How I Make A Tumbling Bowl or Dish Wood Turning

  • How I glue up and turn a tumbling bowl or platter..
    This is a Stair Step Illusion Effect
    This is a good exercise in making very accurate cuts. I find it very rewarding.
    Once glued up your blank can be made into what ever shape you wish.
    This one is a small bowl or dish. To make a deeper bowl you would just start with thicker pieces.
    I use glue jigs I made a few years ago but it can be done without them. Once you have one row glued up it can become a fixture for gluing the rest.
    This turning is 7" diameter and 1" tall.

    Term for this is Trompe l'oeil. French for trick the eye. Used a lot in architecture to give a depth of vision illusion. WELL DONE!

    Hi Gary, thank you for the detailed overview of how you made this stunning piece. Following your instructions provided in this video I was able to make my first one of these too. Only required two small adjustments to two of the 19 hexagons that formed my shallow 7.5" diameter bowl. I did not have any beech so instead I used white ash and the contrast worked well. Thanks again and keep the great videos coming!! Cheers, Ted

    Thanks for the video! When you cut those pieces I just about choked - great idea! I just finished my first tumbling bowl and it didn't come out so well - I had tilted my saw blade at 60 degrees (or so I thought) and used my miter gauge to cut my pieces. The subsequent glue-up obviously was not what it should have been. Had I thought to use my wedgie sled like you did the outcome most likely would have been a lot better! Will for sure use the wedgie sled for bowl #2. Thanks!!!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Jim. You will like using the wedgie sled for this. I have lots of sleds for doing other things. One is for making a dodecahedron.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Bruce in a few of my other videos I show the glue jigs and how they work.
      There are a few ways it can be made. I did mine on my CNC milling machine but they could be done on a table saw. I have shared drawings of them.
      The jigs need to be made to match the finished blocks. After that the blocks have to be made to match the glue jig if you plan on gluing them in strips.

      The strips were .870 wide and I think 1" thick. But they could be any thickness.

    • @ThePapa1947

      I am I just checked and it looks like I used brown paper and Titebond between the tenon and the turning but I would not hesitate at all to use hot glue on this one. I have done pieces that weigh 4 or 5 times more and used a hot glued tenon.

      @@dangingerich8628 I will see what I can come up with. I will say that it is best to make the glue fixture first and then adjust the size of the tumbling block so they fit.
      Having a CNC machine does make it much easier for me. But I believe I have a way to make the glue fixture very accurate using a sled on a table saw. When I get it I can have it setup for just those intersected to watch it.
      I will let you know when I have it done but it will be a matter of weeks.

    Could you have done this as I have seen you do other deeper bowls by cutting rings out of the blank and stacking them? Would the pattern still work?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure it would work. Extra careful line up will be in order because of all the joints. And the pattern will be a bit distorted but could still look good.

      The width of the strips were .897. The height can be whatever you want. The taller the deeper turning you can make. Is this what you are asking?
      I not I can give you other dimensions.

    My t my three pieces do not together are you sure it is 30 degrees

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on how you read the angle. You can measure it as 60 or 30. So the way you are checking it you would want to use 60 degrees. I have always measured the angle off of 90. So I think of tilting the blade 30 degrees. This stems from how I made things at work and the tools I measured them with.
      So I would say you are doing it measure it as 60 and you will be fine.
      Sorry about that but I spend many years doing it the other way.
      Let me know how it goes.

      @@ThePapa1947 Gary, I truly appreciate your response and guidance. I made different sleds with various degrees because I am making segmented bowls. I bought the wedges with the different degrees . I used the 30 degree sled with a fixed fence for cutting. My wood slips are walnut, maple, and cherry and they are one inch square. I cut the pieces just like you do in the video and the length of the angle side is the same as the length side. Each piece looks like a perfect diamond shape but when I put the three together, I have a gap between two pieces. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong. I appreciate your insight. Thanks, John von

      @@ThePapa1947 Gary, I sincerely appreciate your consideration and support. I finally discovered my mistake. When I measured the length of the piece, I held the strip of wood perpendicular to the stop block instead of keeping the piece at an angle. So the length was a little longer than the width of the angle. I would like to see your drawing (johnvone@bellsouth.net). More important, thanks again for your kindness and guidance. John von

    What are the dimensions of the wood?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you asking about each parallelogram? If are you just have to make all the sides the same length and then it will make a tumbling block.

      Greetings from Alabama. Yeah it's the crazy person who asked about the cutting dimensions on the pieces for this bowl. I just enjoy life. Anyway, I finally figured out how to cut the pieces, however, I have a gap left, but I will figure it out. The gap is located between the two long edge pieces, probably just my saw, or how I held the wood while cutting it
      Thanks for your patience with me
      Ot takes me awhile, but I will eventually figure it out. Have a blessed evening and day tomorrow.
