I was that guy for the first few years after coming out to my friends. I was the secret boyfriend. It’s really scary to come out to your parents and work friends when you know they are not accepting, and my entire dad’s side of the family is not accepting. I knows it’s frustrating for the other guy, but everyone comes out on their own time and their own way. Andrew, you are so lucky to have a group of friends that was gay friendly in high school.

This is a generational comment. You have no clue how the internet has changed the public perception of what being gay means, or how the public perceives via the media surrounding the issue,, is bound to impact how we perceive ourselves, especially young gays. This is a story of young gay romance, young gay love. Its sweet. Its innocent. Its full of romance. It is NOT a story of gay lust or gay sex or a series of one night stands, and shame . In short, there was nowhere where an adolescent gay boy in my day, could ever read or hear a story like this if you lived in a small town, and no one to share such a story with. These healthy innocent portrayals of new gay love simply had no place to get to the blossoming gay market for publication, because that market was distributed in gay bathhouses, gay porn-shops and gay bars. You have no idea how great it is that these stories are reaching the isolated lonely young people who need to get them.

You’re so cute. I had a straight friend in high school who knew I was gay. He was not interested in me sexually of course, but also unwilling to stop encouraging me and flirting with me, it was hard to deal with for me. I had the worst crush. I think he enjoyed the idea of me having a crush on him.... eventually I had to walk away from the friendship because all I thought of was him. It wasn’t healthy for me. Years later we connected again and I had a long time boyfriend..... (we are married now) ...anyway, my friend came to on vacation in Hawaii to visit me. He was engaged to the girl he is married to now. ... it felt to me that he was sad I found someone and his energy was strange. He told me he wished he was gay because he loved me. That comment made me both happy and sad. I was in Hawaii and he stayed in our hometown in California.... so our contact was minimal. We speak very little now but I still wonder “what if”. He has 4 kids now. I’m in a relationship with a guy I’ve been with 29 years. I’m fortunate to have found love....but that first crush will always be with me. By the way, I’m probably 30 years older than you, but I’ve got a little internet crush on you. Thanks for making me feel young again.
I think some people find love connections with those they’re not interested in sexually sometimes. My forbidden love wanted me to tell him I loved him and he replied with I’m the only guy he’s ever loved and had intense feelings for but it wasn’t the lifestyle he saw for himself. I guess I’m headed the same route like the end to your story. He’s married with a woman and about to have kids and my partner and I are about to about to adopt our boys from foster care. That first love is always etched and I’m grateful for it.

Hitting too close to home! Me and my last ex have almost the same story. Our “dates” would just be us hanging out in the car. we had so many car make out moments and we would go to the drive in all the time. It was fun. It started feeling old cause he would always be on the lookout for people he knew. He would want us to act like friends when we weren’t in the car. I kinda became more distant from him as I was realized I wanted something different.

I can relate so much to your story. We both used to finish work at midnight and go driving until sunrise. Two magical nights I remember having naughty fun: in the middle of a main road at 2am (had to run into the bushes a couple of times when we saw headlights in the distance), and out on a cliff top after midnight in pouring rain with lightning all around. Good memories!

Are people better off figuring things out as you did, rather than moving to a big city as young adult and letting it out all at once? Is this or that a necessary means of figuring yourself out as an LGBT person? And are the answers heavily dependent on the individual?

My parents do know about my last two relationships, including my current fiancé, and they found out when I bought an apartment and was moving in with my previous boyfriend. Now they are ok with this, but it was not good at the beginning, especially with my mom. Thing is they've meet most of the guys I was seeing (maybe they've figured out by now they were more than friends) and before they knew they had no issue with them, but when they've found out my boyfriend at the time became like "he who shall not be named" (literally my mom would only sometimes referred him, and only as HE with emphasis)...

Had a similar experience....granted this was 1989 and I was only 18, and had just obtained my Real Estate license so I was the youngest Realtor in the state of Missouri at this time. So of coarse, I had the key to any vacant house that was listed for sale. Brent...oh Brent. He was my first love. Same age as me but being OUT was still taboo! We did our whole dating undercover thing and it was amazing. He and I both eventually realized that there was a whole other world out there and we stopped “dating”, but remain friends to this day. Your story reminds me of the the evenings looking at the stars and wishing it would never end. Such good memories that I cherish and that have made me who I am today. Good story my friend! I'm a month late to reply but I just found your channel so that's my excuse. Lol! Anyways here is my forbidden love story. When I was 14, (25 now) I had two best friends and one was giving subtle hints at having feelings but I was young and unsure. One of my friends unexpectedly, held my hand on my first terrifying roller coaster, and I held it back. We held hands a lot during rides that day lol. This is where the journey began. We had this hidden romance going on till age 17-18. Around age 16 in high school when I came out, he wanted me to say I loved him and his response was he wasn't gay. His words after were "You're the only guy I could ever love and be attracted to, it's strange..." (I know... teens lol) but it wasn't the lifestyle he wanted. You'd hardly think he was gay so it made sense to me. However, we had tons of sweet, innocent, and romantic moments. We'd cuddle and lay on each other out on the lawn till 1am under the stars. Sometimes he would walk to my house at 9pm so we could say we were going to his house to play video games and him living 3 miles away, we'd talk and get to his house around 2am. We'd sneak into each others rooms, play some Runescape and sleep over often. At age 16-17 he went to boot camp so he could graduate faster and when he came back, he came back with a girlfriend who I became great friends with for a long time. (Talk about awkward at first!). Long story short, when he came back he said he still felt feelings of love similar to what he felt for his girlfriend. I grew tired of him going back and forth, I felt it was unfair to her, and I really liked her as a person too. I didn't allow moments like that happen again and I continued to hang out with them (19 at the time) until our third best friend drunkenly mentioned a comment about our past. He had hidden this part of his life from her because it was never more than moments and a few innocent kisses. He really couldn't envision himself having a gay lifestyle which he also told our other friend after him and I had talked about it. *So much for long story short!* Lol. I was in the UK when it happened applying to universities and I wasn't there to explain to her, so he cut me out of his life to save his relationship but I'm glad because fast forward to now and he's now happily married to her and about to have a baby. I too am in a happily committed relationship and we now have two foster to adopt boys. I did see them at the movie theater once with my partner (I was 22 at the time so it had been a while since I last saw them) and she waved hi to the both of us and he just glanced and turned away. lol The end.
