I come back to this video about 3 months later and what do I find? An interview with the main developer responsible for this. And what does she say to the question "Are there going to be traditional RPG elements like the first two games?" "Play Mario & Luigi for that." Arlo, it's just as you feared. Guys, that's it. That's the nail in the coffin.
After finally playing Thousand Year Door, I completely agree with all the complaints about the new games, they completely lose the charm of the classics, no intersting areas, no fun partners, no engaging story, no fantastic rpg battle system. ALSO WE NEED BOBBERRY AND VIVIAN IN A NEW GAME IMMEDIATELY!!!

Darkstone Studios I’ve played every Peper Mario except TTYD. I wanted to like the newer ones but I couldn’t. (Actually I kind of liked Color Splash and Origami King, but Sticker Star I hated. I stopped playing the game when I saw in the Bowser fight you need a certain thing sticker to beat the Whomp.) The only games I enjoyed the most were 64 and Super Paper Mario. (My first game in the franchise.)
@@user-gk4jp6lt2b I've played every game but Super, my thoughts about the series are, Sticker Star was an absolute sad excuse for a Paper Mario game that's devoid of any enjoyment, Color Splash is a fun game that has a lot going for it although it still falls flat compared to the first two games, Origami King is a incredibly fun experience that rounds out a lot of the rough edges Color Splash had, making it almost as good as the first two, although the Battle system holds it back as I think it's actually a downgrade to Color Splash's. 64 is a whimsical adventure through the mushroom kingdom with fun characters and a absolutely addictingly fun battle system. TTYD is a near masterpiece, it takes everything that worked in 64 and refines and improves upon everything. Although the game does have a little too much backtracking than I would like, although I personally didn't mind it, I mean Metroid is my favorite game franchise so I'm very used to backtracking. If you're craving more Paper Mario like games, I would highly recommend Bug Fables
I played both PM64 and PM:TTYD and there's one thing that I want to see; a merge between the two worlds in one grand game. It'll never happen but I'd like to see some Star Spirit story elements (including Twink somewhere) while adding on to TTYD's grand scaled story (maybe an infinite/refined Glitz Pit type thing?) Just make a new PAPER MARIO. Not a new Sticker Debacle w/ added map. Just a PAPER MARIO! Sadly, as I said earlier, it won't happen...unless Nintendo stumbles upon some grand database with millions (and I mean millions literally) of current-gen Nintendo console owning individuals and their qualms with the series as a whole, each being carefully worded.
We all knew that dream died after Sticker Star degraded Paper Luigi to a voiceless, characterless cut-out cameo and set the most idiotic precedent for Paper Jam (which is especially infuriating since he was originally going to be playable) and now Color Splash too! Canon-wise, never gonna happen unless someone gets this shit together. However, like super goron said, let's have hope a fan game will inevitably be produced that treats both the character and the series with the dignity it once had. But if someone does do it, give Paper Luigi his SPM personality: the one where he's confident, heroic, taking initiative, helpful, competent, and badass? And include his Super Jump as one of his moves.
When will Nintendo learn that Paper Mario isn't about all the papery gimicks? Instead, Paper Mario is about the story, characters, and unique battle system. Like Arlo said, the first two games were fantastic. Super Paper Mario kept the epic story and characters, which is what made that enjoyable. Sticker Star was bullshit, and Color Splash was...... disappointing.
remember ttyd? That was the best one everstorywise. ven better than spm. it was all just one great big epic rpg quest. Chapter 1 was an epic quest culminating in an epic huge giant dragon showdown. standard fairytale. chapter 2 could be frusturating but still fun. chapter 3 was very fun with a very fun and mysterious atmosphere witht he secret wonders of the glitz pit that bandy andy talks about. and the others were all awesome in their own ways too.
Yeah... Sticker Star onward have pretty much turned the series into "LOL Paper Jokes!" They took the artstyle and pretty much made it the sole defining trait of the games. Like the game was originally called Mario Story in Japan, which while not explicitly *paper* was still styled and designed like a popup book. And outside of some paper gags here and there (in reference to the artstyle,) that was it. Then we have Sticker Star and Color Splash, where there's shit like the ground rolling up, or a giant fan that blows the enemies away. It comes off as forced, like they took the handful of paper gags in 64 and TTYD and assumed that the paper humor was what people loved about the games.
I remember myself in elementary school watching this video in 2016 and laughing at how this guy portrays himself online as some blue muppet like character. I’m in college now and Little did I know it would start a saga that would all lead up to one of the best announcement reactions I’ve ever seen
What seems hard about this is I don't think any fans really wanted the Paper Mario games to just completely drop both it's RPG elements and good story and characters for whatever we would classify Sticker Star as and what Color Splash might be.
+super goron Nintendo now views Paper Mario as an "action-adventure" game, which is entirely untrue in the eyes of fans. Paper Mario will never return to form. Nintendo has a way of being stubborn and is known for feeling as if the avid fans opinion is inferior to their own. Just look at the Pokemon series and how bad X and Y was.

@Daniel, yes, let's ignore the fact that Breath of the Wild is an actual GOOD game. It still has a story (just not a very strong one), but they wanted to focus on open world aspects the most. BoTW 2 already hints that it's going to have a better story, so I don't see the issue.... The Zelda series isn't Paper Mario.
@@justinstewart1057 Yeaah, honestly though BotW has a simple but effective story that meshes well with what the gameplay is like. It's not a sprawling character-filled RPG. It's more a solitary journey to get strong enough to defeat Ganon. It's what allows the player to explore as they do, whereas a more character-based RPG-ish style game like Paper Mario... oof
This video really hit the nail on the head of the problems I've had with Nintendo lately. With some exceptions (Splatoon, Link Between Worlds, 3D World), there's been too much focus on "casualizing" their games. They seem to be simplifying many of their outputs in their core franchises to appeal to the lowest common denominator, minimizing the effort needed for them and the risk taken with each new entry. Can I blame them? No, they're a company and these games can still be fun, but it's really been sacrificing the heart and core of some of their series in the process, and it's simply heartbreaking as fan to see.

+Arlo Very, very serious. This is the first time I've genuinely been concerned with the direction of Nintendo. I didn't like Sticker Star, I didn't like 3D World as much, I don't like how these games are becoming casulized. But I didn't let it bother me, I just figured it was aimed at different people, but now that there's Sticker Star 2, well that shows me that this might be more than just a little phase. I hope they come to their senses about this, at least not all of their franchises have succumb to this casulization problem (cough praise Aonuma for Zelda cough).

This was really touching, man. Must've played through TTYD at least 10 times completely, just still waiting on that true sequel. I know it can happen, even if you say you give up hope Arlo, you wouldn't have made this video if you did! There's at least a SHRED of hope, and I'll believe till the day the die. Good video, Arlo. My favorite thing about this video--- is after the recent interview snippets from Tanabe after Origami King, Arlo is still right--- They really don't have any idea how much fans loved the style of the first two games. I'm not saying any of the later games in the series don't have anything good to them, but to hear so much feedback on wanting the series to return to form and *not* respond to it with their games is baffling.
Thank you for acknowledging SPM's story and characters. As a big fan of the series, I know changing the turn-based combat was a big and disliked change, but I still rank SPM among the first two because it built off of them with its story, humor, scale, and stakes. You go from saving the Mushroom Kingdom, to saving Rogueport and the world, to saving the entire MULTIVERSE. Peach, Bowser and Luigi also get character upgrades as well, and even some nice character development: Peach takes accountability for her actions having a part in causing the main conflict, and actually fights alongside Mario on the adventure, then Luigi becomes incredibly confident and assertive, taking initiative in a Mario fashion and has an integral role in how the events will ultimately prevail. I can respect that you and others might not appreciate it to the same degree I do as you hold for the first two, but thank you for touching on SPM's good aspects :)
Can't agree with you more. Thank you for eloquently expressing your point without sounding like a demanding, whiny brat. We simply want what we KNOW Nintendo can deliver. We're not angry, we're just ... sad and disillusioned. I know Nintendo can get back to what they used to be. I just don't know if they believe in themselves anymore. It's really sad.
I'm more optimistic now than I have been in years. With Nintendo going back to classic game design for Mario and Zelda, I think this is the best shot for another real Paper Mario game. I mean, just look at all the new species in Mario Odyssey: There is CRAZY potential for new and fascinating characters. Even if they are shackled with the stupid "only use established Mario species" rule again, they have a much larger pool to work with. That being said, I'm still holding out hope for that TTYD remake Nintendo said they'd consider making if fans want it badly enough. I think the inevitable sales of such a remake would all but force Intelligent Systems to consider incorporating classic gameplay.
If you _ever_ get the opportunity to play The Thousand Year Door, pounce on it like a malnourished tiger. It's one of the best games of all time, and dang near perfect.

When I think of a new Paper Mario coming, I would imagine one as grand as one you would get for Zelda or Metroid." (Something that would close off a Nintendo Direct.) Nintendo 2023- *Releases an epic trailer for a remake of TTYD to close off a Direct* Nintendo actually listened! They did what was thought to never happen again!
I've seen people trying to attack people for expressing their opinion on Paper Mario Color Splash. It's like nobody knows that having an opinion is a thing anymore.
Actually, I am one of those people, and, well, is Nintendo TRYING to make a bad game? No? Ok, then they're not STINKING TERRORISTS. Will it make you sick? It's not spoiled milk. I think that I will love this masterpiece. I will get it. And I will laugh at those who say otherwise.

Also, the fact that Color Splash has the Sticker Star map system isn't only lame, it's just weird. I remember reading Iwata asks about Sticker Star where the devs said they decided to use segmented stages on SS because you might not be able to walk to a save point if you're stepping off a bus or something. The map system on a static home console makes no sense. It has no reason to be there. I can't really imagine any other reason but creative laziness. Making a big cohesive world is a lot of work, as Arlo stated in the video.
+OrangeVision what you have to remember, openworlds can be hard ot maneuver around. Especially considering Nintendo's audience, i think they were worried about people not knowing where to go, and rage quitting
While I appreciate nintendo for trying something new, this isn't the franchise to do it on. They could've made a totally new IP from this concept. But nope, let's slap the Paper Mario name on it.

+Thatoneadian My GOD *YES*, I'm no the only one who did! 64 and TTYD had great stories in their own rights, but at their cores, they're still glorified "rescue Peach" plots. SPM didn't have that; Peach JOINED you as a party member, she KICKED ASS, and she had more character development too (which a lot of people don't seem to acknowledge!). Not to mention had the highest scale and stakes in a Mario adventure that blow the other two out of the water (you can't top saving the entire multiverse from eradication!).
I feel so happy, That I'm not the only one who LOVES SPM, And all the different backstories included, King Croacus IV, You have no clue HOW BAD I FELT after realizing what I've done. After throwing his on buds at him.... (OMG I FINALLY GET WHY THEY HAVE FACES NOW XD) I didn't get that from the other paper mario's besides the feeling of, "Oh I made a mistake,, Let's go fix it!" Spoiler Alert: That count Blech was just driven by his emotions of pain through loosing a loved one. Who turned out to be with you the entire time. until the end of the game................ But we know Tiptron never felt the same. And people still haven't played SPM because it's not a "Traditional Paper Mario"
true, spm might not have the classic turn based combat, but personally, it didnt actually matter. At all. having an open fight gave certain story elements much more hectic, which fitted pretty well with most moments, And a strong story like that is what motivates me most to play something like this. Only once, sure, but the impression it left on me was - emotionally speaking - legendary. Nintendo will probably never release such an emotional story game again, so r.i.p forgotten gem :,(
That's not mario 128, sure that's the demo that was called mario 128. I'm wanting a true sequel to Mario 64. Large exploratory puzzle platforming through the mushroom kingdom without a focus on a gimmick like strange gravity or water. Multiplayer would be a plus. Don't get me wrong, I love Sunshine Mario, as It's own game but it gets away from the heart of the simple Mario game, I love Mario Galaxy even more, but it sacrifices the large exploratory gameplay for an experience that is more like a Mario Bros. platformer, which again is awesome in it's own right. I love all the games but they're not Mario 64 2, or what I dub Mario 128.

Also let me just say this. Yahtzee, a Guy who hates JRPGs as a genre, but despite that loved the first 2 games, hates the changes they've made. let me repeat, a guy who hates JRPGs doesn't like the fact they changed it away from JRPGs. That's how baffling these changes are.
Personally, I really like super paper Mario. I thought the locations, characters, and story were really interesting. Yes, the combat fell a little flat (no pun intended) but the puzzles with the 3D mechanic were genius to me
Can I just point out how absolutely stupid the card system is? Why do you need to collect your attacks!? You could just jump or use your hammer set to a specific kind of paint to do certain amounts of damage to certain enemies, and maybe unleash some extra powerful attacks, using a bit more paint! Why are the cards necessary!? AND WHO PAINTS CARDS!?!?!?
I wonder if the best way to get the message out would be to start a Miiverse campaign? If Earthbound and Sticker Star are any indication, Miiverse and (the now-defunct) Club Nintendo seem to be the only fan feedback that Nintendo actually pays attention to.
7:09 I have to hugely disagree with you, Paper Jam was the entry that severely simplified the story. Dream Team's story is on the same level as Superstar Saga's, if not, more developed than it. I know this is an old video but still, that point always bugged me
The first two Paper Mario games were absolutely amazing. Story, Characters, RPG Mechanics, the badges, the moves, the worlds, funny paper implementations! They were absolutely sublime! Then we had gotten Super Paper Mario... which, by my standards, was great. There was Story, Characters, Worlds, 2d to 3d was a great visual mechanic, and while there weren't proper partners, I enjoyed playing as the 4 Main Mario Characters, each doing cool and unique things! I mean, Paper peach is hands-down one of her best iterations, and we got to PLAY as her?! Yes! But there were things gone... it wasn't as RPG anymore. Sure, you could level-up, but it lacked substance. It just kinda happened. Why did we even need a Score Counter? It did nothing! While it was a great game, it wasn't a true Paper Mario sequel fans were waiting for. Then... we got the ABOMINATION that is Sticker Star... MY GOD. I hated the game. Bowser had no humor, he just about never spoke. There were barely ingenious characters, but Toads by the freaking mile! Kersti was essentially another Navi, and Wiggler was the only character with Plot, which I enjoyed until getting his body parts became a chore. The Combat was extremely tedious. I avoided it if i could to save stickers. But I liked the stickers... they affected the areas you were in, there was a good variety. But all the things I listed right here, and that Arlo listed, were essentially gone from Sticker Star. I felt bad for Paper Luigi, man. he had NO representation, minus a few random Easter Eggs! WHY?! There was even the "Page-Editing" mechanic, which was a clever idea, but could have been done much better. and after being reduced to a Side Character in Paper Jam... well. We miss Paper Mario, or rather, what he used to be. Please. Bring him back. #MakePaperMarioGreatAgain

+piece of smith gaming The way I see it, Nintendo has one more chance to redeem the Metroid series. They made other M, they are making Federation Force, but there is no strike 3 yet. This Color Splash game is the 3rd strike for Paper Mario after Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star.
Sticker Star by itself is pretty decent game by itself( in my opinion ). When compared to the first 2 paper mario games however, is a completely different story. When i got sticker star, i never had played the other paper marios. But recently, i bought paper mario for virtual console on the wii u (yes i have that thing shut up) and i could understand what people meant. It was an enjoyable experience for me, significantly more than sticker star mind you, and overall had fun. But i am still sticking to the whole " the game is ok by itself " ok? Again, this is my own personal opinion and not yours so attack me if you wanna, still not changing that opinion
Hey Arlo, you were right! In an interview with one of the designers of Color Splash, she stated that if you wanted rpg elements in a Mario game, go to Mario and Luigi.
Hahahaha at least the minimal story in BotW worked and the game became Game of the Year in 2017. :P I don't think they're getting the same results with Paper Mario lately haha
Paper Mario is a series near and dear to my heart. I was excited to get sticker star so I could play on the go, but when I finally played it.... I was bored. You've got mario and a bunch of toads. Go find one use stickers to fight repetitive battles. And that summarizes the game. I couldn't even finish it.
Sometimes you hold hope in your heart to help you get from day to day, you have to hold on to that hope. But, after a while you reach a point where that hope can only hurt you and all you can do is let go and move on. It's better to simply accept that there is no hope so that you can start to heal. This is the most beautiful quote I have ever heard in a gaming related video.
I found out about this channel arc in reverse order. Only AFTER seeing Arlo’s reaction video did I find out about his…disdain for the newer Paper Mario games. But regardless, I’m extremely happy for both him, and all of us. Whether or not videos like this helped to shape the TTYD remake, the important part is that…it’s real. It’s coming. We will all have one of the best games Nintendo has ever produced on one of their most successful systems ever. And that’s just really cool 😎

+Chase I haven't played TTYD in about 6 or 7 years. I was about 6 or 7, and was on the island, had no coins, used all the Wackabumps, and had saved before getting the coconut for Flavio. I got rid of the game. Ever since, I have wanted to go back in time and beat Mini Calebite to a stupid little pulp.
This is a great day. The day that in my hand.... I hold a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.... And am playing a game.... And that game...... Is The Thousand Year Door.

@@user-gk4jp6lt2b I've played every game but Super, my thoughts about the series are, Sticker Star was an absolute sad excuse for a Paper Mario game that's devoid of any enjoyment, Color Splash is a fun game that has a lot going for it although it still falls flat compared to the first two games, Origami King is a incredibly fun experience that rounds out a lot of the rough edges Color Splash had, making it almost as good as the first two, although the Battle system holds it back as I think it's actually a downgrade to Color Splash's. 64 is a whimsical adventure through the mushroom kingdom with fun characters and a absolutely addictingly fun battle system. TTYD is a near masterpiece, it takes everything that worked in 64 and refines and improves upon everything. Although the game does have a little too much backtracking than I would like, although I personally didn't mind it, I mean Metroid is my favorite game franchise so I'm very used to backtracking. If you're craving more Paper Mario like games, I would highly recommend Bug Fables

I played both PM64 and PM:TTYD and there's one thing that I want to see; a merge between the two worlds in one grand game. It'll never happen but I'd like to see some Star Spirit story elements (including Twink somewhere) while adding on to TTYD's grand scaled story (maybe an infinite/refined Glitz Pit type thing?) Just make a new PAPER MARIO. Not a new Sticker Debacle w/ added map. Just a PAPER MARIO! Sadly, as I said earlier, it won't happen...unless Nintendo stumbles upon some grand database with millions (and I mean millions literally) of current-gen Nintendo console owning individuals and their qualms with the series as a whole, each being carefully worded.
We all knew that dream died after Sticker Star degraded Paper Luigi to a voiceless, characterless cut-out cameo and set the most idiotic precedent for Paper Jam (which is especially infuriating since he was originally going to be playable) and now Color Splash too! Canon-wise, never gonna happen unless someone gets this shit together. However, like super goron said, let's have hope a fan game will inevitably be produced that treats both the character and the series with the dignity it once had.
But if someone does do it, give Paper Luigi his SPM personality: the one where he's confident, heroic, taking initiative, helpful, competent, and badass? And include his Super Jump as one of his moves.

When will Nintendo learn that Paper Mario isn't about all the papery gimicks? Instead, Paper Mario is about the story, characters, and unique battle system. Like Arlo said, the first two games were fantastic. Super Paper Mario kept the epic story and characters, which is what made that enjoyable. Sticker Star was bullshit, and Color Splash was...... disappointing.

Chapter 1 was an epic quest culminating in an epic huge giant dragon showdown. standard fairytale.
chapter 2 could be frusturating but still fun.
chapter 3 was very fun with a very fun and mysterious atmosphere witht he secret wonders of the glitz pit that bandy andy talks about.
and the others were all awesome in their own ways too.

Yeah... Sticker Star onward have pretty much turned the series into "LOL Paper Jokes!" They took the artstyle and pretty much made it the sole defining trait of the games.
Like the game was originally called Mario Story in Japan, which while not explicitly *paper* was still styled and designed like a popup book. And outside of some paper gags here and there (in reference to the artstyle,) that was it.
Then we have Sticker Star and Color Splash, where there's shit like the ground rolling up, or a giant fan that blows the enemies away. It comes off as forced, like they took the handful of paper gags in 64 and TTYD and assumed that the paper humor was what people loved about the games.

What seems hard about this is I don't think any fans really wanted the Paper Mario games to just completely drop both it's RPG elements and good story and characters for whatever we would classify Sticker Star as and what Color Splash might be.

@Daniel, yes, let's ignore the fact that Breath of the Wild is an actual GOOD game. It still has a story (just not a very strong one), but they wanted to focus on open world aspects the most. BoTW 2 already hints that it's going to have a better story, so I don't see the issue.... The Zelda series isn't Paper Mario.

This video really hit the nail on the head of the problems I've had with Nintendo lately. With some exceptions (Splatoon, Link Between Worlds, 3D World), there's been too much focus on "casualizing" their games. They seem to be simplifying many of their outputs in their core franchises to appeal to the lowest common denominator, minimizing the effort needed for them and the risk taken with each new entry. Can I blame them? No, they're a company and these games can still be fun, but it's really been sacrificing the heart and core of some of their series in the process, and it's simply heartbreaking as fan to see.

My favorite thing about this video--- is after the recent interview snippets from Tanabe after Origami King, Arlo is still right--- They really don't have any idea how much fans loved the style of the first two games. I'm not saying any of the later games in the series don't have anything good to them, but to hear so much feedback on wanting the series to return to form and *not* respond to it with their games is baffling.
Thank you for acknowledging SPM's story and characters. As a big fan of the series, I know changing the turn-based combat was a big and disliked change, but I still rank SPM among the first two because it built off of them with its story, humor, scale, and stakes. You go from saving the Mushroom Kingdom, to saving Rogueport and the world, to saving the entire MULTIVERSE. Peach, Bowser and Luigi also get character upgrades as well, and even some nice character development: Peach takes accountability for her actions having a part in causing the main conflict, and actually fights alongside Mario on the adventure, then Luigi becomes incredibly confident and assertive, taking initiative in a Mario fashion and has an integral role in how the events will ultimately prevail. I can respect that you and others might not appreciate it to the same degree I do as you hold for the first two, but thank you for touching on SPM's good aspects :)

I see this video near the end of 2017 and still... it *always* saddens my heart to see another year go by without a *proper* Paper Mario game again.
I'm still hanging down my head in shame.............. Like I said, the current Paper Mario game "Magic" is Long gone....
I'm more optimistic now than I have been in years. With Nintendo going back to classic game design for Mario and Zelda, I think this is the best shot for another real Paper Mario game. I mean, just look at all the new species in Mario Odyssey: There is CRAZY potential for new and fascinating characters. Even if they are shackled with the stupid "only use established Mario species" rule again, they have a much larger pool to work with.
That being said, I'm still holding out hope for that TTYD remake Nintendo said they'd consider making if fans want it badly enough. I think the inevitable sales of such a remake would all but force Intelligent Systems to consider incorporating classic gameplay.

Also, the fact that Color Splash has the Sticker Star map system isn't only lame, it's just weird. I remember reading Iwata asks about Sticker Star where the devs said they decided to use segmented stages on SS because you might not be able to walk to a save point if you're stepping off a bus or something.
The map system on a static home console makes no sense. It has no reason to be there. I can't really imagine any other reason but creative laziness. Making a big cohesive world is a lot of work, as Arlo stated in the video.

+Thatoneadian My GOD *YES*, I'm no the only one who did! 64 and TTYD had great stories in their own rights, but at their cores, they're still glorified "rescue Peach" plots. SPM didn't have that; Peach JOINED you as a party member, she KICKED ASS, and she had more character development too (which a lot of people don't seem to acknowledge!). Not to mention had the highest scale and stakes in a Mario adventure that blow the other two out of the water (you can't top saving the entire multiverse from eradication!).

That's not mario 128, sure that's the demo that was called mario 128. I'm wanting a true sequel to Mario 64. Large exploratory puzzle platforming through the mushroom kingdom without a focus on a gimmick like strange gravity or water. Multiplayer would be a plus.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sunshine Mario, as It's own game but it gets away from the heart of the simple Mario game, I love Mario Galaxy even more, but it sacrifices the large exploratory gameplay for an experience that is more like a Mario Bros. platformer, which again is awesome in it's own right. I love all the games but they're not Mario 64 2, or what I dub Mario 128.

Personally, I really like super paper Mario. I thought the locations, characters, and story were really interesting. Yes, the combat fell a little flat (no pun intended) but the puzzles with the 3D mechanic were genius to me

Can I just point out how absolutely stupid the card system is? Why do you need to collect your attacks!? You could just jump or use your hammer set to a specific kind of paint to do certain amounts of damage to certain enemies, and maybe unleash some extra powerful attacks, using a bit more paint! Why are the cards necessary!? AND WHO PAINTS CARDS!?!?!?

The first two Paper Mario games were absolutely amazing. Story, Characters, RPG Mechanics, the badges, the moves, the worlds, funny paper implementations! They were absolutely sublime! Then we had gotten Super Paper Mario... which, by my standards, was great. There was Story, Characters, Worlds, 2d to 3d was a great visual mechanic, and while there weren't proper partners, I enjoyed playing as the 4 Main Mario Characters, each doing cool and unique things! I mean, Paper peach is hands-down one of her best iterations, and we got to PLAY as her?! Yes! But there were things gone... it wasn't as RPG anymore. Sure, you could level-up, but it lacked substance. It just kinda happened. Why did we even need a Score Counter? It did nothing! While it was a great game, it wasn't a true Paper Mario sequel fans were waiting for. Then... we got the ABOMINATION that is Sticker Star... MY GOD. I hated the game. Bowser had no humor, he just about never spoke. There were barely ingenious characters, but Toads by the freaking mile! Kersti was essentially another Navi, and Wiggler was the only character with Plot, which I enjoyed until getting his body parts became a chore. The Combat was extremely tedious. I avoided it if i could to save stickers. But I liked the stickers... they affected the areas you were in, there was a good variety. But all the things I listed right here, and that Arlo listed, were essentially gone from Sticker Star. I felt bad for Paper Luigi, man. he had NO representation, minus a few random Easter Eggs! WHY?! There was even the "Page-Editing" mechanic, which was a clever idea, but could have been done much better. and after being reduced to a Side Character in Paper Jam... well. We miss Paper Mario, or rather, what he used to be. Please. Bring him back. #MakePaperMarioGreatAgain

I LOVED that game, along with Paper Jam. Antasma is one of if not my favourite Mario & Luigi villain at all, along with Fawful, and probably Popple.

I like all Mario & Luigi games, even Paper Jam. But I only like the first 3 Paper Mario games. I still dislike Sticker Star and Color Splash.

+piece of smith gaming The way I see it, Nintendo has one more chance to redeem the Metroid series. They made other M, they are making Federation Force, but there is no strike 3 yet. This Color Splash game is the 3rd strike for Paper Mario after Super Paper Mario and Sticker Star.

Sticker Star by itself is pretty decent game by itself( in my opinion ). When compared to the first 2 paper mario games however, is a completely different story. When i got sticker star, i never had played the other paper marios. But recently, i bought paper mario for virtual console on the wii u (yes i have that thing shut up) and i could understand what people meant. It was an enjoyable experience for me, significantly more than sticker star mind you, and overall had fun. But i am still sticking to the whole " the game is ok by itself " ok? Again, this is my own personal opinion and not yours so attack me if you wanna, still not changing that opinion

Hey Arlo, you were right! In an interview with one of the designers of Color Splash, she stated that if you wanted rpg elements in a Mario game, go to Mario and Luigi.
I've been with Arlo from here all the way up till recently where we got the good ending. Its been a great ride.

Eh, Breath of the Wild still had a story. It just wasn't presented in a great way.
Hahahaha at least the minimal story in BotW worked and the game became Game of the Year in 2017. :P I don't think they're getting the same results with Paper Mario lately haha

Paper Mario is a series near and dear to my heart. I was excited to get sticker star so I could play on the go, but when I finally played it.... I was bored. You've got mario and a bunch of toads. Go find one use stickers to fight repetitive battles. And that summarizes the game. I couldn't even finish it.
Sometimes you hold hope in your heart to help you get from day to day, you have to hold on to that hope. But, after a while you reach a point where that hope can only hurt you and all you can do is let go and move on. It's better to simply accept that there is no hope so that you can start to heal.

I found out about this channel arc in reverse order. Only AFTER seeing Arlo’s reaction video did I find out about his…disdain for the newer Paper Mario games. But regardless, I’m extremely happy for both him, and all of us. Whether or not videos like this helped to shape the TTYD remake, the important part is that…it’s real. It’s coming. We will all have one of the best games Nintendo has ever produced on one of their most successful systems ever.

+Chase I haven't played TTYD in about 6 or 7 years. I was about 6 or 7, and was on the island, had no coins, used all the Wackabumps, and had saved before getting the coconut for Flavio. I got rid of the game. Ever since, I have wanted to go back in time and beat Mini Calebite to a stupid little pulp.
