This Saturday I'm going to look at a lathe a friend has. He said I could use it. I haven't turned anything in almost 50 years, but have been watching your videos and am inspired to try again. Thank you. Your teaching/demonstrations are wonderful. I taught 42 years myself, so I know good teaching when I see and hear it. Amy Gillett

I was the same way. Before I picked up the hobby, I watched just about every video that Phil had posted. But a good friend that turns kept bugging me and I just happen to run across a good deal on a lathe. After the first piece the addiction was there. Couldn't wait to to finish so I could start another. Lol. I'm at the point now, where I will start another one while one is still in the chuck drying. That's how bad I can't wait to start another one. Love seeing those ribbons flying.

Totally stunning piece, Phil, this particular piece of wood had your name on it, long before you ever signed it, thanks to Tuffy Marginez. It is surely one of your best pieces yet, worth waiting in storage and contemplation for 3 years to find its final glory, in your hands, of being a beautiful piece of art sculpture. I love it! Thank you so much, Phil, for sharing your beautiful gift in uniquely communicating with the nature of wood, for us all to enjoy. Take good care and have a great week.💛🫂☺️

No doubt about it Phil I love that bowl. There is so much life left in it even after turning what you did. And that just added to it by showing all that beautiful grain.
The hot glue held up great and for sure it has a place in my turning.
As always great vision in seeing what is hidden in the piece. I just finished one I have to call The I Don't Know Bowl. I sure was not sure what I was going to get. But it does have some very nice bark and lots of holes.
    Great work my friend,

Thank You Phil...What FUN! Phil I remember now. That was the secondary side piece from the very first piece I ever sent you over 3 years ago, WOW!. Secondary because of the hole. Gee, I do not remember doing that center circle thing, that balancing ring at all. Modesto Ash is correct. I identified the wood with my local nursery lady. That stump was along the road for a looong time until I came along. You did it justice and made a wonderful piece from wood that probably would have been passed over by other turners. GREAT WORK PHIL, until next time....TM

@@valeriehenschel1590 Hi Valerie- Well Valerie YOU are the reason "we" all started sending wood to Phil. You were the 1st way back when? I love the adventure of finding "Phil Wood", cutting it up & sending it off (kind of like a message in a bottle floating up to Phil). I never know if or what is going to happen. So much FUN for me and Phil seems to have LOTS of fun turning so as Phil says "It's all good". Thank you Valerie!!...TM

@tuffy Martinez Don’t blame me! 😁🤪 When Phil referred to a round of plain walnut as “his good wood” I suspected he was short of pieces to choose from. Another awesome piece there Phil. Love watching your videos to see what you will bring alive and to hear what you have to say. I watch and listen to the whole video , with you stopping and talking makes it more interesting. Some videos on TH-cam I start watching to see what the piece of wood looks like and then fast forward to the end to see what it turned out like. With them not talking or explaining what they are doing it’s not as interesting as your videos. Thanks again Phil for teaching me many tips and trips in wood turning, also teaching me to look at pieces of wood that I wouldn’t look at for turning but makes such beautiful pieces. From your student Todd in Newfoundland keep doing what you love for us to enjoy and learn. 👍

Very nice. I find it interesting that some folks complain that glue blocks don’t hold. Here you’ve proved that they do. Even when you can’t get a complete circle of glue around it there is plenty of holding power. Well done, again, Phil. Beautiful work.

  • @jayscott306
    @jayscott306 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Excellent results in filling that void, Phil. A lovely, interesting, impressive piece. I want to say imposing, but not in a bad way. The bark did come alive with finish.
I'm still not ready to trust hot glue. Not because it doesn't work well when done right. But because I don't think I'd be fast enough to get the pieces together while it's still hot enough. Regarding temperature and hot glue, I learned a lesson. One of my first projects was a shifter knob for my vehicle, the nut inside secured with hot glue. The thing was great, until it spent a night outside at -30. The nut came loose and I had a ridiculous time getting it unthreaded, so I could put the original back on. From that lesson, I've learned that a few minutes in the freezer, or outside in winter, can let that hot glue peel right off. An alternative if getting isopropyl on your bowl isn't the best option.
    Great video, Phil.

  • @tomjpt

OK Phil - I vote YES! Beautiful. I like the multiple ways it can be displayed because the viewer can see inside where there is so much beauty. Now, about that dust collection system. Oh Phil, up here in Maine we call that "dry humah". I was laughing out loud for that whole bit.
AND, some of your teaching has stuck! No, I haven't made my first successful "Phil-Style" bowl but I'm practicing. On this piece I am so pleased to say I was able to see the bowl in the raw piece of wood. For me, that's major progress. So, don't give up turning for a new career as a stand up comic but keep sliding those bits in. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

If you glance at Sprague Woodturning, you will see a small electric fry pan with a pool of melted hot glue, and he dips his glue waste blocks in that and slaps the block on the back of the piece. To part it he uses one of the tools and parts it off on the lathe. Just some ideas. Love to spend time with you, Phil. Thanks for the beauty.

To be honest, I didn't think it wouldn't go well this time but there I got it.
But one thing is certain, your work will always be wonderful. I have never seen anything boring made by you. I wish I could give you more , 👍, it's just to say thank you for the show.
    ❤ Carsten

It’s beautiful, Phil. Jim sprague mounts all his bowls using hot glue. He heats up several sticks in a shallow electric oven. 🌞
