A shitty King like Aerys the Second arguably had the greatest Kingsguard in the history of Westeros.
Almost, Jaehaerys I had the the greatest kingsguard ever, because were chosen not by noble birth but by merit in the white cloak tournament, literally it ended up with the best fighters of the realm in their prime, and all so grateful that were willing to die without hesitation.
The Kingguards the best Knights but died in the wrong time and to a wrong king like the mad king and his son.
They're not the finest kingsguard but they're def up there. But nonetheless, it's such a Martin plotline to write.
@@ColdSleep name a better kingsguard or are you just disagreeing for the sake of it
@@erikw.1313 the kingsguard that jaeherys 1st had even Martin called them the greatest
Man you have to have really fucked up to have Arthur Dayne, prime Barristan Selmy, young Jaime Lannister, etc. roll up on you
@Richard Zander I hope someone falls for this cuz that's just natural selection
@@FirstOfTheMagi
I literally never fell for thesw even in the early 2000s.. Ppl now a days...
Jamie must have hated ned stark even more after hearing he killed his rolemodel, Arthur. I wonder if he suspected that ned used foul play when beating Arthur. It almost explains why he would fight him in season one.
I always interpreted it as Ned killing Arthur cemented his legend as a great swordsman. However, exaggerated it may be. Jaime was incredibly eager to fight Ned because he wanted to test his mettle with someone of an equal caliber to Arthur Dayne.
That’s why Jaime, in all of Season One, feels like he’s trying to find an excuse to draw blades with him at every turn. It also explains his anger and disappointment when the fight gets cut short. He never got to find out who was the better fighter.
@@jonbartolo8067 Absolutely!! And its so ironic/symbolic that his fight with ned was also abruptly cut short by foul play!
@@willyfred8706 you guys are confusing the book and the show.
@@thebystander1636
Nah. I’m just talking about the show.
IMO: fair fights never works in a real fight, nobody ever fights fair because
Arthur Dayne here coming up with the big brain play
Imagine taking a walk in the kingswood and getting shot with arrows by someone named Fletcher Dick
😂😂😂
😂😂😭😭
You know that a “Fletcher” is someone who makes arrows. And Dick is another name for Richard. So his name is literally Richard the arrow maker. Which is the author’s way of telling us, he is good with a bow and arrows.
🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
The fact that there is no happy ending makes this series awesome
Thanks man. Always wanted to know more about the kingswood brotherhood.
The thrice hanged, second time at the gallows.
_Looks around at his companions about to be hanged, the one on his left is sobbing. As he cries Longneck looks over at him and asks_ ,
"First time?"
"It's that sword of yours that I want."
Arthur Dayne: "Then you shall have it, Ser."
Poor choice of words, Dayne gave him the sword alright .
Wait I thought Dayne gave him Dawn and still beat him?
@@poenpotzu2865 Dayne didn’t give him Dawn. He slew him with Dawn. That’s how he gave it to him.
@@poenpotzu2865 shoved the sword right through that mfs smirk
Please keep them Song Of Ice And Fire videos coming as we wait for House Of The Dragon.
I agree I'd like Winds Of Winter before anything ffs
@Siberian Husky I hope you never get it
House of The Dragon is what happens when HBO runs out of ideas to sap The World of Ice and Fire of all its substance, so they just extend a story that we've already to heard to make us feel like we're watching seasons 1-6 of Gameo again. It's never gonna be the same.
Still waiting 😭😭
Not long now mate
I'm surprised Aerys even entertained any of Arthur's suggestions from the Smallfolk. Lucky he did
I think the kings wood becoming more threatening to the crown as they almost kidnapped Elia Martell, his council probably persuaded him or Gerold Hightower as Gerold and Aerys often spoke to one another
Well, Jamie may be as arrogant as possible, but he isnt a fool when it comes about being a good swordsmen. He knows that he is one of the best but he would never dare saying he is better than Ser Arthur Dayne.
In another chapter in the middle of his fight with Brienne he did believe that he will win a fight against dayne
@@NANINANI-cs6rn which makes since, I believe if you gave dawn to jaime, baristan and athur dayne then barristan would probably be the best , jaime second best and dayne third best but dayne would win if he had dawn and they didnt
@@godusopp2752 not exactly, Dayne and selmy were pretty much stated to be equal if dayne wasnt using dawn by Martin
When Jamie fought Ned in single combat in season 1, I instantly knew that Jamie could fight his own battles without others fighting them for him. It was a moment of his absolute 💯 prime despite a guard backed him up pushing a spear in the back of Ned's leg. Jamie got the fight he wanted, but he found the guards' actions dishonorable and hit him for good measure.
Do: all the battles in game of thrones
Hopefully a prequel series covers this event, would love to see Ser Arthur once more.
Hey man love the content, was wondering if you could maybe do a video explaining varimir 6 skins and his possible connections to bran through the pack etc. Another video i would watch would be one that digs into what magister illerio wants ..tyrion said he wants something "more than castles or gold"..just a thought..keep up the great work!
The King guards history before The Mad King, they seem to have up and down moments like they were from heroes to bad guy’s soldiers.
Toyne was a good fighter but he lacked stamina
GODS I WAS STRONG THEN
You still have some interesting video ideas for a song of ice and fire that's amazing
You said ulmer is the only one left alive. Its possible that the lady Arya met when she was with the brotherhood , the one that lived in the secret city up in the trees, who she said looked sick, is Wenda the white fawn.
I would recommend every reader to try listening to the books on Audio. Brings a different perspective. Will help with the wait for House Of The Dragon
Just began reading the books today. Already so much more than the show
Love your videos man, can’t wait till the House of the Dragon and The Winds of Winter!
You deserve more views my guy
Maybe he’s descended from the knight who had the gallows on his shield before Ser Duncan used it
That shield most likely belonged to a member from house Trant. They’re the only known family with a gallows as their sigil.
It’s possible the Smiling Knight is a Trant, but there’s nothing that really points to them specifically over any other house. Most likely the guy was just a common hedge knight.
There’s not really a correlation between a shield Dunk bought decades before and the Smiling Knight.
@@brendan9868 thanks for this!!
Nice vid 👍 your quality just gets better and better 😊 keep up the good work
I love how Merret tries to calm himself saying something like "as if this were the old kingwood brotherwood and not Dondarrion' s sorry lot" to me it shows how impressive this group was
The Demon of the Trident's eventual demise at the tusks of a boar has striking similarities to Mystery Babylon. Tammuz the son of Nimrod and Semiramis (allegedly, anyway) was also killed by a boar during a traipse through the forest. I've always taken Tammuz's death to be "evidence" that he wasn't really Nimrod's son, since Nimrod had been the mightiest man on earth before his own death. Somewhat similarly, Robert had lost all of his prodigious powers by the time of his ill-fated hunt. And neither was he the father of the children he thought were his own.
Another great one!
Can you make a Video what if Arthur Dayne joined the fight on the Trident I think Rhaegar would win and Robert lose. Or a video what if Rhaegar get King🤗
Realm would get another Mad king

7:21 wait is Jaime not wearing a helmet because he isn’t a KG yet?
I believe it was shortly after this that he was appointed.
The Smiling Knight isn't smiling anymore 😂
Um he died with a smile on his face so maybe he is
All skulls smile
@Winter Green chill bro, it's not that serious.
Thank you for all your videos. I finally understood the series. It's hard to understand earth things up here in Naboo.
Smiling Knight remind me of Joker or almost similar to The Batman Who Laughs
thanks for the video.
You deserve millions of subs
You said luckily for King Aerys 2 , he chose them.
I still believe that Ulmer shot Oswald Whent with an arrow to the hand. Not Hightower. And Whent is really Qhorin Halfhand who certainly survived the TOJ.
And Tormund is Gerold Hightower and Mance Rayder is Arthur Dayne!
@@PedroLucas-mg5je yes exactly!
In the corner of my eye the title looked like "The Kingswood Brotherhood love" and I was like damn Martin's getting heated out here.
“So many vows... they make you swear and swear. Defend the king. Obey the king. Keep his secrets. Do his bidding. Your life for his. But obey your father. Love your sister. Protect the innocent. Defend the weak. Respect the gods. Obey the laws. It’s too much. No matter what you do, you’re forsaking one vow or the other.”
I imagine the Smiling Knight as having a mad pathology. He would have a jolly, irreverent, mocking disposition. His knighthood is ill-gotten, but legitimate; perhaps anointed by a frightened captive Septon. He probably frequently invokes the customs and vernacular of knighthood, to an exaggerated degree. He should be a mysteriously elite, instinctive swordsman & fighter.
septons cant make knights, knights make knights, or kings.
@@zoid_on_youtube pretty sure clergy anoint them too, w/ blessed oils & accept their knightly vow.
@@TheDeadlyKnight maybe they can carry out the ceremony to anoint a knight, but only on orders of someone with the proper authority. Even a high lord doesnt have the right to make knights, unless that lord himself has also been knighted, so I really dont think any village septon can make knights as they please.
@@zoid_on_youtube Perhaps you’re right. A knight dubs a man, then Septon anoints him with the seven holy oils? Probably the most legitimate knighting custom. Most times, 1 has to take men’s word for it that they are in fact, a knight. Lords can dub knights too. I’m more sure of that, than I was of Septons. They don’t arbitrarily do it, because there’s significant liability & social pressure against lords dubbing unworthy knights. Most non-Andal Lords don’t participate at all. Robb Stark (never a knight) had multiple squires. I’m sure he could’ve dubbed them knights eventually. Robb might’ve been an Andal though, like Sansa or Catelyn. I’m not sure
Love it keep it up
Need unexpectedly got help from H.Reed who didn't want to wait for the fight to play out in case Ned lost the fight, Ned got jumped by Jamie's guards denying Jamie the pleasure of fighting like he was denied the pleasure of a full on fight with Sir Arthur, Ned delivered the King's Justice to those who abandoned the wall and gave the damned the pleasure of last words, he got justice delivered to him by the executioner while the king watched him get his head chopped off and wasn't even offered last words !
Irony, Karma, and Injustice for so many were delivered in this series !
He was nicknamed long neck because he managed to survive three hangings
Yeah I would join these guys they seem honorable
Also like Locke I hate the highborn
The Smiling Knight makes me think of the Joker 🤡.
I feel like Ser Authur Dane was only the best because he had to Dual-Handed Sword perk.
They say he is the greatest with Dawn, but without it he could still take on the likes of Jaime and Barristan.
The Smiling Knight was a madman.

Thanks
I wouldn't call these outlaws scum or pieces of shit, the entire monarchist system is incredibly one-sided and massively exploitative, they're bold out of desperation considering the fact that kings have massacred entire villages for less. When your enemy consists of "noble" mass murderers then you really have little choice but to stoop to a similar level when going up against them. This makes the branding, imo, hardly comparitable when the penalty for even looking at nobility IRL was death. So maybe let's stop defending a caste of privileged nobles and began understanding that the oppressed smallfolk are retaliating for good reason.
Good video
Soooo this has always bothered me.....literally one of the worst kings in the history of the Seven Kingdom, Aerys Targaryen Second of his name commonly known as "the Mad King", had what had to be the best kingsguard to ever exist together at one time...
