    When a meteor hits a chessboard exactly on squares d4 ... d5 ... e4 ... e5 ...
    And now seriously, well done for the brilliant idea, the perfect execution.

    Perfect!! Gary, anyone who did not see this video would think you made it from a board at least 3 inches thick. 👏👏 Another fantastic job from your workshop, my friend. Thank you so much for the shout out. I really appreciate it, buddy! Keep having fun in your shop! 😁😎😁
    Happy turning,

      Thank you Gord! It was lots of fun to do and I have been having a great time in the shop. But today I got this crazy idea of moving one of my work benches and started clearing things out. Then I decided it may not be such a great idea so not I have things all over the place. Dang! LOL

    If somebody else made this bowl I'd be surprised. But seeing how that you did it I'm not. You have impressed me from the beginning and I have learned to realize when your video comes up, it takes priority of all other turners, next to Ogle. I love both you guys turnings.

    Another very original idea. I suppose with every next project You impress yourself, Gary 👌 Lots of advices from You are priceless. First time I have heard about this tip with denaturated alcohol to remove hot glue. I need to check this one and this with slow and gentle cutting off the rings with parting tool. I will test it at first and if I will make it it will help me with my project on which I'm working now.
    Great work You have made on this bowl and I can't to wait next ideas 👍
    Have a wonderful weekend, Brother 💪
    Rav

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Rav, I have to admit this ended up looking better than I was expecting. I used to try and cut the hot glue off with a parting tool but it would just gum up. This really does a fine job.
      For sure if you listed to the sound of the cut you will know you are probably less than 1/16 inch from cutting through. Sharpen up and little pressure.
      Take care brother and looking forward to your next video.

    It doesn't LOOK complicated, Gary, but just to conceive of such a way to make the bowl while maintaining the integrity of the individual square shapes makes you a genius! Very well explained and demonstrated. You make it look easy and since you've done all the work, it will be easy for anyone that follows your guidance. Very nice, elegant piece, professor! Keep'em coming, buddy! 😊

      Thank you Phil and you are right. It is a pretty simple one to do. I have been wanting to do it but was just not sure how it was going to look. I almost wanted to leave it a flat board and call it done LOL.
      But the more I looked at it I will have to use your word and say it does look a little elegant. That was fun to say because I am 180 degrees from being elegant myself.

    Great choice of woods for this piece Gary, love the sharp contrasts. Always enjoy your segmented turnings, there is SO much thought goes into them, eg, I don't want to lose the effect of the squares so I will only go two thicknesses deep. Desired result achieved, as always. The finish you achieved on this piece is superb mate making for a fabulous result, such a pleasure to watch. Cheers, don from South Aust.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Donald. I did a lot of thinking on how deep to make this and happy I decided to keep it fairly flat. Perhaps I will do another and see how it looks much deeper. But I know the squares with get a bit oblong looking. Same as a tumbling block bowl does.

    Hi Gary in answer to your question it was the large chuck Longworth i think is the type

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bruce I made the longworth chuck. I have a CNC milling machine so it made it easy. You can do it with a router and there are lots of plans out there showing you how to lay it out and make it. I do see a number of them already made on places like Etsy for a decent price if you do not want to make it yourself. And the cost I see is not much more than buying the material and making you own.
      Hope that helps.

    That is very cool. Reminds me of the cover to the first edition of Keith Laumer’s “The Glory Game” that I read years ago. The cover had a checkered board with a finger poking in and the board poking out elsewhere. I can’t post a link, but an image search should let people see what I mean. This gives the same impression.

    I recognized your cutting and gluing technique as I have used the same procedure making cutting boards. If you rotate the final strips 90 degrees so the end grain is up in the final gluing you can make a knife friendly cutting board although it would present some problems as a wood turning. I do enjoy your videos.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Bob, I have thought about making cutting boards myself and for sure they need to be end grain. I make tumbling block bowls and they would look great as cutting boards. I may have to do that one of thee days.

    Hi Gary,
    Very nice piece! It looks like an optical illusion from some angles!
    This video came at a good time for me as I'm attempting to make a checker board and checkers. The checker board is pretty much straight foreword but I haven't figured out how I'm going to make the small 7/8" diameter checkers yet. I want them to have a little "texture on the edges! I always have one part of a project that sends me for a loop! LOL
    Thanks for the video,,,
    Tom

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Tom and I liked the look so much as a flat board I was tempted not to turn it.
      As far as checkers I had thought about that as well. You could turn a spindle and setup a router to cut texture along the length. If you have an indexer on the lathe pick how many groves you want. Then part the checkers off and sand them up. Just a thought.
      Take care,
      Gary

      @@ThePapa1947 I'll jump in here on this one, Gary. I'd like to see your description for making that big Longworth chuck. I've thought about making a Cole Jaw chuck, but I've seen more and more uses for the Longworth. By the way, I began my teaching career by teaching junior high (8th/9th grade) Industrial Arts (LOVED it--and was even named IA Teacher of the Year back in 1976), then had a stint as middle school Principal, and then was recruited to teach at MS State University--so I've taught lots of teachers how to teach; thus, I am wanting to tell you that I absolutely LOVE your thorough, gentle, direct teaching method. Although I've been subscribed only a month or so, I'll be around a long time. I'm 72 years young now, so I plan to make lots of wood chips between now and the day I check out of this Earth.
