    All I know is I have had several C5 corvettes, drove them every day, and had several 1000 mile trips in them both, averaged 26 mpg with a 6 speed manual, my last C5 had over 200,000 miles on it, all great cars, fun to drive, and easy to live with.

    • @irondino247
      @irondino247 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      TechPassion I’d say as reliable as it gets. The C5 has the LS1 which is notorious for being built like a tank and lasting easily up to 300k. There’s a guy on TH-cam with 600k miles with original motor.

    • @eric97909
      @eric97909 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Damn 200k miles? I’ve only heard of those numbers on older Accords, Toyota’s, and Volkswagens

      @TheDonCucaracho 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Would you choose a C5 over a C6 if both were about the same price/miles?
      I'm not your typical Corvette guy but I genuinely think the Vettes are the best sports cars you can get, aside from the Miata

    • @iwasadeum
      @iwasadeum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Same with the C6 I owned. Could easily manage 20-21MPG city (well not easily - with an exhaust note like that it's hard not to romp on it). Even when I was constantly romping on it I never saw below 16MPG. Took a 10 hour road trip and averaged 31MPG! They are absolutely lovely, livable cars that are incredibly well engineered performance machines. Great condition, sub-30K miles C6's are now starting to break into the sub-$20K price point, and C5 Z's can be had for about the same price. Absolute performance bargains.

      I learned to drive in a 300hp with like 600Nm diesel, it's cheating.. I didn't even need the throttle for hill starts, when I got my own car I stalled so many fucking times.

    • @TheGard3nGn0me
      @TheGard3nGn0me 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hallelujahmkay I went from a 1.6 Diesel Mini Cooper, so a 1.0 litre petrol (Because of crazy insurance in the UK), it was like driving a completely different transmission.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol, I argue the opposite. I think it's more beneficial to learn to drive stick on the hardest car possible. I learned on a car with almost no torque. It was a 2000 Honda CR-V 5-speed. 3300lbs and only 133lb-ft at a lofty 5500RPM. Sure it was hard and I stalled it about 3 dozen times, but after I mastered that car, every other manual car was super easy.

    • @splewy
      @splewy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Well yeah, obviously you want to get experience on as many cars as possible. I'm just saying that it's good to learn on a really hard manual car, because if you can master that, any other manual car is easy.

    DD'd one of these puppies for 2 years and loved every minute of it. Sold it to pay off student loans, but now am now looking to line up a C6 Z06 :)
    That '08 was truly a treat, though! Got better gas mileage than my Subaru Impreza around town, reliable as can be, very quiet freeway cruiser, and the ride really isn't rough at all (at least not as bad as a certain biased British motorshow would have you believe). The removable roof and a HUGE trunk. Just a wonderful, practical, liveable supercar.

      Charles McCabe It makes sense in a way. A big V8 engine doesn't have to work that hard to produce torque and power, whereas a small 4 cyl. in a Camry does. So to go from 65 to 70 mph is nothing for the V8 but a bit of work for the 4 cyl. Next, all of these cars have 6 speed transmissions with two overdrive gears, but 6th gear is a really low ratio, about 0.5. So on a regular highway these cars are turning just above idle in 6th gear, using little fuel. An S4's 6th gear is about 0.7, and is supercharged, and has AWD, so it's at a big disadvantage. Lastly, these are all aerodynamic cars. A C5 corvette has a drag ratio of about 0.29. So...Big V8 + gearing + aero means these GM performance cars need to do little work to propel the cars at highway speeds.

    From the c5 vettes and on are considered super cars. Very exotic lines and the power to back it up. 0-60 times at the highest was in the mid 4's some Aston Martins are in the 5's and they are considered supercars, so the vette should be aswell. Newer vettes also are quite good in the twisties on the same level with Ferrari ect.

    • @bobkilla430
      @bobkilla430 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I can respect that as a vette enthusiast. To a lot of people it does come down to price. The used c6s I'm looking at are $25k. If there's something you've driven with better performance or funner for that much, let me know because I'll test drive it. Other then price, I think its a great little group to be apart of. The stereotypes of vette owners are out there when I used to go to meet ups or vette events, but the majority of the people I met were pretty cool. However if I had 120+k it would be very difficult to not want to get an r8 because it's been a favorite of mine ever since it came out. The new c7 is up there in interior quality. Been in a new 911 and the t type. It matches the interior of the jag and is 7.8/10 compared to the Porsche. The jag is one hot looking car. It is destined to become a classic. There's a new 911 and a new vette at my gym, and IMO the vette wins in exterior looks. I'm hoping to someday drive a newish 911 because the main criticism on the vette vs 911 is the special feeling driving a 011. I'd like to see what it's all about.

    I very briefly tried on a blobby-ass C5 and ended up having a first-year C6 for a few years, in my late 20s because I didn't want to be 'that guy' at my current age... - it was a quite nice car, especially compared to the 5 (which seemed better planted on rough wet highway, but was inferior to the 6 in every other way). Said all that to say this: I think I do just casually like Corvettes. I tried to get way into it on the forums and things, but I think I was just the wrong demographic. I worked my ass off to barely afford the Vette as my only car; it wasn't my weekend plaything or what have you. But yeah, it was nice - smooth, powerful, comfortable, light on drama and easy on gas... but with all the gadgetry like the HUD, magnetic shocks and built-in navigation, it felt more James Bond cool, when I have found I prefer James Dean cool.

      Ok, other than the penis-car thing, great review. You should have mentioned that even if you never go over 2500rpm, you'll still probably beat everything. Also Chevy v Ford is stupid. I've had 2 vettes and a mustang GT and they're all real cars that you can use. Of course I'd take the vette over the mustang, more cargo room and 50% better gas mileage.

    • @somanymods
      @somanymods 10 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Brett Edson an a4 is not an s4 and a car being unreliable does not mean that your individual car will be unreliable it just means statistically it is more likely to have problems than the average car.

    The c6 is probably my next car if I can line up all my ducks. Interesting about your comment about the engine not really coming alive until 5k stock. My c5 ls1 was thrilling at lower rps all the way to redline. Granted I've not driven v8s from audi/bmw/mercs so maybe their engines feel much more accessible from lower rpms. Your defense toy right about 'you can't kinda just like vettes' while the interior will get crap, I've at least been inside m3s, c63s and yes they are much nicer inside. But the c6 is on par with a base 3 series or similar car, and the exterior looks well males up for the inside. The view from the drivers seat overlooking the long aggressive front males you feel like a kid at Christmas.....with over 400+hp. Thank you regular car guy for reviewing one of my favorite cars. Hopefully you'll one day test drive the c6z06 and the c7. The c6, very fast, quick,, awesome to look at, very fun, targa top, relatively cheap, relatively cheap to repair, but as you state, great fuel Econ and tons of room in the trunk. Add magnetic ride, and its a great dd for people not needing back seats.
