  • In this video we'll be going over the history of one of the oldest RC brands out there, Kyosho. Also yes I realize I didn't mention that Losi Jr spent some time with the Kyosho Racing team. I mentioned it in the Losi video so be sure to check that out.

Nostalgia just hit hard. The Scorpion was my first RC car and I got it for christmas some time in the late 80s. I remember helping my dad put it together and driving it for the first time. Miss you Pops. Thanks for the memories.

My schoolmate raced his Scorpion (which he called the "Cox Scorpion") in an RC car race during a field trip for the Industrial Arts program. I raced my Nichimo Exceed and our other schoolmate raced his Tamiya Fox. There were no electronic transponders back then, and they used judges to manually keep track of which car was actually winning. Because the race course had a lot of turns and short straightaways, my 4WD Exceed had an advantage over the 2WDs and I got 2nd place. My schoolmate's Fox got 3rd, and the Scorpion did not place.
In retrospect, his Kyosho/Cox Scorpion was actually the best car out of the 3 from our school.
The Fox owner later got a Turbo Optima and I later got a JRX2.

The Ultima was my first real competitive buggy....i broke into the hobby in 85 with a Tamiya Fox, but it was clear that platform had its limits, so in 86 i picked up an Ultima ......i did very well at local club races in the Chicago area in that Ultima, and even better when i swapped out the aluminum chassis for a carbon fiber pan....and a lot of RC10 drivers were frosty about that Ultima. I still have it to this day. Another great video my friend, keep up the great content.

Very interesting. But a bit light on the details on how much of an influence Kyosho had on the 1/10 off road classes in the 80s. The Optima in 1985 was very much a factor in why to this day we have 4wd and 2wd drive classes of racing and not stock and modified . The Ultima was a 2wd drive version of the Optima and both were very much class leaders. The design of the ultima was right up there, so much so that Losi copied the front end for the JRX2. The Optima, Ultima and Lazer designs all have a massive influence on the 1/10 cars of today.

Yup, I had two of the early dune buggies and the earlier pan car with a Porsche 917 Lexan body. The first one had heavy solid rubber tires and the second one had lighter foam tires. Eventually I made my own balsa body for the chassis in the shape of the Tyrrell 003.

When I first got into RC, there were only three cars to choose if you wanted to race competitively- RC10, Ultima, or Optima. That’s how it was at my local track anyway. There were other cars but they were slow or fragile or both.

My adolescent, and teenage years were spent in the 80's and 90's and from what I remember Kyosho was a brand that was like the holy grail to me. 1 they were hard to find, and 2 they were expensive compared to their counterparts. I ended up driving a losi buggy and truck and loved the available parts at my local hobbyshack that later evolved into hobby people. I always wanted Kyosho but it seemed you had to be a factory driver to get your hands on one in southern California where I grew up. All the same losi built very competitive vehicles, and I never regretted not owning a Kyosho. And today you still can't get a hold of Kyosho unless you buy online and willing to pay big bucks. Cool video and old footage you found. Keep it up. I understand what it is to be underfunded and wanting to create good content for the masses. Subd and liked! 🥂

Just got myself a Kyosho nitro 1/8 on ebay for 200 bucks. Absolute ripper. I'm surprised it still runs and drives like new despite it clearly was from the 90's with all original parts (besides my upgraded receiver and controller)

Interesting vid, thanks! I can still remember when the Burns appeared on the market, totally different from what I'd seen before, I had an old PB Racing Mustang 1/8 rallycross, as more people bought and raced the new Kyosho Burns , it was clear very quickly that a new level of performance was here to stay, it was a clear divide... I ended up with an Inferno several years later and still have it to this day, amazing RC.

My first RC was the Kyosho Assault. It was similar to the phase 20 Baja but it had a lexan body instead of roll bars. Rail chassis OS .12 all cast aluminum. It was designed very similar to a VW bug.

Razor... I've been a fam of your channel a long time.... I've always had AE cars as far as 2wd stuff, and lately my son has Tekno 4wd and now 8th scale...I got an ET410 now myself... but I've recently been bitten by the Retro/Vintage bug.
I picked up a Kyosho Turbo Optima ReRe kit, yet to be built... and also an Ultima which I've raced a couple times, starting with racing it in the Hank Perry 240 race...a race that started in 1987, the same year the Ultima swept the world's 2wd podium.
I'm now hooked, and a big Kyosho fan! I have a few Tamiya kits on the list/shelf, but I really want to get me some more of the Kyosho Legendary Series stuff now....
If you can, pick up one or two of them...they'd make great content for your videos, and I'm sure they'll make for quite a few smiles as well....
      Cheers!

      -Nickel-Cadmium battery backs with 1200 milli-amp-hour capacity
      -Brushed motors
-Most cars still had mechanical speed controllers, as ESCs were a new thing
      -Spiked tires
      -Big front bumpers
      -Gear covers and sealed transmissions
-Classic Kyosho Optima sold for $150
-Classic RC10 (called just the "RC10") sold for $125
-You could upgrade very single part on the original RC10 and make a whole new car just from aftermarket parts
-RC land speed record was 56 mph

Nice video! My first hobby RC car was a Kyosho Outlaw Rampage Pro (2wd nitro stadium truck). It was a blast. The tranny was weak, but it really lit my interest. I still have the truck, but it’s been converted to electric and it has a different tranny in it now. I eventually got an Inferno (used 1st generation RTR version…as a rolling chassis from eBay), converted it to electric and beat on it for years. It never once broke. Once my friends and I discovered 8th scale buggies, we never really went back to 10th scale. They are beasts.

Excellent excellent excellent video, I enjoy your videos regardless of the topic due to the way you speak and the clarity of your messages. You know how it is for us racers were always wrenching on stuff and not like to have videos and stuff playing in the background. Not to mention that I'm a rabbid avid Kyosho 1/8 racer here at Phil Hurd Raceway , Savannah, Georgia. And there's a few of us that are my teammates and we race together and we're nothing but #teamkyosho. I think our nitro platforms and electric platforms are just as competitive and advanced as the next, and like your underdog comment and them doing their things their own way I like that too that's what originally drew me to them. But I'll quit rambling thanks for the video

They try to take the best of both and make a buggy. I run 10th scale 2 and 4 wd and 8th nitro Kyosho buggies and ina skilled drivers hand (which I am not the most skilled) they some of the fastest on the track. Thanks for sharing.

My paper routine budget couldn't afford it. 😂 I just recently got back into the hobby and was surprised they don't have that same presence they once did. I'm sure they are laughing all the way to the bank with their overpriced Mini-z line. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I have kids in the hobby and real income now. Kyosho's kind of missing the boat.

I do not consider the classic Ultima as the "true 1987 world champion", since Joel Johnson's winning car had less than 50% stock Ultima parts. I would say that the true 1987 world champion was a custom Kyosho Ultima. The Ultima RB6 is the only true 1/10 scale world champion from Kyosho.

as a youngster having grown up running kyosho and even being locally sponsored while running kyosho i never thought i'd say this but i don't think I'll ever buy another kyosho rc after see what i got for my money when i bought a mad van ve which was a semi toy grade rc with a brushless setup that kyosho knew the car as they were selling wouldn't be able to handle the power. How do i know they knew it couldn't handle the power, because for every part that is too weak to handle the power there is an upgrade HD part listed in the back of the manual that comes with the car, a manual that was printed before they sold the first ma van ve, kyosho built the mad van ve to sell, not to run....

Japanese companies have a completely different goal to chase than the western world. For example when Traxxas had a big boom for the Slash, no one in Japan was interested. Still you cant find much demand for them. I worked in the hobby industry in Japan from 2006 to 2016 and saw the trends most of them were completely different than the trends happening in the west. Its almost a magical moment when Japan and the west have the same trend these days.
