first tip: make sure your Les Paul is in tune. 2nd tip: make sure your amp has Master volume for bedroom use. 3rd tip: assemble pedal board as you acquire more pedals. take any other monies available and buy golf balls.
It's official, my golfing buddies, who are 30 yrs younger than me, hate me.I have been watching your videos for little over 3 weeks now and have now played 3 rounds using your system. Fist week shot an 88, second week shot a 78 and today 75 all from the back tees. I changed over to a neutral grip and slowed down my swing and I discovered magic. I need to work on my putting. Putting has been the achilles heel in my game for years.
I have been doing it for a few weeks. I am getting great rotation and I haven’t been able to get my hips and shoulders turning very far for a long time but now I am getting a full turn with my arms over my shoulders at the end. I am pretty amazed.
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed it!! Here is an impromptu "lesson" featuring Bill, a member at my local club who is in his 80's: th-cam.com/video/Lb1D2BUrmNU/w-d-xo.html By the way, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing, experience great ball striking, and reclaim - or even exceed - yardages from years past. I hope you'll give the school some thought. Tom
I'm 65 and I've been using S&T for a couple of years now. No more back pain, no more swaying, consistent 220-240 yd drives. Learning to use the driver was the hardest part but I hired an S&T instructor and found the magic. Golf is fun again. I don't have a single regret. Whenever it seems to fall apart simply go back to the basics, Weight Forward, Arms Straight, Hands In, Shoulder Down, Hips Tucked (follow-thru). Very simple swing thoughts. My putting on the other hand....
Exactly. I’m 69 and a subscriber to Tom’s instruction channel. I like simple, effective and uncomplicated, techniques. His method just works and I’ve gotten amazing results. Really becoming a solid ball striker. The ball just flies straight at my target. Golf is a lot more fun when that happens. Thanks to Tom. He has really helped me!! Best instructor on TH-cam.
You’ve helped my game tremendously. I went out on a 18 I couldn’t even get an iron into the air. Played 18 after two weeks of practicing using your methods and was an entirely different person out there. Thanks 🙏

Tom, you like to say that life is too short to play bad golf, but when I’m playing bad golf and not having fun, time drags on. But now that you have me playing so much better, I’m having fun and time flies by. So by improving my game and the ‘fun factor’, you’ve shortened my life! Thanks a lot! I mean it, thank you very much.
LOL! Interesting perspective on the time-space-golf continuum, Gerald.....😆😆 I’m very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. I didn’t want to follow yet another TH-cam golf instructor, but I did it anyway. I used your methods during today’s range time and I was extremely pleased with the results. I significantly reduced the thins and chunks and enjoyed a successful range outing after work. It was the most productive range time over the last 3-4 weeks. 👍
I appreciate that and I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing! By the way, with regard to watching different videos from different sources, please be careful in navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction. That is not a dig against any other teachers out there. It's simply best to commit to a system - whether it be this body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance method or another - put your blinders on, and stick to it. @@SagutoGolf I just finished 4 months of golf lessons with a major golf school. I won’t say the name. I’ve gained about 25 yards with my driver, irons and woods. I’ve also gone from not knowing which direction my ball would go to either a straight shot or draw. The problem is they’re extremely expensive and I’m not in a position to spend another $2K for 4 months of lessons. I’ve been thinking about your school for continued instruction, but I’m afraid somewhere along the line it may undo something I’ve recently learned. So my plan is to continue watching your TH-cam videos to ensure that your method continues to compliment what I’ve already learned. If this continues, I will join your school for ongoing instruction.
It’s like you read my mind. Struggling with driver? You drop a driver lesson and now I’m barely missing fairways (only 2 missed in each of my last 2 rounds!). My biggest miss has been a chunk recently, now you release this. Can’t wait!
LOL! Yeah - I'm out there watching you.. Always. Tom, you're doing a tremendous job, so good that I recently joined your school (under another name). I joined not only because of your teaching and the humor sprinkled therein, but also because I believe I saw you wearing the brown scapular. Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

I have gone back to basics in my swing watching your video. Concentrating on the turn and keeping the arms connected. One thing I never concentrated on and am not using is the flexibility of the wrists. While not exceeding the basics. What a difference when the wrists can load and extend the arc. Even works better on the long irons as the 5/4 iron needs speed to work effectively . But the results are phenomenal . I do not need to many swing thoughts as you never progress of you are not confident
I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play. With regard to the wrists, if we pre-establish the connections properly in the setup and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot (and without any need for conscious thought). The power accumulators - including the proper arm, wrist, and hand action - will then naturally load and fire with no contrived manipulations or precise timing necessary, thereby returning the face to the position pre-established at address. It's called "giving up control to gain control", and it's the formula for consistently blissful ball striking and seemingly effortless power. Here are a few lessons on this topic: - th-cam.com/video/1FLm67Fn81M/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/RfH96tUn6ls/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/Gm_RtSHbH8c/w-d-xo.html Thanks so much for sharing your improvement and keep up the great work!! 💪💪 Tom PS: By the way, since my channel's content is connecting well with you, perhaps you might also enjoy my FREE mini course - “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”?: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews
Thank you ! I really need to ingrain this into my swing so that I do not doubt myself with too many thoughts . That’s my goal for info you were right about the 4 iron swing and back to basics .
I wish I would change my swing many years ago!! I might have broken 90 by now. I dedicated last year to changing my swing and I ready to finally break 90. More importantly, I am ready for a consistent swing. Crispy divots are also nice!! I have shown my wife a few of these videos and I have seen the change in her swing. I love seeming her on the golf course and I live watching her smile when she makes nice crisp contact.
Well, Carlos, it's still better to know this now rather than many years from now, right?? 😎 I am very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you and your wife; excellent job incorporating it into your swings and putting it into play. 💪💪 Thanks so much for sharing your and her improvement, keep it crispy, and have fun out there!! I wish you all the best for a Blessed, Healthy, Happy, Birdie-filled 2024 that sees you enjoying the best golf of your life! Tom
superb. swing looks fantastic. left hand and arm control is certainly the key. and, swinging with just my left arm has helped me to stay more on my left side. when the heel pad of the left hand establishes control you can feel it pulling the left side of the head down, towards the top of the backswing, directing force into the left shoulder helping it to move down and around. really helps to get the ball rolling if you hold the club out to your left and then press the heel pad of your left hand in front of the clubhead. really enjoy doing that drill. always had a really weak left hand; but, i have develped much more control by swinging with just my left hand.
I appreciate that! And yes - I think the one-handed swing drills are excellent for grooving correct actions that we may not necessarily feel with both hands on the club. Thanks for sharing! Tom
Is my swinggonna hold up - love that:) Glad I wasn’t the only one that thought that way - now I repeat the steps in my mind weight on front leg, turn hips, straight lead arm
Happy new year Tom and thanks for the refresher. It's been experimental/silly season for me over the last couple of months. My game has been sometimes good and sometimes terrible. Watching too many golfers with extreme grips, transitions etc and trying these out for myself. Everyone from Fred Couples to Gary Player. Like you say Tom, they all lead to inconsistencies. Thank you for repairing my swing.
Thanks Steve - I appreciate that! With regard to those Tour players of today and yesteryear, we must remember that it took them years and countless swings day in and day out to hone their craft and get their respective idiosyncratic swings dialed in to the extent that they have. That's a testimony to their hard work, determination, and perseverance. I do occasionally share some elements of various top players' swings that we would do well to emulate or avoid. However, just like them each of us is unique physiologically and psychologically, and we should thus endeavor to build our unique-to-us swing recognizing that fact while also preferably residing within the parameters of a proven, reliable, consistent, powerful, body-friendly *_SYSTEM._* This is one reason why the comprehensive, structured, step-by-step learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why It will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through various videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Here's a link if you have not yet enrolled and would like to learn more about the school - saguto.golf Thanks for your ongoing support. I wish you all the best for a Blessed, Healthy, Happy 2024 that has you enjoying the best golf of your life! Tom

Keeping the upper portion of the arms - especially the lead arm - glued to your rib cage is super critical to achieving consistency (I believe this was part of a prior SG lesson). I recalled this little tidbit while on the range last year and it instantly improved my ball striking. Love your content, keep up the great work!
Yes - the connections with both arms is critical as they eliminate many variables and make for an easily repeatable motion that produces predictable ball striking and shot shape results. I sincerely appreciate your kind words, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! Excellent video Tom on how to never hit fat shots again! My take on all of this, is to stay centered over the ball and having a predictable contact point and rotation through the ball! I like your Elvis "swivel hips" interpretation toward the end of this video! Well Done Tom! Always enjoy your videos!!!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, John, and I appreciate your ongoing support of my instruction content!! With regard to the King (of rock and roll), it's really a simple equation: Mastery of Golf = Control of the Hips; Elvis = Master of the Hips; Sideburns = Elvis; Sideburns = Mastery of Golf Thank you. making it sound SO simple. Ole swivel hips. Great demonstration....so good I think even I could do this. All these comments about "is this ok for seniors" Your swing looks so compact it should work for all ages. Winter homework will be fun with these pointers

Hi Tom. Thanks for this video. My number one swing fault are fat shots. When I swing at 60%, I usually hit the ball clean (ball then divot). However, whenever I try to speed things up that is when things go wrong. I feel like my right hand overpowers everything and that is when I hit a fat shot. I'm going to work on the method you show in this video. Thanks much!

Thanks Martin, and sorry to learn about your ankle. Yes - grass is undeniably better, since it replicates what you be hitting off while on the course. If mats are your only option, then just know that they tend to do a great job of masking poorly struck shots. In this regard, here are a couple of different suggestions that can help you discern between crispy and soggy impact: 1) Get yourself an old hand towel and fold it in half. Place it no more than 2 inches behind your ball, thereby requiring you to miss the towel and make ball first contact on your downswing. As you improve, move the towel closer to the ball. The small thickness of a one-half folded towel will not impede your backswing takeaway. 2) If you can, put down a thick chalk line or some inexpensive spray foot powder on the mat about an inch in front of the ball. Try to hit the ball first and then the chalk or powder. The mark on the mat - or lack thereof - will give you instant visual feedback. Having said that, I do enjoy my Real Feel Country Club Elite mat that you'll see me using in the backyard videos when I'm hitting into the net. It's closer to the feel of actual turf than any other mat I've hit off of, and it's extremely durable. If interested for your home practice station you can visit them here - www.RealFeelGolfMats.com. Thank you for all of your videos. Your teachings are easy to understand. Because of body issues at 80 years old, it is: " But be doers of the word, and not hearers only". You mentioned using your hips in order to add speed to a golf swing. I equate "to add speed" as a forceful action. When does this occur? At the same time as the shoulders are starting their downswing or just prior to the downswing? Is there a video that addresses this issue?
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, Francis, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! A well-executed swing is a correctly sequenced orchestration of actions. How we individually sense these actions is as unique as each of us is. This is why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. For example, the sequential lessons and drills of my online school provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. With regard to the hips, when properly deployed in the correct manner our hips are a tremendous source of power. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Here are some lesson videos specific to this topic: - th-cam.com/video/Us6jSgMvJmM/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/dB4ItR3guGU/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/w-d-xo.html By the way, you may be interested to know that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. Can't tell you how much I love watching this session. My one question is how and when do you gauge the left hip movement toward the target. Need a sense of when in the downswing my left hip reaches max move to target. As always thanks coach-you are the best. Have a GREAT 2024-Russ
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Russ! The lateral targetward action of the hips through impact acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Beyond the more specific position-by-position instruction found in the school, here are some channel videos specific to this topic: - th-cam.com/video/Us6jSgMvJmM/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/dB4ItR3guGU/w-d-xo.html - th-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/w-d-xo.html Remember - as the hips move laterally the head and upper torso remain in place, thereby preserving the in-to-out downswing path and keeping the swing center and low point intact. Thanks for your ongoing support. I wish you all the best for a Blessed, Healthy, Happy 2024 that has you enjoying the best golf of your life! Tom
It is great that you accentuate that golfers should not move sideways (you have taught this many times and is something I have found invaluable so thank you), BUT can you also revisit another problem some have which is the head moving up and down (I started doing THIS because of trying to DO ‘ shoulder down’) and my arc changed. I can stay centred but still I chunk because of it. 😢😢. I viewed your Jack Nicholson video too, which was good.
I'm glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you! I do understand that meshing the Tilt Component (shoulder down) with keeping your head in place can be a tricky concept to grasp, especially if you're trying to piece it together through these channel videos that jump randomly from topic to topic rather than learning it in the structured, sequential, position-by-position setting of my online school. If your head is moving down while you tilt, it is likely that your motion has a deficiency with regard to the Extension Component. If you tilt toward the target while keeping your head in place you will introduce the other components of turning and extending to put your body in the perfect backswing position with your shoulder oriented downward towards the ball. To get a feel for the coordinating of these elements we can reverse engineer it as follows: Without a club in your hands rest the top of your forehead against a wall to keep it in place. Without allowing your head to move execute the forward side tilting motion and watch what happens. Magically your lead shoulder has turned downward, and your spine has extended!! I’m a devoted SAGUTO follower and my golf has improved since using Tom’s teaching, however I don’t think I’ve ever taken a divot in front of the ball even with weight forward and no swaying and head still. There’s something about reaching the ground and being afraid to mess up the grass! so I lift up!!! Practising in the garden as a kid I was told, “don’t wreak my grass!” The sideways hip slide helps and ‘stay with your shot’ is good but that damn grass stays in perfect condition! 😅
LOL! It will grow back, Jane, and very quickly as well if you are taking proper divots -- "bacon strips, not pork chops" as Moe Norman once quipped...😆 Here's a suggestion: Find a weed in that pretty grass, put the ball immediately behind it, and have a go at it. You'll have no guilt or remorse if you use your club as a weed whacker, right? After a few reps of that, see if you can start scraping some grass with the same feel. Keep up the great work! Tom
Thank you!! Yes it works - not perfect but a “dig” in front of the ball where the weed was! I convinced myself to push down and through. Guiltless swing 😂 Interested to see if I can do it on the course. At least I’ll get to use the sand I cart around. By the way the various women and higher handicap men I play with don’t take divots either. There is a pattern there. No divots, poor result. Unless you can pick it so cleanly which is every now and then. Greatly appreciate your reply and I’ll keep working at it.
I sincerely appreciate your kind words, Eric, and I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! There has been quite a bit of dialogue in the Members' Forum of my online school on the topic of how to transport "Ranger Rick" to the golf course. All I can tell you is that it is part of the process, and as your practice performance becomes more and more consistent, then it's just a function of time in terms of when/how that will translate itself to the pressures and challenges of actual play. As confidence in your swing grows you should find more and more that you are playing "golf" instead of "golf swing" on the course, at which point your mechanical thoughts will be reduced to one or two at the most, and you will be nearly entirely focused on your target and not your swing. An excellent book that may help you with this is "Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game" by Dr. Gio Valiante. Another book that I like is "Play Your Best Golf Now" by Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson. @@SagutoGolf thanks so much for the info. I’ll definitely check out those books, just downloaded one on audio book. I did the mini course and loved it, now I just have to get that consistency out on the course. Thanks again for all your help!
so i think my problem is needing longer clubs. i dont know who has the right information. i see some setup videos and i setup and my club is hovering i have to do a slight squat. prolly the reason i hurt my back 2 weeks ago. shot my first 79 then hurt my back lol. im 6 foot 3 pretty long legs wrist to floor is 36 in half inches. been playing m4 irons standard think i need half inch or so but i dont know recommendations on fitting
With regard to your perceived equipment-related issues, I'm a big advocate of golfers getting their clubs professionally fitted. We're all unique in our physical attributes (arm length, leg length, torso length, hand size, etc.), so there is no reason that we should try to fit our respective swings to a stock grip size, shaft length, flex, swing weight, lie angle, etc. Let's have the equipment accommodate us and not vice versa! Here's a video from a couple of years ago documenting my session with a professional fitter: th-cam.com/video/xp2c-oYQRVI/w-d-xo.html Tom PS: Equipment aside, would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? Hi Tom, Great video. The part I don't understand is the tucking in of the right arm on the backswing. It does look like your arm is coming off your body a little bit.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, John! It is certainly acceptable to have a few inches of space between the trail elbow and the torso at the top, just like I have in my swing. The key is that the arm has not lost its "tucked" orientation and the elbow is definitely not flying away, meaning that it is in perfect position to reconnect in the downswing. "Gluing" it in there is a "feel" that is necessary for most amateurs to achieve this desired action. Would you like to learn some key aspects of the swing I teach in a more structured manner? If so, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Thanks, Tom
Thanks for the video. You hit 1 shot a little thin as shown in the video. What did you do to resolve this? I have this problem sometime and it kills my distance. Grz Ed
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Ed! Consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of thin shots. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. I hope that helps! Tom
Hi Tom, thanks for the reply. There are a lot of issues to consider. I will explore them one by one starting with the first 2 and will get back to you. Grz Ed
Tom, when you talk about the weight on the lead foot is it on the heel or the ball of the foot? Because the transferring weight system teaches to start the weight on the ball of the lead foot, then finishing over the lead heel. Since S&T demand 65, 70,80 % of the weight at the start , where that weight should stay?
Hi Tony, At address you should be balanced between heel and toe in both feet. This balance is achieved by first setting your knees over the toes (or at least over the toe end of your shoelaces) to activate the ground connection, and then pushing your butt out to incline the hips and chest so that a relationship with the ball is established. During the swing it is perfectly fine to experience pressure shifts in either foot as they respond to the dynamic motion, but not to the point where we are falling back onto our heel or leaning too far forward over our toes. By the way, unless you are working on a drill you are grossly overestimating the forward weight load at setup. We address the ball stacked shoulders over hips over knees with our weight balanced 50/50. We then simply bump our hips one inch towards the target while keeping everything else in place. This presets a _little_ more weight forward - 55% with the short and mid irons, roughly 60% with the longer clubs - while retaining the stacked relationship. Both feet are flared outward approximately 10-20 degrees, with the knees similarly angled outward. This orientation facilitates a stress-free, flowing motion back and through, resulting in a very body-friendly, consistent, powerful swing. Tom
Hey Tom, can you do a video on early extension of the body (not the hands releasing)? I follow your tips and they help but I still fight an early extension. Getting too tall at impact. Thanks!

I'm a senior golfer who has been committed to this stack and tilt method for about a year now. I still pound the dirt before the ball maybe 3 times per round. I think because I'm really trying to hit and compress the ball with my right hand. I can score 82 on my best days and 97 on my worst.

Hi James, It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: th-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/w-d-xo.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the woods/hybrids it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with these longer clubs as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, inhibiting any further necessary forward weight loading (we should be 80/20 forward halfway down, 90/10 at impact, and 95/5 in the finish), changing the low point and rerouting the club into a steeper angle of attack (AoA). This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. Of great importance is keeping your upper torso/head in place (in other words, not moving towards the target from a face-on view) while the hips execute the lateral slide action. This preserves the swing center and the desired shallow AoA. 2) They are not allowing the length of the club to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The shafts of these clubs - particularly the woods - is considerably longer than the irons and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" when it is teed. However, consider that in our stock setup with the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is behind that to varying degrees depending on the club. This presets some measure of forward shaft lean. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent at impact. Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag. Hey Tom, 30+ handicapper here. So with my trail arm on the downswing, at the moment of impact, is my trail elbow still connected to my side? And confirming both my arms SHOULDNT be fully extended at impact?
Hi Vinny, 1) As the club shaft reaches parallel to the ground during the downswing the trail arm will begin to straighten and as such the elbow will begin to release from its connected/tucked orientation. 2) The lead arm remains straight throughout the motion. The trail arm does not straighten until shortly after impact. By the way, have you enrolled in the online school yet? Happy New year Tom, I don’t know if my arms are shorter or what? I follow exactly what you are teaching but my shots wind up thin and I top the ball, what would your recommendation be for thin shots ?
Consider the following possibilities: 1) Ball position is too far forward, 2) Hands are too far back at address (they should be in line with the inside of your lead thigh), 3) The swing center and low point are drifting backwards at some point during the motion (face-on video will help you determine this), 4) The downswing is steep and/or the path is out-to-in, 5) Early extension of the trail arm during the downswing (also known as "casting"), 6) Flipping/scooping through the zone, 7) Loss of relationship with the ball (shoulder angle flattening, loss of tilt). Though not an exhaustive list, those are the primary causes of fats, thins, and tops. By the way, always begin with the setup - in this case the first two possibilities - prior to diving into a swing intervention. Really useful and hope you had a great break. My only observation is that from the top of the swing, there is some lateral hip movement from you before your hips actually turn, although admittedly it’s minimal. I find this is a contradiction dependant on who your pro is and what they believe in.
Thanks, Alistair - I'm glad you enjoyed it! The lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor to prevent a premature over-rotation and thereby enables the player to keep his upper torso square without having to fight their body. Most amateur golfers already have plenty of the rotational component; they need to build in the lateral hip slide to suppress the early-onset spinout that causes so many to get steep and across the line. Usually in the fairways of my home club......😎 We first need to be aware that camera angles in these videos can greatly skew the viewer's perspective on ball position. That aside, while this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. TS
Well, it really depends on whether such a player is prepared to make the transition to a body-friendly, powerful, reliable swing system that is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers... 😎 The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration. This system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. If you watch any Tour event on TV you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Hi Jim, I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone. Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently. The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. Tom
@@SagutoGolf Thanks Tom, I appreciate you responding. I have had some pain in my left wrist lately. I have been using the jumbo lite grips for a while now. I am not sure if I should stay with these grips or if it would be better or worse for my wrist to go smaller.
These swing keys also apply to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. I am aware that many folks out there believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot. This presets a very slight degree of forward shaft lean with the driver. Beyond that, the ball is behind the zero-point of the swing (which is even with the lead shoulder), meaning that without any contrived manipulations the club will still be on its descent - albeit very close to flat - at impact. So, perhaps with the exception of folks with slower swing speeds - or those Long Drive participants teeing it extra high and hitting maybe 1-2 balls out of 10 onto a 60-yard wide "fairway" - in general the path is still ever so slightly down. In fact, the PGA Tour average with the driver is actually minus (e.g.: downward) 1.5 degrees - nearly level - and it should feel level - but slightly down nonetheless. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Hi Joe, When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost. When prematurely rotated, all bets are off. For example, the lateral targetward action of the hips acts as a governor on the rotational component, thereby enabling the player to keep their upper torso square and their swing center intact without having to fight their body. It's also a move that you will notice with every great ball striker. (Cue up a face-on video of any Tour player, put your finger, mouse pointer, or some other reference tool on their lead hip at address, and then observe the extent to which the hips move laterally past your pointer in the downswing while - and this is key - the head and thus the swing center remains in place..) This will occur naturally if we allow it to, but unfortunately the misguided "fire the hips" notion has plagued so many amateurs with an early-onset spinout that makes them steep and across the line, or they get stuck, early extend, flip, etc. For them, the "feel" of the shoulders leading will help them to overcome this, correctly engage their hips, and fix their path, thereby leading them to a solid, "crispy" impact condition. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom
Okay easy. Back elbow in, lead arm straight, swivel don't sway, shoulder rotation, don't break wrists early, and keep everything on a circle. Easy to have a simple swing thought with all that going on.
Golf is indeed a very difficult sport. But if we can simplify the swing so as not to rely on timing and/or exceptional hand-eye coordination - and we can - then we will be able to achieve consistently great results without having to continuously work so hard. Much of what you mention is setup related, and as such if we nail that the all we need is a trigger to properly set the swing in motion. So, if we pre-establish the connections properly at address and have a foundational base that facilitates a full centered turn without restriction, then once we've ingrained the correct actions through sequential drilling and repetition we can entrust the motion to the big muscles and allow the arms, wrists, hands, and club to simply go along for the ride and respond accordingly as if on autopilot. @SagutoGolf thanks so much brother. Hopefully my post didn't come across as negative. Your videos are awesome. I just am struggling to find a consistent swing and swing thought that gets me out of the mid 80s. My distance needs to improve, and I can't figure it out. I've been playing from the blues, but the long par 4s are killing me.
LOL!! I really have no awareness of what's going on behind me while I'm filming, but invariably they seem to re-enact the exact amateur moves that I'm talking about in the episode (and I swear it's all unscripted)!!!....😂😂😂
Hi Aaron, In order to really compress the ball with our irons we need hit have that ball-first-divot contact that I refer to in my videos. If you are picking it clean and are satisfied with your ball flight and distance, then there's no need to change as there are plenty of good pickers out there. However, if you want to experience true compression that sends the ball rocketing towards the target with seemingly minimal effort, then you need to properly get your weight forward and firm up your impact condition. While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews Tom
LOL! It's always fun for me to review a video and see what's going on in the background, because I have no awareness of it while I'm shooting. It's as if they re-enact the exact amateur moves that I'm talking about, but I swear it's all unscripted!!!....😂😂😂 TS
Not really. It's likely the outwardly flared orientation of my feet that is skewing your perspective. Consider that for the driver the insides of my heels would be even with the outsides of my shoulders. The outward flaring of both feet in our setup facilitates the proper amount of body-friendly, free-flowing hip turn back and through. This is a major power move that also keeps the club traveling on the correct path. If you were to square your feet so that they were perpendicular to the target line, then your hips would be impeded from turning sufficiently in the backswing (which would then inhibit the shoulders from executing a full and effortless turn), and from releasing properly in the downswing to propel the club through the zone. Tom
Well, let me answer that with the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. *_It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion._* Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Thanks, Tom
It is essentially the same swing with every club, Jarrod; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver - which is quite common early in the transition process - it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. The shaft of the driver is considerably longer than the other clubs and thus requires more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as they take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as they maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around them, it should put them in the proper position at the top so they can attack the ball from the inside. (A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".) 3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. (Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws ) Here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” where you can learn some aspects of the system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/ This will provide a nice foundational understanding of the swing keys that will ultimately get you mashing the ball through your entire bag.
I would like to see a senior doing this swing just for comparison. I'm sure thousands of seniors would be very interested.
Great video Tom!
My thoughts exactly..he needs to show a shifter & lifter going through his course and what the results are.

Thanks 🙏
*FANTASTIC!!* I am very glad to know that my instruction is resonating with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play.

By the way, with regard to watching different videos from different sources, please be careful in navigating the muddied, overly-complicated, oft-conflicting realm of golf instruction.
Can’t wait!

Here are a few lessons on this topic:

I love seeming her on the golf course and I live watching her smile when she makes nice crisp contact.

superb. swing looks fantastic. left hand and arm control is certainly the key. and, swinging with just my left arm has helped me to stay more on my left side. when the heel pad of the left hand establishes control you can feel it pulling the left side of the head down, towards the top of the backswing, directing force into the left shoulder helping it to move down and around. really helps to get the ball rolling if you hold the club out to your left and then press the heel pad of your left hand in front of the clubhead. really enjoy doing that drill. always had a really weak left hand; but, i have develped much more control by swinging with just my left hand.
LOL!! You absolutely are not alone, Victor.
Keep it simple and keep up the great work!

Here's a link if you have not yet enrolled and would like to learn more about the school - saguto.golf
Thanks for your ongoing support. I wish you all the best for a Blessed, Healthy, Happy 2024 that has you enjoying the best golf of your life!

Excellent video Tom on how to never hit fat shots again! My take on all of this, is to stay centered over the ball and having a predictable contact point and rotation through the ball! I like your Elvis "swivel hips" interpretation toward the end of this video! Well Done Tom! Always enjoy your videos!!!

making it sound SO simple. Ole swivel hips. Great demonstration....so good I think even I could do this. All these comments about "is this ok for seniors" Your swing looks so compact it should work for all ages. Winter homework will be fun with these pointers
Indeed, Kevin, and I appreciate your recognizing that from your keen observations. This is a very body-friendly motion as validated by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.

Great Videos
can't wait to get back down the range after an ankle break .
do u think grass ranges are better than the carpets
Thanks Martin, and sorry to learn about your ankle.
Yes - grass is undeniably better, since it replicates what you be hitting off while on the course. If mats are your only option, then just know that they tend to do a great job of masking poorly struck shots. In this regard, here are a couple of different suggestions that can help you discern between crispy and soggy impact:
1) Get yourself an old hand towel and fold it in half.
@@SagutoGolf thank u Sir

Here are some lesson videos specific to this topic:

Beyond the more specific position-by-position instruction found in the school, here are some channel videos specific to this topic:
- th-cam.com/video/Us6jSgMvJmM/w-d-xo.html
- th-cam.com/video/dB4ItR3guGU/w-d-xo.html
- th-cam.com/video/I5XYgKopTb4/w-d-xo.html
Remember - as the hips move laterally the head and upper torso remain in place, thereby preserving the in-to-out downswing path and keeping the swing center and low point intact.
While there are certainly videos on my channel that address this topic, a better option for you would be my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ It's a great way to gain a fundamental understanding of this system as well as an introduction to the instruction style that has thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - enjoying the best golf of their lives: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews As for the online school, at just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet.

LOL! It will grow back, Jane, and very quickly as well if you are taking proper divots -- "bacon strips, not pork chops" as Moe Norman once quipped...😆
Here's a suggestion: Find a weed in that pretty grass, put the ball immediately behind it, and have a go at it.
Love your videos and the content you put out. Keep up the good work! What are your tips for moving skills from the range to the course?
Another book that I like is "Play Your Best Golf Now" by Lynn Marriott & Pia Nilsson.

so i think my problem is needing longer clubs. i dont know who has the right information. i see some setup videos and i setup and my club is hovering i have to do a slight squat. prolly the reason i hurt my back 2 weeks ago. shot my first 79 then hurt my back lol. im 6 foot 3 pretty long legs wrist to floor is 36 in half inches. been playing m4 irons standard think i need half inch or so but i dont know recommendations on fitting

Hi Tony,
At address you should be balanced between heel and toe in both feet.
Thanks!

Compare and contrast that with the sad reality - as you referenced - that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, firing the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well).

What is the main cause of topping balls on the tee with hybrids and fairway woods
Hi James,
It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the woods/hybrids it can be attributed to one of the following:
1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact.
(A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" when it is teed.

Hi Vinny,
1) As the club shaft reaches parallel to the ground during the downswing the trail arm will begin to straighten and as such the elbow will begin to release from its connected/tucked orientation.
2) The lead arm remains straight throughout the motion. The trail arm does not straighten until shortly after impact.

Can you please do a video for senior players
Hi Veronica,
My instruction applies to players of all ages! In fact, a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. _It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion._ Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built.

Tom
We’re do u play the ball at
Usually in the fairways of my home club......😎
We first need to be aware that camera angles in these videos can greatly skew the viewer's perspective on ball position.
TS
What about rear post players? I'm confused now can you please help?
Well, it really depends on whether such a player is prepared to make the transition to a body-friendly, powerful, reliable swing system that is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers... 😎
The need for a weight shift in the golf swing is one of the greatest fallacies ever taught, and it has led many an amateur golfer into the vast abyss of chronic inconsistency and frustration.
Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, "firing" the hips, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well).

Did you change your grips to thinner grips?
Hi Jim,
I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023.
Would like to see this for driver.
These swing keys also apply to the driver. In fact, it is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
(Here is an article on Ping’s website addressing this topic - ping.com/en-us/blogs/proving-grounds/optimal-launch-and-spin#:~:text=According%20to%20Trackman%2C%20PGA%20Tour,85%25%20ball%2Dflight%20laws )
For these reasons I do not advocate trying to hit up on the ball, and efforts to do so due to erroneous advice has caused many an amateur significant issues with their driver.

So I am assuming that the hips turn as a result and are not consciously made to turn?
-Joe 😀
Hi Joe,
When properly deployed in sequence our hips play a role in preserving our downswing path and they can certainly provide a power boost.

@SagutoGolf thanks so much brother. Hopefully my post didn't come across as negative. Your videos are awesome. Must be good club fitting…. ;)
What's it mean when my swing is picking the ball clean with no divot.
Hi Aaron,
In order to really compress the ball with our irons we need hit have that ball-first-divot contact that I refer to in my videos.

Two corollary rules of the chunk-proof swing:
First, do not lunge at the ball with your torso.
Second, do not let either leg collapse or bend.
You have quite a wide stance with your feet for iron play.
Tom
What if you cannot physically rotate your hips?

Is there a driver version of this?
I’m hitting my irons really consistently. My driver though 😭
It is essentially the same swing with every club, Jarrod; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.
Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver - which is quite common early in the transition process - it can be attributed to one of the following:
1) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel.
(A good feel for that lead shoulder is "down and in, under the chin".)
3) Many believe - and some even teach - that we must try to "hit up on the ball" with the driver. However, consider that in our stock setup with the driver the hands are even with the inside of the lead thigh (as they are with all clubs when playing a standard shot) and our ball position is even with the inside of the heel of the lead foot.
