- I like Super Mario Sunshine, and here's why!
(NOTE: I only just realized as I was editing this video that Nintendo Life published an article called "In Defence of Super Mario Sunshine" a few years back. They spelled "defense" the British way with a "C" however, so let's just pretend that these are two completely different names and that I absolutely didn't rip them off!)

Is anyone else amazed at how great sunshine looks for its time?
Oh yeah. For an Gamecube game, it's looks gorgeous. It may not be the best looking GameCube game or the best looking Mario game out of them all. But it still looks damn good.
It looks ok. Metroid Prime tho. 👌

Some guy made an entire remake of all the textures in HD, so you can play it today in Dolphin and it looks amazing

Same here. I'll be honest, I don't like it enough to actually want to do a 100% playthrough ever again, but I still have fond memories of it and I never heard anybody trying to make me feel bad for that.

And...no. You have to ignore about 90% of the game to claim this. Going straight to each boss fight is certainly an option, but there are lots of side areas and mini-games and opportunities to just screw around that you can do instead. It has all the variety, exploration, and story-driven motivation Arlo talks about in the video. Odyssey is *NOT* just another iteration of New Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario 3D World; it's exactly the kind of Super Mario Sunshine style game Arlo was craving.

Super Mario Sunshine is without a doubt my favorite 3D mario game, I will never understand why ppl absolutely hate this great game.
Same here. Not only is it fun, but I love the tropical setting. It's way better than the boring generic eight worlds that Miyamoto wants every Mario game to have these days.

Err, I don't really agree with that. Compared to the "grassland, desert, beach, snowland, lava-land" template that's in way too many Mario games, Sunshine feels like there was more thought put into the world design.

i think people don't necessarily hate the game, just think that it isn't as good as the others due to controls, limited levels, and repetitive/tedious missions

Alvy Singer Odyssey's controls complete crush the controls of everyother Mario game. Anyways, Sunshine is my third favorite (now that Odyssey is out), and I while I understand the hate for the game, I still love it to death!

Rather than go through everything. The biggest difference. Mario 64 has EXCELLENT controls. Sunshine didn't, they are slippery, FLUDD was sluggish to use.
Biggest cap is saying Mario64 controls are better than... any mario game really. That games controls were revolutionary for the time but they clearly aged if you take your nostalgia glasses off.
@@brandontalbort thats literally the worst statement u could have made, its exactly the other way around. i replayed sm64 a couple of weeks ago and the controls, especially the camera really hasnt aged well. If you are actually good at sunshine the controls and movement that game has to offer is amazing. i would even go as far and say that it has the best movement out all the 3D mario games.

I remember playing it and being scared to play it because of that level where you clean the eel's teeth. It was still my favorite GC mario game, but at the time, going deep down in the dark water trying to find a rather large creature was terrifying for a 6 year old boy. Eventually got to finish it years later.
I dicked around in the city AND levels, since they were so open and huge. But yeah, fun times.

I’m playing it on an emulator right now and I’m torn if I should just bind it so it’s not inverted since I have the option. But I kinda like that classic rage induced feel that I had years ago
This game is underrated af. Its one of my all time favorite childhood games. Definitely deserves more popularity
My most memorable gaming period was after I got Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine for christmas. I absolutely adore the Gamecube

I completely agree Arlo, I'm one of those few who grew up with Super Mario World on the SNES but still have Sunshine has their favorite Mario game.
You really said exactly what I love about this game but you also omitted a strong point (for me).
The tropical theme!
It's so...shiny, so exotic, so different from the usual Mario areas, I just love it, it really has a great atmosphere and when it's rainy or there's a tempest outside, I just have this strong envy to bootup the gamecube and come back in Delfino.
You're right; one very strong plus is that it chooses a theme and goes for it HARD. It's so bright and tropical and fun, and it's nice to have an entire game like that rather than one world or something.
I grew up playing Mario 64 and I think it's the shittiest 3D Mario game of them all. Sunshine improves on it in every way and Galaxy is one of my 20 favorite games of all time. People need to recognize their nostalgic biases. a lot of sunshine detractors are 64 fanboys who can't see past their weak superficial criticisms.
I prefer 64 and still love Sunshine although I couldn't care less for the Galaxy games even if I tried.

I've actually considered it. They're awesome for the Chao alone!
Those games are part of my childhood and I've adored them for so long, 2 Battle especially. To hear them torn apart for reasons I can't even agree with (ever since ProJared seemed to make it cool to hate on them) just bugs me to no end.
But they hate them for good reason. They're just not good games, plain and simple, it's okay to like them but just know that that opinion comes from nostalgia and nostalgia alone.

I disagree. The Mario 2 of Mario 3D games is Super Mario 3D World. Sunshine is the Super Mario World of the 3D games.

Actually, it IS THE 2nd 3D Mario!
One of the things I hate the most is how the game never tells you what the shines are doing, outside of a purely narrative standpoint. I know that shadow mario and new levels are all tied behind shines, but at no point did the game actually tell me that, or how many shines I needed to obtain before I could unlock the next thing. There was never even a reason I couldn't follow shadow mario into corona mountain, just some flimsy wooden gate that mysteriously disappears when you've beaten all of the shadow mario missions. This is especially annoying when the game actually asks you to BUY shines with blue coins.
The Blue coins don't even help you progress through the story at all. The same thing can be said about the Yellow Birds.
Just complete all the Shadow Mario episodes and you can play the final level taking down Bowser.

Totally agree with you. Loved Sunshine for its exploration and variety. The game feels like a giant playground with great platforming mixed in - almost like a true sequal to Mario 64 in many ways. It could have been called "Mario 128". Never understood why so many people didn't like it.

I have, but to be brutally honest, their arguments just seem pretty lame.
There is a lot of hate for Mario Sunshine, even Nintendo have tried to forget about its existence.
I have been hoping for a HD remake for a long time, or even a virtual console release would be great, but as of yet the Switch doesn’t have GameCube games, not even N64 games to date. It’s a shame as it’s 17 years old now and Nintendo is missing out from a whole new market who haven’t had the chance to play it.
@@chris7921 What are you talking about? The stage in Brawl, Mario's Down B to this day is FLUDD, Sunshine Airport and the Sunshine Outfit in Odyssey. And a lot more references and cameos I don't remember right now.

I love Sunshine just as much as anyone, but nothing can top the first Mario Galaxy as the best 3D Mario game in my book. It's simple, challenging, interesting, and returns to Mario 64's classic feel of not knowing what unique and wonderful world you'll visit next. Something about this game is so special to me, and like Sunshine, it IS a world I like to revisit at least once a year because it feels like an actual adventure to me. To me, it really is that good.

I have very mixed feelings on sunshine. On the one hand, it has tons of charm and originality. Mario controlls well, and the shines provide variety, though many are re-done shadow mario chases, red coin collections, etc. However, many or even most of the shines are glitchy, annoying, and feel unfair. Lots of people love the fluddless sections, but I thought they were really annoying, especially when it was hard to get to them and you had to keep getting to them as you game-over. (Secret of casino delfino, anyone?) Despite my all too frequent frustration as I play, the uniqeness and fun movement system of sunshine makes it a game that I love. Most of the time?
I completely agree. Playing Odyssey and then going back to Sunshine on Switch was not a positive experience for me. While it does have it's merits and many of the mechanics were revolutionary for the time, I don't think time has been too kind to it, especially with the way Mario controls.

It sounds to me like Super Mario Sunshine is a game I should buy. I've been craving a Mario game with a story for a long time, it was 1 of the main reasons I adored Super Mario Galaxy.
Yeah I know Bowser did kidnap Peach in that game but the whole plot with the Grand Stars, Rosalina, and the Lumas really did make the game for me.
I was planning to buy this game at some point so thanks Arlo for giving me more reasons to play it!
It doesn't have too much more than what you can glean from this video, but all the dudes you can talk to around the island make it feel like it does. In fact I wish I'd mentioned the NPC's, because they add to the feeling that Isle Delfino is a living, breathing place. I absolutely recommend giving the game a try!

If you want a Mario game with a full story, you could try Super Paper Mario. Unless you were just talking about the main series platformers and not just the whole franchise
But either way, definitely give Sunshine a go, you won't regret it.

Da Nintendude Well you see, that's what I cannot understand, I tried playing my Gamecube games on my Wii but when I choose the Gamecube game on the Wii Home Screen, my TV goes to it's standard blue screen and I cannot see anything. However if I try it with a Wii game it works perfect.
My TV is literally refusing to display Gamecube games, and I cannot understand why.

@@Bmanritchie, Luigi's Mansion and Sunshine were the first two Mario (universe) games I ever actually owned, rather than just played somewhere. The Gamecube was also the first console I ever purchased as a barely-adult 😁 I'm gonna go one step further and say that Starfox Adventures was also a pretty great Zelda clone (though I can totally understand why people think it sucked as a Starfox game).

The next one we need now is "In Defense of Super Mario 3D World". I see that game get so much hate nowadays, but the level design and co-op is some on Nintendo's best. Both Sunshine and 3D World got almost the same score on release (~93 on Metacritic), and fan reception for both over the years turned sour.

People who want linear stage-based platformers will not care as much for the 3D collectathons and vice versa.
I blame Nintendo. They should have both running simultaneousy or intercalated. Not ignoring one, then ignoring the other.

mario sunshine has fun glitches even if there game breaking the rocket glitch that makes u go super high allows u to see the island of delphino and admire the fact they allowed u to see it from such a high distance

64 has even more glitches being the first experiment and all but its never criticized as much as Sunshine for some reason.
@@user-me9il2wg8h How is it a glitch to see things from a long distance? Looks more like a nice feature to me. Even if it's not intentional, having that possibility is never a bad thing in games that can do it (becaue yes many games would lag if they allowed it).

You should do this for Pac-Man World 1 & 2. They're not hated, just VERY underrated and overshadowed by other games that, in my opinion, shouldn't get as much recognition.

world 2 is piss easy with the fire and ghost worlds being difficulty spikes as well as Clyde being the hardest boss in the game

PAC-MAN World 3 sadly killed what was a decent series.
BlackStarBall i dunno about that. World 3 had a combat system but aside from that it wasn't different gameplay wise. The looks and feel of the game on the other hand are what's boring, the settings just feel dull and lifeless, and i get that's supposed to be like a ghost dimmension or something, but they could've made it a lil bit more interesting.
Also, this is a very subjective opinion, but i don't mind the voice acting in it, yes, even Pac-Man's voice is ok to me. It's the kinda voice i would expect.
I had no idea that SMS was getting flack in recent years, I've only ever heard praise for it.

Sunshine has probably the most memorable levels in the entire series. That pachinko machine and epic roller coaster battle will be burnt into my head for the rest of my life.
I hope hope hope the resurrect Sunshine for the Switch. I would SO buy it. (And yes, I have Odessy and love it, but I agree with ya Arlo, Sunshine is my few-times-a-year-replay-JAM)
Sarah Monster I would love to play Sunshine again. However, I’ve heard several people say that Sunshine made use of the analog triggers, which Switch doesn’t have. Can’t remember how they were used. For controlling the amount of water sprayed?

and you're basically wrong going by the fact that it's like playing metroid prime with generic and uninteresting characters (contrast to the visually and mechanically interesting interesting cast of prime hunters) with cinderblocks tied to your feet but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.

What I love most about Mario Sunshine is the satisfaction in knowing I'm helping the Islanders have a better life. Sure, it's fun trying to stop Bowser and save peach and all of that, but I love how each level area has its own mini-plot across its levels that eventually end in you seeing how the islander's lives have been saved and improved thanks to you. It's the extra level of satisfaction you don't feel with the latest mario games, and I miss it.
And they repay you by fucking hating you for a mess you apparently caused 5 minutes after your arrival :^)
I agree with "SOMECALLMEJOHNNY" when he quotes "What we get pre-Bower battle is much better then post-Bower!" I hated those blue coin scavenger hunts! I couldn't find the last remaining ones for a 100% completion and I didn't have a guide!! The rest of the game is fine, tho!!
Thank you for articulating so many of the reasons I fell in love with this entry of the Mario series as opposed to the others. To be honest, I hadn't ever been able to put my finger on _why_ I cared about Sunshine so much, but this summed up a majority of my adoration! Glad to see I'm not the only one itching to return to Isle Delfino whenever summer rolls around again or winter makes its home here a little too long :)
It's always interesting looking back on videos like this a few years after the fact. Arlo's lamenting the death of adventure and exploration Mario, and just last year we got not only a new Mario with that focus, but one of the greatest Mario games ever made!
So happy Mario is going back to this style of game again.

The early 2000s basically, now games either copy the formulas from back then or just keep a constant flow of dumb downed platforming that is basically the same game but with better graphics.s

originality? they ripped off GTA and just used water effects because the Gamecube would render them well. They got Mario, added GTA without the crime, added water in the form of an island and a watergun, and that's it.
I agree early 2000's games had more originality than games do now, but Mario Sunshine didn't really do anything new. Platformers have had jetpacks before, etc.

- 100 coin shine is harder to get, and coin placement changes between missions so you must pick the right one.
- Delfino Plaza, Bianco Hills, Gelato Beach and Ricco Harbor all have the same music, only remixed.
- Losing the Hover Nozzle cripples Mario. Why not just let you have squirt and hover always, and add a third if found?
- You fight Goo Piranha Plant a lot in the beginning, and i mean a lot. At the plane, at the first 3 stages and in the first mission.
- Same problem with the giant Blooper, which you fight twice in Ricco Harbor and once in Noki Bay.
- A lot of climbing the same hill for every mission, like in Noki Bay.
- Pianta Village flaming goo without fludd mission.
- The entire hotel. All of it.
- I'm a chuckster.
- The death music. Feels like it makes fun of me..
- Lives. No game needs lives.
- Collecting all blue coins. Some are too well hidden and only appear in certain missions. Required for 100% shines.
- Touching an enemy can send you flying to your doom. Most notably the wind.
- With only a few exceptions, you are now forced to do the missions in order.
- Chasing Shadow Mario. 7th mission of every stage, plus Delfino Plaza for Peach, two nozzles and the Yoshi egg.
The good:
- Mario controls well. For example, i like to flip jump onto a wall, wall jump off it, then hover and turn around in midair.
- Nice graphics.
- The music is usually good, just wondering why they recycled the same theme for the first levels.
- Some of the "secret" stages are fun and challenging.
- Isle Delfino feels alive and lived in.
- Varied worlds without using all the classic themes, like lava world, ice world, jungle world etc.
- FLUDD, especially the Hover Nozzle. Repairs mistakes and creates shortcuts. Less need to be careful which encourages daredevil jumps, which is a lot of fun.
- The Piantas are interesting, i like their design and the sounds they make when speaking.
The neutral:
- The fludd-less "secret" levels feel weird. Why invent a new way of playing, then strip it away? Some are good, some are bad. All in all i don't love or hate them.
The vertict:
Sunshine is much less annoying if you don't aim for 100% completion. Then you don't have to search for every blue coin, you can skip the Pachinko machine and poison leaf ride, and just grab what you can find.
Why are all of your "the bad" points, things that I like about the game? Heres a real "the bad" list... No green yoshi
Pachinko isn't hard, everybody goes against how it works and uses fludd when your meant to move with out fludd on the level. Making music is really annoying and not many people like doing it. blue coins add a challenge yes its useless to get them but still, lives are the same as blue coins. death music should make fun of somebody and or put them down you failed you shouldn't die and then have happy cheery music saying try again. hotel isn't annoying only the first level or even the second one. games are meant to be challenging, if you want something easy go play kirbys epic yarn where you can't die where there's no such thing as challenge.
Fraxlevein Not being funny but most of your bad reasons are down to the fact that you don't seem very good at the game or just seem stupid 'the death music'
Now don't get me wrong some of your reasons are fair enough like the recycling of battles etc but the only reason for that is that this game was rushed to be finished in time for the game cubes release date and in the grand scheme of things don't make that much difference to the game
It really just sounds like you're not very good at the game and listed it all as that's why it's bad.
Basically what I'm reading is: "It's too hard for me, I like easy games."
If you want a dull easy game go play color splash.
Now for me to point out some other things you said.
- I loved the shit out of the hotel levels.
- Losing Flood adds some more difficulty and variety to the game every now and then, so of course you don't like it. It's also strange you'd say that, since most people's gripe with the game comes from Flood himself.
- "No games need lives." So you're saying basically every Main Mario game is bad?
- I find the comment about the giant blooper ridiculous. Is there seriously an issue with fighting it twice?
- A lot of your complaints seem to be about repetitiveness and a lack of variety, when Sunshine has in my opinion the most variety out of any 3D Mario game. Especially the get from point A to point B games. (Not to say those are bad) I'll give you repetitive goo piranha plants, as it's pretty much you're only valid point.
- "Some blue coins are too hidden" Really... are you actually saying that having to explore a little to find them is a bad thing.
- "Touching an enemy can send you flying" Wow. God forbid there's an enemy that does more than sit there and watch you play the game. God forbid there's an enemy that does exactly what an enemy is supposed to do! 0_0 BLASPHEMY!
Basically to me, it just seems like you're really bad at games, and want any hint of difficulty to be removed.
I'm in the process of developing a new game that'd be perfect for you. It's called... "Line!"
See basically there's this straight line, and you have to like walk across it. No enemies, no blockades, no nothing!
Be careful though, it might be slightly challenging to you, as you don't seem to even know how to use a controller.

What a great time to get this in my recommended.
I really love how it starts out as a vacation. It really shows how human the characters can be, plus Mario's love for food in the intro is cute, and adds a shred of more character to him.
I also love how Mario faced real problems, like, well Jail.
Super Mario Sunshine doesn't need defending!
It's got so much creative, colorful, charm, it can defend itself. Just thinking about it has caused an endless Delfino Plaza music loop to play in my head.

I still think it's an good game. But not that good.
You sir have nailed almost everything that makes Sunshine my favorite 3D Mario. The one thing I have to add is the atmosphere that Sunshine has. Being able to see different stages from the one you're in and seeing how the stages progress through the events of gathering the Shine Sprites. It feels like Mario is exploring a world that doesn't revolve around him but he affects in major ways. It kind of makes him more believable as a hero too; he doesn't just save the princess, he directly helps the local townsfolk and gains their trust as he goes. It's part of the reason I'm so pumped for Odyssey
I always loved and it's awesome Super Mario Sunshine because the character's story environment and voice acting and even introduce a couple of new character's I love it so much and it's one of my favorite mario/nintendo game 💝

For now, it would be awesome to get a Super Mario Sunshine HD remake (ala Wind Waker HD) in preparation for a possible sequel. I'd get that HD re-release the minute it came out.
I agree i Personaly would pre-fer a HD Remake over a sequel as that would kill Sunshine's Unquieness but if they do a HD remake it would not be a bad idea to add a little extra content!

My biggest issue with Super Mario Galaxy is that the game is just too easy. I can understand and accept that people found certain tasks and areas in Sunshine to be laborious and excessively difficult, but the variety present within it made Sunshine a much more satisfying and engaging experience for me than Galaxy.

I agree, Galaxy felt linear and boring, it holds your hand the whole time and gives you nothing truly special or memorable in my opinion
They made Galaxy easy and accessible to make up for the Wii's casual audience

Arlo, what are your thoughts on Super Paper Mario, a game that scared Nintendo into never making another story-heavy game? Because now that I think about it, it IS convoluted: there are two prophecies, an alternate reality with a mirror side and then was Luigi all along.

I saw it, but it wasn't the subject of the video, all of the other Paper Marios were, this one was merely skipped over with a brief mention.
In his Problem with Paper Mario video, he states that he likes the writing and story, but found the gameplay to be just average.

TBH I loved Galaxy so much, but Sunshine is my favorite for the reasons you espoused. Enhanced movement systems, variety even if its weird, story even if its simple, and a whole lot more. You didn't touch on it, but even in a series with such iconic music as Mario, I found myself truly loving Sunshine's soundtrack. I love the channel Arlo! I'm glad I subbed.
I totally agree, Arlo! I really miss adventure-based Mario games. It's a shame that they had to leave it at Sunshine, because as you said, it is a very flawed game - they could have followed it up with a truly spectacular adventure Mario game in the same vein, but they went more down the simplified, A to B route.

Why Gen 3? Gen 4 is easily the most hated and deservingly so, I don't hear many Gen 3 complaints.

Umm...People love Gen 3, and it's nuts and bolts that gets all the hate. And the pre 06 games don't get much hate either.
It is like you are talking from my heart. My father bought me this game when i was young and i loved this game so much. Even when i was older i did a 100% run with all 242 shines just because i had so much fun with it (well except the really hard shines like pachinko machine or the leaf in the river one..) .
This game is like a second home to me. It's simply my childhood.

The reason I love Sunshine it's because of it's level design, it doesn't feel like a bunch of squares lazily put together *cough* like in 3D World *cough* , the levels have personality and a much more cohesive and interesting design than most other Mario games. Galaxy it's the best one in my opinion, but Sunshine's levels are such a refreshing change of pace in comparison to most other Mario games. (Also guys don't get mad at me for the 3D world joke, the game's ok, I don't hate it)

Found this in my recommendations again. I've been thinking about this game again recently thanks to 3D All-Stars, so I guess this is as good an excuse as any...
I dunno if this is a hot take, but I think Sunshine has the best core movement in the series. Like, by a lot. Mario's ability to get around is just about unmatched. Slides, water slides and momentum carried from jumping out of a slide afford Mario very fast horizontal movement, while Backflips, Sideflips, the Spin Jump, the Triple Jump and Wall Jumps allow him to move vertically with ease. Aside from the Spin Jump, all of these are very easy to use for even lower-level players and they all carry a great feel. The Spin Jump is harder to master, but can afford some really impressive height and distance both. Also notable, wall jumps can be performed diagonally. While this does make it harder to line it up with precision, it also opens up some really cool maneuvres. And all of that is before FLUDD, which is not just great for correcting mistakes, but if you get good at it, can really aid the movement even further, like with the aforementioned water slides. Techniques like spin spraying and shotgun blasts also feel great to use and are naturally integrated into Mario's basic moveset. I think Sunshine speedruns are quite fun to watch thanks to how much is available in the way of movement.
So here is the depressing part. Sunshine is at its best when it asks the player to utilize Mario's movement abilities and presents platforming challenges. ...But the level design sadly isn't built to encourage it much in most levels and the physics engine is kind of a disaster for the most part. This is why I adore playing around in Delfino Plaza. Bianco Hills, Noki Bay and to an extent Ricco Harbor are also solid levels to play around with Mario's abilities. Whereas mostly flat stages or cramped/indoors environements... LOOKING AT YOU, SIRENA BEACH... tend to just fall flat and turn out rather dull. Sunshine's bosses sadly don't fare much better and moving objects tend to be a bit finnicky in terms of collision. Also poor Yoshi.
Sunshine had the foundation to become something great, I really think so, but the direction just wasn't right and the time constraints too severe.
Then came Galaxy and it's one of the most insanely polished games you'll ever lay your eyes on with focused direction and just being a fantastic game in general, even if that came at the cost of significantly more restrained core movement compared to Sunshine.

@@cappy2282 Sunshine has the best movement in all of Mario. You can slide, bounce while sliding, spray the ground with water to go faster, and quickly switch between nozzles. Mario Odyssey comes in 2nd but you can’t gain a lot of speed and the long jump is very weak.
In Mario Galaxy you literally have no momentum. The most advanced trick is to long jump and do a spin. Even in the first 2D Mario, you can gain speed and bounce off of enemies.

Yes you're absolutely right. Mario is so fun to control in Sunshine. It might be my favorite moveset as well.
And ya Galexy is just to constrictive. The levels are nice (I guess) but I don't like how slow and weird moving Mario felt.
