Guys, this goes for any country you're visiting: please be wary of overly friendly taxi people approaching you at stations offering rides. It's so easy to get scammed (overcharged) by them if you don't know the normal fare/rate. If you didn't have a chance to check it online, just ask one or two locals at the station what the normal rate is before getting in a cab. And whenever possible, take Uber instead. I know that wasn't an option.
Definitely should have asked another local, you're right. He was very keen to get us away from the locals and into his car as quickly as possible, which should have been a warning sign! I think we MAY have been involved in another scam when trying to leave Serbia, you'd think we would have learnt our lesson!
For those who's plannign the same route, you can actually walk across the roma-serb border. We were a caravan of Canadian writer, S.Korean school teacher, and a Mexican doctor and the border police was actually very chill. He even called a local brothel boss to pick us up and drive us to the nearest bus station (we tipped him $6 in Romanian currency).

In U.S. or Germany, you pay 20 euros/dollars for 1/3 of that journey on a Taxi or Uber. Even in Romania, a normal Taxi with it's meter ON would have costed at least that if not more. The only issue I see is that he was not a legal Taxi, but in Moravita there isn't a Taxi/Uber service. He also got you through the "unknown parts of the Serbian Customs", and they not being in EU, trust me, there are hidden parts related to corruption.
