that comment more often. I've been saying it since the Cybertruck came out and turned out to have some nice innovations but be very expensive and not only very late but not fully baked (unlike Musk). I see it as a lost opportunity to come out with a new vehicle before the competition had a chance to catch up. The worse things about the Cybertruck seem to also be the things that delayed it. All that time and money and expertise that went into making the Cybertruck could have gone into a vehicle that could have been affordable and appealed to a much wider consumer audience. The way the Supercharge firings were done a lack of common decency and professionalism. Not a good look for Tesla.

This action on the part of Tesla reeks of pure PANIC. Musk didn't layoff just a few select members of the Tesla team, he fired the entire supercharging department team. This has to freeze the expansion of the Tesla supercharging network going forward and will limit maintenance of the existing system. This is not only going to adversely impact Tesla sales going forward but, it will also adversely impact the other OEM EV sales. The other OEM that were in the process of changing over to the Tesla charging system now have nowhere else to go. They have to continue to rely on their own broke down inefficient systems that don't work. People could not rely on them in the past and now they can't even depend on Tesla's charging system going forward. A reliable efficient national supercharging system is critical for consumers to commit to purchase EVs in the future. Without it, the consumer will refuse to buy them.
This panic shutdown means that Tesla has serious financial issues. There is no other way to explain what has happened over the last few weeks. Personally, I was seriously considering the purchase of a new Tesla Model Y but not now and I may not ever consider it again. This is no way to run an automotive company or an industry. Tesla and the other OEMs are a bunch of assclowns. This isn't the end of the bad news coming out of Tesla or the EV industry. I am afraid that it is going to get much worse.

My opinion is the “downsizing” of the Supercharger team/project is directly related to the tremendous drop in EV sales across the board. Tesla was looking at a projection the number of EVs on the road and needing Superchargers and saw this has a heavy upfront cost that could shortly be a cash cow. However with the huge rejection of EVs that were overhyped and pushed by states and the federal government Tesla has reworked their figures to add Superchargers at a [much] slower pace. They can save a lot of overhead cost by reducing personal that focused on expanding the network. I suspect they are still keeping a core group to handle trouble shooting and repairs. I would not overreact to this change as it’s what a lot of other companies are doing at the moment recognizing the slowing economy across the board.

And the other automakers like GM who are still trying to get on the Supercharger network, that work just completely stalled. This could set back NACS adoption by a year. Any other CEO that did this would have been fired immediately. Is Tesla going to just shut off Ford and Rivian access one day with no warning? Not sure why this is a shock? Has nothing to do with slowing down their supercharger plans! If that's your take, you've not been paying attention very long! You'll see. Supercharger likely to get supercharged! LoL

Shouldn't any new SC stations that are built be the new V4 stalls? A new station was just built in my town at a gas station, and they were not V4. Is V4 still far from officially coming out?

Tesla did state that these layoffs reflect Organizational Change, not just a reduced headcount. Is the engineering has progressed to “Design Complete”, they can transition to continuous rollout. Shell and BP are now investing in Supercharger Infrastructure, using their own branding, namely Shell Recharge and BP Pulse. This is part of massive adoption using Fossil Fuel cash to fund this disruptive technology.

Hmm, I was waiting for this Tesla announcement: “As the NACS is now the new charging standard with agreement with our competitors we will make the Supercharger network a new public traded company.”

  • @iFrodoFr

They are just redesigning the Supercharging team altogether, and as key executives have been layed off, the entire team had to be layed off too, so that new executives can constitute the new team freely (including hiring back (very small) part of the layed off employees (I know people who have been layed off 2-4 times and hired back quickly after in the same company (big one too) in their career in the company)).
That’s not uncommon in that type of scenario (team complete redesign) particularly in the USA. The very flexible employment system of the USA allows to do that quite easily and this offer companies high flexibility for team redesign.
If they layed off only part of the team, the new executives would have to deal with the existing kept employees even though they didn’t chose them and so may have to lay-offs some of them (again) one by one. By laying off all the team and then hire new executives, those new executives can freely hire/choose the team members (including hiring back some of the layed-off people from the previous team, if they judge they can be helpful) they want to in the team.
So yes humanly it’s dramatic (but sadly that’s not that uncommon), but strategically the consequences will depend on the new team and the objectives/motivations of this team entirely redesign.

That's why many automakers are in no hurry to implement the NACS directly. I would say until other charging networks install cables equipped with it. It is an unnecessary business risk for their customers to be dependent on one provider (whose policies are unpredictable) or to be forced to use some kind of adapter.
The main reason will be money. It is possible that the business case is becoming unsustainable with so many people because sales numbers are lower than projected, and with it future demand for the network.

Maybe they are prepping that division for an IPO or a sale. The supercharger network was probably expensive to build and very expensive to run. A sale or IPO could bring in tens of billions. First, though, they need it to show a profit.

IMHO it's about the charging changes needed to allow for the the the higher power requirements. Tesla charging isn't going away it's just changing.

Two major headwinds impacting slowing US EV demand: 1) high interest rates, and 2) EV auto insurance rates. ICE owners switching to EVs are getting auto insurance rate 'Sticker Shock' despite Tesla offering self insurance. When you combine both these elements, plus the daily negative EV press, EV adoption becomes daunting.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a prelude to spinning the Supercharger group out into an independent company. It would make sense given how closely the group will have to work with rival automakers, who may need to reveal upcoming model plans and specs.

@tatata1543 and @softwarephil1709, they didn't fire the entire team. Shifting from an expansion mode to more of an operational mode is similar to what happened in streaming. Shedding headcount would boost EBITDA, which could make raising money easier. With everyone switching to the new standard, the Supercharger team can focus less on new locations and more on licensing tech and helping charging partners switch over.

Consider that it is now a month past the Q1 results. Perhaps the financials have continued to worsen? Cybertruck a money pit? Are there issues with Supercharger layout, tech, compatibility, or economics that suddenly became visible within the company?

Robotaxi requires self driving cars pull up to a super charger and recharge without human intervention. Maybe the current team didn’t understand that vision, fought the changes needed, so had to go.

The reason is simple - In a CyberCab world you don't need more Superchargers but more wireless chargers.
