New Volkswagen Amarok review: Everything you need to know!

- This is the all-new Volkswagen Amarok!
Now there’s one thing about this new Amarok that really sets it apart from its predecessor... Underneath the skin, it’s pretty much a Ford Ranger! VW has just gone to work on it, adding some new body panels and updating some of the interior, but otherwise, it’s pretty much just a Ranger!
But either way, let’s see if this is one pick-up that you need to consider. Starting with the design, it’s clear from the rear that the Amarok brought in new body panels over the Ranger as you have a big Amarok wording embossed into the tailgate. We also have the Pan Americana trim on this edition, so we get some smart metal bars that sit along the edge of the load bed. Along the side, there are running boards, and upfront, the Pan Americana trim means we have a matte dark grey effect running through the bottom of the grille, which really adds to the imposing look of this pick-up.
Step inside and the familiarity with the Ranger becomes clear. The centre console and infotainment set-up are identical, with a big vertical screen in the centre of the dash. All-in-all the cabin is pretty well made, with soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. The infotainment system has been taken across from the Ranger, which is a good thing! Although, despite the Amarok coming with some physical buttons, you still have the use the touchscreen to control the climate.
When it comes to engine choices, there are three options. The entry-level is a 2-litre turbo diesel that can deliver 170hp and comes with a manual gearbox. Next up is a 2-litre turbo diesel that comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, with the ability to deliver 205hp. But the range-topper is a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel, which also comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, along with the ability to produce 240hp.
The price of the new Amarok starts from around £41,000, rising all the way up to around £57,000 for this top-of-the-range model. But is it worth it? Or should you go for a Hill or Ranger instead? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Thanks for mentioning South Africa and yes we agree with you mate, you're the best at what you do.
Nice review of the new Amarok. If going for the new model, I'd just go ahead and get the Ranger.
From the old model, the interior soft touch dash and door cards are a definite improvement - can take or leave the big screens etc. However, the old V6 is more powerful stock and becomes insane for a pickup when worked on (definite contender for a remapped raptor). In addition, average around 38-40MPG easily driving the VAG V6 with just shy of 600 miles out a tank, low 30s if driving harder which really isn't required given the torque low down and speed limits on roads.
You should race it against the previous gen V6 Amarok
Would love to see your in-depth take on the New Ranger Raptor. Especially since you've driven crazy stuff like the Mammoth.

@@AIl2jithe VW AMAROK looked like downgraded Ford F150 for some reasons.
It looks really nice, I had the previous Amarok V6, which was superb. The 3.0 V6 diesel in this one is the latest iteration of the troublesome 2.7/3.0 Lion engine developed by FoMoCo and PSA. It helped to considerably damage Land Rover's unreliable reputation when applied to the Range Rovers and Discoverys. Lots and lots of info online. I hope they managed to address the issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if they persist.
Otherwise a lovely car and hopefully will be reliable for its future owners.
Being American, trying to keep track of the worldwide Ranger situation, let alone the engines is so confusing lol. Is that the 3L Powerstroke Diesel, or a Duratorq...?
Ford has done heaps of things to the engine to most likely fully emit the issues that the range rovers had.
US media have completely failed the American population. How come not every Americans at this point know the following critical facts.

When BOTH US´s parties receive the majority of their income from corporations they both sell their opinions for next term long before the voters turn up. Stop the insane lobby laws that judiciary would be defined as corruption in ANY EU nation! Politicians tend to serve those that pay their wages and that should be the American taxpayers. To expensive for them not to! The electoral college are undemocratic by design and although it might served a stabilising purpose when introduced it today deny the American democracy to earn it´s credibility to be just that. A democracy are built on a one man one vote, that counts, principle.
You deserve better USA. You deserve the option of voting for those you like rather than having to choose your least worst candidate.
You deserve a multi party democracy with a single parliament. A democracy based on 1 man 1 vote, that counts! THEN you will suddenly see that your REAL problems CAN be dealt with and solved while you laugh all the way to the bank!
The ROI on a off shore windmill park are now below 6 years. That are an absurd good investment! Combine with green hydrogen production and forget all about stupid batteries. The energy content in liquid green hydrogen are much higher than in gasoline! Green hydrogen are made with electricity from sun or wind and water and when green hydrogen are burned it only emits......wait for it......Water!
Please change or yu will have the power to drag an entire planet down with you. An American emits more CO2 than 10 Indians, just to give an example. And that are based on number excluding aviation and you fly more than other. It are based on own production and consumption meaning that all your imports CO2 emissions when produced are counted in those nations CO2 emissions. YOU HAVE TO CHANGE or we all die out eventually. Extra like for the Ingenieur 😁🙏🏻
Would go for the Ford ranger though, even as a German, somehow I like the design more.
you should comment about the transmission and axle problems present on previous versions. The second point is that what countries this version is able to sell and if they intend to go all around the world!
What problems ? Mine has never missed a beat.
Thanks for the review 👏
Great review like always 👍🏽
Agree. Seems like Carwow reviews always done the justice.
In the Netherlands we are not allowed to drive Pick Ups due to very high taxes.
I think you can't help noticing that it's a Ranger, this side already delivers... even the front side already reminds me of the Volks design... but at least on the German one you can tell it's new and not just another restyling as it happens in the Ranger... it may not even have been bad only when they point out that it is a new generation I really hope that it is all new and in the Ford it seems that only the front design is new, and the side panels, but they just being readjusted with a new format, I don't doubt that the whole structure is the same and in my view this can't be considered new!
This is just the start of the vw / Ford collaboration can’t wait to see the new transporter / transit , it’s end of an era for vw commercials , RIP
I'm here to confirm that your South African viewers know EXACTLY what you mean 🤣

A nice pick-up . For every day work and life. I think that the model 240 hp diesel is quite expensive. But we are not in the US and we must follow the rules of our countries.
As a watch enthusiast Mat's IWC Ingenieur stole the show for me! What a great watch, we watch nerds love it when a watch and its owner exude this ''bang on!'' sentiment. Wear it in good health and happy times, and the truck was more impressive than I thought!
Amarok is like Ford Ranger that has grown 250kgs in weight.
Matt if you guy's have the gwm (great wall motors) p series LT 4x4 the top of the range bakkie/ light truck. Test it, review it, even off road. Check it out. Awesome futures, stuff you get in mercedes s class.
Great Wall did offer a pickup in the UK some years ago but it was a terrible machine and they sold very few. They pulled out of the UK when emission controls tightened I believe.

8:41 ooof I'm in the US and I knew about that one! "Highway robbery" if you catch my drift 😂
Mat gives the best reviews
Actually there is a single cab version of the Amarok..maybe not in the UK
I agree. This is because in recent years the single cab and two wheel drive versions collectively took about 1% of total sales. Personally I would take an extended cab with the mid-length loadbed but not a single cab pickup. Indeed that would be my preferred option but nobody stocks them any more in the UK and they are factory order only. Indeed Ford make them but they don’t offer them in the UK currently just as VW do not offer the basic single cab work truck. They would be competing with the likes of Isuzu for a tiny margin. Remember that Mitsubishi, Nissan, Renault, Fiat and Mercedes used to offer pickups in the UK and Europe but have given up the market.
I have this model and it’s pretty good, massive at first but after a week of driving it it’s much more manageable. And if you’re gentle it will do 30-32 mpg on a long journey. Towing is effortless with the v6, 3 plus ton easily.
I love this truck
Also, jay Leno wearing Lederhosen, which is something I would watch
Im assuming Matt is refering to dash cams in South Africa and getting hijacked?
Are you sure about the lack of availability of the Raptor’s rear coil springs? The top Adventura model has the Raptor’s reduced payload of around 650kgs which makes me suspect that it has coils but with a luxury road emphasis rather than sporty offroad as with Raptor. The disadvantage of the reduced payload is that it prevents HMRC classifying them as ‘dual purpose vehicles’ which means that they do not qualify for VAT repayment which immediately makes them uncompetitive for VAT registered business buyers.
All variants are limited to 10mph lower speed limits than cars or car-derived vans on UK ordinary roads and dual carriageways, respectively down to 50mph on A and lesser roads and 60 on dual carriageways. They can all do 70 on motorways of course unless otherwise indicated or towing a trailer.
On the money, very poor from VW. Can’t see them selling many Aventura’s
Going by any Ranger/Amarok I've encountered on the road, they're doing at LEAST 15 over the speed limit at all times.

First-gen Amarok used VW's 2,967 cc V6 - second-gen uses the same 2,993 cc V6 as Jaguar and Land Rover used to offer
Exposed rear cup holders are better than the retractable ones. I have a 4 and a 5 years old kids, they break anything that slides. Great bakkie, but I'd still go for the Ford Ranger.

Matt, you call it the German Hilux, but does to live up to this title? Does it have the legendary reliability of the Hilux?
I thought so!! reminds me of when Mazda sold a rebadged Ford Ranger. You should of flown across the pond to Utah this month. Ford allowed the Car Reviewer types to run the Raptor around the dirt/mud tracks.
As a Canadian, its wild to me that you would call this a large truck.
