Four Tet breaks down his live set in New York at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy.
Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) is one of electronic music’s most respected producers. As much as that comes from the tracks themselves, he’s garnered a reputation for having one of the most engaging live sets around. In this video, he breaks down how he builds his sets and reveals some of the secrets that make his performances so vibrant.

Ever wondered how Four Tet puts together his live set? You may want to take a look at this. #fourtet #cooleditpro ***** #midi -lifestyle
yo put up the whole unedited video!
@@titoson3669 was about to say the same! even willing to pay for unedited version :)
serioulsy...can you put the whole session up?
GOLD!!
Thanks 😎
What a humble and charismatic guy, surely he wouldn't drop some massive unrelated dubstep in the middle of his show
Damn HOL!
Especially not twice?!?
@@andrewkeating4801 thrice? Never
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@AUKronos Maybe like 3 or 4 times, just to tease. Lol😂
what a charming and unpretentious guy
+Dr Tune and so talented

Don’t ruin the 808 likes!
Yeah I don't buy it.
@@k.c.simonsen2 I fart in your general direction, Sir.
9 years later headlining at Coachella, his hard work paid off
He was already a very well established name in UK/European Electronic music circles prior to his collabs with Skrillex and Fred.
Nothing to see here
@@TheJacob95 Yes, headlined twice at India's leading boutique electronic fest
@@TheJacob95 people already know this. its a big deal that he's gaining US recognition
@@jessefobare2549 pretty funny, being worldwide famous: nah no biggie
US famous: woahh big deal!
I want to cry sometimes at how much of a genius hebden is
hahahahaha really? :)))
6:32 "I don't know much about ableton at all" - I wish we could all be this humble 😂❤
How can so many people look like they need caffeine at the Red Bull Music Academy?
best comment
🤣🤣🤣
So true lol
When we get over this pandemic I think humankind needs to focus on how to keep Kieran Hebden alive and producing music for eternity. The machines are nothing without him. 😍
his set at madison square garden has solidified his place in music history.
Now he's been known as the geezer standing behind Fred Again.. and Skrillex
Well this aged well :)
Aged like wine
Coachella was so fun
9 years later this guy plays Country Riddim on Coachellas main stage
Every time I see an interview with Kieran, he's super open and super honest about his work flow. I love it.
I love it when the tracks start doing relatively rhythmically interesting things.
Its legitimately the only bit of educational value you can get in this video. That hes amazed in what it does, when he just plays around with things lol
@@azhiazim you are very narrow minded i hope u change and figure out what music actually is
Only he understands what he is doing.
why wasn't four tet my music teacher.
3:27 still using cooledit hahaaa what a legend!
and a netbook with Windows XP.
"Best programm ever" :-DD
I love how simple he keeps everything. He has a lot of devices, but everything has its own function and it's all laid out in such a sensible way. Very inspiring!
FT is putting back poetry, magic and randomness into the sometimes over technical business of music.
Just putting back humanity into music.
I love this guy
i never would have guessed four tet would have a set up like this. it's great to see artists with their own unique setup for specific reasons. if this isn't the full video, i would like to see more!
I'm so glad this kind of stuff is being uploaded for people to see! Thank you RBMA!
no one in that room would predict his coachella set 10 years on with fred again
I love his loop manipulations.
So cool.
whys no one else smiling and stoked like him wtf
See him live!!! Either doing his tunes or DJing its always a great time!
been listening and following Four Tet for a while now - simply beautiful in every way - thank you for the music!
It's so refreshing to see quality producer using PC rather than Mac. At end of the day it's not what you use but how you use them.
Now this is actually a creative person.
The way he squeezes the time signature tempo randomness a real artist
What an awesome work flow. He really figured out how to do it his way. Inspiring stuff.
omg I love cool edit so much! so glad to see it still being used in a pro setup!
What a lovely, talented human being x
yeeeaaah been waiting for this my whole life !!!
one of my favourite artists.
building the tension that way is brilliant
I've been a fan of Four Tet for many years but that was unique, intimate and VERY informative - AND inspirational! Such a cool vibe from music, the equipment and the artist :)
Now that is how you talk about your live setup. Thank you.
Absolute maestro, musical genius. Now livin life with the recognition he deserved from the beginning. #PHM 💎🎶
Best masterclass ever!
This is great. We need more stuff like this.
You bring a whole new meaning to blowing off steam
SP-303 such an amazing piece of gear. Worth it for just the onboard effects... but also can be used as a looping/sequencer machine. The vinyl compression effect on it is GOAT
inspiring video! thank you kieran
super, super, super inspiring
A lot of wisdom and creativity here.
In all honesty, it's worth pointing out. Nice to see an artist doing his own thing, from the ground up (including his OS)
Angel echoes is such a beautiful song.
great insight into live, looping, electronic performance
Wonderful glimpse at an incredible mind
man this was sick!
wow great great video here. thanks so much for posting.
Brilliant vid, cool to see him using a 303
I always assumed the monome was for full on ableton control but it’s basically a second playground set for him while he controls the stems of the songs with the computer itself which is nuts ! Plus that little looper thing I wish more things were made like that
he broke my mind with it ))
"and I can do stuff with it, yeah?"
Love this guy!
idk why but this makes me emotional
Really enjoyed this
Would love to see the whole video...
I used to play with a guy who largely based his whole setup around that click-loop thing in CoolEdit haha. He used the Korg ER-1's audio input (just like the SP-303's but sequenceable) for it.
grande 4tettissimo! great music and vibe!
Inspiration station
Brilliant set-up. I always love seeing the Roland SP-303 in someone's arsenal. I love that machine.
Could I ask what you like about it, and is it good for performing live? Fourtet seems to just be triggering a sample with it here.
@@Tapepusher The new SP-404 MK2 is a much better machine for performing live. It does everything the 303 does plus much more
Making Music by using his creativity. Genius ;)
THIS VDIEO CHANGED MY LIFE
3:55 lol dudes just got an old wavvy ass comp to mad cick for live glitches. lol legend.
Love four tet!
It's smart to have more than one channel very nice video thanks for sharing! Love from India
Cool Edit!? That's what got me started 15 years ago.
Got to love his mousemat
The most important, talented and innovative musician/producer of the last 15 years. Constantly in awe of this guy.
hmm, u sure ? :P
J Dilla
😂 that’s a good one
😅 Let's try not to sound too crazy now..
this was really helpful!!
first major producer without an apple...thumbs up!
OMG I LOVE YOU FOUR TET
Wow... There are people who were simply born to create music
love how he's using these dinky little laptops.
+Victor Kim Kind of puts paid to the annoying myth that you need lots of ridiculous machines to make good music.
+MrBoxingVideos well, to be fair, he probably has a bunch of ridiculous machines in his studio. He is drawing on a wide swath of prerecorded material for this live setup.
If that's what you think then so be it.
MrBoxingVideos actually I looked into it, and it appears he does almost everything "in the box", so to speak. So you're right, he doesn't use extravagant gear to make his music.
Andrew Gerrand yeah fourtet is just a random genius, incredible ear. Rounds was recorded on some shitty PC into cool edit pro with one of those built in usb mics into the stock sound card. And when he “masters” his tracks, he says he just throws on a limiter until it sounds good LOL
that was great thanks
Heads bobbing all around.
He’s so dope
GENIUS!!!
Ten years ago this was posted and I’m watching him with Fred Again and Skrillex in Times Square. What he produces is unreal. He’s so insanely talented. Seems like a really nice guy too
i must have watched this video 50 times by now
Legend
God I love this dude. He should teach classes.
Cool edit forever!!!
Love those laptop selections
total hero!!
cheers buddy!
Four Tet is the boss!!
True that! the legend
I love his mouse mat!
Ide wanna be so baked watching four-tet create a track
I always felt I should learn to use Live to perform…now I'm sure of it!
this dude is a lunatic, it is so incredible
this video is the testimony that you don't need anything out of reach ... you need talent
Like untrue being made in soundforge
Nah, you need to put in the work, long hours and staying determined to push forward. Talent is overrated
@@gfshoyu2565 talent can be bred from passion and effort
@@willbournerv2259 burial is just playing y’all with that one 😂😂😂😂 he used a proper daw
@@Lovecore802 not really the point whether it was or wasn't. why would he lie anyway? everything else he said in his interviews is verifiably true
He's awesome
you are the man
Totally cool with it.
Angel echoes, one of my fave songs :D
Four Tet explaining his way of doing live set with controllers, Cool Edit Pro and Ableton Live. Instructing.
Cool Edit!!!!
This was the first time I put together that Angel Echoes samples Bjork's The Anchor Song, long before Justin Martin took note and started playing one of my favorite unreleased remixes of all time
oh yea this song live! wooo!
Claire Daines is into it.
Matt Greer 😂
My So-Called Tutorial.
also Aubrey Plaza
She loves her Techno
