Pausing at 1:41, you can see the Angel Larvae bursting THROUGH the stone on the back, implying that this has to happen in order for the Pilgrim to become an Angel.
This implies to me that if the Angel Larvae isn't strong enough to burst through the stone, it explodes out backwards instead, through the ribcage. This creates a Pilgrim Butterfly instead.
The stones could be a rite of passage for the Angel itself, and the Pilgrims are compelled to wear them for this reason.

The whole series is partly about the existential threat of the curse, ie, losing yourself and becoming hollow, but also about how no matter how much power and status one attains it remains a fundamental part of your being. "Mark my words Ashen One, you remain among the accursed," that sort of thing. The pilgrims are hollow but retain their intelligence (bear in mind this is just my interpretation) because they've embraced this truth and cast their identities and worldly attachments aside. Yoel was "once a sorcerer," and the pilgrim in the Dreg Heap "was once the wet nurse of royalty," but those earthly roles have ceased to define them. Their only goal is to die and be reborn, so they both embody and transcend the vicious cycle that defines the Souls gameplay loop and it's overarching themes. Honestly I think the hubris of placing yourself above all the "worthless, faceless undead" that are actually your fellow man is adequately rubbed in when an Angel that spawned from a lowly hollow disintegrates you with its lasers.

Hollows in my opinion are those who have lost their purpose in life - That's why when NPCs survive their questlines and can't fulfill their duties/lose hope that they might ever be able to fulfill their purpose, or lose their closest friends, end up being hollows you can find and kill in the world. We can imagine that if we abandoned our undead character for good on their quest, they would eventually become exactly like them, because we lost the will to go on with our duty.

It was originally going to be revealed that Kaathe manipulated Gertrude into causing Lothric's collapse by being the "angel" that she saw, and he would inform the player of the Lord of Hollows ending, albeit this was ultimately cut with this role given to Yuria.

The pilgrims are one of several aspects of DSIII that don't feel... finished. They're apparently important enough to be featured in the opening cinematic, but in-game... to call their presence "understated" is an "understatement", hueh. Not that I wanted them to be the centerpiece of the story or anything, but I'm still not 100% sure what they even... are. I don't need to know everything about them, in fact I don't want to, that's not how Dark Souls lore goes, but usually I at least have a grasp on the basic concept. Like, I was under the impression that they WANTED to transform until now, and even now I remain unconvinced of the contrary since I can find hardly anything to confirm what's being said here. I still don't get what their pilgrimage entails or anything of the sort, and that lack of info doesn't feel intentional. As if they were supposed to have a bigger role (as implied by their unused animations) but that was cut.
The pus of man is another example of this sort of thing. At first you're led to believe that this'll be an important plot element, because the first boss you fight exhibits this theme and some early enemies do too, and then it largely vanishes and is never explained beyond basic fan speculation. In that particular case I don't mind because I find them to be rather silly, but as for the pilgrims I love their design and some of their implications. I wish they were more fleshed out. Again, in that Dark Souls way where "fleshed out" mostly means "gives you just enough answers to get you asking more questions".

Puss of Man is Abyss corruption-experiment, this also suggest your existance as failed test subject that didn't fail. This goes with story of you being occelote. With Pilgrims l'm not sure for what their pilgrimage is for. But big role of them is so you can take 5 free levels and get hollowing for certain ending. That suggest those creatures are from Londor.

Pilgrims definitely wanted an end to the age of fire, they probably made their way to lothric to beg prince Lothric not to link the flame. This would also explain why as pilgrim butterflies they help guard the bridge to the archives along with DSA.
I forget if they have a link to pontiff.
As for pus of man tho I have no idea, really unfinished imo was def supposed to have a bigger role before they scrapped the original story

    • @Shawndomondo
      @Shawndomondo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +126

I really like the theory of the main character being Ocelotte, it makes some sense because if Oceiros’ experiments ended up killing Ocelotte the body would be dumped unceremoniously in the intended graves and left to become Unkindled Ash.
About the Pilgrims, I think they certainly could have roots in Londor. It just occurred to me that maybe the Pilgrims are manifestations of the rot caused by the The First Sin and the kindling of the First Flame, in the same way the Unkindled Ash arose from the fallen Undead who failed at kindling the fire. With the Pilgrims fearing metamorphosis and their impending transformation, they yearn for death because it ceases their need to exist in The Age of Fir. They’re afraid of the potentialities of that transformation because they know it’s not natural. So they work in hopes of ushering in the Age of Man by guiding the Lord of Hollows, in Yoel’s case at least, because the Pilgrims are driven by the natural cycle of the world that has been halted and warped by Gwyn’s fear of death and losing his kingdom. Similarly, the Ashen One is driven by the unnatural force yearning for powerful souls in order to rekindle the fire…until they meet Old Yoel that is

    • @Writh811
      @Writh811 2 ปีที่แล้ว +116

The Pilgrims are indeed from Londor. If you follow the Lord of Hollows path, it is a Pilgrim that subdues Anri. Yoel is from Londor as well. I am not 100% sure why they make a Pilgrimage to Lothric, I can only assume it to protect him as long as he isn't linking the fire as well as to possibly convince him to become the Lord of Hollows. The reason I think they want to die has everything to do with transformation. If they live and experience transformation, it will be violent and painful and they will become pilgrim butterflies. However, if they "die" eventually they will become the "angel" things of the dreg heap.
The puss of man, first big difference between the folks dealing with this and the pilgrims. Pilgrims got a big rock on their back holding in the darkness. Puss of Man's darkness is just busted out of their back and growing over them. When the Darkness emerges suddenly without ever having been forcefully restrained it seems to take on draconic qualities, this is like, counter what some may say, the more natural course. The Pilgrims hold that darkness in and that seems to have an effect on them. Compared to puss of man hollows, Pilgrims are literally darker, with dark iron skin tone. This extra "cooking" probably the difference between something trying to be a dragon and something trying to be a bug, I mean angel.

The way I see it Angels (which include locusts, butterflies, Corvians and those strange giant flies born from the rotten humanity's blood from Ariandel's painting) are basically Demons but for the Dark instead of fire.
Even the name technically gives it away, despite their origins being swapped (Demons come from life and light, Angels come from death and darkness).
The Abyss is the opposite of Chaos, which are both a failed attempts to control their respective force (Dark and fire).
And both are a seedbed for life, albeit Chaos is more predatory while the Abyss seems to create almost opportunistic and parasitic life.
Both Chaos and the Abyss take the form of a liquid (lava for chaos, stagnating water or even the deep for the abyss).
However, Demons seem to work more or less like mutations, and the Chaos almost like radiation. Angels seem to be an infestation of overgrown darkness created by the person's humanity.
In my opinion, the only reason Lothric started worshipping angels was out of their culture, steeming from both Dragon Worshipping (wings) and the Anor Londo's gods (golden-hued magic).
Londor's pilgrims, if they really come from the future, might have known this and have used that as a chance to conquer Lothric, maybe for the whole "Age of the Deep", so they are trying to find the tallest point in the world to survive.
Also, if the deep is linked to the abyss and the dark, and it's basically going to flood the world of Dark Souls, it makes sense that creatures of the Dark would evolve as winged insect-like humanoids since the world would probably be a giant stagnating ocean, and insects prosper in stagnating waters.
Also, I think the grubs and the whole covenant of Rosaria, being set in the Cathedral of the Deep, seems to stem from this: they want to push humans to evolve into angels through rebirth, however by being an artificial "Angelification" they are just reborn as larvas. basically they wasted their "privilege" to become angels by being to scared of the incoming end of the world and taking a shortcut through Rosaria.

I find very interesting the description of the cleric robe: "They bore large covers on their backs to ensure that they would not become seedbeds for spreading darkness."
It's the same thing the Pilgrims do. What they are referring to as seedbeds for spreading darkness is probably the Pus Of Men, those dark blobs that come out from hollows in Lothric. That's what Pilgrims are actually trying to avoid. Covering their back is probably a ritual used to suppress the corruption of the Dark that sometimes manifests sprouting out of the back. Also the Pilgrimage they're doing is meant to prove their faith, so they can successfully suppress the Abyss inside of them. Faith as a means to suppress the Dark I think is a theme in Dark Souls 3. For example: Lord Wolnir and his bracelets, Filianore sealing away the Dark Soul, the pilgrims...

I think that's kinda the purpose of the big rocks on their backs. I read in another comment that the flavor text for the cleric set states that clerics would wear large covers on their backs in order to deter the creation of another seedbed for darkness. (or the abyss/deep) Which is why those spinning turtle clerics in the RInged City have those giant rocks on their backs, because they were actually trying to prevent the spread of the roots that you find on the enemies of the Ringed City, like the overgrown lothric knights and the big headless knights. If we assume that this practice spread to the pilgrims it would make sense why they turn into these weird tree looking things, because they became a seedbed for the abyss just like the Pontiff and other Ringed CIty enemies did.
It also makes sense when you consider that the Pontiff's in game model was supposed to be the final boss during early development, and a lot of the Ringed City's enemies have the exact same root/tree motifs because they were supposed to be descendants of those corrupted by the abyss. (Which is why the RInged Knights have darksigns on their armor, to prevent more of their humanity from leaking out of their bodies and turning into something like the Pus of Man or Iudex Gundyr) Ultimately it all stems from abyssal corruption, and it explains why so many enemies have weird tendrils/roots sticking out of them, and why the Locust Preachers try to convince you to spread the abyss.

I think the larvae form "that control the angel" is not their "good" side of the evolution. The true form is what the Pilgrim woman at the dreg heap entrance become: A true angel.
This angel has no larvae that "controls it", nor does it respawns when killed. I think this is what they want to become, and in fact, the only true angel we meet in the whole DLC is this one, the other ones are only illusions created by the pilgrims turned into larvae, that might even become pilgrim butterflies later on, when the larvae evolves. Because usually, larvae is just the first state of evolution, and they usually evolves in butterflies or moth (and well, pilgrim butterfly).
Maybe it is just a question of... Well, luck? I mean, supposedly, those pilgrims die and die again, trying to darken themselves with sigils, to burden themselves to feed their thing on their back.
When the thing matures, nor they die and it turns into a larvae and later into a pilgrim butterfly (bad ending I guess), nor they have the luck to evolve into a real angel.
And those larvae are just using the illusion of what they desperately wanted to be but never will anymore, an angel.
And there's certainly an other path to them, which is that they failed to even evolves, and turned into man grubs.
They go through the same process as the Pilgrims: Dying over and over again (That's how you build up the sigil, you know?), which led for some of them to the man grub state (because they tried to much, and failed).
There's also a lot of stuff linking the road of sacrifices (which is the path to the cathedral) to the ringed city (the symbol is everywhere, and is also the symbol of Londor btw) and the man grubs to the divine and angels (casters use divine spells, one is even guarding Gertrude's cell) and, over that, there's just so many statues of angelic creature in the cathedral overall.
Anyway, they clearly didn't chose an easy life when they decided to go on a pilgrimage.

    • @primary_magic1227
      @primary_magic1227 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Doesnt the game outright show you how man grubs are made? By interacting too much with rosaria. (Respec more than 5 times) pretty sure they're unrelated to the pilgrims.

@@primary_magic1227 Yes, the message prompt "Do you wish to be reborn?" and "Further rebirth is not possible during this lifetime. Persisting will transform you into a grub." when doing it 5 times and trying again . I was thinking about that when I wrote it. I just deleted a whole paragraph about Rosaria because it was not useful and too long though I think I actually deleted a line or two that were making this part more understandable!
My last paragraph was here to show the similarities in what the Pilgrims are doing and how the men grub became men grub.
What I was implying was that the Pilgrim are actually going to Rosaria to be resurrected (reason why the "wooden tombs" in the road of sacrifices are actually the Londor symbol), and well, some decided to go past the 5 resurrections and became grubs (I think the number 5 is gameplay wise, lore wise it might be something more random based on someone's will/strength or simply luck).
That's what I was meaning by "some pilgrims failed to evolve", the larvae didn't grow to maturity because their host turned into grubs before they could.
I suppose that it is a part of the Pilgrimage in a way: They went to Lothric Castle to evolve into real angels, and if they "failed their ascendancy" they went back (or were brought back) to Rosaria to try again, and again, and again... Ultimately becoming grubs.

Dark Souls 3, compared to the other Souls games, is a game about what happens when everything completely falls apart. Like how if you run a computer system for months, the timer will overflow and everything will begin to break down and function in 10 millisecond increments instead of milliseconds.
The Dreg heap is what happens when the Age of Fire has run so long, that the world itself is collapsing into itself. Everything is covered in ash and smoke, places and kingdoms from different time periods, buried on top of each other for millennia, all mesh together at the same time. The ruins of Lothric sit upon the ancient poison of Earthen Peak which has collapsed on top of the eons old Firelink altar.
The Pilgrims are no exception. I imagine they're what happens when the Undead Curse falls apart like the rest of the world. It can only exist for so long before it warps and mutates into something terrifying. And evidently, if they wear stone shells to prevent the butterflies from bursting out of their backs, it happens often enough to be common practice.

I'm convinced that the Pilgrims are actually the Pilgrims of the Dark from DS2. In Dark Souls 2 they were a strange group talented in sorcery, but drawn to the Dark. Surrounding themselves in dark. Performing their covenant puts us up against the Dark Lurker whom is a bizarre sort of angel with no context of further background. I was thinking perhaps the ascension of them is conquering light or dark inside them to yield further darkness, but maybe such a banishment is not doable alone. Similarly the Pilgrim we first meet would make us stronger by giving us Dark Sigil. And Anri would have a few also from a Pilgrim whom had followed them to give to us. It's also at this point that dying starts to hollow us. One guess I have is that it's all linked to New Londo and Londor being in touch with the Dark arts and New Londo itself once a place for hollows and the Abyss that would be seen attacked and drowned, no longer safe for those who might seek it. It's also no mystery Yuria knows Kaathe and wished to fulfill his desires as she has dialogue for it. Which only leaves the question "why do the Pilgrims change?" My personal take is it's by their embrace of change to either light or dark more predominantly in a hollowing fashion or by the amount of Dark Sigil they've achieved.

The way I like to think of it, the angels represent "luck," which is depicted as an active force in DS3, and regarded unique to humans. Literally, they are guardian angels protecting their hosts, the metamorphosed pilgrims.
That would even explain why angel worship was deemed heretical. Instead of honoring Gwyn and the legacy of linking the fire, angels turned humanity's eyes inward, giving them hope to trust in themselves. Angels, despite the pale light they radiate, are creatures born of darkness-after all, their light robbed Gertrude of sight. Should the masses understand this, the fire would undoubtedly fade.
It's also worth mentioning that both Gertrude's cage and the Twin Princes' throne room are littered with angels' feathers. Lothric even casts the same pale sorcery as the angels, and the way he's perched on Lorian's back even reminds me of the angel larvae sprouting from the backsides of the fallen pilgrims...
Maybe in Oceiros' experiments to harness his royal blood, Lorian was inadvertently born alongside an incarnation of his own guardian angel? Even their combined souls look strangly reminiscent of the angels' wings, and Lothric clearly shows no interest in linking the fire. Lorian accepted his brother's curse, and similarly to Gertrude after her visitation from an angel, we find the once powerful demon-slaying prince now blind and mute.

Lothric himself even casts the same energy projectile as the Darklurker in his boss fight. The Darklurker does seem to be for the dark and shares the connection to the pilgrims. It might be weirder than that. Time and space are convoluted in the dreg heap and the ringed city, and you get subtle evidence of this here and there. It's possible the larva and the adult forms just happen to exist at the same time because of this, which is why killing the larva kills the adult but not vice versa.
You can also find an angel that doesn't have a larva at one point, to show that there doesn't actually have to be a larva at the same time.

Second is at the bonfire right before the remains of Harvest Valley. Its larva is pretty well hidden in a low cliff.

    • @punishedbrak4255
      @punishedbrak4255 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Seems to be the concentration of Humanity/Dark Soul in the Ringed City, Gwyn having locked away a huge portion there "at the end of time", when everything begins to merge into a singularity within the flame, including the former pieces of the Dark Soul. Sapient maybe, but remember how animalistic and cannabalistic *everything* becomes when Saturated and Concentrated with Dark, even us, and things like Manus, the citizens of Oolacile, the Locusts, etc. This is because it is the very nature of the Dark Soul to seek itself out and consolidate itself, usually through eating or consumption of anothers "Humanity"/ Dark Soul.
To me it seems the Angels are a more "condensed" or consolidated version of the skeletal and tree-like Butterfly and the natural progression of what Londor Pilgrims would become if the World/Flame/Existence weren't in it's Death Throes by the time of DS3. Think of them as a more "complete" version of the skeletal Butterfly.

They want to avoid the "pus of man" branch of their evolution ,not the pilgrim butterflies.
The pilgrim butterflies are a step closer to the evolution for them to eventually be dragons.
If they stay "alive" and get the "pus of man" they will turn into snakes.
They want to achieve perfection, they don't want to be imperfect.
The "angels" pilgrims are the larvae phase of the pilgrim butterflies, I mean we see their empty husks and everything.
The dragons/wyverns at lothric castle have the pus of man in them, so they used to be human.
The first pilgrim butterfly we see at the dragon slayer armor looks similar to the dragons/wyverns we saw earlier.
Their armor is called the "clerics set" as well, so their whole worship is based around the idea of the shell in their back.
Also it is interesting that the "pus of man" is an abyss creature that comes from abyss corruption, the pilgrims come most likely from londo because there is a church there according to Yuria.
Londo is very heavily influenced by the abyss.

Same place, kind of different name.
Anor londo is in the boreal valley and almost nothing to do with this.
The head of the church of londo is Kathee from ds1 and Yuria mentions him in the game still as such.
Kathee was supposed to be the third phase of the twin princes boss fight before he became cut content for the game.

Those aren't my assertions, they are literally still in the game.
Kathee as a boss fight is confimed cut content.
There are literally statues of him still in the game today.
You can open up the game and check them.
Yuria screams "Kathee I failed thee.." when she dies and that is still in our current game today.
What else do you want as evidence to confirm the stuff I said ?
She literally names him and shows affinity for him.
Guess who was responsible for new londo in ds1?
      Kathee.
Isn't it weird how an unrelated character from londor such as Yuria, as you claim, knows a character that is very known for his influence in New Londo?
Isn't it weird that both have the same goal, to find a new dark lord?
Isn't it weird that names of the places are almost identical as well?
There is zero evidence on the stuff you talk about though and I don't know from where you got those "evidences" and "speculations".
I suggest that you should just replay ds3 again in a role playthrough style.
Also Londor almost has nothing to do with the Dreg Heap, Ringed City or "the end of the world" area other than that they are full of abyss and are related somewhat to hollows.
Londor is an area that we don't see in the game.
Kind of like astora or other kingdoms in the previous games.
