Saddest thing about the duo of Freys fostering at Winterfell, Big and Little Walder. You learn from them so much about Frey culture. Everyone intensely aware of their place in the line of succession to lordship of the Twins. Big Walder was born first hence getting the name Big Walder over the later born Little Walder. However because Big Walder was born to someone lower down in the line of heirs it is Little Walder who will inherit before him. 6:25 Head being shaved: other than being shaved because of lice, another reason people would shave their head back in the day is when they were ill, if they had a high fever.
I agree Merrit Frey had one chapter in which to tell his tale of woes. Jaime Lannister remembered once when thinking of the bandits in the Kingswood. He remembered Merrett as a terrible bully. This is one of George's many well crafted characters that inhabit the world of ASoIaF
I think Big Walder Frey, is going to turn out a lot more devious than you would assume. He drops so many little hints, he's like Sweetrobin, something big will happen around him.
it very common throughout history to use women's hair as a device; growing it long as a statement of pride, cutting it as a statement of humbleness or piety, shaving it as a form of social ostracism. a bit modern, but French women who had German boyfriends were often force shaved by their neighbors after WWII
Walder Frey always stole the show wether in the books or the show. Youre obviously supposed to hate him but his dirty grandpa vibes were funny af. Hes like a more sociopathic Hugh Hefner
So you can understand why it's a shock why Roslyn is actually decent-looking. People say that there are some decent-looking Freys aside from her but I'm not convinced
Jaime called Gatehouse Amy attractive and he very rarely calls anyone but Cersei attractive. Then you have Fair Walda who is probably the most attractive Frey girl. I recall Black Walder being considered an attractive man (by Frey standards?) which is why he has sex with all the other Frey girls and Lord Walder's later wives.
Roslin is the daughter of Walder and Bethany Rosby. Two of her brothers were absent from the Red Wedding, because they were considered too honorable, and were never seen again. Overall, the Rosby Freys seem to be the nice ones of the bunch. I supose she got her looks from the Rosby side, because Catelyn makes a comment when she meets her that the Rosbys are always gorgeous, but prone to illness. She also thinks Roslin looks pretty but will suffer immensely during childbirth, since she has very thin waistline that Catelyn describes as a Rosby feature.
@@edisonmichael6345 They weren't neccesarily too honerable, the other Freys just thought that they were loyal to Robb Stark, which is very plausible since one of them was Robbs squire despite being older than Robb and the other one accompanied Catelyn to Renly Over all it seems that all the Rosby Freys seem to have wanted to grow some power of their own by being close to house Tully/Stark considering they are almost last in the line of succession In the Feast of Crows , it is also mentioned that somebody is hiding and barricading the Rosby castle after the death of the last Rosby Out two Rosby-Freys are both pretty good candidats
Honourable Mentions: Any other Frey (except cutie 3.14 married to Edmure Tully) Edmure "Funeral pyre archer and unnecessary windmill procurer" Tully Liza "I'll poison my husband for Baelish's Littlefinger but I'll never stop breastfeeding my son" Tully Catelyn "I hate Jon Snow bc he's a motherless child and also I suck at hostage negotiations" Tully
R S L, c'mon man you can't give Edmure grief for fucking up the archery, he'd just lost his father and was overcome with grief and couldn't focus or keep still. The windmill on the other hand....
Whilst there's plenty of competent Freys (Like Lothar for example) and a few that don't look like weasels (As Catelyn mentions), I think Merret absorbed all their bad luck. They're a super interesting house, with members popping up everywhere (aiming to become High Septon before the Sparrow barges in, or fostered alongside Harry the Heir) the show does them a bit of a disservice by making them more one dimensional. They are still Freys though.
I did feel bad for him given the fact that he was captured, branded, and given an head injury. While he may have been a bad person given his Frey upbringing, he would not have been so pathetic if it wasn't for the outlaws attacking him.
But he's not bad for being a Frey though. There are decent Freys, both males and females. It's just sad how it is Stevron who had the worst legacy; Ryman, Edwyn, and Black Walder came from it.
I don't think the other squires literally made Merrett eat kettles of shit, I think it was like a metaphorical shit-eating, getting him back for all the bullying he did. I hope so..
I always wonder with stories like that if the girl was raped and then seen as a slut for that... maybe not but it’s always a thought I have with medieval style stories, seems possible
@@4Sim0n4 Them trying to rape her is not a stretch, they have been nuts, though anyone trying to rape and kill are nuts. High born girls have been raped or almost raped before...
Walder Frey arrived late at the Trident, hes lucky he didn't lose part of his lands for the fucking gull. Darry at the very least had the balls to side with the Targaryens from start to finish.
@Frank Castle Even with Jaime still in his hands, the Boltons could have tried to take him and give him to Tywin as proof of their loyalty, and to get the north. Without the Karstark and after the Greyjoy's raids, the war was over. The man who defeated Robb Stark was Robb himself, both with Jayne and killing Karstark.
Merrett Frey is the POV character from Feast For Crows if I recall correctly, the character from A Storm Of Swords is one of the plotting Night Watch guys

no there is illness that feeds off the scalp i don't know medicals name but many 3rd countries still suffer from it.
the closed caption for walder frey scene says I'm not gay yet unfortunately 8:38
Lmao that is great. And right before it says all the Fries are waiting for him to die.
Very unfortunate for his wives.
@@rtozier2011 married to a frey
@@faisalkamal4319 And a heterosexual one at that, so no chance of him leaving you alone
I really like how calm your voice is, it's very relaxing to watch your videos!
I want more character synopsis. This video was great as is all your other work.
One of my favorite chapters of the book for some reason, its just so brutal. I can't help but feel sorry for Merret to be honest though.
Ha... no
I agree Merrit Frey had one chapter in which to tell his tale of woes. Jaime Lannister remembered once when thinking of the bandits in the Kingswood. He remembered Merrett as a terrible bully. This is one of George's many well crafted characters that inhabit the world of ASoIaF
Merrett rhymes with ferret, which belongs to the same family as the weasel, which all Freys take after
It also sounds like "merit" which he is trying and failing to earn...
I loved that ending. "Unfortunately for you, we have a witness. What do you say m'lady?" **Nods** "You heard her boys.. string him up." 🤣
Awww, Walda. 💖 She was the only person in the Bolton family (and Frey tbh) that I liked.
I think Big Walder Frey, is going to turn out a lot more devious than you would assume. He drops so many little hints, he's like Sweetrobin, something big will happen around him.
it very common throughout history to use women's hair as a device; growing it long as a statement of pride, cutting it as a statement of humbleness or piety, shaving it as a form of social ostracism. a bit modern, but French women who had German boyfriends were often force shaved by their neighbors after WWII
yup, dutch women w german lovers post-ww2 had to do the same! lice is a good option, but my mind immediately went to the first option!
My guess is that daughter was shaved as a punishment for a offence of some kind.
The Frey’s.... is the twins like the Alabama of GoT?
Freys aren't that bad
More like Florida
@@ericaburke89 nah its Alabama
There's always Kentucky
They are the ugly but not that in reed lol
Walder Frey always stole the show wether in the books or the show. Youre obviously supposed to hate him but his dirty grandpa vibes were funny af. Hes like a more sociopathic Hugh Hefner
*heh*
Lady Walda in the show was a sweetheart. I felt so bad for her
So you can understand why it's a shock why Roslyn is actually decent-looking.
Probably only Fair Walda, Roslin and Gatehouse Ami
Fat Walda thicc
Roslin is the daughter of Walder and Bethany Rosby.
Two of her brothers were absent from the Red Wedding, because they were considered too honorable, and were never seen again. Overall, the Rosby Freys seem to be the nice ones of the bunch.
I supose she got her looks from the Rosby side, because Catelyn makes a comment when she meets her that the Rosbys are always gorgeous, but prone to illness. She also thinks Roslin looks pretty but will suffer immensely during childbirth, since she has very thin waistline that Catelyn describes as a Rosby feature.
@@edisonmichael6345 They weren't neccesarily too honerable, the other Freys just thought that they were loyal to Robb Stark, which is very plausible since one of them was Robbs squire despite being older than Robb and the other one accompanied Catelyn to Renly
Over all it seems that all the Rosby Freys seem to have wanted to grow some power of their own by being close to house Tully/Stark considering they are almost last in the line of succession
In the Feast of Crows , it is also mentioned that somebody is hiding and barricading the Rosby castle after the death of the last Rosby
Out two Rosby-Freys are both pretty good candidats
GRR Martin: Hmmmm, I need to make a character that will truly appear pathetic in the eyes of the viewers.
House Frey it is.
crazy how many times you can read the books and not know little walder was merrets son
Hes not the most pathetic , he just the most unlucky poor merett :'( #MakeMerettGreatAgain
Making someone “eat shit” means they made fun of him relentlessly. Not that they actually made him eat shit 😂😂😂😂
Why is Silvio Barbarigo from Assassin's Creed in ASOIAF?
Honourable Mentions:
Any other Frey (except cutie 3.14 married to Edmure Tully)
Edmure "Funeral pyre archer and unnecessary windmill procurer" Tully
Liza "I'll poison my husband for Baelish's Littlefinger but I'll never stop breastfeeding my son" Tully
Catelyn "I hate Jon Snow bc he's a motherless child and also I suck at hostage negotiations" Tully
So basically alm the tullys except for the blackfish and hoster
Basically, fuck the riverlands, they got what they deserved.
@@thebloodyhound9098 hoster is complete shit so add him too
R S L, c'mon man you can't give Edmure grief for fucking up the archery, he'd just lost his father and was overcome with grief and couldn't focus or keep still. The windmill on the other hand....
What about Olyvar and Perwyn Frey? Both brothers to Roslin who both did not took part in the red wedding same as Alessander Frey?
Pate from Dance didn't deserve that tho...☹
Who were attacking traveling highborns around twenty years before the start of the series
I think it's been hinted at in the encyclopedia that the king's wood people are the faith militant.
That’s not Merret Frey. That’s Silvio Barbarigo from Assassin’s Creed II.
The outlaw that gave merrett his headache was azor ahai
I hope so..
Ooh Lord i do hope that is the case.
I feel bad for Walda... Her death was completely unnecessary and she was a sweet person
Being sweet in Westeros only gets you killed faster.
she ain't dead (yet) in the books if i remember correctly.
The POV is Chett the guy who lost his spot serving maester aemon.
I never forget story about his doughter Amerei. She was cough fucking three grooms at the same time as a teen xd
I always wonder with stories like that if the girl was raped and then seen as a slut for that... maybe not but it’s always a thought I have with medieval style stories, seems possible
@@misspeaches1144 Those guys must been nuts if they tried to raped a highborn young lady. She was just horny all the time with a good body.
I would hit it
@@misspeaches1144 Possibly, yes. I think that is the case too, or could be the case.
@@4Sim0n4 Them trying to rape her is not a stretch, they have been nuts, though anyone trying to rape and kill are nuts. High born girls have been raped or almost raped before...
Am I dumb or did you use a picture of Rodrigo Borgia for Merrett?
The epilogue chapters are always among the most insightful.
Savage title but I can't say I disagree
who are attacking highborn travelers around 20 years before the start of the series...
"We could have had an alliance for half the price if you let the porkling put the spoon down every once in a while." Damn.
Much as I hate walder frey I have to admit that he's a absolute savage.
‘Gatehouse Amy’ got me WHEEZING 😂
I’m a troll. And i collect tolls. To cross this bridge costs a lot of dough! ( joe scruggs. Goo goo ga ga song )
where is that picture of the red wedding from? at 0:34
Walder Frey arrived late at the Trident, hes lucky he didn't lose part of his lands for the fucking gull. Darry at the very least had the balls to side with the Targaryens from start to finish.
A good example of how different styles and quality of armour can be the difference between "another fight" and "you're done".
Balon Greyjoy wants his title back
I never stopped to think about the prologue deaths, but you're right.
Love your videos man, you really deserve more subscribers for how in depth you go into ASOIAF
I hear the kingswood brotherhood were attacking traveling highborns about 20 years before the start of the series.
Could you do a video about the religions in Game of Thrones? It would be really interesting!!! Thank you very much for your work!
Pit Schmit I second this.
Bump
Whoa.... is Barney Gumble Nelson's.... father?!?!?
Snake was revealed to be Nelson's dad iirc. It's been years since I've seen the episode tho, so I might be remembering it wrong
Well done. Fan base professionalism
Please do more videos on the smaller characters of ASoIaF!
I wonder if "Lady Stoneheart" remembers that it was her and her son's fault for the Red Wedding.
Hmm...
How is it her fault, though? Catelyn didn't tell Robb to marry someone else. She tried to lessen the blow by marrying Edmure instead.
Can you do character stories.. Like from their birth to death or present time.... This would be awesome!
he makes theon look like jon
5:35 Aw, what a sweet boy
Merrett Frey is the POV character from Feast For Crows if I recall correctly, the character from A Storm Of Swords is one of the plotting Night Watch guys
Re: Marissa, if it's anything like the show could she have been found in violation of the laws of the Seven? Cutting her hair could have been part of her atonement walk.
justdrop I doubt it. I got the impression that she is fairly young.
@@0816M3RC That's cool. Honestly just spitballing.
Or possibly because of a high fever, to cool her off
if it was that I would assume that he would specifically complain about it, it sounds like something inocent that no one can be blamed for (lice, getting something sticky stuck in her hair, haveing a high fever, etc)
I don't know why, but I feel more empathy to miserable characters like Chett, Merret, Pate, etc.
Chett doesn't deserve sympathy, he's a Westerosi incel

eh merrett and pate yea cant say i really felt bad for chett he was just straight up malicious and vengeful had no redeeming quality or unfortunate circumstance that made me feel bad for him.

So, i was wondering who would take over house FREY since Walter has now died, i bet there will be some necks being cut over this!
The Red Funeral
What the hell is wrong with those squires ?
i only now realise the similarities between nelson and barney
Roy Dotrese reading that chapter was great
"Little Walder" is the big one, "Big Walder" is the little one.
Ah, irony.
Historically, shaving a persons head was a way to cool down the head when one was suffering from a fever.
Mia Moulop Really?
Imagine being Merritt frey and seeing this video about you.
Sadly I hate to say somehow I missed the epilouge. Thank you so much have to go back....
John Sheely it’s one of the coolest parts because it introduces Lady Stoneheart. Should definitely give it a read.
5:36 do not trust this smile
I think Pate from Oldtown would contest this.
Sounds like he has trigeminal neuralgia
