Bad genes started the operations to remove 8 body parts, so far. From the ages of 4 to 57 I developed over 20 conditions and have been in the hospital so many times I can't count but a guess would be over a hundred. Three and a half years ago I started getting a burning prickly feeling on my left knee. No one knew what to do about it or what it was. Every month I would find a new doctor or nurse practitioner who would eventually scratch their heads and tell me they had no idea what was wrong. Over two years of not knowing really wore on my nerves and the condition spread unilaterally and new symptoms developed. A year ago I got a diagnosis and it was really a blow to my life.
I have Erythromelalgia. This is an inflammation of the veins, collateral and capillaries. Since the first symptom on my left knee it has spread to wrists, elbows, both knees, feet, palms, inside thighs and facial cheeks. It is irritated by temperature change, movement, stress, illness, emotions, sunlight and and having anything touching my skin. There are 7 things suggested to try to handle the pain but I went to a few doctors once diagnosed and offered myself up as a test subject. They put seven inch stents in both legs and a spinal block, both made it worse.
There is no cure.
The symptoms:
Unilateral flushing *redness as if an allergic reaction*
The feeling as if a cactus is being rolled on bare skin
Burning as if I have a sunburn and hot coffee is being poured on it.
Petechiae, which isn't painful but it makes people stare at me when I do go out which is only to see doctors.
When a new area starts you don't see the red but it gets hot enough to dry a wet paper towel within minutes.
Any temperature over 67 makes it continuous instead of my being able to bring it down with fans, water, numbing lotion and dozens of quackery tricks.
I am one of 71 people in the US that has being given this diagnosis. The diagnosis was hard won because of its rarity but also it starts at birth for most.

The first half of the th-cam.com/users/postUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

Almost 3 years later and 5 million views!! Thank you all so much again. I really owe alot to this one project and video. It sort of was the kickstarter for my woodworking
career. To give some insights, i was just turning for around 3 months at the time that i was shooting this video. I learned from watching other youtuber's and their techniques like Mike Waldt, Carl Jacobson, Brendan stemp. At the time i was making some 3d cutting boards with the pattern, and it seemed almost like a logical next step to try to and make a thicker blank and to try to make a bowl with that. I didn't really had an idea of what it should look like, and i'm still not sure how it evolved into this shape. Although the video is relaxing ( as many people say), I was quite tense, since i barely knew how to hold my tools correctly, and was afraid of a violent 'catch' ( happends when your tool is presented to your work at the wrong angle ). Now, 3 years later i know alot more, of how to approach a woodturning project, and techniques. The process of making the tumbling bowl, has also become alot more material efficient.
Thomas Anton Geurts What is the name of the pattern you created with the checkered effect. I would love to practice creating a similar pattern for a table but I don't know where to start with dimensions for the diamonds

I am astonished at the skill you displayed after only three months of experience. That sort of explains the variety of tools you used both on the inside and the outside of the bowl, but the product is wonderful. One question. In between coats of the danish oil you sanded with sandpaper. What grit was that? Most of my colleagues who finish with oil use very fine steel wool in between coats.

Very beautiful! I've turned 1 bowl in my life many years ago in high school.
I still use it today.
Makes me want to get a lathe.
I made many bowls and various other projects in shop classes in high school...the very sad thing is the peeps running our schools have removed almost all shop classes over the last 20 years. No home economics, no metal, wood or auto shop any more...the only consultation is you may be able to buy a used school woodshop lathe online...I see them all the time...good luck and I am actually going to start turning again myself...

Truly a sad state of affairs that the trades classes have been dropped from the curriculum.
My bro took auto shop and metal shop and i took wood shop and building trades. I just heard from a friend that another mutual friend has recently bought and moved into the house my class built our senior year.
My brother has made a carrer as a machinist and we've done almost all the auto repair needed on our cars over these many years. My two sons had no such opportunities given them in school.
Todays school has more important classes on lesbian dance theory
And Mongolian basket weaving.
Strange days indeed.
Hope you are weathering this global shitstorm well.
Maybe this lack of manufacturing in the USA will be a good reason to incentivize their return.

Beautiful. Craftsmanship. That's quite a workshop. No wonder they are $600. My grandfather used to make similar articles in his garden shed with bits of scrap hardwood. He had a wooden bench and wood-screw vice that he made himself. Many of his tools were handmade, including his planes [from old chisels and lumps of wood. His lathe was hand turned till he fitted an electric motor to it. Not sure what happened to the dozens of items he made. Probably dumped in a house clearance. I still have some of his tools. They are my link to a generation that knew how to make things.
As long as that bowl is kept dry, and maintained it will last way longer than any of us watching this! Such craftsmanship is rare and great to watch!!!!

I got obsessed with turning bowls in shop class in highschool. my teacher saw how interested I was and all he requested from me was more bowls. Wood turning is a true art and you become heavily involved with the project you are working on. Great video, beautiful peice. I know how much work truly went into something like this. awesome job!

My father was also a carpenter a long time ago, and I had such jugs and platters at home, but they never came up with the idea of bonding wood and resin, and what you do is simply DELICIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

Amazing optical illusion! It's a brain teaser to imagine running my hands over the surface expecting to feel stair steps of sorts, and it's all smooth! Very relaxing video too, thank you kindly, Thomas.

I was scrolling through the first few comments from years ago, looking for one like yours. Yep. It’s a brain-teaser alright. This illusion just boggles the human brain as our eyes lie to us. I know that bowl is round inside, but we see square blocks with sharp corners instead.
With most optical illusions like this it helps to turn away, think, and look again. That trick didn’t work for me this time. The illusion overpowers all logic. Maybe I like being fooled in this way? It makes life interesting.
I’ve seen lots of 3D looking woodwork before, like cutting boards and such, but this bowl is by far my favorite. Cutting boards are flat and square so we can see through the illusion. But this incredible craftsman took that same 3D effect and made it round. With no plane as a reference point, the human brain can’t put reality into visual perspective. I love that. It’s one of those things you really want to touch to make sure you’re not insane.
What a beautiful piece of work and a mind-f*ck that’s just memorizing.
Just had to watch it again. The great Jazz music at certain points really brings you into the relaxing mood.

I like making cutting boards and have always wondered what it would look like if it were turned into a bowl. I don't have a lathe, but I am going to get one soon I hope. Thomas I trust your judgement on Wood burning Question I want to Flame Treat some Maple wooden Baseball Bats for my Grandsons, But some are telling me that Maple wood can not be Flame treated, I would like your take on that.? Thanks for sharing love watching all of your flame work etc.
It's been a year, so you may have found your answer by now... but since nobody replied to your question...
You can flame treat maple, but you just won't get a shard grain contrast like you do with Ash.
Flame treated maple will have a more uniform & blended coloring.

Ola não achei tão difícil eu fiz um só para fazer o teste o grau de corte das peças simplesmente é feito em 60° so tem que prestar atenção na hora da montagem das peças quem faz marchetaria tri dimensional em foleados é mole só achei difícil para tornear a parte externa tive que fazer um formão de lamina de serra de serrar barras de ferro

Well I guess I’m behind the curve here seeing this incredible piece of mind-screwing illusional craftsmanship is at least six years old.
I’m a lifelong woodworker, carpenter, craftsman, and the only piece of work that barely compares to this is a 3D chess board I made years ago. (No comparison at all) This optical illusion that started out as squared and then rounded out on a lathe, is just incredible.
I don’t think I’ve seen a piece of woodwork combined with magic, that made me smile more and wonder.
I understand the difference shades of wood making shadows and individual blocks, but I didn’t expect to be so fooled by the illusion in the bowl. What an incredibly wonderful thing to watch being created, and an almost frightening resulting illusion at the completion.
