Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy are two of the greatest swords in history. Mandon Moore was pretty deadly and Jaime ranked him the second most dangerous after himself. The other 3 were adequate at best. Roberts kingsguard wasnt as terrible as people make out. Selmy and Jaime alone propel it to more than a paper shield
Robert's KG: "sure Little finger Mandon Moores cool. And Im keepin Barristan. Cersei ur bro can stay he can guard u at nite and u Lannisters can pick the other 4 members as well.
Kirk Cannon This is one inconsistency I found in the books. Tywin wanted to strip Jaime from his vows, and make him again the heir of Casterly Rock. I dont know why he didnt had this to his deal with Robert and Jon Arryn. You will marry Cersei and in exchange you will free Jaime from the kingsguard. Always seemed off to me.
Maybe having Jaime freed from the KG wasn't an option at the time. Tywin only had so much leverage. I believe the options at the time were pardon Jaime and let him stay, or make him take the black. I don't remember but maybe the best deal Tywin could muster was to have Jaime pardoned to avoid the Wall. Someone can correct me but I believe the prospect of releasing a KG from his vows wasn't an option until Joffrey kicked Selmy loose.
I guess throwing him out of the kingsguard would also dishonor jaime ... There would really not be an excuse for why he'd be thrown from the kingsguard apart from murdering his king - meaning a dishonorable discharge ... while Tywin might not care about honor that much, it could serve to mock his house which he surely doesn't like ... that said I don't know either. Then again it's not like Tywin back then was really in a position to make too many demands. He was scrambling to get on Roberts good side and get the marriage for cersei. Don't know if making another demand would have been justified despite not really having done much of the heavy liftig during the fight.
Something I wondered, why in the flashbacks Jaime has short hair? Given that throughout almost all his youth and adulthood he had long hair. Did Bran remember something wrong?
I first saw that scene online and thought it was just Jamie fantasising about doing it then with his hair now short. Didn’t realise that was meant to be a younger him. They could’ve just casted a younger version of Jamie for that scene like they got a younger version of Ned or put some wig that resembles his old hair.
4:00 proving that mad and stupid were equally appropriate adjectives here. Jaime was the only one allowed to bear a weapon the throne room (as the only KG in King's Landing) meaning his hostage and prisoner was the only person armed when Tywin attacked the city.
I feel like Balon Swann and Arys are underrated. Arys was a good knight, he was handsome, a good fighter and protected his princess as well as he could and is pretty honorable. Balon is a better fighter as is proven in the battle of the blackwater. also an honorable knight, and a decent archer.
yeah :D I think with aerys, balon, loras and jaime, there was a very short moment when the kingsguard was almost respectable again. Then jaime lost his hand, loras got injured, aerys died ...
Everything will be fine as long as Balon Swan keeps a mace close as well as a bow and arrows and just asks everyone to stay withing eyesight and about thirty yards away.
To me the lifetime service makes no sense. I mean we’re talking about a small, personal bodyguard unit that protects the King himself, supposedly made up of the greatest Knights in the whole kingdom. It makes no sense to never retire them. I mean it’s theoretically possible to have a 90 year old Kingsguard knight who’s long past his prime or not even capable as a realistic fighter. You’d think they would want to keep the most capable men in the Guard and therefore offer retirement and such to the members.
Well, it's to make sure they're loyal only to the king, and if they're old and past their prime, they can be strategists, and most of them would probably die in war or defending the king from assassins.
ikr. The Kingsguard of the Targaryen's were ALL legends. Some, of course, we better than others. but in the end, I wouldn't mind being taught by any of them because they're obviously the best knights of their time.
No he isn't? The Lannisters where not at the Trident. Jaime was with The Mad King, at Kings Landing and Tywin invaded Kings Landing as soon as he found out Robert defeated Rhaeger.

I can't believe the show just decided to exclude Arys Oakheart and all 3 Kettleblack brothers from the whole show, all 4 of them play some pretty but roles in the books. Oakheart escorts Myrcella to Dorne and dies when he is caught with the sand snakes and a couple other knights trying to sneak Myrcella out of Dorne to start a war to replace Tommen with Myrcella, where Myrcella is wounded but doesn't die (and certainly isn't poisoned) like the show. The Kettleblacks play a huge role in scheming with Cercei to frame Maergery by telling the High Sparrow that she has been sleeping with multiple people, but they also help to imprison Cercei because the Sparrows are whipping the Kettleblack brother (not sure if it's Osney, Osmund, or Osfryd) when Cercei walks in and he tells the Sparrows that he had been fucking Cercei so that's how she is imprisoned. She is actually still in prison in the books, she never got freed and certainly didn't destroy the Sept, plus the Sparrows are still in power. I know there are dozens of changes, but seeing Oakheart reminded me of him and the Kettleblacks.
Hey there! So this was seriously one of my favorite videos by you so far, because i've been curious about the old and current members of the Kingsguard. I just wonder if you could actually make a video about Ser Duncan the Tall? I haven't read the books yet so I am not sure how much details there are about him, but considering in the series that Joffrey comments on how there are 4 pages (in the Book of Brothers) detailing Ser Duncan's deeds as Kingsguard, perhaps you could cover him? I only mention this because, I really admired Ser Barristan "The Bad Ass" Selmy through the series, and I believe "the Bold" & his sense of duty to the Kingsguard was inspired by "The Tall", based on the stories and his own encounter at the Winter Tourney. Hopefully its possible, but otherwise, no worries!
Tywins small counsel; Tyrion, little finger, varys. The 4 brightest minds and schemers in all of Westeros the same room. Doesnt get much better than that
Aerys had The White Bull, Barristan the Bold, Prince Lewyn, The Sword of the Morning, and Jaime (who Barristan admits is the best natural swordsman he ever saw) and he still managed to eff it up.
The 7 vs 3 fight at the Tower of Joy is even more impressive if you know the law of squares, which is that the force of any group is roughly the square of their numbers. So 49 vs 9 if the fighters were equal. The fact that there were only 2 survivors of the 7 translates to the Kingsguard members having--on average--5 times the ability of the 7.

Robert should’ve expelled Jamie from the kingsguard. Maybe it wouldn’t have been enough to stop Tywins lust for power but you have a good excuse in that he killed the last king he was sworn to protect and Robert giving Tywin a secure line probably wouldve won him over as a more permanent ally
I know right. It seems so inconsistent to me that Tywin didn't even try to have Jaime removed of the kingsguard so he could become his heir again (we all know he was really pissed about Jaime joining the kg). Cersei marrying Robert was more than enough to solidify the alliance between Baratheon and Lannister.
@@tronalddump1133 Yeah, what was even Tywin's heir strategy? Tyrion? Kevan? Lancel? They all seem pretty silly, right? Jaime was in tbe Kingsguard for years, maybe decades. Tywin should have had a strategy for that, right?

Ser Duncan the Tall was a Kingsguard knight during Maekar I, Egg's father. When Egg ascended the throne as Aegon V, he appointed Ser Duncan as the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard, being the former Lord Commander dying in his sleep.
@@Sc4recrow44 Your about a century out regarding plate. You might be confusing 13th (1200's) century with 1300's (14th century)... 1200's - Beginning, everyone pretty much just wearing mail, sometimes would find arm and leg protection made of strips of metal. About half way through the century you started getting the "coat of plates" on top of mail. By the end of the century, most knights would be using this. Many characters can be seen wearing a coat of plates (or something like it) in the show, it's what the mountain wears. 1300's - well, about 1350 really, you started getting single piece breastplates, and either coat of plates covering the back or often just mail. Arms and legs gained more plate protection but were rarely fully enclosed (armour always focused on frontal protection first). Also in this century, the bascinet takes over all helmets for all knights (its the sugar-loaf shaped one, usually with a pointy visor). By the end of the century, you get the faulds, the metal skirt thing that really only works with a full, rigid breastplate and backplate. This is also when jousting took off, now people are well enough armoured not to regularly die whilst competing. 1400's - (early) covered more of the body in plate, getting rid of the gaps that use to just be mail, better articulated joints etc. Started seeing single-piece back plates as well as front plates. 1450 - This is where game of thrones is supposedly meant to be set (war of the roses, so 1455-1487). References to things like "lobstered steel" (presumably referring to segmented joints) and "gorgets" reinforce this. So same trends, better protected joints. Stronger/integrated neck protection. 2 new helmets: Armets pretty much exclusively for the knights and sallets for any one. Also more specialization, eg asymmetric armour for fighting from horseback. In response to the OP, yes and no. George RR Martin could have done with reading a few books on historical armour before writing a story full of it. The knights are usually alright in the books, the exception being his obsession with scaled armour, which is historically wrong. The other armour he loves talking about is mail and (boiled?) leather, which again was never really that popular. Given the descriptions of some of the armour being very complex, putting the period mid-15th century, I'm really surprised brigandines are never (to my knowledge) mentioned, though from the outside, they are covered in leather, so maybe that's what was meant? Overall, I do tend to take his armour descriptions with a very large pinch of salt as I think it was Areys Oakheart in Dorne, was pierced by a crossbow bolt that went through his oak shield and then through a plate breastplate (and presumably layers of padding and possibly mail underneath)... Considering they were built to stop a couched lance, I highly doubt that.

rahliE05 he and Tywin were going for broke; thus the whole we can establish a dynasty or collapse into extinction, so be a great warlord. He likely would have been dismissed had Robert come back from the hunt. That boar saved Cersei and Jaime and Tywin's asses.
The Kingslayer Robert knew of Jaime leaving though, remember before he went on the hunt Ned Stark was begging Robert to allow him to leave and bring Jaime back to justice.. It just doesn’t make sense in the story how they allow Jaime to “come and go” in the King’s Guard when “death is the only way to be relieved of their duties”.. Also, remember Cersei was just as responsible for Roberts death as that boar was
Its because the Lannisters were in power that he was able to get away with everything he did. Ned couldn't do anything cause Robert wouldn't let him and robert wouldn't let ned do anything or do anything himself because Cersei was his wife and didn't wanna damage relations with the lannisters either. Especially cause they were funding the kingdom so much.
And after Robert dies the lannisters took over and jaime has a free pass to do anything basically. He pretty much leave the kingsguard and is done with Cersei in the books though after joffrey's death and when he goes north to take riverrun back he's not really a kingsguard anymore and he's not in love with Cersei either. He leaves with brienne who is leading him to lady stoneheart and it ends there. We're waiting for the next book to find out what comes next.

As far as loyalty goes, The loyal KG are all dead.
Barristan is still alive in the books.
as is Balon Swan
Nerds Forever Balon is as good as dead. Why? Cause Darkstar will kill him. I would be surprised if Balon was the prologue POV. Darkstar is going to use Dawn and prove that Arthur was no one without that sword.
I could see that happening. I am convinced that Darkstar is going down to someone in White

The Hound would still put up a good fight
The hound would beat him if all the other kings guard act as meat shields…
Ugh, of course everyone thinks of Arthur Dayne as a dual-wielding Hollywood "badass" when he only used the greatsword, Dawn in the books.
One of those swords was Dawn. To be fair, I loved the dual weilding. No one else uses it in the show.
John Tyler Brienne does a bit, when Jaime is her prisoner
The reason he dualwields in the show is because it was much easier to choreograph than with him uisibg a greatsword.
John Tyler it would be rather difficult to duel wield swords in real life.
@@John-doe955 depends on the type of sword and if the practitioner had practice/experience with that skill. In the got world I don't see anyone really dual wielding as an effective combat skill or commonplace. I suppose they made Dane a dual wielder to show off his skill (lore wise)
It muat be noted the mad kings kings guard were the most noble of any tragedian king. He had a Martell, a Lannister, a Hightower, Selmy, a Dorry, a Whent and a Dane of starfall. Everyone coming from a noble, ancient and honorary house through out the realm. Previous Targaryen kings had Bastards, House hold nights and even sell swords, but Ares had it as good as it got.
thats cap Targaryen kings always had noble kingsguard in fact greatest kingsguards were kingsguard of Jahaerys Targaryen not Aerys's
I really thought Joffrey was going to cry when Sandor said that to him.
I think maybe what inspired "7" KGuards was, to get THE best knights one from each of the kingdoms... just a thought, since Aegon the conqueror only accepted/adopted the Faith of the Seven as a diplomatic move..
And yet i’ve never heard of a Kingsguard from the North or the iron islands
If Joffrey was smart he would've kept Berristan Selmy and Jaime on his kingsguard while adding the Clegane brothers, Ilyn Payne, Loras Tyrell, and Meryn Trant or Mandon Moore. That would've been a solid kingsguard.
He would've had a dream Team. The only one he'd be missing would be Dayne.

Kingsguard under the Mad King: "Gods I was strong then"
Ser Arthur Dayne has got to be one of the coolest characters I've come across
S K no one is as cool as the bloodraven period.
Why? Books or show practically nothing is know about him. He has about 3 lines of dialogue. Is it just because he carries a great big sword and everyone admires him?
Not really. Just a giu good with a particular sword. Dawn ios cool. Arthur is just there
@@supremeworld87 You get enough second-hand characterization to understand that this guy is kingshit of fuck-mountain. He doesn't need a fucking POV chapter to get this point across. Jaime Lannister and Barristan Selmy are two of the greatest swords in history. Mandon Moore was pretty deadly and Jaime ranked him the second most dangerous after himself. Very accurate and neat presented.
What if Robert dismissed Jaime right when he ascended to the throne? I mean, Jaime would have no time to get it on with Cersei
And Tywin would approve
Kirk Cannon This is one inconsistency I found in the books. Tywin wanted to strip Jaime from his vows, and make him again the heir of Casterly Rock. I dont know why he didnt had this to his deal with Robert and Jon Arryn. You will marry Cersei and in exchange you will free Jaime from the kingsguard. Always seemed off to me.
Because it messes with plotline lol
I thought being in the Kingsguard was for life?

I don't think it's often that a man of that world to live to 90

@@irrelevant1242 And that is considered to be incredibly impressive. A kingsguard isn't likely to live that long (although I suppose it could happen).
Well, it's to make sure they're loyal only to the king, and if they're old and past their prime, they can be strategists, and most of them would probably die in war or defending the king from assassins.

In the books Jaime is the commander of the Lannister army on the trident, against the Tullys. That could have been something more to say about Jaime
No he isn't? The Lannisters where not at the Trident. Jaime was with The Mad King, at Kings Landing and Tywin invaded Kings Landing as soon as he found out Robert defeated Rhaeger.
Alex R He meant during the War of the 5 Kings, not during Roberts Rebellion.

Hilariously overuse of statistics. Now imagine if any of them had the sense to use some type of bow and defensive tactics.

Whats with Ser Duncan the Tall?
Wasn't he a friend and even Knight for Aegon aka Egg when he was young?
i think he even was lord commander of the kingsguard but under the predecessor of Aerys II
Ser Duncan died in the fire at Summerhall which happened before the mad king reigned. He is a great character, just outside the timeline here.

The armour in the TV show looks like it’s from the 13 and 14 hundreds. I was wondering if it was different in the book.
I always visioned it as a armor from the earlier middle ages since there's many people using mail and leather in the books.
