How To Make A - Legowelt - Track

  • Legowelt has been putting other house and techno producers to shame since the the 1990s.
    The Dutch artist releases music at a rate of knots - there’s been at least nine albums under the Legowelt name alone now, and he has over 30 different aliases, all of which interact in weird, wonderful ways. His music has appeared on labels as disparate as Unknown to the Unknown and Cocoon, and he’s got a reputation as a real studio wizard - not only due to the hardware in the studio, but the sample packs and plugins that he gives out for free online. On top of that, he’s about as unpretentious as it’s possible to get.
    In this video, FACT and DJ Haus - who, as previously mentioned, has released Legowelt records on his Unknown to the Unknown label - get to watch Legowelt make a track from scratch, using a combination of his own patches and sample packs, a tape player and more. It’s no surprise that he makes it look easy, is it?
    Even better, we’ve had the track mastered and Legowelt is letting us give it away: / legowelt-institute-of-...

    great vid, but there were loads of fx added to the track before he dumped it to tape - delay to the 303, eq/compression on the drums, sidechaining. the way the vid plays makes it seem like dropping it to tape suddenly made it sound like gold. if only it were that easy haha :P either way, really cool peek into his flow.

    Honestly, for the first 16 minutes I was listening to this thinking it was pretty horrible, then suddenly he put it through the tape machine and it magically came together for me. I even jumped between the times on the video to check what I was hearing. What a transformation that brings - very cool!

    • @ionturcanu7486
      @ionturcanu7486 3 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      The song is definitely mixed and mastered at the end, it's not just the tape machine.

    • @jovantrendmaker4722
      @jovantrendmaker4722 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes because first 16 minutes you were listening what its comming from his speakers thru mic because they were recording him speak. After you jear audio directly from ableton thats why such difference

    • @plssmellmycheese
      @plssmellmycheese 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes totes agree...not so much the sound being messy, but the actual music/ tune/ groove was really messy! i guess you need the mess in the process to make it interesting and not generic, and lo and behold, sounds great by the end! 👍👍

      @thatmr.a8010 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Disagree totally as well. Kind of a bullshit comment as well "oh it's the analogue tape thingy that made it awesome!" No. From the start you could tell that there was some Legowelt magic dust going on, just unpolished. By the time the track was ready for tape it was already gold. It's not the tape that makes a Legowelt track. Legowelt makes a Legowelt track. Pure magic!

    i like his idea of music, his music and composition conception, when he speak about music is very interesting to hear it because music for me is a practice and a philosophy. I have been practicing a lot of (i studied licenciature in music) every day, making scales, recording and listening my own things but some day i thought that music is more than music, think that music is a ritual practice of humans vey like a door, maybe portal where the person who is making this noise is experimenting opening planes and suffering transformations, expansión of his being, that is to say in his senses where we can ask ourselves about aesthetic practices, ask us from education, political, philosophy, music and arts.

    I love when he puts the 3.5 mm jack into the side of the laptop to record TH-cam 14:08. I always think "Damn i'm such an amateur" when I do that, seems like other people do too though haha.

    • @sambritt2672
      @sambritt2672 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait so 3.5 jack from audio interface into computer you can then record straight from TH-cam into Ableton?

    • @RTCLR123
      @RTCLR123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sambritt2672 if the laptop has audio in, otherwise it could be that he plugged 3,5 out(line out) from laptop to the interface which than routed the youtube sound thru interface(via usb) back to a ableton recorder.. just speaking my mind
      I do it differently, i route a youtube output to a interface mixer channel and route it again to Fl studio or Audacity lets say and record it that way
      All it needs is a playfull mind and it will figure out by itself, just watch for those loopbacks and your ears

    When the 4 on the floor drums started I was thinking, "God, don't ruin those great sounds with that crap", but the production and finished product was really nice. Pretty simple streamlined workflow too, great stuff.
