I was racing when the first conversion kits for the RC10 and JRX2 came out to convert them to what is now a stadium truck. Personally I have a Losi XXT on the shelf but I never raced it. If you have not already done a video on Marui that may be a cool topic. They have a small niche in RC history. I only ever saw one Ninja at a race track back in the 80's but I know a lot of people liked the models.

The car you see running around the dirt track in the first portion of this video iappears to be an RPS SE sold by the Ranch Pit Shop owned by Gil Losi Sr and driven by his son Gil Jr. It was based of the yokomo yz834b but had a more rigid chassis than the 834b. Thr Rps se came with better shocks, new body, and different tires. Since it was sold by the Ranch Pit Shop, technically, it's the first team losi kit they sold. And before they made their first "proper" car that had the team losi name on it, the JRX, they made parts for other cars under the "Team Losi Performance" name..motors were called the Revolution motors. I believe in 1986 they split it into 2wd and 4wd buggies for the 1/10 scale as far as ROAR was concerned.
Good video.... but when talking about the 2wd buggy class, and you mentioned the Tamiya buggies, and the Scorpion...then you got to the RC10...and said it really didn't have any competition until the Losi or.... I'm honestly shocked you didn't mention the Kyosho 2wd that followed the Scorpion/Turbo Scorpion/Tomahawk/Beetle...which all shared basically the same chassis....although the Turbo Scorpion had a couple updated parts and a slightly longer wheelbase and wider stance... In 1987, at the 2nd ever world's, a car came out that was touted as "the next world champion"...some people scoffed at this and didn't think anything would beat the RC10... During the '87 worlds...the Kyosho Ultima not only managed to hang with the RC10, bit it was driven to a complete sweep.pfntje podium, taking the TQ, as well as 1st, 2nd, AND 3rd place on the podium... The RC10 did in fact have some competition before Losi and others managed to get them to see a need to make the B2... Cheers...
The hobbyplex has a really strong mini truggy class. They're nice as a second class paired with stadium truck because they seem to like really scuffed in tires, so I don't have to buy any new ones for it, just my use my old ones of of the truck
Wow I could talk for hours about this topic!!! Most of what you talk about I’ve owned or still own from the Frog to the SC4x4 that was belt driven witch was a awesome machine I still have it and it’s still a joy to drive and it’s so smooth. Love your videos!!!
PR RACING makes a minitruggy as well the SB401-RT so there are 3 manufacturers making them. Also when Stadium trucks started it was the Losi JRX-T first then came the Traxxas TRX-T Eagle 89/90 Associated didn't release the RC10T till the summer of 91. Kyosho also released the Outlaw Ultima stadium truck in the Fall of 90 but it was entry level not many raced it. Schumacher also released the Shotgun in 91 the only belt driven 2wd truck. People also raced Tamiya Nissan King Cabs and Toyota Hi Lux in the beginning stadium truck racing as well until the JRX-T and TRX-T became the dominant trucks to have. Great video loving this history series it takes me back to when I got started in the hobby!
AWESOME! First time I've seen the Marui Big Bear mentioned in years. Mine still sits on my shelf fully stock and fully functional. Love the way it's drives but I can't because parts just ain't available the way they used to. Thx for the video :^)
The big Bear was pretty cool back then at it's price point it looked to be very fun. I was more intrigued by the marui Ninja tho. Both difficult to find spares for.
Do you remember the RC manufacture or "rebrander" ? ROYAL. They did two vehicles, one was the 4x4x4 buggy called the Royal Ripper, and the other was a 4x4x4 monster truck, called the Royal Crusher. Both shared the same chassis and drive line ad suspension systems, and simply changed the tires and the body and accessories to mount the body.
Fun and interesting vid... Made me realise I know rc history better than I'd have thought and as I remember everything mentioned also made me realise just how old I'm getting.... Doh!
When I raced my JRX2 indoors in northern Delaware in 1990, the 2WD stock truck class was the most popular. It was more fun to race against a larger number of competitors. 4WD modified buggy was the least popular. More things could break on a 4WD, and racing at the faster speeds on a small indoor track made collisions more likely.
This brings back a lot of rc memories. I originally got into rc with a kit version of the Traxxas Cat. This time period was also a couple years before the stadium truck craze started.
@@murrijuana2842 I will agree with you about the current Traxxas stuff. But the Traxxas of the golden era had a different mindset and a passion for quality racing rc's. That is all they made.
Great video, 2wd stadium trucks are making a come back here in the UK while short course numbers have fallen quite dramatically over the years but are still quite popular for bashing. Some of the modern cab forward designed bodies for the 2wd stadium trucks are just damn right ugly though, so they need to sort that out
I appreciate the video. Is there any way you can sync the audio with clips and images of the vehicles being discussed? Something about my brain makes it hard to listen to you talk about 1970s 2WD Tamiyas as I watch a 1980s 4WD Yokomo... but I'm kinda special ;)
Then another clever and interesting rig, was the HIGHROLLER, by MRP, I believe it was MRP? It was a monster truck, with 4 yellow coil over shocks per corner and a seal tub chassis to keep dirt out of the drive line. it was independent suspension on all four corners. Although it looked really cool, it was a top heavy fragile drive line parts. Please note, there is a NEW release of the title "HIGH ROLLER" that is of the past 5 to 8 years ago, that is not the one, this unit I speak of was from the late 80's. to very early 90's..
what part of Georgia do you live in im really looking into getting into racing i have a team assoiciated t4.2 and im buying upgrades for it and fix it but i dont know where to go i live in north Georgia but nothing is around here so i was wondering if you knew of some places i also have a traxxas slash 2wd vxl stock but i just dont know how to start.
Looking around the closest tracks to you are going to be in the Carolinas and Tennessee. Unfortunately there aren't any off-road tracks in north Ga which I find kind of odd.
@@RoachRC we're talking about which car was the competition for the RC10, the scorpion or the Ultima. Once the Ultima came out the scorpion went the way of the slash.
@@RoachRC the Ultima was popular especially after it swept the podium at the 87 IFMAR Worlds. Kyosho was huge back then compared to the last few years the track battles between ASSOCIATED and KYOSHO were great when LOSI came around it got even better. Kyosho started to fall off in the 2wd class in the 91 Worlds by not making the mains with their new car the Triumph to challenge the never produced ASSOCIATED Stealth car. The same thing happened in 93 with the PRO-X which they hired former LOSI designers to make which strongly resembled the JRX-PRO from what many people have said in the industry. After that Kyosho pulled the plug on competitive 10th scale kits and racing teams except for 8th scale until the early 2000's when the Ultima returned as the Ultima RB.

I had a shaft driven 4 wd buggy in the mid 80’s…. Had two shafts running on the outside of the chassis. Crazy design. Was not hobby grade however.

The tamiya frog was my first real buggy. Lots of good memories here watching these videos!

My 1st RC car ever was the Losi JuniorT. Me and some buddies built a backyard track to race each other.

Loving your series. PR Racing is another brand that makes a mini Truggy to compete with the Tekno et410s.

It was, but the Ultima wasn't as popular as the RC10, not by a long shot.
